INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY

INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY
GRAVEYARD WHISTLING
characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: february 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. rastus gathers the town for a debriefing meeting.
warnings: n/a.
welcome to beacon.
It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.
You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern glowing with a healthy flame.
You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.
Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.
In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.•••
On February 3, after the newcomers have had a chance to settle in, everyone's tablets will ping with a message from @rastus!
Come tob onfier squae.Pl eaas , we wikll disucss our orogress sincereeluy rastuaas I am th ebonfire keeeeeeepr.
...Followed by another message a few minutes later, this time from @keeper
Omg will everyone head down to Bonfire Square for Rastus' town meeting please? He wants to recap what you've all learned so far!!!
And can someone please teach him that he can record an audio message and then send it to everyone instead of looping the whole dang town in on a group text?? 😂😂😂😂
Assuming you do indeed head down to Bonfire Square after all that, what you'll find is this: a series of benches and tables have been set up surrounding the bonfire, and there's enough seating for all of Beacon's residents. As people take their seats near the fire, the barkeeper forest spirits from the Invincible toddle through the crowd with trays of hot chocolate and warm cider, along with a sampler tray of acorns and pinecones, if that's your thing.
Once everyone's here and settled, sipping on hot drinks and maybe busting a tooth on an acorn, Rastus hobbles forward to address the crowd:
"Crrk. Hello. I am Rastus. I tend to the bonfire. I have tended to the bonfire, mrawk, for years and years. You are doing, rmmm, well. Good."
He nods to emphasize the point. Yes, you are doing good.
"Talk. To each other. Share what you have learned. Yes. Crarrk. It is important."
He nods again, and then... shuffles back over to his post near the bonfire, waiting for anyone who might come by with an interest in torches. Seems it's up to you all to get each other up to speed?
Luckily for all the newcomers who may find themselves confused by their sudden arrival here, their tablets and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.
ooc.
Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! We're thrilled to welcome so many new faces into the community, and you've come at a great time! Alongside this intro log, we have our very first cat herd, which is essentially a recap of the plot thus far, as well as a rundown on a ton of great info to help get you started in the game.
But don't feel like you have to read it all right this second! ICly, Rastus will call everyone together for the town meeting on February 3 to give new characters (and players) a chance to get their bearings before smacking them in the face with all the plot. This log will cover both the ferry arrival and the cat herd meeting, so feel free to bounce around in time in your toplevels.
Remember, too, that all of the plot info available in the cat herd can now be considered common knowledge! Newbies and oldbies alike, feel free to assume that your character learns as much of that plot info as you like at this meeting, regardless of whether or not you thread it out.
And of course, go ahead and introduce yourselves on the OOC intro, as well!

He looks a little (okay, a lot) freaked out, and his initial exclamation has the person she'd been rambling off to offer him a really solid side-eye before abandoning ship and finding somewhere else to stand. Which, you know, is great, because Steve's probably about to cause a scene here and no one wants to be caught in this collateral maelstrom. ]
What do you mean, I can't be here? You can't! [ Yes, this could go on forever. But wait, there's more — ] I've been here for months and the only thing keeping me okay with that is knowing you and the others made it out okay.
[ He squeezes her briefly, full of all sorts of turmoil, before he lets go and steps back. ]
You're not supposed to be here. You were supposed to be alive and Mindflayer-free, heading on home with the rest of them. This is not the deal!

( Robin is all ready to go off about that right here and now, but then Steve takes just enough of a step back that she remembers exactly where they are right now -- and that is a very populated, very public space. So instead she just scowls, scoops up her stupid lantern off of the floor next to her, and grabs back onto Steve's arm with the other hand.
He doesn't get much of a choice in the matter before Robin is marching the two of them off to the edge of the gathering, still not really private but far enough away that Robin doesn't feel bad when she rounds on Steve again. And for some reason, she looks pissed -- enough so that her greeting is a hand slapped angrily against his chest. )
I'm not supposed to be anywhere. You're supposed to be there fighting that stupid monster with me, idiot. What do you mean, months?
no subject
Now that he easily allows himself to be dragged off away from the rest of the crowd, which, yeah, okay, is a pretty smart idea given the way he'd been raising his voice with each exclamation, he has a chance to take a breath and piece some logic together, starting with Robin appearing in this nightmare hellscape of a town. ]
I was, okay? I was out there — back there — fighting that monster. That was the intention anyway. I was tryna help the others out, you know? With the car. But I guess the impact of it was too much, or whatever, and I —
[ Ugh, goddamnit. He hates reliving that memory. ]
So, yeah! It's been months! After the crash, I wound up in this place and I haven't figured out a way to leave. Yet. There's a plan.
[ Maybe. ]

Oh shit. Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit. Robin goes to argue again, but the realisation hits her like a ton of bricks. Steve died too, in that accident, and he thinks that she's fine because he doesn't know what happened. Robin's mouth kind of flaps open and shut uselessly a few times as she flounders for a response.
She can't tell him.
Robin's not stupid by any stretch, she knows exactly how it will go down if Steve finds out what happened. And she doesn't have an answer for the whole 'it's been months' thing but frankly that little mystery is being seriously de-prioritised in favour of Mission: Keep Your Mouth Shut. )
Right, of course.
( There's definitely some kind of lump in her throat but Robin swallows it down. Laughs again, short and clipped. Punches his shoulder again, because she's never been a great actress at the best of times and this is probably just about the biggest cover up she's ever had to pull off. Give her the Russians any day. )
God, sorry it's just been-- it's been a lot, you know. Wild couple of days. Kind of the worst actually, but uh...
( she gestures at Steve, and when she smiles this time it's actually far more genuine. Her voice softens considerably, she can't help herself. It really has been a hard couple of days, after all. That much wasn't a lie. )
I wish you weren't here but..I'm really glad to see you, Steve. Shocking, I know.

It also means he's gonna be doing his goddamned best to protect her while she's here, the same way he'd sworn to himself to protect Nancy and Eleven while they were here too. Not that he'd ever say that kind of thing aloud, cool guy reputation and all — yep, but he means it.
Finally he lets out a breath, the tension loosening in his shoulders, and shakes his head. ]
Hey, the feeling's mutual. It's been ... it's been pretty tough without you around. But don't let that get to your head or anything.
no subject
( It's only natural that she rolls her eyes. Heavens forbid they just seriously admit to one another that they're friends now, that they care about each other. Robin thinks she still might rather poke pins in her eyes than plainly state her feelings.
Still, it doesn't stop her from pulling him into a rather abrupt hug. It's too sudden, no warning given, and definitely too hard. It's more of a squeeze than an embrace, and she holds him in it for what's probably entirely too long. She wasn't kidding though, it has been rough. Much as she's loathe to ever admit it, she already knows things are going to be better with him here.
So she just swallows again, because she really needs to get her shit together soon, or things will get messy. )
Yeah, well.
( By the time she actually releases him from the...kind of crushing hug, Robin has managed to pull out a grin and everything. She is genuinely happy to see him, and it is so much easier to really, truly smile when she focuses on that and not the Everything Else of it all. )
We're a team again Harrington, so you better get used to it.
no subject
Pretty ridiculous.
When she lets him go, it's with a grin that he can't help but echo. And then he's shaking his head again, hand going up to run through his hair. ]
If there's any team to be on, its this one. [ His expression is almost soft, wholehearted. Whatever might have happened, they made an awesome team — the 'Scoops Troop', Dustin had dubbed them. It was kind of a stupid name at first, and maybe it's the sentimentality of it all, but he can appreciate it now.
Hell, he misses it.
So. Enough of that, or whatever. ] We've already got the matching uniforms, which — yes, is the only thing I have here. I can't even get a decent pair of Levis in this place, can you believe that?
no subject
( If there's maybe a tiny little sniff that comes alongside her amused response, she'll kindly thank Steve to ignore it. This has already been more than enough in terms of real feelings and emotions, the sooner they can Not Talk About It the better.
Which is great, because the jeans comment actually startles a real chuckle out of her. It's not at all what she's expecting -- their uniform problem is something that needs to be dealt with, eventually, but it's hardly a pressing matter -- but it's funny and she laughs, finally not just a nervous knee jerk reaction but an actual laugh. )
Oh God, not the Levis! What are you going to tell me next, no hairspray?
( Naturally the comment is paired with a little hair ruffle of her own, a flippy little gesture clearly meant to mimic Steve's. )
no subject
Seriously, Robin. There is no hairspray. No decent anything in this place. My best feature? [ He tugs helplessly at his surprisingly still-springy coif. ] It's suffering here.
