EVENT LOG: ENTER MR SANDMAN (DEFENDERS)

EVENT LOG:
ENTER MR. SANDMAN (DEFENDERS)

characters: those who signed up as defenders for the event
location: all around Beacon
date/time: november 16-29
content: the defenders attempt to drive off a spirit invasion
warnings: lots of horror! body horror, psychological horror, gore, violence, etc.. please cw all threads where appropriate! mods will do the same

in your closet, in your head.

It all happens in a matter of moments. Your friends, your companions, and even some people you aren't all that fond of; everyone who took so much as a bite of the spirits' feast suddenly collapses into a comatose heap. Which is bad enough already, but the worst, by far, is yet to come.

Before anyone can really figure out what's happened to the sleepers, the woods surrounding the town come alive with sound. Rustling, screeching, clicking, howling, and under it all, the characteristic hoots and whistles of the forest spirit tongue. But these aren't the friendly creatures that set up the banquet in the first place, and they aren't the familiar faces (or masks) from around Beacon. As they begin to emerge, bursting forth from the trees, these spirits reveal themselves as a horrifying army of terrors. And sprinkled among them, distinguishable by the emerald glint in their sockets, are the infamous "green eyes", the dangerous spirits that appeared once before.

Attempting to talk to these spirits is a moot point, made obvious by their immediate assault on anyone they get close to. They attack with claws and teeth, with limbs far stronger than they have any right to be, and the green eyes, as they are wont to do, will try to get into your head. Somehow, they seem to know what it is that scares you most, and they don't seem too hesitant to use it. It's not clear what they want— are they here to eradicate you? To frighten you? To send a message?

Whatever the case, one thing is very clear: you and everyone else, sleeping or waking, are in serious danger. Are you ready to defend Beacon?

Perimeter Defense
The best thing to do is hold the line. He knows from experience if they get overwhelmed that's when things start to go badly, and fast. Almost everyone he's met has some sort of fighting ability, some have powers, so he's not worried about the competency of the town to stand against a siege, but he is concerned that they have no way to gauge the numbers of the enemies. The creatures that are attacking them are such malformed, twisted up abominations that he can't honestly tell if he's seen the same one twice or multiple different ones all with too many arms and teeth.

They're not being dissuaded by any fighting attempts, they don't even seem to be running back to the forest to regroup before attacking again. That kind of single-minded focus is troublesome, and leads him to think they're being controlled rather than doing this to defend their home or scare off the residents.

Keeping them from getting to their targets is the best defense right now until the residents can organize some sort of counter offensive. So Kuai is putting up icewalls at major points where they might come through the forest. He can't wall off the entire town, and when this starts to melt it may flood, but it's better than nothing.

Especially when he can put one up right in front of a charging spirit and get the satisfying splatting sound of the thing running into it headfirst.

Round 1: FIGHT
All fighters need rest, but that is definitely not why Kuai makes frequent returns to the Invincible to check on those who are safely lodged inside. He'd fight until he literally dropped, so it's probably good that he has these little breaks to make sure everyone is safe and see if there's anything he missed while out fighting.

"Is everyone holding up? Any new injuries? Has anyone gotten a sense of the numbers we're dealing with?" Either number of residents who've been poisoned and are unconscious or number of enemies. He'll take any information he can get.

"We cannot stand siege forever, who has fighting skill?" He frowns, not liking any of the possible outcomes here. "Some need to stay and protect those who are unconscious. But we need to do something to east the onslaught."

Round End: Brutality - (Later in the event)
Even someone as meticulously trained and ready as Kuai can't fight twenty-four hours a day for weeks. He's getting tired, starting to break down - and let's face it, he's not as young as he used to be. He can be found occasionally leaning against the wall of the Invincible taking a breather and ignoring his injuries.

It might be beneficial for someone to force him to bandage those. Freezing wounds closed isn't a viable medical procedure.
worthallthis: (but i did it)

Round 1: FIGHT

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-17 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The Soldier is currently refueling when Kuai stops by, by which we mean they are shoving the first of three sandwiches into their face rapidly and efficiently and surprisingly neatly for the speed at which it's disappearing, carrying the plate and a knife in the metal hand while using the flesh one to eat, as they walk the inside perimeter of the building listening for breach attempts.

They blink once at Kuai's question, focusing in on him. "I fight." They have been fighting, as evidenced by sweaty hair, a half-healed cut on their face, and tears in the clothing here and there which have been mostly cleaned of blood. "Do you want to organize an actual offensive?"
paletteswap: (We're done talking)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh right, food. That's a thing he should probably do. While technically in this place he can survive on tea alone, being dead and all, it's not ideal.

"I think we'll need to. The other option is to defend this place until they give up and go away. I don't find that likely to happen." The creatures are determined, and he doubts that they'll stop until either they achieve their goal or they suffer enough losses to become ineffective.

"How have you been faring?"

Judging from the shorter sentences he's pretty sure that he's talking to Soldat, but he wants to get him talking a bit more to make sure. It would be rude to assume.
worthallthis: (looking around)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-18 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
The accent is different, too, which helps differentiate the two, the words much more clearly enunciated. "Or we could just keep killing them in ones and twos. Thin out the horde. Which is what I've been doing." The Soldier does note the look at their plate, though, and without comment offers one of the two remaining sandwiches there to Kuai. They can always make another one, or have some of the stew that's simmering in the kitchen for everyone to share.

"I'm okay. Keeping people safe." Which is their only goal here, to be honest. "You?"
paletteswap: (Unsure)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-23 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A sandwich is not the most elegant meal he's ever eaten, but he'll take it, offering a nod of thanks towards the Soldier.

"Ones and twos may work for a while, but there may be hundreds of them. It becomes a war of attrition." If it hadn't gotten to that point already.

"The same. The few I've killed seem to not be making a dent in their numbers, but more importantly we seem to have gotten those who were rendered unconscious to safety. I haven't seen anyone else out there that needs to be secured."

Not to say that there might have been some that have already died, but he'd heard Rosinante doing a headcount earlier - he'd leave it to him to figure out who was missing. Everyone that Kuai knew had been accounted for.
worthallthis: (thinking)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Food is food, man. This one has most of the major food groups, too (thick slices of cheese and meat, tomato and lettuce, some kind of green fruit thing that was tasty, and some sharp yellow sauce). It's good fuel and doesn't taste terrible, it's fine.

The Soldier has also been doing a lot of hunting around, and all of their own friends and associates appear to be accounted for. There are a few faces they don't have names for that they haven't seen yet, though.

"We come back after we die," the Soldier points out with a thoughtful frown. "Do they? If our numbers do not actually go down. And theirs do. We may have an advantage."
paletteswap: (Prepare to fight)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-24 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not rice which is basically all he eats. But it's fine. It'll keep him alert and going for a while longer.

"I'm unsure. If they do they return elsewhere and not in the church or someone would have noticed by now. I wouldn't count on us returning after death as a free pass for recklessness either. Not all who die here return."
worthallthis: (doubtful)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-24 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I am not reckless," the Soldier promises. This may or may not be a lie; they don't think it's a lie, but their perspectives are hopelessly skewed. As evidenced by: "But I am tougher than most people. And trained very well. So far, I appear to be slightly stronger than most of the attacking spirits, though they are often slightly faster." Being superhuman is fun. (Only most of the time not so much.)
paletteswap: (Before the battle)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Kuai hasn't seen him fighting enough times to really judge, but with things starting to get desperate the longer this battle goes on, it's only natural that people start to get sloppy and reckless. Though the Soldier does seem to be one of the calmer ones.

"That's something. They seem to be determined to get to us, to the point that they make mistakes to their detriment. If they backed off and regrouped they'd be even more dangerous - but I witnessed one continue to fight towards us to try and get inside here even as it was dying. It makes me wonder if something is driving them forward."

Last time it had been Robin with the foghorn, maybe this time it's something else.
worthallthis: (determined mean)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
"The green-eyes." If that's really what's happening, it's not hard to work out what's behind it. And the Soldier is no stranger to being driven by an outside force, so can easily imagine a force like that forcing the other spirits to attack. They frown at their sandwich. "The ones that caused the hallucinations. The ones that attacked when people tried to connect the Lighthouse. They're the dangerous ones. I was warned about them in particular."
paletteswap: (Discussion)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-25 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
He'd put together that the green eyed ones were different than the regular spirits that interacted with them in a much friendlier manner, but not why. Maybe they were different species, or had different intentions. Were they attacking the friendly spirits as well? It occurred to him only now that he hadn't seen any of the regular forest creatures since this started.

"Someone warned you about them? What did they say?"
worthallthis: (regret)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-25 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I have a contact with the spirits. They said that the green-eyes are 'nasty'. Mean. Not just to us. To the other spirits, too. That they were the ones behind the hallucinations. That they don't like us, or anybody." The Soldier looks aside again, away from both meal and Kuai. Looks vaguely worried, in fact. "I looked for my contact yesterday. I can't find them."
paletteswap: (Default)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-25 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I see. Communicating using the instruments we were given? Or do some speak?" He'd tried before with several of the friendly spirits but there was limit to how much could be pantomimed.

"I wonder if they are being attacked as well, I've not seen any of the familiar ones that are normally around. I hope they're well."

For being a menacing ice assassin he's quite soft when it comes to innocent people or in this case creatures.

"Perhaps they didn't know what would happen during the feast."
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-11-25 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They're both just soft-hearted assassins, apparently. Though at least Kuai got to decide to be one.

"Morse Code. I can't use the instruments well enough." They hold up the metal hand briefly, to indicate that the metal fingertips have no give for covering holes properly. "Not all of the spirits know it, but many of them do. Can sing some of the words, but my range. Isn't as good as theirs. So Morse is easier. I'm pretty sure none of the ones who know us. Would have hurt us on purpose. Or without being coerced."
paletteswap: (Honor their memories)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
These two need a vacation. Not that they'd know how to relax, but they need it.

"Strange they would know that. I wonder if someone here previously taught them." Undeniably useful if the Soldier knew morse code and could communicate, but why would forest spirits on some other realm know an Earth military language?

"No, that seems unlike them. Many genuinely seem to want to help us. And now this..Could the green eyed ones be associated with the world eaters?"

Brutality

[personal profile] saibot 2019-11-24 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
"It's almost disappointing that nothing has killed you yet." Though he'd be the disappointed one had Kuai died so easily and not by his own hand.

Not that any of it seemed to matter here with the way people came back. Then again, not everyone who disappeared or died has returned so there is that. He still hasn't figured out if there's some correlation between those who come back and those who don't.

"Been spending this entire time playing the hero have you?"
paletteswap: (Test your might)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've been assisting those who need it." So yes, playing the hero as he always does.

"What have you been doing? Teleporting people into the woods to let them die?" Such a high opinion he has of his brother. But he's tired and cranky and would like to have a good night's sleep for once.
saibot: (24)

[personal profile] saibot 2019-11-25 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
"No, but that suggestion is duly noted." And was actually a good idea. He could get rid of a few annoying ones that way. Drop them off in the middle of the rampaging spirits ...

"And you always were so soft, Kuai. An unbecoming trait for an assassin, but I suppose it was one of your many flaws."

Not that he never helped anyone in the past but you know that doesn't matter.
paletteswap: (You disappoint me)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-25 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one hell of a glare you're getting Bi-Han.

"Do you have nothing better to do than this? I am surprised you aren't revelling in the bloodshed."

The first opportunity for unrestrained murder and instead he's inside harassing his brother.
saibot: (30)

[personal profile] saibot 2019-11-27 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I am. Most here are so very fragile. Don't you agree?"

Harassing his brother is what he does. The glare doesn't seem to bother him, though it's hard to see his expression from behind the mask.

"You waste your time on them."
paletteswap: (Kori blade)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-11-27 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not everyone is a warrior." So yes, he agrees but won't say it.

"And what do you think is a better use of my time if not this?"
saibot: (19)

[personal profile] saibot 2019-12-04 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Hardly anyone here remotely qualifies as one. And why ask when you will not listen? Your soft-hearted disappointment of a self will most likely stay around to play body-guard for the people anyway."

Disappointment was an understatement for the loathing he usually felt towards his brother. Not that he has emotions or anything like that.
paletteswap: (Finish this)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-12-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
"You would be surprised how many here are skilled fighters, you underestimate them at your peril. Someday your ego will allow you to understand that you are not infallible." Kuai is reasonably confident that at some point his brother will piss off the wrong person and get the shit kicked out of him. It'll happen at some point.

"Strange that I am the soft-hearted one, yet I am the one who lived. That says more about you, than it does of me."
saibot: (30)

[personal profile] saibot 2019-12-22 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"But you did die, Kuai. Or else you would not be here. I have risen beyond the bounds of death .. something you will not achieve."

Bi-Han will probably piss off the wrong person eventually. Thankfully most people do their best to avoid him and his creepy shadow.
paletteswap: (Determined)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-12-22 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Everyone dies eventually. And you are trapped here, same as everyone else."

Not much of a lord of the dead if he's stuck with the rest of them. Creepy clone notwithstanding, shadow powers aren't going to keep him from getting lost in the forest, or being murdered by spirits, or any of the other things that keep happening.

"I don't want to become what you are. You should not want to become what you are." But that's neither here nor there, and nothing to be done about Bi-Han's state at the present. "Have you been fighting the spirits? Or merely causing trouble?"
