INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY

INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY
GRAVEYARD WHISTLING

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: february 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. rastus gathers the town for a debriefing meeting.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern glowing with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

On February 3, after the newcomers have had a chance to settle in, everyone's tablets will ping with a message from @rastus!

Come tob onfier squae.Pl eaas , we wikll disucss our orogress sincereeluy rastuaas I am th ebonfire keeeeeeepr.

...Followed by another message a few minutes later, this time from @keeper

Omg will everyone head down to Bonfire Square for Rastus' town meeting please? He wants to recap what you've all learned so far!!!

And can someone please teach him that he can record an audio message and then send it to everyone instead of looping the whole dang town in on a group text?? 😂😂😂😂

Assuming you do indeed head down to Bonfire Square after all that, what you'll find is this: a series of benches and tables have been set up surrounding the bonfire, and there's enough seating for all of Beacon's residents. As people take their seats near the fire, the barkeeper forest spirits from the Invincible toddle through the crowd with trays of hot chocolate and warm cider, along with a sampler tray of acorns and pinecones, if that's your thing.

Once everyone's here and settled, sipping on hot drinks and maybe busting a tooth on an acorn, Rastus hobbles forward to address the crowd:

"Crrk. Hello. I am Rastus. I tend to the bonfire. I have tended to the bonfire, mrawk, for years and years. You are doing, rmmm, well. Good."

He nods to emphasize the point. Yes, you are doing good.

"Talk. To each other. Share what you have learned. Yes. Crarrk. It is important."

He nods again, and then... shuffles back over to his post near the bonfire, waiting for anyone who might come by with an interest in torches. Seems it's up to you all to get each other up to speed?

Luckily for all the newcomers who may find themselves confused by their sudden arrival here, their tablets and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! We're thrilled to welcome so many new faces into the community, and you've come at a great time! Alongside this intro log, we have our very first cat herd, which is essentially a recap of the plot thus far, as well as a rundown on a ton of great info to help get you started in the game.

But don't feel like you have to read it all right this second! ICly, Rastus will call everyone together for the town meeting on February 3 to give new characters (and players) a chance to get their bearings before smacking them in the face with all the plot. This log will cover both the ferry arrival and the cat herd meeting, so feel free to bounce around in time in your toplevels.

Remember, too, that all of the plot info available in the cat herd can now be considered common knowledge! Newbies and oldbies alike, feel free to assume that your character learns as much of that plot info as you like at this meeting, regardless of whether or not you thread it out.

And of course, go ahead and introduce yourselves on the OOC intro, as well!

No, he definitively doesn't understand the waving. In fact, he can't even read whatever it is on the bulletin board because of the waving. He'd make a lunge for it if he knew he wouldn't piss off the spirits for taking the board away.

"Ah, that's a marvelous idea. While I didn't see any hostile spirits wandering the explored regions and forests, it will not hurt to be cautious. Although," Ignis winces himself as he sees the pins scatter all around (briefly reminds him of King Regis' office after kid Noctis is done rushing through it), "I do believe it would be the best to put it on the most visited place in Beacon. Somewhere where a lot of people can read it. In front of the Invincible, perhaps?" He crouches briefly to pick up several pins that rolled over and then hands them to Jason.

Jason nods, "People were kind of doing patrols already from what I heard. I thought it was a good idea to make it a little more official." He smiles at little, holding out a hand to accept the pins, "Don't worry. I have one up at the Invincible already. That's where we were coming from. But the Invincible is full and I figured some people would start taking up residence out this way. I wanted to cover my bases."

He'd done a lot of thinking on that before he'd even asked Rastus for the materials. He turns to find where the spirits have gotten to now. They've made it to the elevator and the Concierge seems to be berating them in the language of spirits. Jason can only guess what he is telling them. Jason glances at Ignis, "Just a sec."

He pockets the pins and brings his ocarina up to his lips. He plays a short, unhappy sounding note. The two spirits carrying the board chirp and turn. One says something that Jason thinks is 'Sorry.' And they come rushing back over, the board bobbing along between them. Jason plays another note, a thank you, then he points to the wall by the door, "It needs to go there."

"Well, it seems you thought of everything," Ignis adds with a short nod and slight smile. And it's true that Invincible is full, which he didn't expect happen, to be honest. But it shouldn't be too surprising with the boats bringing in people here every month.

He watches Jason play the tune and 'converse' with the spirits, impressed that they listen to him. Ignis wishes there is some kind of way to figure out what these guys actually are. He wants to offer help but it seems that Jason has everything under control for now.

"There is a restaurant as a part of this hotel," Ignis says and looks around for more pins and thumbtacks that got lost. "It is run by spirits so I was wondering if they could actually cook." But right now he can't figure it out because saltshaker is making it snow in the kitchen.

He had tried to anyway. The only real problem is he hopes the spirits don't mess with the board too much once it's up. The last thing he needs is for it to get covered in pushpins again. Though, as long as it is up, he supposes it's not that big of a problem.

"There's a restaurant? This is my first time coming inside actually." He glances around and notices the area that is likely the entrance to the restaurant. "Wouldn't the easiest way to tell to be to try it?"

The restaurant itself is properly arranged, cleaned up to the point everything sparkles, even glasses- which is weird for a dead and empty Downtown, right? The bar also looks nice and has a nice stash of liquor in it as well, even though currently no one is tending to it.

"I... am not sure how wise that would be. One of the spirits is a saltshaker and he keeps snowing salt everywhere." Ignis doesn't want to die from high levels of sodium in his blood, thank you very much. "They are quite an unruly bunch, but not violent." As if to prove his point, there's a "delighted" screech from the restaurant and a crash and Ignis sighs. "That would be Screecher."

Jason looks confused momentarily, his brow furrowing in confusion. "I thought that was his name...Do you mean he's an actual salt shaker?" Jason is not sure how to feel about this information, because it changes what he'd been visualizing entirely. The spirits really were much too varied.

Finally, he adds, "That doesn't seem very sanitary."

He winces at the loud screech though definitely appears to have growing concerns about this kitchen, "Wow. I can't decide if that makes me want to check out the kitchen or just stick to the lobby."

"It is hard to pinpoint the spirit's shape, but it is definitively salt that he's tossing around," Ignis confirms. When he first arrived at the restaurant, the spirit made a small pile of salt on his shoe. "And no, it is not sanitary. I'd refrain from ordering actual food from here, less it contains crazy doses of sodium in it."

His gut tells him even cakes would be salty.

"As I said, they are not violent. With all the rushing around, I wonder if they are... stressed, perhaps? Unsure, as the only spirit that communicated with us was Concierge, very helpful and calm spirit."

Jason wasn't typically interested in consuming he stuff prepared by the spirits anyway. Even after all this time it was difficult to shake his prejudices about it. He nods at Ignis's suggestion though. Jason was a teenager and didn't necessarily have a sophisticated food palate...but even he wasn't going to enjoy overly salted foods.

Most likely.

"No one's stayed here in awhile, right? I guess if they haven't had guests in awhile they would be stressful and exciting."

Ignis cooks for himself and his closest friends most of the time and also lends a hand when needed in the Invincible's kitchen. He would be happy to serve Jason a decent meal if he is interested. For now, they have some rowdy spirits on their hands.

"No. Downtown wasn't located until recently. There are still many closed-off places in the vicinity. I wouldn't be surprised if they held more spirits like these within them." But why are they stationed here, why do they choose to stay? He wonders if they are hiding from green-eyed ones.

It was a risk then. It never hurt to know what was out there, to continue gathering information. Finding the Downtown area had been well time since otherwise they would be facing down a housing shortage. On the other hand, it seemed with each new location or mystery that was exposed more spirits -- some hostile -- took their place.

"Maybe once things settle down here...they'll calm down. Most of the spirits that stay close to the Invincible and the Village are." Well, calm might be the wrong word for them, but they aren't overly hostile. So he'll take that for what it is.

The housing was, indeed, the biggest problem they were facing. Especially because people keep coming and it is the middle of the winter. It would've been disastrous if they didn't have where to stay in this cold. One can't forever stay at the bar in Invincible.

"I hope so too. We should take a really good look around this place and the forest that surrounds it. Perhaps we will run into some clues." Downtown appears to be quite big and inhabited a lot of people. And people living always leave marks behind- good or bad.
