INTRO LOG: AUGUST

INTRO LOG: AUGUST
DARK, DARK, DARK

characters: everyone.
location: all over beacon!
date/time: the first part of august.
content: a few new faces, the teleporter is up to old tricks, and overall just loving not being trapped in an underwater science station right about now.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

The first thing you're aware of as you come to is the glow of a lantern, just within reach. Hazily, you start to recall the events leading up to your arrival. You died, somehow, but how does that equate to you being wherever you are?

The second thing you're aware of is that you're being handed a slice of cherry pie by a six-limbed masked creature with a hairnet. Looking around, you find yourself inside a school cafeteria. The school looks to be in decent condition, despite being dark and clearly abandoned - except by whatever this creature is. Stick around long enough and they will also serve some chicken nuggets and a box of milk. Wander a bit, and you may find a memorial wall for dozens of unfamiliar names and faces. Where is this?

A few answers can be found if you pick up and look through the tablet that's settled right beside the lantern. Some of the information is a little out of date at this point, but the most important details are still there: yes, you're really dead, keep your lantern close, and watch out for the spirits. You might notice mention of a ferry, but that's odd, especially if you're nowhere near the lake...

Leaving where you are and using the provided map on the tablet will help you find your way to town, and along the way you might find some out of place items, like crates of food or toiletries or clothing. Feel free to grab what you find as you make your way there, your new neighbors are sure to appreciate it.

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. It's still a little messed up (maybe someone might want to record a new message?), it has plenty of important information to share. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records that were thankfully saved from the bad storm a few months ago. If that's not enough, there's many long-time residents of Beacon that will be happy to share how things go around here. If not in person, network works too.

hide and seek.

The teleporter repair team has been hard at work, and their hard work has paid off. Items have arrived in Beacon aplenty! Only, the aiming protocol is still a little off and it's still all over. Whoops. While anyone with a specific request will find a spirit guide to help them find their wares, everything and anything else is fair game for a little fun.

The spirits are in a playful mood, and have taken the liberty of locating all these lost sundries and supplies. And of course, after that, they chose to hide them around town. Spirits vary from great at hiding things (lining a hollowed out trunk with swim trunks) to downright terrible (is it really "hiding" that sheet of plywood when you put it behind a streetlight that is smaller than it is?), though they seem to enjoy the experience either way.

Need something in particular and don't know where to start? Don't worry, spirits will be happy to give hints. If you can understand their esoteric forms of communication, that is. Others give away the game in the fact they hide with the items themselves, and find the prank so hilarious that little snuffles and giggles are an easy clue to the stowed stash. If characters play along long enough, the spirits will give up the game and will show the poor things with no seeking skills what they've hidden. Still, why not have a little fun with it? The spirits sure are!

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to The Next Night! We're so glad to have you with us, both new and old. For a run-down on what's upcoming in August, please see the August gameplan, or check the calendar for a quick overview!

As a reminder, things like newcomer arrivals, item deliveries, and lantern repair all depend on the help of the characters in the game! If your character would be interested in assisting with the equipment at Dr. Solis' Lab in any way, please let us know!

DELIVERIES

The newly ported in items have arrived, but as in July, they're still kind of everywhere. Learning to use this portal technology is hard, and more hands helping out are always appreciated! As mentioned above, the spirits will readily help find people's personal requests, but the general resupplies? Guess you'd better be willing to play the spirits' latest little game. The following can be found, one way or another:

  • The monthly store restock, which provides enough food, general sundry items, and basic supplies to comfortably last the group a month. You can check what kind of items to expect in a monthly restock here.

  • For Elektra Natchios: several slightly oversized t-shirts and sweatpants made of comfortable materials, a bottle of black nail polish (chip resistant), a bottle of whiskey with a slight odor of sewer when the bottle is opened (though it tastes fine), and a teddy bear.

  • For Rosinante Donquixote: 4 boxes each (25 rounds per box) of shotgun and flintlock pistol ammo, except in every box two of the rounds have been replaced with nerf darts that some poor kids probably lost long ago.

  • For Fitz Kreiner: A limited set of lockpicking tools and a set of locks to practice on, and some paper umbrellas which may require some disassembly before they can be used.

  • For Matt Murdock: an assortment of 14 lovely rings (not all pictured here) as well as 6 rings to share with his friends!

If you submitted an item request last month and we've missed it here, let us know!

[ she most certainly does. judging by how well-equipped they are at the moment. this seems like the perfect person to speak with for what she has in mind. ]

So far, so good. My name is Lorem Laurel and I'm one of the new residents here. [ so to speak.

she raises her arm up to activate her .comm device, summoning the private entries page to begin taking notes. ]
I hope you don't mind but could I hear your thoughts on the current state of the village. Any opinions on the structures, the viability of repairing them, and so on? The- [ how to put it delicately? ] -condition of it has me intrigued since I made my way here from the school.

[She's pretty clearly new, since they don't know her. That they haven't actually gotten her to introduce herself yet is probably an oversight.

They don't quite introduce themselves, back, and only partly because her question distracts them. Geez. Soldat blinks once, then ducks their head a little.]

We've been using the worse-off ones for building supplies for. A while. Repairing bridges and things. Many of them aren't going to be salvageable at this point. And it hasn't been a priority. Because they're so easy to cut off from the main rally points.

[Hmm. That's a little worrying. Soldat does understand the fear, especially given the spirits here and their ability to get into one's mind, and the fractured memories of the Words.]

There are people who could stop you if you were made to cause harm. I am probably one of them. If you lost control of your actions out here, away from people. What would you do? Seek out people to hurt? Or just stay in one place?

( Matt isn't the best person to share about their particular exploration, but, he'll provide what he can. )

We explored the power wing of the station. It seems to run on emergency protocols after the portal mishap. There's plenty of chemicals and dangers in those tunnels, I'd explore with caution.

There are also spirits that can perfectly blend with the environment, but they only seem to move when disturbed. There's also a spirit there that seems to have collected the bodies of the former Night Market members. It wasn't hostile to us, and only wanted help retrieving the last body, but I can't say I'm comfortable with corpses being left that way.

I'm not particularly equipped to say much about the World Eater itself, but it clearly has the ability to take light from lanterns and cause psychological effects as well as physical injuries.

HIDE & SEEK.

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-08-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Matt also isn't looking for anything in particular, though the antics of the spirits are a nice distraction from... everything. The fact he died, again. Or that his lantern not functioning as usual. Even just the disaster of the Helix Station and the fight against the monster stuck in the portal. It's been a lot to process, safe to say. And the child-like giggles of young minded spirits is a bit of a balm to weary nerves.

That, and his mandrake spirit friend could use a chance to have some fun. They are doing more of the seeking than he is, though he will occasionally make a show of listening for the spirits that giggle madly the second anyone gets close. The mandrake doesn't seem to realize the correlation, wandering around searching under leaves and under branches, and not finding much of anything.

"Not so far," he admits to the inquiry, brow lining a little as that's not a voice he recognizes. Matt has stupid supersenses, he's going to notice the lack of clothes at some point... just not immediately. "Are you looking for something?"

[at least he has some sense of sympathy, there]

It is good to see that the lantern repairs are working as needed. I must say it was...devastating, to stand there and watch it simply suck the light out of your lantern. We had no defense against it, except to somehow stay out of its range which was impossible.

Are you managing well, now?
pure_havoc: (suspicious)

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-08-05 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[he nods when named]

So it was, in the vision the green-eyed spirits visited upon me and the others. I doubt they were lying to us since Weaver essentially confirmed it.

[he doesn't say that he wouldn't blame them for doing as was done to them but...]

So. It must have turned into a free for all at some point, after the green-eyes escaped and either assisted eliminating the crew or found them already dead.

WELCOME

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-08-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
( it seems the portal hasn't quite figured itself out yet. and thus, one can expect supplies to show up all over town. Matt has been forced to take it slow of late, get used to a lantern that will occasionally consider snuffing itself. still, he can only manage to be so relaxed. and wandering the dark to try and locate supplies that need to be recovered is not an especially hard or dangerous task.

well, at least not usually. he hasn't canvased this particular building much lately, but safe to say he hadn't been expecting anyone in it. the weapon is not one he's familiar with, even though he can hear it. he lifts his hands in a show of peace, and between the walking cane in one hand and mirrored sunglasses, Danse might be able to put two and two together that he's got a blind guy in a stick up.
)

All right, ( Matt says, surprisingly calm for a guy with a gun pointed at him. ) I didn't mean to startle you. I was just looking for supplies.

moving in.

( Matt doesn't technically live in the village any longer, but that doesn't mean he never ends up there. he'll occasionally wander through, looking for threats or concerns. sometimes it's just a wistful journey through the streets, as he does miss the little cabin he shared with Elektra. it's mostly caved in, now.

it's on one of those jaunts that Laurel flags him down, though he does obligingly slow at her greeting. he offers a limited smile in greeting of his own.
) Nice to meet you. I'm Matt.

( what with the sunglasses indoors and the walking cane he was using to tap out his path, he probably does not have to mention he's the resident blind guy. she'll put two and two together on that one on her own. ) All right. I'm happy to help if I can. ( he remembers what it was like to be new in Beacon. disorienting and a little heartbreaking. he's happy to be a buffer to make the experience a little easier when he can. )

I guess we can't count on a creature that eats worlds to play fair, but ... it makes me wonder what sort of chance we'd stand close range, with one that was full grown.

( if what they'd faced in the portal room had been only a fledgling, he can't say he likes the odds of facing an army of them fully grown. )

I'm all right. My lantern seems a bit worse for the wear, but I'm still in one piece.

[There's a moment of pause as Danse looks over the situation. The hallmarks of a blind person are not overly common in the wasteland, but he'll probably be able to put it together shortly. In any case the man is quick to put his hands up, so Danse lowers the rifle.]

My apologies. I wasn't expecting anyone to come in.

[He keeps one hand on the rifle as he clicks it back into its holster.]

This box appeared here overnight. It contains clothing and some other goods. Are these the supplies you were looking for?

[personal profile] bleedingsteel 2020-08-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I don't even know if it's possible for it to happen.

[After all, if the Institute wanted to take out the Brotherhood of Steel, they had all the time in the world to flip the switch on Danse. They never had, and it was hard to tell if that was because they didn't see a need to, or if they had actually lost track of him. Maybe there was no switch.

He can't be sure. He'll never be sure.
]

Regardless, it's my responsibility to be cautious.

( Matt hasn't properly asked for much of anything since the flood, and thusly, it's a bit of a new experience to have to get a spirit to lead him to what he was looking for. thankfully it's not too far out of town, but the pile of rings is... well, he can feel them and that's something, but it turns out seeing is really helpful when it comes to picking one.

he collects the pile and drags it along with him to the Invincible, tucked in at one of the tables with food he's neglecting to attempt to get a sense of his haul, rather unsuccessfully. when he hears footsteps nearby, he swallows his pride and requests,
)

You have a minute? What does this look like? This... this can't be right. ( it feels like a ring, but... only barely........ )

Yeah, she doesn't like that at all. She presses her lips together for a moment, trying to choose her words. She doesn't want to pick a fight. She's just arrived, after all, but she knows enough that she shouldn't go around alienating herself from everyone around her.

"I see," she says, her tone gentle. "And who or what do you plan to share violence with?"

For a moment Merwen goes very still, not exactly out of shock, but a deep surprise, certainly, and the sudden loss of all the amused curiosity she'd held about the spirits until this point.

"If that is true, then there is something very tragic about their existence. These are trapped souls. They should be reborn, not caught here."
theimpatientone: (smile)

[personal profile] theimpatientone 2020-08-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I need nothing. I am merely sharing in the spirit of the event." She smiles a little at her own joke, mild as it is, and lifts her lantern to look at him a little closer. "I have only been here a short time, so I have much to learn. This seems to be a good place to start. I am Merwen the Impatient One."

Over a year. One of the longest who's still left.

[Hard to picture, but it's true now. Weaver, then Will, then those who came in the first group after the last reset. Well, and perhaps Diode although he is only recently returned, and Clara, who perhaps doesn't count, being a robot without any obvious lantern.]

I'm Rosinante.

[He leans forward to offer a hand without standing up. Even sitting, he's certainly tall enough - so there's no need to tower over someone indoors just to introduce himself.]
callada: (esa locura que nos es natural)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-06 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[He stands and brushes dirt off his knees, then bends down a little to retrieve the box and inspect it for himself. Yes, it says it's what he ordered - but as he opens it up, he sees two of the bullets are definitely not bullets. Puzzled, he pulls one of the foam tubes out by the suction cup end and stares quizzically at it.]

Seems like they've done more than just toss it around. What do you suppose this is?

[personal profile] bleedingsteel 2020-08-06 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Though he almost does, out of reflex, he can't bring himself to introduce himself by rank. Even in a place where no one knows what the Brotherhood is, he knows that he's no longer fit to represent them.]

Danse. Pleased to meet you, apart from the circumstances.

[He provides a firm and perfectly military handshake.]

I arrived with my laser rifle, but unfortunately my limited supply of fusion cells requires me to relegate it to emergency use only. [Delivered with all the confidence of a man unaware that he sounds like he swallowed a thesaurus.]
callada: (Cool Dude TM)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-06 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, that's, hm. Some precise wording there. Well, he has nothing at all against someone having an education and using it. He's the one who hangs out with Will all the time, after all.

Anyway, the mention of a laser rifle makes his eyes light up a little. That's more than enough to take his mind off the madness the world eater instilled, and the growling stomach that came with it.]

Laser rifle? You have that with you?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-06 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Another spirit goes darting off past them, this one with a basket of what looked like tools. He's not fast enough to lunge after it and the fact that he even wanted to disturbs him. Whatever the world eater did, he's going to have to get this under control. He does watch it as it runs off into the darkness outside their lanterns' range, and frowns. Someone probably will have to track those down later, they'll need them.

"Green-eyed spirits," he replies, still looking in the direction the smaller spirit had gone before returning his attention to her. "We actually just ran into some more a few weeks ago. They nearly killed a bunch of us. Violence is the only thing that gets them to leave."

As far as he has been able to determine, anyway. He shrugs, and sets the box back into the bag with a slight rattle as it settles.
bleedingsteel: (10)

Always.

[It's clipped to his belt with a makeshift holster that he appears to have rigged up out of junk. He doesn't hand it over, but does allow a close-up look.]

It's the standard-issue primary weapon, but I've made some custom modifications to it.
callada: (se siente bien estar aquí)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-06 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Standard-issue, he says? That's a familiar phrase. He gives the rifle an appreciative look, already coming up with things to ask about such an exotic weapon, but first -]

Are you military back home, then?
bleedingsteel: (15)

[personal profile] bleedingsteel 2020-08-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
[The question almost seems to catch Danse by surprise. Less like he's surprised Rosinante asked, and more like he's just realized the answer.]

Not anymore.

[If he's lucky, maybe Rosinante will take that to mean "because now I'm here and dead." His luck hasn't been great recently.]
callada: (just the usual heroics)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-06 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Could be because he's dead, could be because he quit. Those kinds of questions can wait - either way it's sensitive to someone who's brand new here.]

I was in the Marines back home. Commander, actually. Feels like a long time ago now. This is our standard issue, though.

[He reaches for the holster at his hip and withdraws an antiquated-looking flintlock pistol with a wood stock.]

Never heard the word "laser" before I got here.
