content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. rastus gathers the town for a debriefing meeting.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern glowing with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

On February 3, after the newcomers have had a chance to settle in, everyone's tablets will ping with a message from @rastus!

Omg will everyone head down to Bonfire Square for Rastus' town meeting please? He wants to recap what you've all learned so far!!!

And can someone please teach him that he can record an audio message and then send it to everyone instead of looping the whole dang town in on a group text?? 😂😂😂😂

Assuming you do indeed head down to Bonfire Square after all that, what you'll find is this: a series of benches and tables have been set up surrounding the bonfire, and there's enough seating for all of Beacon's residents. As people take their seats near the fire, the barkeeper forest spirits from the Invincible toddle through the crowd with trays of hot chocolate and warm cider, along with a sampler tray of acorns and pinecones, if that's your thing.

Once everyone's here and settled, sipping on hot drinks and maybe busting a tooth on an acorn, Rastus hobbles forward to address the crowd:

"Crrk. Hello. I am Rastus. I tend to the bonfire. I have tended to the bonfire, mrawk, for years and years. You are doing, rmmm, well. Good."

He nods to emphasize the point. Yes, you are doing good.

"Talk. To each other. Share what you have learned. Yes. Crarrk. It is important."

He nods again, and then... shuffles back over to his post near the bonfire, waiting for anyone who might come by with an interest in torches. Seems it's up to you all to get each other up to speed?

Luckily for all the newcomers who may find themselves confused by their sudden arrival here, their tablets and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! We're thrilled to welcome so many new faces into the community, and you've come at a great time! Alongside this intro log, we have our very first cat herd, which is essentially a recap of the plot thus far, as well as a rundown on a ton of great info to help get you started in the game.

But don't feel like you have to read it all right this second! ICly, Rastus will call everyone together for the town meeting on February 3 to give new characters (and players) a chance to get their bearings before smacking them in the face with all the plot. This log will cover both the ferry arrival and the cat herd meeting, so feel free to bounce around in time in your toplevels.

Remember, too, that all of the plot info available in the cat herd can now be considered common knowledge! Newbies and oldbies alike, feel free to assume that your character learns as much of that plot info as you like at this meeting, regardless of whether or not you thread it out.

And of course, go ahead and introduce yourselves on the OOC intro, as well!

Arrival

[A 9-foot-tall green robot carrying a large, chrome lantern steps out of The Invincible with a heavy step. His feet quickly sink through the delicate layers of snow and he surveys his dark surroundings. This isn't the worst of places to arrive. It's not the darkest, not the coldest, and certainly not the most desolate.

Despite those reassurances, the information he gleaned from the fragile tablet give him little cause for optimism. He can't see any members of the crew - his former crew, he reminds himself. Even worse, he's lost the Magnus Armor in some sort of cruel mockery of his pride. He can't even die with the name with which he accomplished the most.

He steps forth, head high, back rigid, slightly pleased by the music. The music selector has good taste.]

February 3rd

[Thankfully, a meeting has been called to distract Minimus from any emotional breakdowns. It's a familiar routine: once he finds his bearings, he throws himself into the minutiae of their duties and determines proper courses of actions. A supporter, not a leader, which is the only thing he was meant to be.

He stands in a back row due to his height, tapping his tablet with a stylus and giving everyone a dissatisfied look. Don't worry. That's just his usual expression.]

Is this how we normally call meetings? Is there no set date upon which we agree? This sudden calling is difficult around which to plan.

[Someone has to bring up important issues.]

We're new, so they probably thought we didn't have any plans.

[ Honestly, a big talking robot was pretty cool to see. Even Minato had to admit, who was only casually into things like that due to Ken and his enjoyment of Featherman (giant mech vs uh... whatever this one is, but whatever). But it also meant that somehow this robot died.

He reminded him of Aigis in that way, albeit not at all human sized. He held his tablet to his chest as he looked up at the being, one of the earphones unclipped and hanging around his neck. ]

Welcome to Beacon

[ Minato steps off the ferry with his earphones already clipped to his ears. He held his lantern in one arm and the other with the tablet. It was cold, he was only wearing his school uniform. He looked momentarily at the lighthouse in the distance before turning back to this new place.

This wasn't where he was supposed to be, but he supposed that was the case for the others here. He made his way towards the bonfire, it was undoubtedly warm there, and he sat down nearby. With his lantern now in his lap, he unfolds the tablet. He's also from 2010 and tablets aren't quite... that common. Still, he'll be poking around while trying not to look as confused as he felt.

That being said, one can also faintly hear the music he had playing. ]

Green Light - Venti

[ Minato stumbled and fell to the ground, hard. His lantern jangled at his hip, cracked severely and he felt almost ready to throw up. It was also blue the other day, not green. What... ]

What's going on?

[ He looked around, things were not looking straight. The ground wobbled and dipped, vertigo had his shutting his eyes and shaking his head to rid himself of the awful sensation. He even pressed a hand to his mouth as he felt ready to vomit again, but he didn't. It'd been happening for almost an hour and, because he thought he was getting sick, he was trying to head back to his room. Except, he had no idea where to find the Landmark Inn anymore. ]

Hrk...!

[ His hand went to his stomach as he attempted to stand. ]

February 3rd

Ah... that's it?

[ That... was kind of anticlimactic. Not that he expected a show or anything but. This felt very much like an assembly at school only not much info was really given aside from "talk to each other".

He sighed. He had a few days to do that already, but he didn't know more he could ask about that wasn't already on the tablets. Well... actually... ]

Do the lanterns normally change colors and crack... or had I done something wrong?

[ He isn't sure if he's addressing a new person or not, but he had an awful few hours yesterday that he'd like explained, thanks. ]

[Ignis didn't expect much of this meeting, to be honest. Rastus isn't known to talk a lot and mostly tends to the bonfire. Still, he's here to help out the newcomers with any questions they can have.

The guy he met before brings up a good question and one even he doesn't have an answer to.]

No. They didn't change colors until last month. I am not exactly sure what had prompted this, as everyone has been very mindful of their lanterns.

[ For a moment, just the briefest, saddest moment, Theon thinks he’s home. When he feels the sway of the ship and hears the waves lapping against the hull, his heart soars. Asha he thinks. Father surely sent her back for me. But as he moves to grab the lantern on his bedside, he sees that he’s still wearing the dirty, bloodied clothing of a man who has recently been mauled by dogs. Strange, but he tries to excuse it. The ironborn weren’t hospitable on his first trip home, after all. It’s when he makes his way to the deck and sees no sign of Pyke beneath the moon that his heart drops. He doesn’t know this place.

He has questions, but he won’t turn back to ask them. Instead, he moves forward towards the shore, annoyed with the music and with the fact that his once fine clothing is in shreds. ]

February 3rd

[ It’s clear that none of this sits well with Theon. He never really knew what to expect from death, but he always thought of it as an end, a full stop. No more thinking or fearing or worrying, no more guilt crushing down upon his shoulders. If that were what he had ended up, he might have thanked Ramsay Snow. Instead, he sits near the bonfire, skimming through the information app with a look of indignation on his face. He ignores everything that doesn’t interest him: “why we should get along”, “how you can help”, and instead focuses on one detail: “should the flame go out, you’ll die.”

What sense does that make when they’re all already dead? He eyes the lantern at his hip, a brass ship’s lantern that looks older than he is. He opens its door, and gestures to the nearest person holding a cup of cider or hot chocolate. ]

I suppose you've finished that?

[Comes a deceptively breezy reply. It's an odd thing to share with a stranger, and so, surely, there's more to this. He's got an assessing stare to endure, some seconds before she catches the open lantern. The connection is made, but doubted. Surely unrelated. Who would--]

If it's cold that's getting to you, I promise, you can just ask for my coat.

[ A: Hope we can find some ingredients around here! ]

Sora is going at a dead run up the dock, only slowing to move around people unloading and new faces along the way, gliding past clumps of people in his rush. Hey, maybe he spots you, newcomer! After all, he might have a few other things to do, but he'll always pause to check on a newbie. They're in this together, after all, and he knows perfectly well that people aren't going to be in a good way coming off this ferry. Smiling faces are not required here.

Otherwise, he'll make it up to the ship's hold and land in a bit of a pickle. He has several packages waiting for him, and he can carry all of them at the same time, but he doesn't really want to have to balance it all! Especially when he's gotta carry some of them all the way down to the village. Especially when one of his orders ends up being, uh, 12 CPR manuals? Rastus! That's 11 more than what he asked for! Oy.

He'll look up and around, a bit stymied, then gesture toward anyone who looks able-bodied and idle looking. "Hey, do you have some time? I need a hand getting these down to the rec center. I'll owe you one!"


[ B: Aw, calm down, Sora, and drink your tea. ]

He's standing outside the tavern. Well, sometimes. Sometimes he's sitting outside the tavern. Just right there, butt in the snow. Sometimes he's peeking through a window, looking soulfully inside. He is full of remorse, and it is very obvious that whatever he's sorry about? Is inside. And he is very, very stuck outside.

Eventually, if necessary, he'll spot a passerby, brush some snow off the seat of his pants, and walk over. "Okay, three important questions. First: Do you have time to do a favor for me?"


[ C: A chance to make everyone happy! ]

Sora chooses to end his day by going to the path that connects the harbor to the Landmark and picking up rocks. SO many rocks. Rocks of all shapes! Rocks of all sizes! Literally every rock he can find. He'll walk them down the path and deposit them next to one of two tall posts: one near the mouth of the isthmus that leads to Robin's lighthouse and one next to the path in the middle of where it meets the shore. There are no rock exaggerations here. He is carrying many big rocks.

There are many rock related options here. He could be carrying many rocks, only to drop a few. He could be carrying a rock so big that he, uh, either almost bowls a stranger over or straight up crashes into someone else. (... Should he be able to carry a rock that big? He's not an especially small guy, but he's not a bodybuilder either.) He could also just be staring at his work! There are lit torches on each post, after all. It's kinda pretty, all things considered. Or some killjoy could sabotage the rock piles. Or him. Rock sabotage is almost as good as real sabotage, after all.

Come February 3rd, Sora's at the bonfire with everyone else, listening to the discussion with his hands curled around a mug of cider, listening. He tilts his head every so often. He looks extremely thoughtful, scratching his head. He is listening with both his ears. He is listening so hard.

Eventually, he'll just turn to face his nearest neighbor. "I have a question! About whatever they just said." And then he'll look a bit worried. "I was paying attention! I'm just kinda confused."


[ E: To wish deep in your heart to make someone happy. ]

Sora is going to bust in a little more quietly into the little wooden cabin Hana's been living in for the past month. Whatever life used to be here is a little less... here. It's a little weird to think that there used to be so many people making sure that she was okay. Now it seems like all the lights have gone out.

Still, Hana's here. He's been doing his best to be a good friend! He didn't exactly expect to be out as long as he was this time, but he's been determined to visit her since the lanterns finally started going back to normal. He wanted to be sure that he would be himself during his visits, after all. He wants to make sure every visit he has with her is a good one.

Tap tap tap. "Hey, Hana? Are you awake?" He hopes she's been moving around more. It's almost time for that, right?


[ F: Choose your own adventure! ]

Sora currently lives at the Landmark, so if your character is slated to get there but you don't know how to get them moving, he'll be happy to walk with them! All they have to do is look a little lost. Actually, he'll talk to anyone, lost or not. He's just like that.

Alternatively, if your character is already at the Landmark, he has a sign on his door that says to knock if you need anything! It also has a rough schedule of his week so people know when he's in. He is here to help!

Alisaie is headed for the tavern anyway, drawn by the promise of warmth and the sound of people. She pauses as the boy approaches, though, and his greeting spurs a brief, wry smile. People, it seems, are people everywhere, even when every last one of them is supposedly dead.

"That depends on the favour," she says, giving him a long, considering look. "I know little and less of this place, and I'd prefer not to land in the middle of a feud because someone wants the wrong fence post moved five paces to the left."

Not that she's likely to turn him down, whatever it is he asks - anything would be better than being alone with her thoughts at the moment - but she'd rather know what she's agreeing to before she agrees to it.

[ Sam scrubs his face. He's still feeling a little groggy, very nearly nauseous, actually, on account of the mild seasickness and confusion of what had happened to him before waking up in a small bed in a small room on a ship.

He remembers flashes of blood and pain and somewhere in there, Lucifer's smug smile above him; he remembers choking on his own blood and the sharp scratch of fingernails digging themselves into his arms, his chest, his neck, everywhere — vampires fighting other vampires to satiate their unending hunger.

He remembers thinking, This is it? This is how I go?

He remembers Dean. Mom. Cas. Jack.

And then that's it.

When he follows the rest of the passengers, he's got his backpack slung over one shoulder. He stuffs the tablet into the front pocket without another thought and hangs onto the lantern. In his other hand is a knife, half-hidden under the cuff of his sleeve - just in case. He'd decided to go with the demon blade for all-around use but he hopes to god he doesn't have to use it. Thing is, when you wake up in a strange land with no cues and no context, you're gonna be a little on edge. You're gonna want what little protection you can provide yourself in case something that goes bump-in-the-night decides it wants to kill you. It's the Winchester Way.

Except ... he's already supposed to be dead. Isn't he?

There's a haunting kind of song that comes over the speakers, slow and sad, and nothing like one of Dean's classic rock anthems. It hits him like a punch in the gut; wherever he is, he needs to find his way back to his brother.

To the nearest person — you — passing by him as he steps onto solid ground (the smallest of blessings in this bizarre nightmare), he clears his throat, raises his voice to say: ]

Hey — hey, you got any idea where we've docked?

[ Time to get to work and get out of here. ]

[ It is with some hesitation that Sam eventually decides to heed the tablet's advice and head to Bonfire Square, to the congregation of townsfolk around the fire.

He doesn't take a seat, choosing instead to hang back behind the rows of benches and tables. He's still dressed in the same clothes he'd had on when he arrived — namely flannel and denim — and keeps his arms crossed over his chest as he listens to the creature introduce himself, advising them to ... talk to each other. There are still patches of dried blood soaked into the partially torn fabric of his shirt, and his wounds, while mostly healed, look a little bit raw. But otherwise he's got a serious expression on his face — thoughtful, even.

See, he still can't quite help feeling like he should be interrogating this creature for information instead; hunting it, even.

He also still isn't sure this whole thing isn't some elaborate mindfuck on his way from the land of the living to ... well, wherever the hell he's supposed to go when he'd died in an alternate world, far from his own world's versions of Heaven or Hell.

You might notice him hanging back when he could be taking a seat. You might also notice that he'd deliberately refused any of the food and drink here until he has a better idea of what's going on. ]

[After what happened last month, Rosinante has a lot of apologies he wants to say to people. A lot of regret in general for things he had no control over. Thankfully, the lanterns make a good scapegoat, and he'll even be able to claim he didn't understand where it all came from; all that hatred, all that vile cruelty, was some twisted thing he has no familiarity with, and that he barely remembers it anyway.

He remembers it all. But it's easier to lie, just like he always has. It's for his own survival.

Lost in thought, he's autopiloting toward the ferry to help unload as he does every month when he nearly passes by someone on the pier who has called out to him. He shouldn't be so oblivious. This place has gotten to him, hasn't it? He pauses, and looks over his shoulder and downward toward the new fellow.]

This is Beacon. Welcome to your new home, I suppose.

( said big language is currently coming from someone small by compression. eddie kaspbrak has fallen into the waters near the boat in his attempt to run off and (rudely, mind you) running into someone in the process. it doesn't help the kid is a mess. he's covered in dark muck, bloody, one arm in a cast and now freezing wet! and it is one hundred percent his fault.

he just doesn't like any of that one bit as, in his fit, he kicks at the dark water he is currently standing ankle deep in. big mood, right? )

( all things considered, eddie hasn't been very far from richie's side since he found the other loser. it was as true in life as it has been in death... or whatever weird afterlife that they've found themselves in. and that's been true for most of his outings in and around town especially bonfire square. even now, he doesn't linger far from the door of the invincible, cradling his broken arm (ignoring the lantern at his feet) and giving a wary look over the gathering of people.

honestly, all this shit is going over his head but eddie imagines part of that reason is because he just can't focus when he's still so worried about everything from home. still so worried about the other losers that weren't here. were they lost somewhere out there in this constant darkness or worse... were they back home and now playthings for that sick clown? whatever the case, none of it was good.

and yeah, sorry, he's going to pass on any food or drink too. sorry, cute forest spirits but magical creatures really aren't in the category of 'trustworthy' for this teen. )

[well, he wasn't consulted about this town meeting but he sure isn't going to complain about a town meeting, given that it's kind of his schtick. In fact, he's probably going to be one of the people doing the most speaking and sharing, even if most of it is going to be a repeat from his last network message for everyone except newcomers.

Hey, newcomers. Hi. Resident Chinese emperor who thinks he's in charge if only because no one else seems to be. He has a lot of information to share. He's also very composed and carries himself with authority, giving off an air of being someone who can answer questions while not being...entirely amiable. Approachable, for sure, but something about his icy eyes implies he might be secretly judging you the whole time.

Consider this open season on Cao Pi, style name Zihuan. Ask him questions, he'll tell you very few lies. By the way, he did just mention that yeah, he's met Dr. Solis. About that...]

[That moment when your string-pulling is mutually beneficial. Rosinante could have gone to speak with Dr. Solis himself and in fact had been sorely tempted to. But it's convenient for him to have someone apparently in charge of things - a figurehead, but a capable, intelligent one. Making sure Cao Pi was highly recommended to Daylight, who places a lot of weight on his opinions, was a way of cementing Cao Pi's role while keeping a hand in the conversation and questions themselves.

While the meeting proceeds, Rosinante sits toward the back, absorbing it all while taking down notes as quickly as he can. But after a while, there's a break - people need to stretch their legs, think about what they're going to ask each other and what next topic to focus on, and Rosinante stuffs his tablet into a pocket and heads over to Cao Pi with a mildly-amused smile on his lips.]

You're welcome, by the way. What's she like in person?

[ Arrival ]

Fjord... really doesn't know what he was expecting. The last thing he remembers is his ribs and spine cracking underneath ten tons of ancient temple... and now he's sitting in a cabin on a boat again. One that is in no way comparable to the Balleater.

He wants to explore the ship, see if he can't find the rest of the Mighty Nein here to explain what the fuck happened to him, but he recognises the motions of a ship docking, so he just grabs the lantern and... some weird, metal plate thing? ...that he tucks behind his back, into the belt of his leather armour - since clearly they've been left out for him specifically, what with the otherwise empty room - and heads for where he can only assume the exit is.

And he... doesn't recognise any of these people. He sure as shit doesn't recognise this tiny dock, more like that of a small-town lake than a seaside town, and he stands to one side on the dock, looking openly, horribly confused.


[ February 3rd ]

He's done a bit of wandering in the last few days, trying to get his bearings. It's slow going, with how utterly bizarre and confusing using the tablet is, but he's getting the hang of it. And this place. And his new... existence, apparently. Slowly.

He doesn't like this at all.

It takes him a while to get to the message on his tablet - he keeps hitting the wrong buttons, but he's getting better at it - and shows up to the meeting a little bit late; but at least he's here. And holy shit these guys have been busy. He should get himself involved in something quickly, it feels like.

He doesn't come across as over-eager when he comes up to people, but anyone with a keen eye might notice he's doing it a lot. "So with all this going on, is there anything else we should be exploring that hasn't been covered yet?"

And when he's not doing anything else, on any given day Fjord can be found in the Invincible. Because it's the only place even remotely similar to being home.

Over-eager is better than under-eager, as Rosinante figures it. He sees the newcomer - green, he notices; a fishman? something else? - making his way through the crowds, meeting people and asking questions, before the man makes his way over directly. Rosinante looks downward with hands in his pockets and a cigarette in his mouth, though he withdraws it with a hand to answer.

"Glad you're jumping right in. We still have a lot to do. What are your skills?"

He's come to the right person, for Rosinante does a lot of exploring himself, and when he can, he tries to bring new people out with him, or recommend them to others. They all have to work together to get this problem solved, and getting everyone invested in their group survival through rediscovering parts of the old town is something he finds to be particularly helpful.

The Invincible | Feb 2
Jason was pleased to see that Rastus had come through and gotten Jason his requested items. He decided it would be best to start at the Invincible, since that would likely be the starting place for a lot of the new arrivals.

Jason didn't pay much attention to the two or three spirits trailing behind him at first, they'd taken an interest in his presence since day one. Instead, he propped one of the bulletin boards against the bar and the other near the door. He'd be taking one to the Landmark, but for the time being he figured he should get one of them mounted now.

He sat his supplies for mounting the board on the floor and one of the spirits plopped down beside them. Jason figured it didn't mean him any harm and took the time to signal to him that he could help by giving Jason nails (he knows the word for "help"). The spirit hooted happily and immediately started sorting nails. Picking one up, holding it out to Jason, and then putting it back when he didn't take it quickly enough.

The other two, he would realize later, he really should have given a job because instead they assigned themselves a task...that of taking out all of his push pins and sticking them into the spare bulletin board one at a time. One spirit would hand the other a push pin and that spirit would smack it into the board in a way similar to how Jason was hammering.

Jason didn’t notice this until he was ready to put the board up and saw what they had done. He sighed, "Come on guys. I need some of those for THIS board. They can't ALL be in the one going to the Landmark."

The spirits looked at each other and then back at Jason. One of the spirits squawked loudly and smacked the back of the bulletin board, dislodging many of the pins. The other spirit squawked back and lifted one end of the bulletin board. The third spirit, having finished hanging the first bulletin board with Jason, trotted over and helped him lift the other end. Before Jason could protest they took off out the door with his spare bulletin board.

Oh no.

"HEY! GET BACK HERE WITH THAT!" Jason started to run after them, hammer still in his hand and leaving several nails and tacks behind. He stopped and glanced back, thinking of the mess. He whistled to get the attention of the spirit he’d been about to leave. "Please get these out of the way. I’ll be right back!"

And now he was chasing two spirits, carrying a large bulletin board, down the path.

The Landmark | Feb 2
Anyone hanging out at the Landmark will find the lobby’s quiet peace immediately disturbed by two spirits bursting through the doors with a bulletin board half covered in push pins. The spirits are bouncing and spinning the board around as if looking for a place to put it.

The Concierge looks up from the front desk and starts to protest to the spirits for their antics. Surely this is not how to behave when they finally started getting guests checked in again?

A few minutes later Jason comes through the door, his breathing a little hard like he’d just been running a long time. For little things they sure were fast. He takes a big gulp of air, about to scold them himself, but then realizes where they are.

Wait a minute.

His expression softens, “Did you guys bring this all the way here to help?”

The two spirits stop spinning around and look up at Jason for a moment. They both hoot loudly and throw the board down at his feet. Push pins scatter everywhere and Jason sighs.

Another mess to clean up, but at least he had his board back.

Closed to Daylight
It was the dead of winter but apparently that wasn’t preventing the Vendor from operating his ice cream stand. Jason was relieved and at least with it being cold he didn’t have to worry about his apology gift melting before he found him.

Which did beg the question of where he could find Daylight. Jason thought about taking to the sky, but after their last encounter that might not be such a great idea. He was already nervous about this, worried that Daylight might not want to see him at all (though of course he remembers Daylight saying stuff quite to the contrary).

He notices some spirits in the woods near the cabins and decides that’s a place to start. He’s still pretty elementary with his ocarina but he manages to hoot and mime looking for someone and tries to communicate that it’s Daylight by holding his hand high in the air. The spirits seem to get it and one of them tugs at Jason’s shirt, pointing in a different direction than where he’d been going.

“Thanks,” Jason says and takes off to find the robot.

The Landmark

Ignis has been hanging around the hotel and the restaurant ever since the little trip which led him to it, perhaps a week or so ago. The kitchen interested him and he's still mildly disturbed by the sheer amount of salt that was strewn around in what little time he was there. But, he hopes he could learn some things about how spirits operate around here. Do they really cook?

He jumps in surprise when sudden noise comes through the front door and Ignis looks up from his tablet just in time to dodge the barrelling spirits.

"My word, what is going on here?"

His eyes spot Jason come in and hopes for an explanation from him because, while spirits are hooting and waving around, he's not very adept at translating the meaning. Yet.

Tadashi Hamada | Big Hero 6

ARRIVAL
A - [Back home, Tadashi's outfit was perfectly fine for California weather. A jacket, a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers; good for cool weather and okay for warmer weather without the jacket. Here, not so much. He'd stepped off the dock straight into several inches of snow and nearly dropped his lantern from the shock of the cold.]

Ah snow...I didn't miss you.

[And now the decision: To stay put or to walk through the snow and definitely end up with frozen feet?]

B - [In the interest of not freezing to double-death. If that's possible, he doesn't really want to find out, so he's found the clothing section of the general store and is going through it for winter wear. Someone's been through the shoes lately, apparently very haphazardly, because he's located a single boot that fits but he can't find the mate. Care to help? Or maybe inquire whether he plans to wear what appears to be two full (very mismatched) outfits piled up nearby all at once.]


FEBRUARY 3RD MEETING

[So far, Tadashi has read everything the tablet has to offer. Several times. Even some of the bulletins. He has yet to do too much with anything the library or the town hall has to offer so far, but they're on his list.

He's a little uneasy about meeting near the bonfire. Fire was one of the last things he saw in life, and there's a small, irrational fear that something might happen if he gets too close, even if everyone else seems to be okay with it and in some cases sitting right next to it. So he's standing a safe(ish) distance away with a cup of cider and a pinecone that he took just to be polite.]

Wait, this fire's been going for years?

[Guess who was looking for that very boot, mostly because seeing it without its mate was somewhere between irritating in a "mismatched and incomplete" kind of way, and unhelpful for new people. Also it was in the completely wrong part of the storage depot for footwear, being mixed in with the grain staples. Soldat has it in hand, coming back around the corner from one of the other shelves, and pauses at Tadashi's presence. Holding the other boot.

Well, that was easy.

They hold their half of the pair out wordlessly, for the kid to take. It happens to be in the metal hand, though the rest of the metal arm is hidden under a couple layers of jackets and shirts.]

Alisaie Leveilleur | Final Fantasy XIV

Arrival I
Alisaie remembers numb lips and her vision darkening to pinpoints like tunnels collapsing in on themselves and her brother's voice calling her name. For just a moment, she thinks that's what must have woken her, until the mournful cry of the foghorn pushes past the cobwebs of where she had been, displacing crystal halls with red-lit darkess. She bolts upright, searching the cabin for any hint of the familiar. Nothing, and, more importantly, no one. Not even a note. And yet a lantern has been left for her, and what appears to be some strange variety of tomestone. She slips the latter into her satchel and clips the former to her belt, leaving her hands free for sword and spell should whoever crews the ship - and it's clear enough that this is a ship, she recognizes the sway of the floor beneath her and the distant sounds of the ship docking - is unfriendly.

She finds the door unlocked when she tries it. Not a prisoner, then, or at least not a prisoner of anyone halfway competent. Fine. Good. She takes one last look behind her for anything she might have missed, then makes her way out into the corridor in search of a way above deck, hand on the hilt of her rapier. Anyone who approaches openly, she's liable to greet with, "Do you know where we've made port?" Tense, certainly, but not hostile.

Anyone sneaking up on her, on the other hand, whether deliberate or inadvertent, is likely to have to contend with a bolt of some kind of sullen red energy streaking past their head as she wheels like a stepped-on cat, aim only diverted at the last moment so that her spell strikes the wall instead of some fellow traveler.

She may be a mite jumpy.

Arrival II
She winds up in the taproom of the Invincible almost by default, swept up by the momentum of other lost souls and the indisputable draw of a common gathering place. She spends some time - minutes, perhaps an hour or more, she's not entirely certain - brooding over a cup of truly mediocre mulled wine, and while she certainly responds if approached, she'll eventually shake herself out of her (rightly deserved, it's not like she dies every day) melancholy and approach one of the other patrons to ask, "Where is it we're all meant to stay?" And while she's aiming for someone who doesn't look like they've just been gutshot and thus is more likely to have been here a while, it's entirely possible she's missed her mark and approached another newcomer to puzzle over what sort of lodgings might be found in death.

February 3
Alisaie arrives not long after the translation of Rastus's message. Three days is more than enough time for her to have begun feeling restless, and while permanent darkness is relatively novel, it's also oppressive and leaves far too much room for her mind to chase its own tail, going 'round and 'round about her (apparent) death and what it might mean for those she holds most dear. It's a relief to have something to do, even if 'something' in this case is nothing more than a very large meeting.

She accepts a mug of cider from one of the circulating spirits, though she declines the offered acorns, and while she initially chooses a seat further from the fire, she doesn't stay there long. Why stay put when she can circle around the bonfire, approaching people to ask one of two questions: "What do we have by way of defenses?" or "Has anyone made a record of how the World Eaters attack?"

Arrival II

Unfortunately, Fjord is someone who is very good at keeping up appearances about not looking like he isn't pondering his own death; he's got his arms casually folded, his somewhat ominous lantern sitting on the table next to him as he nurses an ale, watching the other people stuck here with his free elbow on the table.

When Alisaie approaches him, he doesn't look terribly phased by her appearance at all (aside from the fact she seems quite short for an elf - maybe she's a half-elf), and instead gives her a faint, wry smile.

"Well, seems like there's still a few rooms spare right here, if you move quickly. It's an inn as much as anything else." And he's already scored a room, partially thanks to Molly. "Just duck upstairs and knock, I guess, see if anyone yells at you for it."

Bucky/Soldat | OTA

I. Ferry Unloading

Because it's practically tradition at this point, and because it's something useful that they're good at doing, Soldat is waiting for the ferry to help unload supplies. They can be seen shuttling boxes from the docks to the Invincible, the general store, and later on the Landmark hotel: one on the metal shoulder, one under the flesh arm, and half the time a bad dangling from one hand as well. It's quite a load, but they seem to do all right with it, particularly on the snow-cleared paths between the main buildings.

They aren't particularly sociable, but when asked directions, they divert to show newcomers things-- "Inn's this way," and "Store is here-- you need warmer clothes," and even "Hotel is that way, it's a ways, but I can show you,"-- and old friends are welcome to join them in their carrying, or just walk alongside and chat in their direction.


II. Cat-herd Meeting

Soldat absolutely does not want to be here. There's too many people, too much talking, too many voices to try and sort out inside and outside. But it's important, and they know lots of information about spirits, and also a lot about Beacon's defense and patrol routes. Plus they have good memories of the various risks around here.

So here they are, lingering at the edge of the main group, never sitting down, both hands stuck in their pockets and hair loose around their face and lantern open (warm gold light, with one single remaining crack half-hidden behind a metal shutter) and slung over their shoulder. Trying and failing to get up the nerve to actually speak up without being prompted. When asked questions, at least, they can answer, and will answer readily.

At least it's outside. If it were inside, they'd never have made it this far.

III. VALENTINE'S DAY COMIN' CHUCKLEFUCKLES [airhorns]

Sora went back and checked out the book on chocolate-tempering from the Librarian again with a promise to bring a proper valentine's care package and at least half the failures to them! Sora has a soft spot for that spirit. What a charmer. He can AND will die for that willowy, billowy, fist-bumpy being.

Anyway! It's propped up with some spare pots and utensils in the kitchen of Miner's Castle #3 since no one in the place besides Aziraphale has enough cultural context to understand how these gifts work and Sora wants it to be a surprise for everyone he knows (and maybe a few he doesn't know yet? He's still trying to get the nerve up for some of his potential recipients.) He's got a bag of chips and some potential fillings out - nothing fancy, today's meant to be kind of a low stress test run just to see if he can do it. In a couple of days, he'll be churning them out for real.

Pot. Water. Metal bowl. And... chocolate. "Okay," Sora says to himself, then distractedly puts a couple of chips in his mouth. Hey, he has a lot! Enough. Okay, maybe he'd better head himself off right now before he vacuums up everything he's trying to experiment with.

I. Welcome Beacon Bits, February 1

One of the people waiting on the docks for newcomers is a very tall, very bony-looking old man, skin and hair completely colorless and almost translucent in the pale blue light of his glass flower-like lantern, but with an amiable expression. He's not here to help with unloading; he's an old man, and there are plenty of stronger backs to handle that, even if he hates admitting it. He's here to say hello to the latest batch.

"Come on, off you get," he says warmly enough to whomever he's got now. "I know it's weird and kind of shitty, but it's not a bad place, mostly. When nothing's malfunctioning or attacking. Town's this way."

Perhaps he is slightly less reassuring than he means to be.


II. Around Town, February 2

The new folks get treated to their first dragon sighting, if they're out and about at the right time. Stone wanders out of the Invincible, stretching and yawning, at some point that might be mid-afternoon if there were an actual sun, then disappears in a cloud of dark mist, which expands and reforms into an equally colorless... well, dragon. Four limbs plus wings, generally bipedal-looking but capable of moving on all fours, scaled all over with translucent scales that show the flesh underneath wherever they aren't gnarled in scars, a long spaded tail that hooks his lantern neatly.

If not interrupted, he'll shake out his wings and leap into the air, for a few low-flying laps around Beacon proper, and then a quick prod at the ice on the lake, making annoyed rumbling sounds if he can't crack it enough to get through for a quick, bracing dip in the water.

Then he'll find himself the gym or rec center or something to curl up in winged form and nap for a while.


III. A not-town-hall Town Hall, February 3

Stone comes to the meeting thing and has himself a big mug of hot cocoa because yum, then rolls his eyes at Rastus when the purpose is explained, one eye bright blue and one clouded over. "Because we haven't all been sharing all this time, already. All right, well. Who wants to know about the building under the lake? And the invisible spirit or magic that swatted me out of the sky when I tried to find it?"

Because he supposes that's the most interesting thing he, personally, has experienced. "Or the lantern breaking things, I experienced those too," he adds. "But so did most of us."

III

"There's a building under the lake?" Naminé hadn't intended to be part of the conversation but she hadn't realized that there was so much hiding in this world. Would she be able to reach it herself or was it dangerous here? The darkness of this world worried her and she wasn't sure how to face it.

"I just arrived. I don't know about any of these things."

At least, not yet.

Eliot Waugh // The Magicians

[i. ARRIVAL]

[ The rocking is nice. It's soothing and relaxing, and Eliot feels like he hasn't slept this good in maybe his whole life. So, honestly, it's a real shame when the foghorn jolts him out of it.

At first, he can't quite shake that sleepy grogginess. Then things slip into place, memories and the facts of his present situation. He's on a boat. That much is obvious. Not one of Fillory's fine boats, though, and certainly not the Muntjac. It's also dark, and he's more than a little weirded out by that singular red light.

Then, he sees the tablet and the lantern. It's more fragile than it looks (Eliot hopes), and he grabs it before making his way cautiously to the deck. If he sees others standing around, he'll try to talk to them. Maybe someone around here knows what the hell is happening, after all.

From there, it's off the boat and on to land and while land should give Eliot a sense of security, it doesn't. He just feels a vaguely ominous pull at the back of his mind.

And, God, he needs a drink. ]


[ii. FEBRUARY 3rd]

[ Of course he goes to Bonfire Square. What else, really, is he going to do other than sit at home and drink? Besides, he's never the sort to pass up a gathering, and he figures it's as good a place as any to meet people.

Also, being admittedly a little slower on the uptake sometimes, Eliot can appreciate the sort of meeting that's going to essentially fill him on the happenings in Beacon.

Cup of cider in hand, Eliot looks around at the gathered crowd, then turns to someone sitting near him. ]

Hello. The only thing I've learned since being here is that people were not joking about vitamin D, because I used to think I was stressed when I had sunlight, but these last few days have been a real fucking trip.

Pick your poison. Eliot's probably spent some time wandering around to get a feel of the place, or hanging around Quentin Coldwater. He's also roommates with Midge Maisel so if you're around either her or Quentin, then you'll be around Eliot. Arrival

[ Aziraphale is busy helping to unload the supplies from the boat, and currently is trying to walk off with a large crate in his arms. As it's larger than he is by a longshot, it gives off a rather comical appearance, being seemingly more unwieldy to him than anything else.

But as he rounds the corner, he nearly drops the crate in shock, and settles for putting it down lightly instead. ]

Eliot!

There you are, my goodness, when did you get back into town? No matter, not important, have you spoken to Quentin? Is he here? Is he all right?

[ He looks around frantically for the other magician, as he'd recently received a very worrisome letter from Q in that very worrisome Q manner. ]

Can't imagine he'd let you out of his sight for the next month!

Catra | She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Arrival

[ Catra marches off the ferry first thing, obviously very glad to be on land again, and takes a moment to stabilize herself against the nearest tree. ]

Ugh, I hate boats.

[ Then it hits her. The fact that she's dead, and everything that came before it. How she lost again, how she didn't even manage to take Adora with her. And now she's here, alone, in the... afterlife? Well, not alone, but with a bunch of strangers who are also dead. She did try to read the info, but the swaying of the boat made it hard.

And then, somehow, music starts to play. Her ears twitch, telling her the sound is coming from the ferry.

It's all too weird. It must be a trick or something. She'll have to investigate. ]

Bonfire

[ Though she is hardly a people person, Catra needs information, so she goes to the bonefire meeting as soon as she receives the message. She stayed up all night reading all the info she could get her hands onto, so she knows about the bonfire. As soon as Rastus is done talking, she marches over there and picks up a torch. ]

I'm taking one of these.

[ Once that is done, she scopes out a seat that gives her as much of a vantage point as she can get.

When she is offered a drink by a forest spirit, she picks up a cup of hot chocolate and takes a whiff of it. ]

What's this? Poison?

[The look of sheer offense on her face at the cup in her hands makes a slight smile appear on Fjord's, as he pauses beside her to lean over and look for himself.]

( By the time Robin notices the music playing in the background she's managed to put a good amount of distance between herself and the ship. She's vaguely concerned that she might hurl still, but whether that's due to motion sickness or the situation is anyone's guess... except she's already convinced herself that she gets seasick, so that's that. No need to worry about the boat any longer, or the weird lantern she's clutching with a white knuckled grip, or the creepy rock music humming away in the background, or the fact that--

Nope. Not doing that. It's fine.

Robin sucks in a deep breath, surprisingly steady, and then powers on to get as far away from that ship, as quickly as possible. Frankly it's the only thing she'll allow herself to think about right now; a singular goal in mind, she doesn't possibly have the time to contemplate the situation when she's so focused on half-striding, half-jogging down the pier. She's in such a rush that it won't take long before she accidentally clips someone with her shoulder, stumbling and only keeping her lantern in her grip by virtue of that vice-like lock her hands have clenched into. )

Sorry, sorry, I- sorry ( She's surprisngly out of breath for someone who really wasn't rushing, who's quite athletic, for someone who is convinced that she"s 'fine' ) I wasn't looking, I'm an idiot. Are you okay?

town meeting.

( Of course Robin goes to the meeting. Passing up an opportunity to learn more about this seems ridiculous, she has to learn more about the town...except in practice it's incredibly hard. She's trying to keep herself occupied with the mug steaming away in her hand, but she's scrolling through the tablet is making her feel nauseous again and it's a little hard to blame it on seasickness when she's sitting still.

She's going a little grey in the face by the time she sets it down flat on her lap again.

And then turns it upside down for good measure.

Whatever is currently being discussed has tuned into background noise by this point, and Robin starts looking around to find something to distract herself. Anything she can engage in will do, really, and she looks just a tiny bit desperate as she rounds on someone sitting near by. )

Wow, this is...organised. ( She says finally, aiming for sarcastic and funny and ending up a little too tense to nail it. It's not a great start to a conversation, but lord knows Robin has never let a little awkwardness stop her from rambling incessantly.

So that's...exactly what she starts to do. ) I mean, is it always like this? Is no one running these things? One time I had a science teacher try this, doing this whole student led class thing and it was a mess. No one took it serious, you know? It was really annoying actually--

( Seriously. Cut her off, or she might never stop. )

[If Maes didn't already know most of this on some level, he probably would have been more engrossed into what was being said. Instead, he finds himself scanning the crowd for a few reasons: looking for familiar faces among the new arrivals and gauging reactions from everyone. It's a good idea to figure out who to talk to next, because there are still so many things to dig into and he feels like now is the time to get an idea fo who to ask next.

Instead, he can't help but notice the young woman looking like she's on the verge of a panic attack as she scrolls relentlessly through the tablet, looks around, and then back at it. Maes works his way over to her. He knows that look. Saw it plenty of times on the faces of soldiers when they first got to the front lines and realized that Hell was real and it was on Earth and they had actually signed up for this.

He reaches her and a few minutes later she seems to notice him as well because she starts rambling at him. He takes a seat, figuring it will be more reassuring than looming over her.

And science teacher...yeah that tracks. She looks like she's around Winry or Edward's age, which could explain a lot. Granted, Maes is probably just jaded to these things because he was dead for a year before ever setting foot in Beacon and during that year he got to see all kinds of crazy things. This? This was nothing all that shocking any more.]

No, it's not always like this. [Which isn't reassuring because if he was honest it would be more like this is the MOST organized they've been in awhile and most days it's everyone doing their own thing.] We've had gatherings like this before, but usually not called on by Rastus there. And if you're asking if anyone is in charge...I can't say for sure if anyone has taken on that capacity. We have a few people who take the lead in terms of bringing us together like this or heading exploration into the less known parts of Beacon...but there's not like a big boss to report to or anything.

[There's a beat and then he adds.] We're figuring this all out on our own. If we're going to make continue on here, we have to work together and support each other. That's probably not something that was really required in that science class of yours. It'll work out a little bit different here.

[ Having just arrived, Clark looks around with scared eyes and his lower lip trembling. He pushes his glasses up on his nose, but the rocking of the boat keeps making them slip again; he thinks he's going to be sick, but he's never been good with boats to begin with.

It's a scary thing, this. Both his tablet and his lantern are held close to him, but only because they seem important, and his knees are wobbling when he gets off the boat and steps on the deck.

Never one who was good at crowds, the people that flood around him overwhelm him. There's a whole litany of 'ope's and 'sorry's and 'pardon me's, and given the fact Clark wasn't all that steady to begin with, he finds himself close to one of the edges of the deck like nothing. And knowing Clark Kent's horrid luck... ]

Oh, oh no--! [ By some miracle, when he slips off the deck, his tablet flies out of his hand and lands on the edge. The rest of him, though, isn't quite so lucky, and Clark lands with a splash in the water, the waves glowing with the light from his lantern. It's freezing, and Clark panics, and while the splashing of the waves might not be very loud, perhaps his squeaked attempts at shouting would be. ]

Help! [ Is the water deep, or is the panic making it seem deep? Oh, goodness. ] S-Someone help me!

[ In all honesty, the fact nobody notices him is par for the course.

The bonfire burns and Clark has been approaching people left and right, only for a) their attentions to divert elsewhere; b) his voice being too soft for them to pick up and Clark assuming he was being ignored; or c) they heard him, certainly, only for his words to make them decide the conversation isn't worth their time.

For all this rejection, however, it seems he has yet to lose hope. The look on his face is determined, his tongue peeking out from the corner of his mouth as he glances about. The first person he sees unoccupied is the one that he decides to amble towards, hunched over and shuffling and his glasses slipping a little down his nose as he goes. Fortunately, he pushes them up before they fall off entirely. ]

[ There is something about the bonfire that Kal finds fascinating. He hasn't had the time to consider it before, not when his arrival had been heralded by a blizzard, but now that he has the time to look at it, it reminds him a little bit of a friend he's left behind.

You know, if you think of the sun as a friend.

He stands in front of it and it feels like he's being charged-- like warmth and energy are crackling along his skin, all the way in his veins and arteries and pumped along with the beat of his heart. Kal, while no-one is looking, reaches his hand out and brushes the flame, which tickles his fingers but doesn't hurt even a little. The corners of his mouth pull into a smile.

Inadvertently, Kal's feet have started hovering over the ground. He doesn't seem to notice it, but given he's got his hand in the fire while dressed in bright blue and red tights (cape included), he's probably quite the sight. ]

[For the most part, the information conveyed at the meeting was all stuff Maes was already aware of. There were a few threads of course that he'd failed to pick up on along the way, but honestly he was just pleased he'd kept tabs on most of the bigger things going on. It helped that he red up on the log book on a daily basis and kept his own notes at his cabin. He compared and wrote down EVERYTHING.

It didn't mean he had connected all the dots and the nice thing about this meeting was he was getting a clearer picture of which threads to pull at next. He forgot how much he enjoyed a good puzzle to solve, even if the last big puzzle had resulted in his death.

He doesn't hear Clark until the second hello and then he turns and looks over. He listens to Clark make his request, glances back at the proceedings and then returns his gaze to Clark.]

[ Vanitas still can't go down to the water. The seizing sensation still crawls through him, even when he crests the hill to look down on the gleaming red of the Lighthouse, passing over the ferry's approach. He folds his arms as he watches it's progress, the tentative way everyone comes off the boat.

He won't go close to the water, but his Unversed do. Like clockwork, they make their way down to the beach, ducking through the legs of citizens and slipping onto the ship. Their goal is to get to the supplies coming in before they're sent up to the General Store, but the Unversed aren't picky about what they take.

Anything left unattended is fair game. They might even have a go at some of those special order items. ]

feb 3 - settling in

[ Every time everyone gathers in one place, something insane seems to happen; and even if Vanitas wasn't drawn by the prospect of information, he'd be drawn by that alone. Uncertainty is as much a part of Darkness as anything else, and Vanitas knows better than most how easily it can be preyed upon in the right situation.

But, he isn't here to instigate. Not yet anyway. He is here to get a good spot where he can eavesdrop, though, and he's not above physically shouldering passed people that are in his way, accompanied with a haughty: ]

feb 3 - bonfire

[ Once things have calmed, Vanitas is actually remarkably quiet. He's near enough the bonfire that the light reflects out of his yellow eyes, making it the brightest part of him as his gaze jumps from person to person as they talk. Despite that, he still seems to stick to the shadows at the edge of it; or maybe it's the shadows that stick to him. Either way there's something almost calculating in his attention, something that's older than his young appearance.

Anytime talking of Dr Solis comes up, his head turns sharply toward the people on the topic; he doesn't even try to hide his interest.

He doesn't volunteer any information unprompted, but he does reach out for a second hot chocolate when the spirits pass by again, despite the fact he's already holding one. ]

[ sitting still with idle hands is not something peter is very good at maintaining, and while he is paying attention to the meeting, the conversation moves too slow for his liking. it isn't very organized for one thing — this isn't like the mission debriefings raven gives right before they pile themselves into the jet. he finds himself missing them now, missing her and the rest of the team, wondering if they all made it out okay. if they were able to bring jean back home.

the longer he sits the more he knows he'll think about it and stew in it. the feeling of failure is something that settles uncomfortably over his shoulders, but like many things, peter shoves it down and finds something else to distract himself with.

a small breeze rushes across vanitas' fingertips when he tries to reach for the hot chocolate just out of his grasp. but when he looks down at his table, he'll find two mugs instead of one. peter is still in his seat behind him if he decides to look back, hands settled behind his head as he tunes back into the conversation. ]

[ he doesn't remember the last time he was on a ship, which he only realizes when he hears the loud foghorn that jerks him awake. it takes him a second to register the sway of the ship, slow and gentle enough that he doesn't even really feel it at first as he tries to take in his surroundings. there's no mistake that he died — he has the blood on his uniform to show for it: dried and caked in patches along his side and his back. it's beyond salvaging at this point, but hey, at least he still has his AF1s. small victories.

the hallway outside his room is empty and then it's not, peter suddenly materializing seemingly out of thin air before he disappears again, only to reappear on the deck a second later. maybe you were contemplating your own status of being alive again when this guy shows up, his lantern hooked to his belt next to his walkman. he's gone before you can say something though, already on the ground the second the ship docks, head tilted to listen to the song playing over the speakers. ]

Cool song choice. [ not something he's really heard of, he's still stuck in the 90s, but you know. ] Beats a welcome party, I guess.

[ afterwards, peter will be doing one of two things: a) he'll be helping unload supplies from the ferry to bring to the general store. feel free to recruit him for help or just let him do it himself, to be honest; he's slower now (something he's trying not to think about just yet) but he can still get it done much faster. or b) he'll be doing a couple laps around beacon, mostly investigating the invincible and the bonfire, poking his head into rooms and just checking the general space out. don't mind him just suddenly appearing in your room or at the bar, heralded by a minor breeze wherever he pops up. ]

town meeting;

[ rastus isn't even the strangest person he's seen, neither are the forest spirits really, but they are kind of cute. he has his complimentary mug of hot cocoa that he hasn't taken a sip from yet, but should he spot you without one when he slides (a little too quickly) into the seat next to you, he'll offer it.

there's the sobering feeling of dread that he hasn't gotten over yet, and he doesn't think he will until he finds out why he's really here and how he can get back home. if he can at all. peter listens as he pokes around on his tablet — literally, these things don't exist back in the 90s. ]

Here I thought space missions were cool, [ he mutters, reaching out with one hand to catch the tray of acorns a nearby forest spirit dropped before it hits the ground. ] Nothing beats going on missions in the afterlife.

[Another man walks past Peter when he starts helping move supplies from the ship, reappearing several minutes later with a large case that can only hold on thing based on its bass-shaped outline. Thankfully, it has a set of wheels on the bottom that allow him to roll it across the floor and planks, as his distinctive limp would indicate that carrying it would be difficult.

Then he reaches the rough patch that is the shore. He sighs and hoists it with one hand to slowly take it to to the recreation center.]

[Ravus takes up the lantern, which he is told he must carry, in his only hand, and stands on the deck of the boat, impatient to reach whatever shore awaits them. The music does nothing to sooth his restlessness. Could this ship go any slower? He begins to pace, not overly concerned if he is displacing others as he stalks.]

[Some of what is said in the meeting, Ravus has already heard from his fellow Eosians, but he listens intently anyways. He makes the occasional note on his tablet. When the meeting concludes, he scowls down at his tablet, beyond pissed to be a situation like this...again.]

[ ugh.

so gwen never really thought about dying before, not really. she thought about it in the vague sense - that it would happen, that it's happened to the gwen stacys of about a thousand other realities. but she never thought about what happened after, if there would even be an after. so when she got shot and immediately swung a web to get her up onto a roof and away from the scene, she thought she would just need a minute. she's been shot before. okay, no, not like this. usually it's just a graze, and this- so isn't that. but it doesn't register as anything worse. and when she felt her breathing go funny, and her chest got heavy, and her vision got fuzzy, it actually felt a little bit like it does every time she gets her ass beat particularly hard. right? she expected to pass out, expected her body's healing to kick in at full force, and wake her up in about an hour with aching bones and the need for a ten hour nap.

it's fine.

but anyway, she's here now, and honestly? she probably seems kind of drunk, judging by the way she stumbles off the ferry, and can't seem to focus her eyes, in a way that has nothing to do with how dark things are around here. ]

Hey, um- [ she's just going to grip your shoulder, to steady herself. ] Can you point me towards the nearest bodega? Really need a sandwich. Or just like, a bagel. I'm not feeling super picky. [ she shakes her head ] Just need to eat something. Please.

[ no, she will not be telling anyone it's because her symbiote needs a snack and makes her feel completely famished when she'd otherwise just be kinda hungry. no, it's never that simple for her anymore. she's got a pounding headache and her chest hurts and the front of her shirt is definitely covered in blood but she won't be able to shift into something clean until venom gets to eat. so. here we are. begging strangers for directions to a bagel shop. cool. ]

town hall meeting

[ LUCKILY! by the time the town hall meeting is taking place, gwen's back in action! totally fine! fed and happy. well, less miserable, sure. she knows peter's here, so that's... okay, it's devastating, but in a selfish way she's really glad she's not alone here, and she's glad that he's not alone anymore either. not that he was, technically. she knows peter probably made a bunch of friends, because that's what peter benjamin parker does. everybody loves a charming nerd. but anyway.

she's actually paying attention to what's going on in the meeting, she is. she's trying. she's very much interested in what everyone has to say, all the little bits of info she can gather so she's not surprised by anything that might come up at any given time. venom's not great at surprises, so she'd like to keep them to a minimum.

all that said and done, when gwen's trying to sit and listen to people talk for long periods of time, she gets fidgety. and her version of fidgeting is to drum on whatever's in front of her. her heel bumps out to a bass drum beat that only she can hear, and although she only starts out tapping her thumbs on her thighs, then her thigh and her knee, eventually it turns into her knee and the back of the chair in front of her. nothing wild! she's not going full dan radcliffe or anything, but. y'know. it's probably a little annoying, even with everyone talking around them. ]

( for once, ambrose is glad for the new arrivals. he's never really against it but this gives him the chance to not think about his lantern and his anger and what he'd said and gone to people he thought of as friends.

really, he's surprised he'd even come out here before hiding in his room or at the bar had seemed like a really damn good idea. but, he comes out and takes a seat on a bench, kicking his feet up and trying to look like he wasn't bothered.

but, he was. the longer he was, the more bothered he was and nothing seemed to be getting better. people disappeared, died, and he was still around, still dead and stuck.

he hates that he wants someone from home to show up because that would mean they're dead too but he misses them. he misses home.

hell, he'd even take sabrina and all the trouble she'd bring with him. he sighs and leans back against the table, looking up at the sky.

with a flick of his wrist, he conjures a small ball and proceeds to toss it up and down in the air. be glad he's not tossing it incessantly against a table. )

Arrival/Harbor [Feb 1st]

[Sunlight kisses her cheeks as she walks towards the promise of an unexpected future. She takes his hand, warmth floods her palm and steps forward. This is her chance to live or... is it? Pain constricts her chest and her slender frame crumbles to the ground. The floor is cold. Riku's panicked expression fills her view as her focus begins to be encased by darkness.

She wakes to the gentle rocking of a ship and for a moment, she's sure she's on the island. They must have made it. Maybe she had collapsed?

Naminé pushes herself up and swings her legs over the side of the bed. A soft white light flickered from the lantern next to her and without knowing why, she took it and exited the room.] Riku? [Her voice was soft and sweet as she made her way to the deck of the ship.] Hello? Is anyone there?

[Darkness greets her and her pulse skips as panic constricts within her chest.

This isn't Destiny Island.]

Where am I?

[She doesn't believe that she's dead, she can't. She'd just been offered a life and then had it instantly snatched away from her.

Naminé slowly steps down the wooden path to the shore with those gathered around her. She doesn't know where this is or where she's going but she lets her feet guide her forwards, feeling as lost as she had in that stark white room.]

Exploration - Bonfire/Downtown [Feb 1st/2nd]

[Naminé doesn't know where to go or what to do now that she's here. She's learned some but nothing sinks in. It feels like a dream. It has to be.

She aimlessly wanders, keeping to roads and marked paths. The forests calls to her curiosity but her uncertainty keeps her in the soft light offered by the bonfire and the lanterns. The fire is hypnotic in its light, dancing and tugging at shadows that then stretch and blend into the darkness.

It's terrifying but Naminé puts on a brave face.

After stealing her will next to the bonfire, she heads towards the area known as Downtown. She doesn't know what makes this area different but it's further away from the bonfire with the bike shop and school located along the way. She's never attended school but she remembers that it's where Sora, Riku and Kairi learned before leaving the island. She's tempted to stop but her feet continue onward.

The streets of downtown are empty and dark, much like the rest of this strange island. Was she inside the darkness? Could she find her way home again? Is this what Terra experienced? These questions and a million more flutter on butterfly wings as they fade in and out of her focus.

Meeting [Feb 3rd]

[She doesn't know what questions to ask but she arrives at the bonfire to see if there is anyone she recognizes among the crowd. Naminé picks her way through the tables, grabs a cup of warm cider and an acorn before finding a place out of the way to sit.

Naminé doesn't ask anything but she toys with the acorn, poking and teasing it with the tip of her finger, and lets her warm cider get cold.

Her lantern is sitting on the table next to her, it's white metal twisting and encasing its light in a birdcage crowded with hearts. The lantern feels familiar but she's never seen it before. It calls to her and staring at the small light mingles an odd menagerie of happy and sad feelings.]

Naminé smiled back at him. "Thank you. I'd like that. I haven't ever been shopping before and I don't know what looks good on me." She's never owned anything before and these were all small items or things that she needed but it was exciting. She was still alive.

She followed his gaze to the lantern and frowned.

"What?" The words made sense but at the same time it didn't. "Why do I have to live so far from you? Can't I stay where you're staying?" It was true that she knew Riku as well and she wanted to be near those who are familiar to her but Sora was too far away. Maybe if she stayed with Sora she could ask Riku to stay there too. Then they all could be together.

She didn't want anyone to be alone.

Her lips tilt into a pout. "An hour is too far."

ARRIVAL.

( cas. cas. stop it. heart pounding, lungs on fire, one last desperate pleading look for cas to listen to him, the fight being assuredly squeezed from him; one last glance at sam, because if this is how he goes (he always thought it'd be in a blaze of glory), at least sam's still alive. they've been down this road before. maybe this time dean's reached a dead end.

and then he startles awake, gasping raggedly for breath.

alright, maybe not a dead end. he wonders briefly who brought him back this time, until he scans the dimly lit room, eyes wild for any sign of sam or psycho cas. all he finds instead is a small window and the sensation of being on a boat. which is strange, considering last he checked kansas didn't have any large bodies of water.

he tries to call for sam, only to find his throat is hoarse, his voice nearly gone. well, that's just great. he pats himself down before he heads toward the window: everything seems to be there that he had in lebanon; no angel blade, but at least he still has his switchblade. he doesn't trust unfamiliar spaces, especially when he's been separated from his brother and finds himself in an empty room on a boat. he squints out into the darkness, barely able to make out the shape of a lighthouse in the distance, then decides it's time to get the fuck out of here. conveniently, there's a lantern next to the bed, and some sort of tablet device which he tucks into his jacket pocket.

on his way toward the main deck, he calls for sam again and again, finding his voice a little better each time, though he still sounds like he's just come from a four hour rock concert and screamed his voice raw. only the song blasting from the speakers manages to distract him from searching for sam, because dean doesn't fuck with what he considers bad taste. )

Oh, come on. Who picks the music around here? ( yeah, beacon, he thinks your music sucks! give him time, he'll have everyone listening to classic rock. gotta get some led zeppelin up in here, or at least some kansas. foreigner. creedence clearwater revival. anything would be better than whatever's coming out of the speakers now.

that's really the least of his worries, though, considering he still has no idea where the hell he is or where his brother is, and neither of those things makes him a very pleasant person to be around. not to mention he's got an archangel literally knocking around inside his skull, which makes it hard to concentrate. his only source of relief (and, yet, at the same time, the source of his constant suffering) is the fact that michael hasn't escaped, even after dean being knocked out for who knows how long. sure, there are plenty of people who want him dead (and plenty who could succeed), but then what's with the ferry? the lantern? none of it makes any sense.

so once they've docked, he'll ask anyone who looks less confused than he is: )

If I'm really dead, which, honestly, not my first rodeo, then where the hell is Death? ( not to brag, but he kind of knows her personally, so like. what gives. billie's usually the first one knocking at his door. ) I'd even be satisfied with a Reaper. Any of that ring any bells?

( he really only shows up to the meeting because sam convinced him they should go, for answers if nothing else. dean isn't so sure they're actually going to get answers, but he supposes it can't hurt to mill around with people who have been here longer than they have and try to suss out who the locals are and what they're up to (even though he'd really prefer to start walking in the other direction and not look back, because surely there are better answers out there than here where they're stuck playing house. dean only believes in teamwork when it involves his family; strangers might be useful for information, but he's more convinced he and sam are gonna find a way out of this on their own because they always have.

before rastus appears, check him picking at the acorns, lamenting over the fact that they are not, in fact, pie. hell, he'd settle for bacon bits. anything but this. ) Really? Would it kill someone to bring h'or d'oeuvres next time? ( he says, assuming this is a regular occurrence, considering there have been people trapped here since before he arrived. and at this point he's really not picky. a tiny sandwich would be a godsend, even if all he really wants right now is a goddamned cheeseburger with extra bacon and a beer (or five). he'll have to settle for a cider instead and try not to complain about the lack of alcoholic content.

and then there's rastus, who puts dean on edge, has him reaching for his switchblade but not actually pulling it out. what the hell is this guy? he wonders if everyone else is seeing what he's seeing and why everyone seems perfectly okay with freaky big bird here. then rastus shuffles back toward the bonfire, telling them to talk to each other. well, that's real fucking helpful. maybe sam will have better luck talking to people; dean's not exactly in the mood, even if this does feel an awful lot like a real case. it doesn't exactly work the same when you're not impersonating law enforcement. all he has at the moment is snark, which he'll direct at whoever's nearby. )

[ He's been on the lookout since meeting Sam, senses alert, eyes scanning the ferry, the pier, the beach.

There's never just one Winchester. If Sam is here, any version of him, then Dean will either not be far behind, or will be working on breaking the world to save his brother. And Castiel knows from Sam's report that even though he distinctly knows he died and ended up here, he also kept going. Kept living - and dying - alongside Sam and Dean.

It's... painful, in a strange way. To know that he's the one who lost the toin coss. Life is a web of choices, and Castiel knows better than most that there are countless universes, countless timelines, countless alternatives. There must be a version of him that never chose humanity, never chose Dean in the greenroom. There must be a version of him that revealed himself in Lisa Braeden's back yard, that told Dean of Raphael's plans and Castiel's inability to stop him.

Perhaps he's been losing the coing toss more often than he cares to think.

Still... it pains him, strangely and in ways it shouldn't, to know that Dean and Sam grew older, and he grew alongside them, not in age but in experience and emotion. He wonders if Sam is bothered that Castiel as he is here, is decidedly not the Castiel he knows. Their Castiel, with years of shared, years that are much longer and more significant from the short-lived human perspective.

Wonders, when he spots the familiar width of Dean's shoulders, if Dean will find him lacking consequently.

Castiel beats his wings before he can question it too much, before he can talk himself into avoidance. He's done Dean the dishonour of leaving too often. Right here and now, Castiel chooses to go to him rather than flee from him, as he attempted right before his death, and failed at - lost that coin toss, definitely. He chooses, then, to turn a blind eye to everything off about Dean, to ignore the suspicion at what he can dimly sense, to ignore his own guilt and self-loathing over the feeling of Dean's face breaking under his own fist, a phantsom sensation that haunts and terrifies him. He won't let it keep him away,despite his every instinct wanting to follow the cues of his guilt.

He appears out of nothing, out of the darkness, right in front of Dean, too blue eyes finding and locking onto green to the sound of rustling feathers and the soft woosh of displaced air.

The light around them goes a little more blue through the stained glass of his lantern, moving and shifting as the white-blue grace swirls within it.

[ when daylight stands up to speak his peice, it's kind of hard to not notice him. being not only the tallest one in beacon at the moment - ten feet, five. - but (now) one of the only two mechanoids is something that makes him stick out. ]

Um… Right… You’ve probably met the spirits by now. The little guys who wear masks and cover themselves in clothes and fur and fluff and stuff. For the most part, the majority of them are friendly enough. Mischevious but friendly. Some are even willing to help us out, like the ones you'll find in major locations such as Postmaster General in the post office or the Librarian in the library.

[ he then raises his tablet up, switching towards a certain app and presenting it to the crowd for them to see. ] If you want to communicate with hem, you can do so using the app here for guidance on how to use the ocarinas. Ocarinas are available over at the general store- And, no, you don't have to pay for them or anything there.

With that all said... I do want to warn you guys to be careful of the spirits who happen to sport green-eyes, should you decide to explore the forests. [ he clears his vocoder, nervous to be talking for so long, but he marches on: ]

The green-eyed spirits seem to be the leader of the spirits and they're... pretty aggressive, to say the least. Communicating with them is difficult, even if you know the spirit language, and it's hard to tell what they're aiming to do. Combined with their ability to use psychic attacks and their willingness to go on the offensive, for one reason or another, you should probably avoid them at all costs.

daylight jogs up ahead to where he's hearing the noisest spirit sounds in his life, worried that something may have happened to the spirits. oh no- did someone try to-

oh! wait! he knows that height anywhere! ]

Rosinante! Hey! [ he gets closer and closer now that he's confident on who is involved in the strange shenanigans. but the close he gets, the more his smile fades into puzzled bemusement. ] I see you're... making... friends...? I think?

[ that's the only way for daylight to describe the scene before him: several small spirits, all wearing tattered and faded bedsheets with strange crayon scribbles on them, crowd around rosinante. none of them were attempting to attack him or anything, far as day can tell. they're merely surrounding him, hopping up and down frantically as they let out noise after urgent noise to the man.
