In the wee hours of December 12, the lights return, appearing just under the waves in the harbor, approaching the dock, until the lights surface entirely. They're submarines, glowing a dim blue now that they're up out of the water, and the fleet is three vessels strong. They've brought with them a floating bridge system to attach to the harbor's main dock to allow access to all three submarines, and they start to unpack...

By "morning", under the light of the full moon, the Night Market is open for business!

This time, it's three vendors that arrive: Aaravos, an expert in all things magical; Michelle Cheung, master of papercraft; and Pluto, the Night Market's leader, who rolls out of her submarine in a custom-built wheelchair. They've brought a handful of helpers with them to set up the market and run the various booths and games. Though they have no torches among them, the docks are lit with the blue glow of the submarines, their lights rippling slowly in intricate patterns and shapes, reminiscent of carnival lights.

Accepted currencies at the Night Market include: Building and scrap materials, old tablets, old lanterns, captured forest spirits, torches, information, and most importantly... Plutonium. Of course, attempting to barter is always an option... but these currencies are your best bet for dealing with the various vendors offered by the Night Market.

Here are the vendors and their inventories for the current Night Market visit:

PLUTO

• Special orders - Pluto can procure items just like Rastus, but she can get you specific goods from homeworlds. The more specific the request, the more it will cost. Items ordered through Pluto will arrive on the next ferry.


• Heals - A borrowed gun-looking device allows Pluto to heal even the most grievous of injuries. This item doesn't belong to her, though, so... results may vary. If you want proper healing, you'll have to wait until the Night Market's medical unit shows up in the future.


• GPS coordinates - Looking to discover more locations and resources out in the forest? Pluto can hook you up with hints to do just that.


• Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Pluto for more information.

AARAVOS

• Drugs - You want it? He's probably got it! Cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, and pretty much whatever else you can dream up is worth inquiring about.


• Magic potions - These potions last for no more than 24 hours unless otherwise noted. The following potions are currently on display, with these labels attached: Hair change, genderswap, body swap, love potion, luck potion, night vision, weather in a bottle, fake an injury, invisibility potion, furry shit, daemon shit. What does all of this crap do, exactly? You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.


• Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Disguise, Energy Boost, Charmer. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.

MICHELLE

• Handcrafted paper contraptions - Michelle can craft nearly anything out of paper, and don't let the lightness fool you—she can make her paper sharp and solid as steel. As long as you keep it out of the water (or do something to protect it from water damage yourself), your one-of-a-kind paper contraption is built to last! (She'll accept the typical Night Market currencies, as well as payment in the form of books. Any book will do! She'll even provide something to help you if you chose to go on a mission to steal a book for her from the library. These library stealth missions can be handwaved while making purchases from Michelle; just let us know in the form below if you'd like to pursue this.)

DR. SCHICKSAL'S HINT-O-MATIC

• AMA - Does your character have any burning questions they just need to have answered? Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic is a phonebooth-looking device with a screen prompting the user to input a question. When a question is asked, Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic will spout out an answer! Questions can be typed in via keypad or spoken aloud, and answers will be automatically read aloud for characters that can't read the screen. These answers are always true, no matter what the question, but this information comes at a cost—your character will be blessed with a random status effect for the remainder of the month. We will check permissions posts before issuing a status effect, so there's your hint for what to expect. 😃 And, yes, you can literally ask anything.

Other than the vendors, the Night Market has brought with them the following attractions:

• COFFEE CART - The coffee cart offers every variety of hot drink a person could fathom, and it's complimentary! A few small tables have been set up in front of the cart around an outdoor heater, glowing happily as it warms this little section of dock.


• CANDY SHOP - Sweet treats offered at the candy shop are also free for the taking, but be careful—some treats carry with them a random status effect that will last for the next hour. The treats and resulting status effects are left entirely up to you players, so feel free to create your own hijinx! This is us trusting you not to break the game, so don't abuse this privilege, and feel free to ask us if you're unsure about limitations! Not all treats will produce an effect, but those that do will have no tells, meaning characters will not be able to strategize when eating the candy. (In meta terms: if you want your character to engage in wacky bullshit, but they're a party pooper and hate fun and wouldn't willingly indulge, this is your opportunity to trick them into shenanigans.)


• CARNIVAL GAMES - The small section of carnival games includes ring toss, skeeball, balloon darts, a shooting gallery, a fishing game, a plinko game, and an RC racing game with toy vehicles. The rules are all somewhat nebulous, but feel free to play out your characters interacting with these games on your own! They're all free to play, and prizes include knitted forest spirit plushies, wind-up goldfish that float through the air, and buckets of those plastic spider rings and finger topper guys that cost like one ticket apiece at Swings-N-Things.


• WHACKY WAVING INFLATABLE ARM FLAILING TUBE MEN - They are also here, and they have a jukebox with them with an unfathomably large selection of songs. This area of the dock is probably meant for dancing.

Coffee Cart Tea Truck
[Kuai's personal stash of tea that he acquired from Rastus has been starting to dwindle even for as much as he'd been rationing it. A man simply cannot go without tea for that long. So when the little cart shows up and sells things other than bean water he is positively delighted.

Which is obvious by the way he's standing there quietly and sipping his cup. Life of the party this one is.]

Carnival Games
[While he's not actively playing any of them, he obviously has been because he has one of the little fish that he winds up and sets on the palm of his hand, watching it fly around in a few circles before letting it fall back onto his hand when it runs out of whatever is powering it.]

What an odd sorcery. And seemingly pointless.

[Though maybe not, considering Kuai keeps winding it up again. Obviously just to see how it works and for no other reason.]

What a night, huh? [She asks, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. She may have swooped from the skies and landed nearby because that's a quicker way to travel.

She checks out the coffee/tea cart and looks indecisive on what to take. She decides on wildberry tea and stands next to him, drinking slowly and just watching other people like a hawk.

I'm waiting for whatever horrible thing is to come. I've been here too long to trust this is altruistic.

[Listen, sometimes you just gotta chill. She likes brawling, but she's been brawling for two weeks. Even she loves to take a break when it's too much.]

Like a calm before the storm. [Sip.] Also their timing is impeccable. [She means the vendors.]

I suppose the wise thing to do would be enjoy it while it lasts. Even if it is the precursor to something worse.

If nothing else the drinks are appreciated.

[He's trying to convince himself here.]

They are. And they are not making us pass out, magically.

[Whether it's convincing or no, they really have to get their bearings together otherwise they'll be all done for.]

Did you go to the Town Hall meeting?

[She snooped around, but she didn't really spot Kuai among the people. Maybe she missed him.]

I was there for a while. I hope it's more effective than the last. The previous one was full of grand ideas and good plans, and nearly none of them were implemented. Maybe now that we have more people, it will be different.

[Some of his optimism has returned. It's wonderful what a good drink will do.]

Do not say that. We may all still pass out later.

[She doesn't remember if she visited the first meeting, so it might not be as good as this one. A lot of shit was said and it was pretty hard to believe it, mostly because the people dreamt about it. It would be better if she had some kind of concrete proof.]

Yeah, more people for spirits to gnaw on, [she mutters with a sigh.] They seriously need to clean up their act or people will start revolting. Me first.

[She looks at her mug,] I mean, I won't mind. I need a nap.

Hopefully more people to prevent the spirits from gnawing on us. But I see your point. I don't think an offensive attack against things that live in complete darkness is wise, they have the advantage there.

Everyone's been trying to do something and help them, and what did we get? A massacre. [She huffs, shifting her weight from leg to leg.]

Any idea how to handle those hallucinations? Those green-eyed spirits.

I think the forest spirits are divided, those who want to help and those who do not. Lumping them all together may make enemies of allies.

No, I wish I did. I've not seen anyone say they have a viable solution against whatever sorcery they're using to cause us to hallucinate. There might not be anything we can do.

Tea Truck pls!

[Ashford is not all that familiar with tea. Of course he's aware of it. Although rarer than coffee, it's certainly come through the Belt now and again. It's just never struck his interest. Never seemed like it would be strong enough for a man who tends to prefer the kind of drinks that could permanently damage a man's throat and stomach.

He eyes Kuai sipping his tea in a quasi-meditation and raises a bottle of whisky in his direction]

Need a pick up for that stuff?

[He should be offended by tainting perfectly good tea with whisky, but he recognizes the gesture as being a well meaning one, so he does little more than frown.]

No, thank you. I prefer it the way it is.

[He nods towards the truck.]

Coffee may be more well suited to additional diversions.

[Mess with the soggy bean water all you want, but leave his leafs alone.]

[Klaes makes a 'suit yourself' expression and moves to pour the whiskey into a black as sludge cup of coffee. If this other man is content with leaf water that's his choice.]

I would argue most everything suitable for this.

[He makes a point of shaking the whiskey bottle for emphasis before he sets it back down where he got it.]

Considering the situation I won't argue that point. We could likely all use it.

[Alcohol certainly has its place, and right now when there seems to be some down time is the best occasion for it.]

Have you seen what the vendors have on offer? There's one with a vast selection compared to whats at the inn. What they wish to barter for their wares is .. odd however.

[Building supplies and forest spirits for alcohol? Very strange.]

[The Soldier has one of the fish, themselves, and it bumps in the air into Kuai's fish. The Soldier actually smiles a little at the sight, catching both on the flesh palm. The metal one is taken up with a new thing they have discovered: coffee + hot chocolate = mocha, which is heaven. Even if the Soldier really has no concept of heaven. It must be this, right?

They offer the mechanical fish back to Kuai.]

[He takes it back, turning it over in his fingers.]

It's a very simple thing, I wonder why anyone bothered to enchant it to do this. Unless it's powered by something I'm unfamiliar with. Given what I've seen here that's entirely possible.

[He should put it away, it's a child's toy afterall, but he continues to twist it around in his fingers, something about the simplicity of it appealing to him.]

Alcohol. Magic potions. Things made out of paper. I got a paper star from that one. She thought my origami lion was cute.

[They put their own mechanical fish away, for now, focusing on the lovely, lovely mocha, and on Kuai.]

And the one who says she can get things like Rastus, only better.

[Which is to say: yes, they've seen what the vendors are selling.]

I'm tempted to see if the one making things out of paper can make a lantern for my room. It is starting to be rather depressing to go to an empty room, the only thing that makes it mine is that I have said that it is. I do not keep anything there.

[Who knew having no personal belongings would get kind of dismal and depressing after a while.]

You can make origami lions?

Yes. And cranes. And frogs. Misty started teaching me back when we were making the paper lanterns for the dead.

[Which makes them itch a little to find a piece a paper and show Kuai. It's a completely non-combat-related talent, but it's nice to have non-combat-related talents.]

I'm not as good as Miss Michelle, though. She uses magic for hers. I'm going to try and take the star apart to see if I can re-create it, but I'm not hopeful.

That's quite impressive. Grandmaster Hasashi made this one for me.

[From within his tunic he pulls out a small origami frog, a little flattened from being carried around in his pocket. He squishes it to poof it up and then kneels down, setting it on the ground and pushing on the back of it. The little paper frog hops forward.]

But I still don't fully understand how it works.

[The Soldier crouches to watch, enchanted by the idea of a hopping paper frog.]

I don't know if mine can do that. I didn't think to try. But I can see how it works. When it pops back up from being pushed down, the momentum lifts it off the ground and makes it hop. Like a spring.

[He makes it hop once more before picking it back up, carefully dusting it off so it doesn't gather any debris from the ground, and tucks it back into his tunic.]

I wonder if they all have tricks. I know nothing of origami, all I can fold out of paper are little boats and lanterns and that is hardly skillful.

It's not hard to learn. Or it wasn't, for me. And I'd never made anything at all before.

[Surely for an actual person it wouldn't be hard, either. And Kuai is skilled, too. He could probably pick it up.]

I never had much time to learn anything but fighting.
