EVENT LOG: PLEADER

EVENT LOG:
PLEADER
characters: everyone.
location: the floating night market, docked at the harbor.
date/time: december 12-16.
content: the night market arrives.
warnings: n/a.
yo voy a volver tu vas a ver.
In the wee hours of December 12, the lights return, appearing just under the waves in the harbor, approaching the dock, until the lights surface entirely. They're submarines, glowing a dim blue now that they're up out of the water, and the fleet is three vessels strong. They've brought with them a floating bridge system to attach to the harbor's main dock to allow access to all three submarines, and they start to unpack...
By "morning", under the light of the full moon, the Night Market is open for business!
This time, it's three vendors that arrive: Aaravos, an expert in all things magical; Michelle Cheung, master of papercraft; and Pluto, the Night Market's leader, who rolls out of her submarine in a custom-built wheelchair. They've brought a handful of helpers with them to set up the market and run the various booths and games. Though they have no torches among them, the docks are lit with the blue glow of the submarines, their lights rippling slowly in intricate patterns and shapes, reminiscent of carnival lights.•••
Accepted currencies at the Night Market include: Building and scrap materials, old tablets, old lanterns, captured forest spirits, torches, information, and most importantly... Plutonium. Of course, attempting to barter is always an option... but these currencies are your best bet for dealing with the various vendors offered by the Night Market.
Here are the vendors and their inventories for the current Night Market visit:PLUTO
- Special orders - Pluto can procure items just like Rastus, but she can get you specific goods from homeworlds. The more specific the request, the more it will cost. Items ordered through Pluto will arrive on the next ferry.
- Heals - A borrowed gun-looking device allows Pluto to heal even the most grievous of injuries. This item doesn't belong to her, though, so... results may vary. If you want proper healing, you'll have to wait until the Night Market's medical unit shows up in the future.
- GPS coordinates - Looking to discover more locations and resources out in the forest? Pluto can hook you up with hints to do just that.
- Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Pluto for more information.
AARAVOS
- Drugs - You want it? He's probably got it! Cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, and pretty much whatever else you can dream up is worth inquiring about.
- Magic potions - These potions last for no more than 24 hours unless otherwise noted. The following potions are currently on display, with these labels attached: Hair change, genderswap, body swap, love potion, luck potion, night vision, weather in a bottle, fake an injury, invisibility potion, furry shit, daemon shit. What does all of this crap do, exactly? You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.
- Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Disguise, Energy Boost, Charmer. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.
MICHELLE
- Handcrafted paper contraptions - Michelle can craft nearly anything out of paper, and don't let the lightness fool you—she can make her paper sharp and solid as steel. As long as you keep it out of the water (or do something to protect it from water damage yourself), your one-of-a-kind paper contraption is built to last! (She'll accept the typical Night Market currencies, as well as payment in the form of books. Any book will do! She'll even provide something to help you if you chose to go on a mission to steal a book for her from the library. These library stealth missions can be handwaved while making purchases from Michelle; just let us know in the form below if you'd like to pursue this.)
DR. SCHICKSAL'S HINT-O-MATIC
- AMA - Does your character have any burning questions they just need to have answered? Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic is a phonebooth-looking device with a screen prompting the user to input a question. When a question is asked, Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic will spout out an answer! Questions can be typed in via keypad or spoken aloud, and answers will be automatically read aloud for characters that can't read the screen. These answers are always true, no matter what the question, but this information comes at a cost—your character will be blessed with a random status effect for the remainder of the month. We will check permissions posts before issuing a status effect, so there's your hint for what to expect. 😃 And, yes, you can literally ask anything.
•••
Other than the vendors, the Night Market has brought with them the following attractions:
- COFFEE CART - The coffee cart offers every variety of hot drink a person could fathom, and it's complimentary! A few small tables have been set up in front of the cart around an outdoor heater, glowing happily as it warms this little section of dock.
- CANDY SHOP - Sweet treats offered at the candy shop are also free for the taking, but be careful—some treats carry with them a random status effect that will last for the next hour. The treats and resulting status effects are left entirely up to you players, so feel free to create your own hijinx! This is us trusting you not to break the game, so don't abuse this privilege, and feel free to ask us if you're unsure about limitations! Not all treats will produce an effect, but those that do will have no tells, meaning characters will not be able to strategize when eating the candy. (In meta terms: if you want your character to engage in wacky bullshit, but they're a party pooper and hate fun and wouldn't willingly indulge, this is your opportunity to trick them into shenanigans.)
- CARNIVAL GAMES - The small section of carnival games includes ring toss, skeeball, balloon darts, a shooting gallery, a fishing game, a plinko game, and an RC racing game with toy vehicles. The rules are all somewhat nebulous, but feel free to play out your characters interacting with these games on your own! They're all free to play, and prizes include knitted forest spirit plushies, wind-up goldfish that float through the air, and buckets of those plastic spider rings and finger topper guys that cost like one ticket apiece at Swings-N-Things.
- WHACKY WAVING INFLATABLE ARM FLAILING TUBE MEN - They are also here, and they have a jukebox with them with an unfathomably large selection of songs. This area of the dock is probably meant for dancing.
•••
Finally, though you can trade with the various NPC vendors in this log, check out the new Night Market Purchases page for fast-tracked transactions.

...what in the hell is that?
[something he finds himself saying more than once: at the carnival games, the potions, the healing gun, and most definitely at the wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tube guys. Also choose to hear him say it derisively at the prize you just won or the charm you just bought.]
B
It could be worse.
[mainly said while cozying up to the heater with a hot cup of tea cradled in his hands. Now this is tea. Good, solid, homebrew tea. Mmm. Look, he's still trying to find good quality warm clothing, he's going to take every moment he can get. Maybe someone should poke him and ask him why he's not getting clothes from Pluto. One thing's for sure, he's not talking directly to the vendors, only to his fellow townspeople. Come up and show him something cool, you might get 'it could be worse' instead of a scoff!]

OTA
The Soldier keeps odd hours, given they sleep twice a day for only about three or four hours at a time. (It works for them, okay. It makes them feel marginally less vulnerable and also lessens the likelihood of nightmares a little bit.) So they're on patrol when the submarines show up, and they get to watch with intent fascination as the little fair and market stalls slowly form up.
They're standing at the edge of the actual permanent dock, and now and then make an attempt ask one or another of the merchants, "Can I help? I can carry that for you."
II. Games for the win
Carnival games are really not meant for people with enhanced reflexes, intensive sniper training, and a whole hell of a lot of patience. The Soldier breezes through the ring toss, skeeball, darts, and shooting gallery games with next to no effort. It's almost not even fun-- almost not even fun. Because winning is still kind of fun, even if they have no real use for any of the prizes. Playing with those weird alien things on their fingers makes it a tiny bit more of a challenge, too, but only a tiny bit.
They ask whoever happens to be walking by, "Want a prize?" Each child in their acquaintance absolutely gets one (or two, or three) of the stuffed forest spirits.
III. A few of their favorite things
The Soldier is trying every single kind of coffee at this little stand. Every. Single. One. And while they happily sip, they hover next to the jukebox by the dance floor with their tablet in their metal hand (for steadiness), recording every song they can, even the ones that wind up with random snippets of conversation from people around them, or the sounds of people dancing.
It makes their brain buzz a little, all this music. (And no, it's probably not the caffeine.) It's buzzing in a good way, like there's something dancing around in the back corners, like a memory that maybe isn't horrible for once but isn't quite ready to show itself. It gets worse (better?) the older the music is, like maybe they've heard something like that before.
Someone try to drag the Soldier out on the floor. We dare you.
III - Demons dance, you know that

This is great. All the sweets he can eat, and actual fucking Raksuran tea. Stone lingers a lot by the candy cart, even after he learns (by self-discovery) that the candy does weird-ass shit. Doesn't stop him from trying to taste every kind, even if it turns his speech into visible word bubbles over his head, turns his eyes green, and gives him the hiccups.
Stone has never had hiccups before. That's the weirdest one.
Come chat with him to find out what strange thing happens from the candy, this time, or for him to press tea from his homeworld on you. Try it, it's good! Kind of sharp and musty at the same time, but still recognizably tea.
II. Carnival games are weird
The games baffle Stone, though he dutifully tries each one. "These guns are terrible, they're impossible to aim," he complains at the shooting gallery. "Can't we just walk up and drop the rings over?" he asks at the ring toss, possibly because he is very bad at it. "I could pop that a lot more effectively with my teeth," he grumps at the balloon popping game, though when he tries he finds out he's actually pretty good at that one-- as long as he stands far enough back to actually see where he's tossing the dart at. "We're supposed to use a pole? Why can't we just use our hands? That's the smarter way to fish," he comments at the fishing pool.
If Matt and Eliot hear that last comment, feel free to wince.

javert | ota
( Javert doesn't linger long at the market. He has no need for potions, spells, or any other such nonsense, and he doesn't care for the crowd. When he does appear, he lingers somewhere along the outskirts, throwing suspicious glances at the vendors and the attractions that they've brought with them.
Sometimes, he can be seen with a paper cup, filled to the brim with plain, black coffee, and that seems to lighten his mood somewhat. He's a man set in his ways. He's not interested in trying anything new, whether that be dancing or eating something from the candy shop. If anyone tries to offer, Javert only scoffs and says, )
Can't you pester someone else?
( Perhaps he will decline a little more nicely, if the question is asked by someone he actually likes, but the sentiment remains the same. )
carnival
( The carnival games hold no interest for him, save for one. It's been half a year since he last held a gun, and even longer since he fired one. He fears his marksmanship may be getting rusty, and that is what draws him to the shooting gallery. It may not be the same as the real thing, but given that Javert's hand is still healing, perhaps it is the only safe way for him practice. Challenge him, if you wish. Javert, himself, is a decent marksman, though not as good as some.
The prizes he has no use for. He hands them out to people that he knows, or people that he doesn't know, and who just so happen to be passing by. He's awkward about it, and he seems almost angry at himself because of it. He's not trying to be kind, don't take it the wrong way! )

vanitas | ota
[ Vanitas wants to know, and he makes it as far as the crest of the hill. The festival is alluring, all glittering lantern lights and the shimmer of those submarines. Everything about it screams Disney Town, the sounds that float up, the smell of the food and the candy, the low murmur of conversation, the constant drone of music from a place Vanitas can't quite pinpoint from all the way up here.
It fills him with unfathomable envy— a jealousy that runs deep, that festers and rolls and boils over into the shape of Unversed that look like they could be rats, if they didn't also look like raccoons. He's furious about this limitation— this utter horror that he just can't shake.
The weather is cold underneath the barren full moon, the way it reflects like a knife's edge in the black, black water below, but Vanitas still sweats. He can feel it on the back of his neck, making his palms clammy. He's never been afraid like this before. He went out onto the water with Sora before and hadn't even thought twice about it. He remembers telling Robin, before the horrible truth came to light, that he would go back out there and solve the mystery of the figure they had seen.
And now he can't bring himself to walk down the hill toward the sound of the surf. Just looking at it this close makes his body go hot and cold all at once. Makes him nauseous— and it circles around within him. The fear itself, his anger over the fact he can' t control it, the violent jealousy of being left out when here, of all places, he should have been able to have this thing— this thing that he knows Ventus got to have and he didn't.
Should anyone pass near him, he'll shoot them an extremely ugly look with a: ]
What are you looking at?
[ Or alternately: ]
Off to have fun down at that stupid festival?
[ Later, he'll be sitting on the hill with his knees up and his arms around his shins, glaring down at the festival but keeping his silence unless approached or spoken to first. ]
and in happy agony we sing,
[ Down in the festival proper, where Vanitas can't go— his Unversed can. They weave in and out of the stalls, and between the legs of the people trying to barter and hock their wares.
You probably thought that thing you just traded for was safe now that it was in your clutches, didn't you? Or maybe that candy that you snagged from the candy shop?
Think again— to anyone even remotely unsuspecting, an Unversed will pop up and try to snatch that object from a character's hand. If it doesn't succeed, a minor game of tug-o-war will ensue as it tries to pry the thing away. If it does, it will immediately turn tail and start running from the festival and back toward the beach, back up the hill— where, if it's followed, it will beeline right back to Vanitas who has not left his post. ]

OTA
[It should surprise absolutely no one to find Will sulking around near the coffee cart. If he drinks dozens of cups a day of the swill the Invincible offers, then of course he'd be first in line when something better shows up.
It's free, it's actually good, and it doesn't do anything to him aside from help keep him awake. He knows he shouldn't trust it, but he also knows that positive things are so few and far between here that he needs to take full advantage while he can. Still, there's something distinctly fishy (no pun intended?) about these "Night Market" people, and like most of his emotions, Will's misgivings are written clearly in his expression.
Come gossip and complain with him, or join him in trying as many different coffee drinks as possible. Or you could try to convince him to eat some of that weird candy or something. Good luck with that one.]
Elsewhere - Dec. 14-16
[By now he's figured out that the Night Market isn't poisoning their drinks and that they aren't secretly spirits in disguise. Probably. He certainly doesn't trust them, but they've definitely got a good thing going here. He's started to indulge in some, er, other vices, outside of the coffee. Alcohol for sure, but it's possible he's on something else at the same time.
Whatever he's drinking or taking, its effects are notable. His normally rigid posture is a lot more relaxed, and he seems generally less uptight and irritable. You might even catch a smile or two. It's unsettling.
Even more eerie is when he stumbles into you near the edge of the pier and doesn't immediately cause a scene.]
Watch yourself. [For perhaps the first time since new people started arriving in Beacon, there's no malice in his voice.] You trying to put us both in the damn lake?
[The second half of his sentence drops from his usual sharp accent into something low and blunt, the verbal equivalent of throwing a heavy sack of flour at a wall.]

ambrose spellman ( chilling adventures of sabrina )
( this, ambrose thinks, is a lot better than dealing with little creatures attacking them from the woods. )
I cannot remember the last time I had a good coffee.
( and this was good coffee. he'd bee subsisting on water and booze since coming here but a jolt of caffeine was just what he needed. he might be here awhile. )
▶ 02. CARNIVAL
( he'd gone into the woods to get some lumber and he'd been hauling it back when he caught sight of the carnival. he's not about to let go of his currency but he can't bypass a carnival so he drags it along with him like a pet and stops at the first game he comes to. )
Balloon darts, huh? Do I get a big prize if I win?
( the vendor nods and ambrose smirks, picking up the darts and tossing them. if he uses a little magic to make sure he wins, is that really so wrong? he wants that big teddy bear and then he wants to find someone to carry his winnings for him. )
Now taking applications for big strong men or women to help me out? I pay well.
( he grins. )

Armitage Hux | Star Wars
[He had never had such delicious coffee before. It was rich, strong, and actually had some flavor to it. The First Order didn't exactly have such luxuries and he had to spend limited resources on other, more practical things. He could feel himself wake up a bit more, some more energy. It was better than a stim shot.
Come join him shotgunning all different cups of coffee or judge him how many shots of espresso he can drink in one go without his heart exploding at the sheer amount of caffeine.]
All the food and general festival fun
What is this?
[He held up a big of gummy bears but the vender had already moved away leaving him with the candy. Candy wasn't exactly something that was First Order approved- it would be a frivolous expense without any practical purpose.
The display of candy was strange to him, he couldn't imagine how anyone would even eat some of the things such as the large lollipops which seemed to be composed of a hard surface that could crack teeth.
He wasn't interested in the games, especially since at one point he's walking around with two bottles of whiskey which he considered rather valuable after what it had taken to get it.]

Crowley | OTA
Crowley, for one, has a lot to say about this market. He thinks this is ridiculous, he thinks it's a huge waste of their time, and he thinks it's all going to get them in trouble, in the end.
But, hell, they've got candy, and he needs some of that for one of his plans this month, so he's not going to complain that loudly. So have Crowley with a bag full of candy, sucking on his own lollipop.
"Anyone care to explain to me why this place decided to show up now?"
2. Carnival Games
"No, you see, you nail the cans down before they start shooting at them. It makes it---oh, come on you're in the carnival. You should know how this works."
He's definitely not trying to corrupt the vendors. Absolutely not trying any of the games on his own. After a few unsuccessful temptation attempts, he's going to sigh and stick to wandering around. He'll stop in front of the plinko, wondering if he can miracle himself a win without trying.

Klaes Ashford | OTA
[Ashford is, at least for a moment, standing with a mug of coffee in hand looking uncertain. He wavers around the edge of the coffee table until he seemingly discovers what he is looking for, in the process possibly reaching around you in a less than polite manner you to get to want he wants.
Alcohol.]
Ah ha! This the one.
[He taps a knuckle against a bottle of whiskey before lifting it to add a hefty pour to his coffee.]
Much better.
Candy Shop
[Few candies ever make it to the outer edges of the asteroid belt, not being worth the fuel it would take to get them there when water would be 100 times more valuable. As such Ashford has had very little exposure to them. Although that's not really something he's ever lamented. He's not really the 'sweet tooth' kind of guy.
But given they are here, he figures why not? It's for the taking.
Except he might not view it so ambivalently when he finds that innocent looking sour ball has eliminated his ability to cuss.]
Carnival Games
One on one, ah? How about it?
[Ashford nudges you with one boney elbow before raising one of the guns at the shooting range.]
Best four outta five.

Ignis Scientia - OTA
Is this what people consider paradise? Because it is coming close to it. A fake paradise, considering the place they are stuck in, but still- it's good. A really good cup of coffee that actually shakes him fully awake. It doesn't even compare to the brew he makes. It's probably because of the low quality of the coffee itself. Perhaps he shouldn't have had three cups in the row. But the taste reminds him so much of Ebony that he couldn't stop himself.
"It's an amazing blend," Ignis says to the person that comes up and debates whether to get a drink or no, while sitting at the nearby table, legs crossed and mug in front of him. "Way better than the coffee we can brew or get at Invincible."
Candy Cart
Chocolate truffles, caramel toffees, peanut butter cookies... are those Oreos? Ignis isn't eating from everything, he's not a glutton, but he is picking at items, one from each, for taste testing. While he was initially suspicious of consequences similar to the previous month, he noted that no one actually fainted from eating these.
"I wonder if there is a bag of chocolate chips. It would be great to make proper cookies," he says, mostly to himself. He wonders what Noct would like from all of this. Hm, maybe everything. So- it's a good decision to take a piece from everything, right? Right.
The Games
"You ought to steady your hand if you wish to catch anything," Ignis supplies, watching the person try to fish. Noct would complain about backseat fishing, but that's actually how he knows how to fish. Countless hours spent by the lake, fish after fish and their dinner would be secure for the night. It's too bad that there aren't actual fishes to catch like this.
When the fish fails to catch onto the hook, Ignis rubs his chin, "I wonder if they could rig simple fishing game..."

Duster | OTA
[This isn't a very common drink on the Nowhere Islands, so this does make the visit feel special, at least. Duster stands behind the heater, preferring to people-watch while warming up. He's very good at standing still.
Maybe you don't even notice that those shadows hide a person until he moves his cup to his face.]
Carnival
Just hit those targets?
[The attendant confirms: yes, just shoot those painted animals with that gun and you win.]
Right. [He looks over the toy gun in his hands - he's seen the Pigmasks use them, so it seems simple enough?
He holds it in both hands, clearly never having held such a weapon, fires, and misses.]

Kuai Liang || OTA
Coffee CartTea Truck[Kuai's personal stash of tea that he acquired from Rastus has been starting to dwindle even for as much as he'd been rationing it. A man simply cannot go without tea for that long. So when the little cart shows up and sells things other than bean water he is positively delighted.
Which is obvious by the way he's standing there quietly and sipping his cup. Life of the party this one is.]
Carnival Games
[While he's not actively playing any of them, he obviously has been because he has one of the little fish that he winds up and sets on the palm of his hand, watching it fly around in a few circles before letting it fall back onto his hand when it runs out of whatever is powering it.]
What an odd sorcery. And seemingly pointless.
[Though maybe not, considering Kuai keeps winding it up again. Obviously just to see how it works and for no other reason.]

OTA
Rook is good with his hands. He doesn't have any formal training as a mechanic or with repairs, just what he's picked up here and there and made work because he had no other options. When he hears that building materials and scrap are useful at the market, he snaps to as he always does at the slightest sign that he can be useful. There are plenty of odds and ends lying around and, logically, they'd be better barter in better shape. He spends many contented hours bending wires and hinges back into place, clearing away the worst of rust and tarnish, sorting out the salvageable from the purely recyclable.
Since he doesn't actually know very many people at more than a nodding acquaintance, he ends up leaving most of his creations near the bonfire, free for the taking. It's the most central point he can think of that's not just the market. He turns up to drop off newly tidied and oiled supplies every so often.
II: To Market To Market
He doesn't really want much of anything. He's no good with weapons and tools seem to already be in reasonable supply. He's got no interest in the more esoteric goods, certainly. Magic is bad enough at its current levels.
But just being in the market is nice. It feels like a bit of real life, while everything else about this place usually functions more like a frustrating dream that won't end. Even without participating much, he feels better just for being here, soaking up the impersonal white noise and busy rushing back and forth, occasionally watching games and bartering while he hangs back and watches.
Always with tea in his hand. Okay, he has one material wish he's willing to indulge.

[ With a hot cocoa in one hand and a lollipop in the other, Aziraphale is looking over the various other types of sweets on display at the candy stall, stars in his eyes as a child might have. ]
Ah, is the candyfloss different flavors? Or just colors?
II. LET'S PLAY A GAME
[ He's kind of disappointed there's no game for seeing who can pound a hammer the hardest, but at the same time, ring toss isn't a bad one. He's got a handful of tickets already, and another stack of rings at his side. ]
Do you fancy a go? I think I've got enough here to buy one of those goldfish!

Jo Harvelle | OTA
[After watching others for a moment or two with their drinks, Jo steps forward and gets herself a black coffee with sugar. She's tempted to take it to go for a moment, deciding to sit and watch the crowd enjoy the special occasion.
She will wave or call out to anyone she recognizes. Seems safe so far.]
Carnival games
[This is where Jo always spent her time at fairs back home. If one watches long enough, the tricks can be beat. She's never had trouble winning things. It's just a matter of adapting. Hey, if they don't play fair, she won't either.
These games seem to be fair enough. Jo drifts back and forth between ring toss, the dart game and the shooting gallery. These are all exactly her skillset.
Being in Beacon has her shooting much less than she's used to, and the difficulty of getting ammunition makes her reluctant to waste it practicing.
At some point she'll be handing out her prizes to whoever walks by.]
Here, take this.
The dancing men
[While dancing isn't her thing, at least not in this situation, music definitely is. She's sticking close to the jukebox, watching the tubemen out of the corner of her eye while she investigates the machine.
This might be the best place to catch her by surprise.]
