EVENT LOG: TURN THE LIGHTS OFF

EVENT LOG:
TURN THE LIGHTS OFF
characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: january 20-29.
content: the lanterns begin to malfunction.
warnings: body horror and psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.
you'll become one
January 20th arrives the same as all the days before it. There's no great pulse of warning that throbs through the air, no ominous wind that causes the bonfire to shudder. The spirits are neither agitated nor do they hide. You could almost miss the change, if the lanterns weren't always by your side. There's no explanation that comes with the way that it's changed, but it's impossible not to worry when it's happened so suddenly.
Maybe it takes a few days, or maybe it only takes a few hours, but suddenly it isn't just the lanterns that have changed. You, yourself, have become somehow different. It's possible that you won't even have the right state of mind to wonder how long it will last. At the very least, it appears you aren't alone. All across Beacon, lanterns are changing, and changing the people with them.
Out in the distance, the lighthouse's beam has turned green.

"No! No, I - don't. Don't, then."
He's far less eloquent like this than he'd like to be, and soon the giggling resumes, though at least it's less frantic than a moment ago. "Ha, no, I have too many - I can't. But it's fine! Everything is fine like this!" he exclaims, snorting at the apparent hilarity of his own failure. "You're very purple!" he adds abruptly, which is one of the less intelligent things he's probably said all month but right now is just not the time for brilliance.

Mewtwo's tail twitches and there's a brief flicker of something that might be amusement in its very intense stare. "Your lantern is making you behave very strangely, indeed."
Says the one perpetually disassociating, but at least that seems to be ebbing right now.

"Look! I - I figured it out!" he announces triumphantly, and laughs at his own brilliance to the point where he manages to tip his own chair over. He spills out onto the floor and instead of getting right back up like usual he lies there laughing, but slaps a hand onto his chest this time and falls entirely silent. Oh, he's still beaming, still making all the motions of laughter, but there's no sound. wouldn't want to upset that spirit, after all.
The tablet screen reads:
Can't talk much like this. Even what I say comes out changed. Not as funny as it looks. Sorry we had to meet like this.

"I am pleased to know that you exist at all. I have seen things since my lantern became dysfunctional that were not real."

Green eyed spirits normally make hallucinations. This is something different. Never seen anything like it. Lanterns affected directly.

It expresses the thought out loud, before it decides that can't be right. "No. I would have noticed them. And if not them, then who... And for what purpose?"
It's not exactly efficient. Perhaps the World Eaters are to blame? It knows so little about them at this point...

"Don't know! Nobody knows! Maybe if we wait they'll turn even more colors!" he exclaims as if this is particularly delightful, despite the worried look buried somewhere in his expression. "Just have to wait and see!"

"If it is a person responsible, I would make them pay for this. I do not like my mind to be treated like a plaything."

For of course, he knows about Coraline's dream, having heard from her and others. But all the spirits are the same sort of monster, right? The librarian might have consumed the previous human resident who lived here, but so did many of the other spirits when they took over from those who once lived in this town.
And if anyone has seen things like these lanterns changing color in all this time, it's a spirit who has been here since the beginning.
