In the wee hours of December 12, the lights return, appearing just under the waves in the harbor, approaching the dock, until the lights surface entirely. They're submarines, glowing a dim blue now that they're up out of the water, and the fleet is three vessels strong. They've brought with them a floating bridge system to attach to the harbor's main dock to allow access to all three submarines, and they start to unpack...

By "morning", under the light of the full moon, the Night Market is open for business!

This time, it's three vendors that arrive: Aaravos, an expert in all things magical; Michelle Cheung, master of papercraft; and Pluto, the Night Market's leader, who rolls out of her submarine in a custom-built wheelchair. They've brought a handful of helpers with them to set up the market and run the various booths and games. Though they have no torches among them, the docks are lit with the blue glow of the submarines, their lights rippling slowly in intricate patterns and shapes, reminiscent of carnival lights.

Accepted currencies at the Night Market include: Building and scrap materials, old tablets, old lanterns, captured forest spirits, torches, information, and most importantly... Plutonium. Of course, attempting to barter is always an option... but these currencies are your best bet for dealing with the various vendors offered by the Night Market.

Here are the vendors and their inventories for the current Night Market visit:

PLUTO

• Special orders - Pluto can procure items just like Rastus, but she can get you specific goods from homeworlds. The more specific the request, the more it will cost. Items ordered through Pluto will arrive on the next ferry.


• Heals - A borrowed gun-looking device allows Pluto to heal even the most grievous of injuries. This item doesn't belong to her, though, so... results may vary. If you want proper healing, you'll have to wait until the Night Market's medical unit shows up in the future.


• GPS coordinates - Looking to discover more locations and resources out in the forest? Pluto can hook you up with hints to do just that.


• Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Pluto for more information.

AARAVOS

• Drugs - You want it? He's probably got it! Cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, and pretty much whatever else you can dream up is worth inquiring about.


• Magic potions - These potions last for no more than 24 hours unless otherwise noted. The following potions are currently on display, with these labels attached: Hair change, genderswap, body swap, love potion, luck potion, night vision, weather in a bottle, fake an injury, invisibility potion, furry shit, daemon shit. What does all of this crap do, exactly? You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.


• Lantern charms - These charms can be attached to your lantern to provide BENEFITS as well as DRAWBACKS. The following charms are currently on display, with these labels attached: Disguise, Energy Boost, Charmer. You'll be given instructions for use at the time of purchase, or you can try asking Aaravos for more information.

MICHELLE

• Handcrafted paper contraptions - Michelle can craft nearly anything out of paper, and don't let the lightness fool you—she can make her paper sharp and solid as steel. As long as you keep it out of the water (or do something to protect it from water damage yourself), your one-of-a-kind paper contraption is built to last! (She'll accept the typical Night Market currencies, as well as payment in the form of books. Any book will do! She'll even provide something to help you if you chose to go on a mission to steal a book for her from the library. These library stealth missions can be handwaved while making purchases from Michelle; just let us know in the form below if you'd like to pursue this.)

DR. SCHICKSAL'S HINT-O-MATIC

• AMA - Does your character have any burning questions they just need to have answered? Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic is a phonebooth-looking device with a screen prompting the user to input a question. When a question is asked, Dr. Schicksal's Hint-O-Matic will spout out an answer! Questions can be typed in via keypad or spoken aloud, and answers will be automatically read aloud for characters that can't read the screen. These answers are always true, no matter what the question, but this information comes at a cost—your character will be blessed with a random status effect for the remainder of the month. We will check permissions posts before issuing a status effect, so there's your hint for what to expect. 😃 And, yes, you can literally ask anything.

Other than the vendors, the Night Market has brought with them the following attractions:

• COFFEE CART - The coffee cart offers every variety of hot drink a person could fathom, and it's complimentary! A few small tables have been set up in front of the cart around an outdoor heater, glowing happily as it warms this little section of dock.


• CANDY SHOP - Sweet treats offered at the candy shop are also free for the taking, but be careful—some treats carry with them a random status effect that will last for the next hour. The treats and resulting status effects are left entirely up to you players, so feel free to create your own hijinx! This is us trusting you not to break the game, so don't abuse this privilege, and feel free to ask us if you're unsure about limitations! Not all treats will produce an effect, but those that do will have no tells, meaning characters will not be able to strategize when eating the candy. (In meta terms: if you want your character to engage in wacky bullshit, but they're a party pooper and hate fun and wouldn't willingly indulge, this is your opportunity to trick them into shenanigans.)


• CARNIVAL GAMES - The small section of carnival games includes ring toss, skeeball, balloon darts, a shooting gallery, a fishing game, a plinko game, and an RC racing game with toy vehicles. The rules are all somewhat nebulous, but feel free to play out your characters interacting with these games on your own! They're all free to play, and prizes include knitted forest spirit plushies, wind-up goldfish that float through the air, and buckets of those plastic spider rings and finger topper guys that cost like one ticket apiece at Swings-N-Things.


• WHACKY WAVING INFLATABLE ARM FLAILING TUBE MEN - They are also here, and they have a jukebox with them with an unfathomably large selection of songs. This area of the dock is probably meant for dancing.

( Javert doesn't linger long at the market. He has no need for potions, spells, or any other such nonsense, and he doesn't care for the crowd. When he does appear, he lingers somewhere along the outskirts, throwing suspicious glances at the vendors and the attractions that they've brought with them.

Sometimes, he can be seen with a paper cup, filled to the brim with plain, black coffee, and that seems to lighten his mood somewhat. He's a man set in his ways. He's not interested in trying anything new, whether that be dancing or eating something from the candy shop. If anyone tries to offer, Javert only scoffs and says, )

Can't you pester someone else?

( Perhaps he will decline a little more nicely, if the question is asked by someone he actually likes, but the sentiment remains the same. )

( The carnival games hold no interest for him, save for one. It's been half a year since he last held a gun, and even longer since he fired one. He fears his marksmanship may be getting rusty, and that is what draws him to the shooting gallery. It may not be the same as the real thing, but given that Javert's hand is still healing, perhaps it is the only safe way for him practice. Challenge him, if you wish. Javert, himself, is a decent marksman, though not as good as some.

The prizes he has no use for. He hands them out to people that he knows, or people that he doesn't know, and who just so happen to be passing by. He's awkward about it, and he seems almost angry at himself because of it. He's not trying to be kind, don't take it the wrong way! )

[She isn't, honestly, a bad shot. Not a particularly good shot, she'll never win awards, but she can aim and hit a target, so well done her.

That said: the last time she shot something (someone, actually), she had two working eyes. So this is as much an exercise in adaptation as anything, although after two rounds, she thinks she has a hang of it. Which means it's time to be competitive, as she nods over at Javert.]

All right. Best out of three, hm?

( It doesn't seem a particularly fair challenge. She may be a decent shot, adapting swiftly to her lack of depth perception, but Javert is honorable to a fault, as she well knows. He hesitates for a moment before offering, )

Perhaps I shall spot you a game. ( And then, ) You do not mean to bet on this, do you?

( He's not much of a betting man, himself, but there's always a first for everything. )

Oh, yes.

[She regards him frankly. It's hard to summon amusement, even here, but she's always been competitive-- especially against those few she's fond of.]

A bottle of whiskey is what I wish for when I win. And you?

( A good question. There's isn't much that he desires, and those few desires that he has are not things that she or anyone else in Beacon can provide him. Perhaps something simple, then. )

For you to take a day off from work.

( Is he offering this because he's concerned about her overworking herself, or is he just being mean? Perhaps a bit of both. )

You ought to give me your best shot.

[She scoffs, giving him a flat look for that bet.]

There'd never be a moment where I wouldn't give you my best shot, Javert.

[But all right. She frowns faintly as she lines up the first shot, and give her this: she isn't bad at it. She's very rarely bad at things. But she is hindered by her lack of depth perception, and there's a marked upswing of improvement as she grows used to it.

Still: even at her peak, she isn't good enough to beat someone who knows how to use a gun. Not really. She's an academic, not a solider, but by god, she tries, because sometimes she's just competitive like that.]

[policier]

( If it were possible for him to like her anymore than he already does, he would, after seeing that flat look and her response. He may be going easy on her by spotting her a game, but he isn't going to hold himself back when they begin their challenge. The rifle itself may be a toy, and it may shoot a little differently than a real firearm would, but he's had practice, too. )

You aren't bad.

( He says, after one game. He's hit more than he's missed, and perhaps he's frustrated that he missed any at all. He's impressed with her attempt, though. )

[ Ellever has a handful of hard candies from the candy cart as she meanders through the carnival games, trying to decide whether she wants to try them or not. She's regarding one with red and grey stripes when a hand suddenly appears with a purple spider ring, and she brightens, accepting it before she glances to see where it came from.

At least she isn't accepting candy from strangers. (She did that earlier.) Just... spider rings. ]

Oh! Thanks. Having some luck?

[ Thanks to plenty of coffee, Ellever's got some pep back in her step, so to speak. Her smile is reasonably bright. ]

It is a simple enough game.

( He responds it stoically. Far be it for him to brag about his accomplishments, even ones that are as trivial as this. She smiles at him, and that only seems to make him more awkward. He's not used to other people being gracious to him, never mind being happy. )

I do not know how I would fare with the others.

( He's never been to a carnival before, so he's certainly a fish out of water, here. )

[ Something about the way he responds reminds her of Dewan, but in a pleasant way. He has a similar stoic manner. It's weird to her that she's already starting to think of her cousin in a positive sense, but maybe having him here wouldn't be so bad. He could just say the word and they could all go home.

Ellever continues smiling, shrugging her shoulders and putting on her brand new Spider Ring. She misses her crazy earring collection. This'll have to do. ]

I find the fishing game pretty tedious, honestly, but the skeeball's fun. [ She nods over at it. ] It's really rewarding when you get on a winning streak with it. Mostly it just requires an agile wrist, if you've got one.

[policier]

I should hope so.

( He may not be proficient in games, but he is dexterous with a sword. He throws a glance in the direction of what he assumes are the skee ball machines, and his disinterested expression does not cease. )

I do not believe I am in need of anymore prizes, however.

( Such a problem to have! Only he could find fault in such a thing. )

[antiwhat]

[ There's a slightly wry twist to her smile as she watches him take in the machines, her head tilting unconsciously to the side. ]

They're very generous with them. [ The prizes, that is. She'll let the skeeball thing go. Maybe it'll catch his attention later, maybe it won't. ] Or we're all just really good. Maybe both. Too bad we can't take the prizes and hock them at the stalls.

[ That'd just be cheating, and she knows it, but still. She wishes she had something to offer. All she has is her moth necklace, and she's not about to trade in her last connection to home unless she absolutely has to. ]

I'm Elle, by the way.

[ At this point, Elle has stopped extending her hand to people when she introduces herself. Almost no one takes it. ]

( Javert hardly notices the omission. Even after all time he's spent in Beacon, socializing himself and getting to know other people, he's still a bit skittish when it comes to touching. Though he is still quite formal, inclining his head as he introduces himself as, )

Javert.

( And then, out of nothing but curiosity, he asks, )

Is there something among their wares that interests you? Much of it is quite ridiculous.

[Akechi has mostly been stopping by for coffee and maybe a few sweets here and there, but he's been lingering at the shooting gallery for the same reason; sort of. With the way this place is, practicing aim was probably best to keep up on. What he didn't expect was to have a random forest spirit plush shoved his way like that.]

Uh.... I don't need it, but thanks for the offer.

[policier]

That is what I had said, though the proprietor insisted.

( It's fine. He'll keep it. Maybe it'll spruce up his apartment a bit, because God knows he doesn't do anything to try to decorate it and make it look not like a torture chamber. He takes the stuffed thing back and frowns at it. )

I do not know why they insist on giving out such useless items.

I suppose that is the point of these, but... I'm not really concerned about the prizes myself.

[So he would absolutely do what Javert did.]

[policier]

So are you here to play the games, then?

( Or perhaps he's here to look. That's what Javert had been doing before he got tempted into trying out the shooting gallery. )

I suppose a little bit, but I was mostly drawn to the shooting range to practice more than anything. It's been a while.

[policier]

So you are experienced in firearms, are you?

( Despite the other man's age, Javert doesn't seem the least bit judgmental. He's seen children younger than him take up a musket, and there's always going to be a part of him that is interested in other people's skill. )

I was drawn to it for much the same reason.

[ He may not be trying to be nice, but she sure takes it as that when he abruptly gives her a floating wind-up goldfish. ]

Oh thank you.

[ She says quietly, awe suffusing her tone as she winds it up and watches it go. Seriously, this is so freaking cool!!! ]

( Lord, is that what it does? His mouth curls into a slight frown as he watches it go, swishing its tail back and forth just as a real goldfish would. How absurd. )

Is there nothing in this thrice damned place that makes sense?

( How it is floating? And why would a fish swim through the air when it has gills and can't even breathe? Javert huffs softly and says, )

You may surely keep it, then. I have no need for such a thing.

[ She feels the frown grace his lips in the back of her mind, even as she moves to catch the slowly faltering toy. Maybe it’s just his thinking face or something? Cause who can be unhappy while there’s a floating fish!?!?

… Okay yeah his question doesn’t do the best job of clearing it up. ]

Are you sure dude? This is like… pretty cool. Magic and all that…

[ She glances between him and the toy. ]

Unless there’s a lot of magic where you’re from I guess?

Absolutely not.

( It does take quite a lot to impress him, to be fair. He has yet to come across any spell or a magical item that has done that. Perhaps if it could do something a little more useful than provide amusement. He scoffs, )

It is nothing more than deceit and parlor tricks. Where I'm from, society did not take kindly to either.

( And as such, neither does he. )

[ Those are pretty universal right? ]

( He may not have been to the circus himself, but it had been quite the popular form of entertainment in Paris, so he knows of it. He concedes the matter with a huff, and says, )

It has its place. Witchcraft, however, does not. Why do you find it so amusing?
