[Setting up camp was heart-achingly familiar. Except there was no Gladio telling him and Prompto to do less complaining and more working. No fancy Coleman tent and no warmth billowing off a roaring fire. No fancy meal to be prepared. And there definitely would be no sun rise to greet them.

Still, it was habit that drew Noctis to sit near the single torch they were currently using as a makeshift beacon. Before they had set out he had stuffed Armiger full of freshly baked bread and other non-perishable items that could be easily stored away and pulled out when needed. Which of course means he's currently eating what could only be called a bread sandwich for dinner, but there's plenty to go around.

It's late, probably, and he can't sleep, despite how exhausted he actually is. Mostly because it's eerily silent and it leaves him with nothing but his thoughts.]

It's too quiet out here.

[The Soldier isn't sleeping, either, but it's doing that on purpose. It has been professional with the deposed king, but also careful. It definitely overstepped its bounds in their first conversation, and half expects retaliation at some point. (If this were HYDRA, there would have been retaliation well before now. It's like waiting for a shoe to drop that never fucking drops.)

But Noctis is initiating conversation. So it'll reply.]

Quiet isn't always bad.

[Noctis is a master at holding grudges - it's those good Lucis Caelum genes at work - but only against people who deserve it. And despite whatever line may have been crossed, the soldier definitely hasn't come anywhere near that point yet.]

Maybe not. It's just weird, you know? Like in video games when something is about to go down it always gets really quiet.

[Video games? Not actually one of the modern inventions the Soldier has experience with. So it blinks once to show mild confusion, but leaves it without an actual question. Probably not important. Instead, it offers, by way of perhaps reassurance,]

When it's quiet I can hear if something gets close enough to be trouble.

[Video games are super, duper important and you have no idea what you're missing out on.

Okay so they're only that important if you're Noctis.]

Good to know. [It's not like he's that worried about something sneaking up on them that they couldn't handle, but he'd rather not risk it either.] Back home, all you could hear at night was the daemons. Even at the havens.

[Now he's talking actual nonsense. "Video games" was at least something you can guess the context of, but demons aren't real... are they? (Maybe not hell-demons, but...) Maybe given the whole "people from other worlds" thing, maybe that means something on Noctis's world. So the Soldier glances sidelong at him and asks, so it can better understand what he's talking about.]

Demons?

[You would be amazed at all of the things that are real in his world.]

Monsters. They only come out at night. Most places use lights to keep them away. And they don't bother the havens. But they make travel difficult for most people.

[It really would be. The strangest things the Soldier is used to dealing with, prior to dying, were awful electronic chairs, annoying backup for targets that can fly with metal wings, and idiot targets in stupid outfits. It's starting to wonder at the worlds these people are coming from, Jesus.]

And they were loud. So you could hear them coming too.

[Hopefully? There has to be a bright side to that, right?]

Most of the time. Some of them could be pretty quiet though.

[He couldn't even tell you what the weirdest thing he's ever experienced is. There's at least twenty things that could count.]

I never thought I'd say this, but I actually kind of miss Gladio's snoring.

Why would anyone miss snoring?

[That sounds kind of counter-intuitive. Snoring keeps other people awake. And isn't generally a sign of healthy sleeping, is it?]

[Gladio is like six foot six inches and two hundred and sixty pounds of solid muscle mass. Who knows why he snores. Probably so he can be just annoying when asleep as he is awake.]

Guess you just get used to things after a while. Besides, it wasn't like we could just shove him over and make him stop. Me and Prompto tried once. I ended up with his arm slung across me. I almost died.

[The only way Noctis could have almost died is if that arm was as metal as the Soldier's. (He's exaggerating, dumbass. Shut up.) Besides, the Soldier thinks it can think of a better reason why this Gladio guy would pin his friend down.]

Are you sure he didn't do that on purpose to keep you from trying it again.

[And to amuse himself. The Soldier may not be allowed to prank people, but it still knows how.]

[You stop that you stop that right now. Gladio's arms are heavy and you've seen him, right? He's a stick. Not even. Like half a stick. A twig, if you will.]

I feel so called out right now. [And he just came to have a good time.] Ignis does the same thing. Flings an arm around me when we sleep. Says I wiggle around too much.

[The Soldier doesn't smile, but it does kind of want to. Good response, little deposed king.]

Sounds reasonable. Wriggling would keep somebody awake.

[It can easily imagine a small, wriggly person sharing the bed, more clearly than it anticipated. That time it does smile a bit, even if it's weird, because the Soldier hadn't actually had a bed ever.]

[Kakyoin likes camping, not that he'll admit it. He hasn't been camping with near strangers in... ever, and that much makes him a little uncomfortable, but he's present and helpful enough with setting up, if a little reserved.

And he's still reserved when it's time to eat... bread, which is incredibly boring. He's thinking idly about what kind of breakfast with actual flavor he could scrounge up in the morning when someone speaks, and, ah--]

Not anymore. [no wait that's RUDE] That is to say... yes?

[nailing it]

[Do you have any idea how many times he eaten fire roasted toast? And then complained about it? But apparently his only other option is a can of cold beans and he just isn't about that life.

If Ignis doesn't cook them something edible in the morning he might just resort to starving until they get back.]

Smooth. [Thankfully, this is exactly how he normally is with his friends.] Are you always this charming?

[Starting this off with a big oof... Kakyoin hums down at his sad food, like maybe he can just leave it at that?

...No, no, alright.]

I'm not usually this tired.

Trekking through the forest not your thing?

[Says the guy who literally complains about it all the time at home.]

I'm not used to it, no.

[Picking at his bread... hmm...]

Actually, I've spent more time in the desert. Not... that that's any better.
