INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY

INTRO LOG: FEBRUARY
GRAVEYARD WHISTLING
characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: february 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. rastus gathers the town for a debriefing meeting.
warnings: n/a.
welcome to beacon.
It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.
You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern glowing with a healthy flame.
You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.
Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.
In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.•••
On February 3, after the newcomers have had a chance to settle in, everyone's tablets will ping with a message from @rastus!
Come tob onfier squae.Pl eaas , we wikll disucss our orogress sincereeluy rastuaas I am th ebonfire keeeeeeepr.
...Followed by another message a few minutes later, this time from @keeper
Omg will everyone head down to Bonfire Square for Rastus' town meeting please? He wants to recap what you've all learned so far!!!
And can someone please teach him that he can record an audio message and then send it to everyone instead of looping the whole dang town in on a group text?? 😂😂😂😂
Assuming you do indeed head down to Bonfire Square after all that, what you'll find is this: a series of benches and tables have been set up surrounding the bonfire, and there's enough seating for all of Beacon's residents. As people take their seats near the fire, the barkeeper forest spirits from the Invincible toddle through the crowd with trays of hot chocolate and warm cider, along with a sampler tray of acorns and pinecones, if that's your thing.
Once everyone's here and settled, sipping on hot drinks and maybe busting a tooth on an acorn, Rastus hobbles forward to address the crowd:
"Crrk. Hello. I am Rastus. I tend to the bonfire. I have tended to the bonfire, mrawk, for years and years. You are doing, rmmm, well. Good."
He nods to emphasize the point. Yes, you are doing good.
"Talk. To each other. Share what you have learned. Yes. Crarrk. It is important."
He nods again, and then... shuffles back over to his post near the bonfire, waiting for anyone who might come by with an interest in torches. Seems it's up to you all to get each other up to speed?
Luckily for all the newcomers who may find themselves confused by their sudden arrival here, their tablets and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.
ooc.
Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! We're thrilled to welcome so many new faces into the community, and you've come at a great time! Alongside this intro log, we have our very first cat herd, which is essentially a recap of the plot thus far, as well as a rundown on a ton of great info to help get you started in the game.
But don't feel like you have to read it all right this second! ICly, Rastus will call everyone together for the town meeting on February 3 to give new characters (and players) a chance to get their bearings before smacking them in the face with all the plot. This log will cover both the ferry arrival and the cat herd meeting, so feel free to bounce around in time in your toplevels.
Remember, too, that all of the plot info available in the cat herd can now be considered common knowledge! Newbies and oldbies alike, feel free to assume that your character learns as much of that plot info as you like at this meeting, regardless of whether or not you thread it out.
And of course, go ahead and introduce yourselves on the OOC intro, as well!

daylight vis lornlit. | original.
[ when daylight stands up to speak his peice, it's kind of hard to not notice him. being not only the tallest one in beacon at the moment - ten feet, five. - but (now) one of the only two mechanoids is something that makes him stick out. ]
I’m Daylight vis Lornlit. You can call me ‘Day’ if you want, since I know that’s easier for people.
Um… Right… You’ve probably met the spirits by now. The little guys who wear masks and cover themselves in clothes and fur and fluff and stuff. For the most part, the majority of them are friendly enough. Mischevious but friendly. Some are even willing to help us out, like the ones you'll find in major locations such as Postmaster General in the post office or the Librarian in the library.
[ he then raises his tablet up, switching towards a certain app and presenting it to the crowd for them to see. ] If you want to communicate with hem, you can do so using the app here for guidance on how to use the ocarinas. Ocarinas are available over at the general store- And, no, you don't have to pay for them or anything there.
With that all said... I do want to warn you guys to be careful of the spirits who happen to sport green-eyes, should you decide to explore the forests. [ he clears his vocoder, nervous to be talking for so long, but he marches on: ]
The green-eyed spirits seem to be the leader of the spirits and they're... pretty aggressive, to say the least. Communicating with them is difficult, even if you know the spirit language, and it's hard to tell what they're aiming to do. Combined with their ability to use psychic attacks and their willingness to go on the offensive, for one reason or another, you should probably avoid them at all costs.
So, um, yeah. That's all I have to say- [ ah! before he finishes off. ] Actually- One more thing- If you guys need help in learning the ocarina or want to learn more about the spirit language, you can come to me. I'm more than happy to give lessons. I'm 'daylit' on the network and you can find me over at Miners #5 over at the village.
[ with that, daylight sits back down on the ground. anyone is free to speak with him after his talk, any point during the meeting. he'll be a bit busy trying to take notes of the meeting, hoping to create the minutes with the help of mr. ambus, but he's clearly willing to help others. ]
ii;;; comparing notes.
[ when rastus’ meeting begins to wind down and others start to drift away, day takes the chance to get the others' thoughts on the notes he's been taking so far.
he flags someone down who he thinks won't mind losing a minute or two talking to him, quickly showing them his tablet to them. specifically, showing them his tablet that's open on the notepad ap. ] Mind if I got your opinion on this? I've been trying to organise them but having a fresh pair of eyes never hurts.
iii;;; between you and me.
[ locked prompts for planned activities will be found as replies to this toplevel! specifically for rosinante (
iv;;; wildcard!!
[ want to do something else? want a locked top-level of your very own? feel free to do it through this option! also, you’re welcome to hit me up/plot with me via my plurk prognostic if there’s something specific you want. ]
locked to rosinante: we call scream!
daylight jogs up ahead to where he's hearing the noisest spirit sounds in his life, worried that something may have happened to the spirits. oh no- did someone try to-
oh! wait! he knows that height anywhere! ]
Rosinante! Hey! [ he gets closer and closer now that he's confident on who is involved in the strange shenanigans. but the close he gets, the more his smile fades into puzzled bemusement. ] I see you're... making... friends...? I think?
[ that's the only way for daylight to describe the scene before him: several small spirits, all wearing tattered and faded bedsheets with strange crayon scribbles on them, crowd around rosinante. none of them were attempting to attack him or anything, far as day can tell. they're merely surrounding him, hopping up and down frantically as they let out noise after urgent noise to the man.
and the best way to describe the noises they're making are literal keyboard smashes. sadlkajds! suwrehid!! lkasdldkjsdf!!! ]
I'M HERE I'M HERE omg
Bewildered, the best he can do right now is keep his lantern high in case they're trying to grab it, and when Daylight shows up, he breathes a sigh of immense relief.]
Hey! Hey, I ... Don't know what they want. They're really insistent, though. They must want something but I can't figure out what.
no subject
[ daylight crouches down and lets out an inquisitive tune with the use of galateion, finally catching the attention of the spirits at long last when he begins to ask what's the matter.
most of the spirits scurry off to day, squeaking and squawking in alarm in search of help and sympathy, but one sticks close to rosinante. their hopping intensifies as does the strange sounds coming from their tiny, tiny bodies: asdsfdslkm!! dflsdfkslkg!!! dlfksdfdserishjskfdsh!! ]
Yeah... Okay... Yeah... Sure... Uh-huh... [ day continues to nod along, listening to what must be a longwinded tale from the gaggle of spirits who now surround his frame.
his look of patient understanding quickly morphs into obvious confusion however. ] They're stuck in a what? [ he repeats back the melody, trying to make sure he heard what he heard from them. ] In a tree? How did they get up in a tree?
no subject
The answer to the mystery - or, partial answer maybe - is just as puzzling. Don't the spirits live in trees? What sort of spirit gets stuck up one and can't be helped out by the others? Now he just wants to know, and he walks closer to the group as if trying to listen in better, even though he can't make out a single word.]
Maybe that's why they surrounded me and not some of the others here. Wanted someone tall. Did they say where?
no subject
daylight would like to know too but he's too polite to do such a thing. it may have to remain a mystery now.nodding, daylight asks the question in turn and is soon met with a chorus of excitedly hopeful squeaks, the spirits now making a grab for his arms.
knowing when to fold it when it comes to spirit determination, day stands up and allows himself to be tugged towards where their friend is. he looks over to rosinante, wearing an expression that hints he's pretty much used to these turn of events. ]
Well- Looks like they're going to lead us there.
[ he uses 'us' because the spirit who stuck with rosinante is now trying to herd him all by themselves, circling around the other tall one to ensure he goes along with them. sdlsffsliej!! wejusdkl!!! djknslsdserfljdf!!!! ]
no subject
The spirit circling him intently is pretty quickly a problem. He swerves to avoid stepping on it, which quickly sends him crashing to the ground with his arms around his lantern to shield it. The impact is slightly softened by the snow, which never really melted much after that blizzard, so at least he has that. He springs back up to his feet quickly, gasping at the cold as snow has managed to get down past his scarf and onto the back of his neck and that's just the worst-]
I'm fine. Come on.
[The commentary is directed at the worried spirit, which thankfully was not fallen on, and to prove it he continues onward.]
locked to coraline: two friends, giving out cookies, fifteen feet apart because day is too big, wow.
[ day and coraline currently await at the dock, primed and ready to welcome the newcomers with some hospitality and cookies. he has a feeling the latter might be more appreciated than the former. he remembers waking up, helm spinning and tanks churning from both hunger and neaseu.
as the two wait out in the cool darkness, day fidgets where he's standing. from both impatience and from the fact he wants to ask coraline something- ]
Do you think... [ he trails off and then shakes his helm, deciding against asking coraline the question that was just on the tip of his glossa. ] No. Never mind. Forget I tried to ask anything dumb. [ subject change! totally natural subject change. ] What are the flavours you baked for the cookies?
comes in 50 years late i am so sorry
She stares out into the waters, eyes peeled for first signs of the ferry, though she also accepts that literally everyone else will see it before she manages t-- ]
Huh? Wait what?
[ She startles, looking up at Daylight with a quizzical expression on her face. ]
Sorry, kinda zoned out… what did you say?
locked to jo: a little spirit music.
[ day beams at jo as he pulls the ocarina from his mouth, having just played a melody that basically said, 'greetings. i am an old friend and i seek help/food.' while not the most complicated thing he's ever strung together with the ocarina, it's certainly a step above simple sentences and one words.
he rests his servos on his hips, winglets flicking up in confidence. ] Now it's your turn! Try to play the melody like I just did and I'll let you know how accurate it is when you're done.
Feel free to take it slow as you want. The spirits don't seem to mind waiting long as you, ah, finish the song and-slash-or sentence to them.
Re: locked to jo: a little spirit music.
The ocarina is a strange instrument and using it as a way to communicate makes her a little more nervous than if she was just playing music.
She doesn't want to make a mistake. Communication is important, it's always been a big part of her arsenal. It's been hard for her to get over it and just try.
She huffs a little at how easy he makes it seem.]
They don't mind? That's reassuring.
no subject
I once, like, totally fumbled when speaking with some friends of mine and they still replied to me! I think long as you finish the sentence, they seem to understand whatever you're saying to them. [ which is making daylight consider something the more he studies and practices the language but- he thinks he needs a few more weeks of observation before he can confidently release his findings.
last thing he wants to do is release something that proves dangerously wrong. he wants to better the bridge between the spirits and the others, no worsen it. ] -Do you need me to repeat the sentence to you one last time? As a review?
no subject
It's from an old movie on Earth. Play it one more time.
no subject
when the context is explained, a figurative lightbulb pops up over day's helm as he goes oooooooh in understanding now. ]
Is it a good movie from your Earth? It must be if you want to quote it.
[ he then plays the melody again, keeping an audial out for jo's reply. he also makes a point to stretch out the notes so she can pick them up and differentiate the pitches and tones weaved into the sentence. ]
no subject
I wish I could show you. You really haven't heard of Casablanca? [The thought is fascinating.
Though she is going to try to get back on track. She lifts the ocarina to her lips, taking a deep breath before she begins. Jo has never minded showing off things after she gets them down, but practicing with someone is harder.
She finishes about a minute later and waits for anything Day might have to say.]
ii;
[It's not displeased. More surprised than anything, as she glances up at him.]
Yes. But not out here. Come back to-- hm. The Invincible, I think. I might as well enjoy some wine while I read.
[And stay warm! That also is a factor.]
Is your point to give this information to others in the coming months as they arrive? Or to analyze it?
no subject
I- Er- I guess it'll be the former rather than the latter. [ he puts away his tablet, willing to follow madam lutece to the invincible when it's time to get moving. he keeps forgetting that not all beings have internal forges...! ] I want to compile the information and share it with the others, so they can catch up with what's going on. [ and, most of all, come to their own conclusions when some things are still up in the air.
he's not going to attempt to analyze or interpret the data when there's, admittedly, still a lot of things they need to figure out. better to, er, errr on the side of caution. ] Was thinking of, um, stapling the minutes onto the logbook too. So there's a literal paper trail for this.
no subject
An excellent idea. If nothing else, it will stop so many questions each ferry trip.
[God, but it's odd to walk next to him. He's so tall, and yes, he's adjusting his step for her, but still. It's hard not to be very aware of it.]
Are you always this helpful to others?
no subject
day's winglets flick up in excitement at the question, nodding his helm. but then he stops, looking thoughtful as he considers something. ]
Well... I hope I'm helpful to others. [ he thinks that's the best answer he can give. ] I really want to do what I can to give a hand with whatever is happening now and then.
Especially with how much ground we're making! New places, new faces, new things- I feel like there's real momentum now.
no subject
[It's not a critique. It's not a compliment, either. Just an observation, neutral and even, as she pushes open the Invincible's door and relaxes in the flood of warmth.]
Even now. That's unusual. Or, well: unusual enough for humans, anyway. I suppose it may be utterly typical for you and yours.
