INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY

INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY
GRAVEYARD WHISTLING

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: february 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. rastus gathers the town for a debriefing meeting.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern glowing with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

On February 3, after the newcomers have had a chance to settle in, everyone's tablets will ping with a message from @rastus!

Come tob onfier squae.Pl eaas , we wikll disucss our orogress sincereeluy rastuaas I am th ebonfire keeeeeeepr.

...Followed by another message a few minutes later, this time from @keeper

Omg will everyone head down to Bonfire Square for Rastus' town meeting please? He wants to recap what you've all learned so far!!!

And can someone please teach him that he can record an audio message and then send it to everyone instead of looping the whole dang town in on a group text?? 😂😂😂😂

Assuming you do indeed head down to Bonfire Square after all that, what you'll find is this: a series of benches and tables have been set up surrounding the bonfire, and there's enough seating for all of Beacon's residents. As people take their seats near the fire, the barkeeper forest spirits from the Invincible toddle through the crowd with trays of hot chocolate and warm cider, along with a sampler tray of acorns and pinecones, if that's your thing.

Once everyone's here and settled, sipping on hot drinks and maybe busting a tooth on an acorn, Rastus hobbles forward to address the crowd:

"Crrk. Hello. I am Rastus. I tend to the bonfire. I have tended to the bonfire, mrawk, for years and years. You are doing, rmmm, well. Good."

He nods to emphasize the point. Yes, you are doing good.

"Talk. To each other. Share what you have learned. Yes. Crarrk. It is important."

He nods again, and then... shuffles back over to his post near the bonfire, waiting for anyone who might come by with an interest in torches. Seems it's up to you all to get each other up to speed?

Luckily for all the newcomers who may find themselves confused by their sudden arrival here, their tablets and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! We're thrilled to welcome so many new faces into the community, and you've come at a great time! Alongside this intro log, we have our very first cat herd, which is essentially a recap of the plot thus far, as well as a rundown on a ton of great info to help get you started in the game.

But don't feel like you have to read it all right this second! ICly, Rastus will call everyone together for the town meeting on February 3 to give new characters (and players) a chance to get their bearings before smacking them in the face with all the plot. This log will cover both the ferry arrival and the cat herd meeting, so feel free to bounce around in time in your toplevels.

Remember, too, that all of the plot info available in the cat herd can now be considered common knowledge! Newbies and oldbies alike, feel free to assume that your character learns as much of that plot info as you like at this meeting, regardless of whether or not you thread it out.

And of course, go ahead and introduce yourselves on the OOC intro, as well!

Daylight looks surprised when Jason begins to apologise to him, holding out an ice cream for him to take. (And Day accepts it because! Oh! Edible dirt flavour! One of his favourites.)

When Jason asks if they're still friends, Day smiles at him and his winglets hitch up, fluttering in an affectionate fashion. "Of course we're still friends, Jason! I'm not holding our last encounter against you. I'm glad you weren't injured or hurt." They both know at this point that Beacon has a weird way of either trying to test them or break them. (Jury's still out on which is which. Because the implications are very different.)

"For what its worth- I think you handled the situation well, all things considered. The others I met when the lanterns were acting up was... an interesting one." The spirit behind Day makes a little inquisitive trill, their fluff, ah, fluffing up in worry. Day looks at them, trying to soothe his friend with reassurances: "No, Fluffy, this isn't Scary Knifeman. That's a very different person altogether."

Fluffy makes a doubtful trill and peers out from behind Day with great suspicion, fluff still expanded and eyes behind the too-large mask very, very wide.

"Really? Cause I'm pretty sure I remember blowing up at least two trees. And you looked pretty freaked." Jason looks up at Daylight, clearly still concerned. He may not have been himself, but he sure as hell remembers it clearly enough. He'd made Daylight scream at one point and he can remember thinking some pretty nasty things about that too.

His gaze drifts back to the spirit, "Who is Scary Knifeman?" He holds his hands up for the spirit and then opens up his jacket, "No knives here. See?" Sure enough, Jason is knife-less. He's also glad he thought to leave his sword back at the Invincible. It hadn't seemed right to bring that to an apology meeting.

An idea occurs to him as he lowers his hands again. He reaches for the purple ocarina he keeps hanging from his neck. He keeps his gaze on the spirit and plays a pleasant series of notes. He'd gotten some of the melodies memorized and one that seemed pretty important was the 'I come in Peace' expression. It was one of the few he could play without fear of making a discordant squeak instead.

"I think trees blowing up would freak out anyone," Day replies back with an easy grin to Jason, his winglets fluttering to show no hard feelings for what happened. No one was... Well... No one got out of that event smelling like roses, in Day's opinion, so he's not going to hold it against anyone for what transpired. "At least you didn't aim them at me on purpose or anything." That's what Day wants to believe and is going to stick to that story so there.

Fluffy, for their part, is still Suspicious™ of this unfamiliar face. Even when Jason shows that he has no weapons on his person and Day - who quickly mouths, 'Dr. Ingram' to Jason at his question - shows no ill-will, Fluffy's flowers ruffle in obvious discontent. A hiccup-chirr that must have been meant to be a hiss.

It's only when he begins to play from his ocarina does Fluffy calm down and peer at Jason with a less distrusting aura surrounding them. After a few seconds pass, they snuffle behind Day and let out a series of cheeps and peeps. Day is quick to translate:

"Fluffy says they're not sure about you just yet but they're willing to try. It's nice to speak in their tongue." Daylight pauses, listening to the next thing Fluffy has to say, the spirit now surprisingly chatty. "Long as you swear that I don't have to put you in the magic bubble. Then everything is fine with them, Not-Scary."

Jason looks away. He knows Daylight is playing it off like it's not as big a deal, but to Jason it felt like he'd lost control of himself. Like he really had become like Hercules for a bit...given in to madness and rage. Still, Daylight does make a good point, "I think...I think even with the light being what it was there was still a part of me that didn't want to hurt any one. I didn't...I can't end up like my half-brother." Jason's grip on his lantern tightens. His life was already enough Greek tragedy without following in the footsteps of Hercules.

He returns his gaze to Day and Fluffy. He still looks a little confused, probably because he hasn't had much of a chance to interact with anyone named Dr. Ingram. "I'm still a little rusty," he says, in response to the comment about speaking spirit, "I had to retrain my hand to play the right notes and that was on top of the fact that I'm not exactly musically inclined."

There's a pause and then Jason goes: "Uh...wait...who has magic bubble powers?"

Daylight looks sympathetic at the mention of Jason's half-brother and the way Jason tightens his grip on his lantern. He's gotten some idea of what Jason had to face back home before his arrival to Beacon. Much as their last encounter was, er, tense, the things he learns has Day wanting to ask for details about that. Or ask Jason if he wants to talk about it or something.

-But it looks like Jason beats him to it. Asking for information, that is.

"Um- I do," Day answers with a bashful smile, raising a servo for emphasis. "I can generate force fields thanks to my control of arc energy - er, basically electricity but from space - and, more often than not, they come in the shape of domes. I think that's why Fluffy calls it a 'magic bubble.' Probably haven't seen it before."

Fluffy lets out a chirr of confirmation, wriggling further and further away from behind Day's form. They don't seem as shy or suspicious around Jason anymore.

Magic bubbles did not equal electricity in his brain, so it takes Jason a moment to process Daylight's explanation. I'm sorry, did you just say you use electricity from space? Jason stares for a moment, his eyes going wide with surprise and then he smiles and he is nothing but excited. "Wow! That sounds so cool! I didn't know we had similar power sets. I've never tried shaping lightning or the electricity I can generate before...though I've turned the wind into ropes and containers before."

That was still a fairly recent development though, so maybe with some practice he could figure out how to make 'magic bubbles' as well. Although, wait a second, Jason tilts his head.

"How different is arc energy from regular electrical energy?"
