INTRO LOG: OCTOBER

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
DON'T STOP ME NOW

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: october 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. scavenger hunt prizes are awarded. the ferry capsizes in a blaze of glory.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for playing catch up! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

When the ferry docks, it seems as though you've been spared from any weirdness this month! It's good to have a break now and then, isn't it? And if you participated in the scavenger hunt, you're probably eagerly awaiting your promised prize—

But, ohp, what's that sound? Is that the ferry's engine firing up again? The ship roars to life again as some brave mutineers overthrow its autopilot system. Crowley and the Winter Soldier man the ferry's control room while Aziraphale flits between the cargo hold and the deck, attempting to assuage any accidental kidnapees with reassuring words and cake.

Unfortunately, the joyride is shortlived. Between the ferry's complex control panel and the haphazard attempts to override it, all the group manages to do is send the boat charging full speed ahead—which would be great if it wasn't facing the beach. The ferry jolts forward and careens smack into the dock, tearing down the entire structure and punching a sizeable hole in the ferry's hull.

Well, that could've gone better. But there's no time to dwell on the mistakes of the very recent past! The ferry is sinking, and quickly! Looks like you'll have to scramble if you want to save what's left in the cargo hold before the whole thing goes under... And that's gonna be awfully tricky without a dock.

Oh, and maybe save the new arrivals? Make sure they don't drown? But, then again, if they go down with the ship, they'll just show up again in the church... The same can't be said for the restock for the general store!

As smoke billows from the damaged ferry and the last the harbor disappears into the lake, the Lighthouse Keeper appears on the network with a pretty straightforward question. Also, the ferry's song changes, so. That happens.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.

And regarding the ferry disaster... Well, you have some options. Here's what you need to know:
  • This is a player plot organized by MJ, Xy, and Gail! A big thank-you to them for providing us with this intro log event!

  • Whether or not your character and any packages addressed to them are affected by this plot is up to you! If you would like to assume your character avoids dealing with this chaos and somehow grabs their delivery without issue, go right ahead!

  • Similarly, if you're looking for an opportunity to make your character's life harder, injury and death are always on the table! Or maybe it's your package that takes the abuse, lost forever to the lake's depths or washing up all waterlogged a week or two down the road. In short: How you engage with this plot is entirely up to you.

  • What happens to the ferry and the dock? Within a couple of hours, the ferry will sink completely, and anything on board when it goes down is lost forever. Which bodes super well for the ferry, huh? Sure hope the next batch of newcomers has some strong swimmers. Oh, and the dock is gone, too. If you want it back, you'll have to rebuild it.

  • As for Crowley, Aziraphale, Bucky, and anyone else on the ferry or dock during the collision... Hope you boys like concussions, bruised ribs, and a broken bone or two, because you've got 'em! The exact injuries are up to you, but they're the equivalent of a semi-serious car accident.

  • One last thing: The fate of the shop restocks, including all of the food for the month, depends on you! Let us know if your character will be participating in the rescue attempt. In exchange for letting us beat up your character, you can save a portion of the month's supplies! We'll let you all know on October 3 what the rations for the rest of the month will look like.

1. The ferry crash (closed to whoever gets here first I guess)

Rosinante is in the middle of handing off a package when he feels the rumble of an engine beneath his feet. He tosses the box to shore and takes firm hold of his lantern, but before he really has time to investigate what's happening, the ship surges forward, and he's thrown off the bow.

Had the dock remained, that might have been fine. He'd hoped he could just tuck and roll and land on dry ground. Instead, wooden planks fragment and collapse around him, and he goes with them into the water. He feels the horrible lethargy hit him like a wave as the interaction of devil fruit and lake renders him practically helpless, and it takes all his strength to hoist his lantern overhead so it doesn't soak as he clings desperately to a fractured piece of the pier.

But his arm is shaking, his hold on the wood is slipping, and his head won't be above water for long as the void left by the sinking ship generates a vortex of churning water that threatens to pull him under. And he sure as hell can't swim. There's a desperate gasp of "Help!" and all he can hope is that it's audible over the rest of the disaster.

2. Oct. 2-3: boat-building catch-all

What's all that noise and light over by the boathouse, you might wonder?

Well, with the ferry out of commission, it's even more obvious now that they need to get seriously thinking about building something more than a dinghy. Rosinante doesn't have the knowledge to pull that kind of construction off, but over the last couple of months he's gotten pretty efficient at sanding and shaping wood from the trees he and any others have cleared at the edge of the forest.

If curiosity isn't enough, you might get roped into temporarily assisting anyway, as Rosinante calls out, "Hey, can you give me a hand for a minute?"

3. Wildcard

Rosinante is typically found around The Invincible peering at photos of stars, with paper and pen at his side trying to make notes on what he's looking at. If not there, he can be found near the shoreline after the crash periodically trying to scavenge anything that might have washed up and return it to its owners or the general store. Or, honestly, run into him anywhere - the library, the museum, just around town are all valid. He's typically alone, puffing away at a cigarette and decorated with outlandish makeup - plus he's like almost ten feet tall so he does stand out a bit.

After the initial shock and annoyance had passed, Jason had realized that they needed to get to work on a different kind of repair project. Well, okay, repair wasn't the right word since there was NO saving the ferry, but he had heard of a different project related to boat building and wanted to help where he could. Sure, Leo had done MOST (read: 98%) of the construction of the Arog II, but that didn't mean that Jason and the others hadn't helped where they could. And, when they weren't helping, they were certainly watching as Leo fiddled with various aspects of the ship's construction and then later sailing the damned thing.

So, yeah, Jason felt fairly confident in his ability to help with making much smaller, less complicated vessles. He would do Leo (and maybe even Percy) proud. Which was why he found himself near the boathouse when Rosinante called out for help.

He jogged over, "Sure, what do you need?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-02 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Can you help me lift this? On three."

Nice to have someone new come by, even if the guy hadn't intended to work. Before Rosinante is an unfinished hull of a longer boat than the others - more of a driftboat, really. A scaled-up version of the dinghies at best. And two sawhorses sit nearby, as well as a pot of oil to experiment with waterproofing.

He stands at one end of the hull, and it becomes obvious why he needs the help, in addition to the size, when he reaches only one hand down to try and lift it. His left is held in a very makeshift fabric sling beneath the drape of his large capelike coat.
notthatjason: (Pristine)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2019-10-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
He hadn't thought to ask if someone was working on ships, but he supposed it made sense. Why someone ELSE had decided that hijacking the ferry was the more sound idea, he'd never know.

Jason gives the set up a quick look over and moves to the other end as indicated. "Yeah, no problem." Heavy lifting was DEFINITELY in his wheel house. He may not be as strong as his half-brother, the famed Hercules, but most demigods boasted a little more strength than the average human. Jason didn't spend much time bench pressing things to figure that out though. He pauses when he notices the sling, "Should you be lifting with an injury like that?"

callada: (dress best in boldly-striped sweaters)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-03 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably not," he replies nonchalantly. "One, two, three."

He's done dumber things in his life, that's for sure, and coating the hull once it's up can be done with one hand, so he figures there's no real problem with this one little bad decision. His ribs are bruised from the same impact that put his arm in the sling, and lifting definitely hurts as he hoists his end, though he's pleasantly surprised to find the stranger can carry more than he'd expected, for it's less of a challenge than he'd anticipated.

"Thanks," he says once the hull has been set down. "I don't think we've met, have we? I'm Rosinante." And he holds out his good hand to shake.
notthatjason: (Paralyzer)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2019-10-04 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if he says so. Jason makes sure to put as much lift as possible, hopefully he can ensure that the other guy doesn't hurt himself any more than he already has. Jason helps him move it to where it needs to go and once it's situated takes a step back to get a proper look at the boat.

He turns his attention away once introductions begin though and offers his own hand in return. His grip is firm and the sleeves of his jacket are rolled up in such a way as to show the edge of a tattoo on his arm, "Jason. Good to meet you Rosinate. Seems like you guys have been working on some water transportation even before the crash."
callada: (I bet Doffy uses mascara)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-04 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. Kid named Sora actually started it up, but he's gone now. Others chip in when they have time. We could always use more help though, especially after that."

Complete idiots. He hadn't even really caught sight of who all was to blame, but he's sure he'll find out soon enough. He'll make it a point to do so, in fact. Anyone who's that in favor of acting impulsively and causing massive, lasting damage to not just structures but the supplies keeping them alive needs to have an eye or two kept on them. People like that tend to repeat their stupidity.
notthatjason: (Default)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2019-10-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
He supposed it made sense an it was definitely a good project for this place. Jason decided this would be a good project to contribute too, on top of the other projects he had started taking on of course. Staying busy was important though and definitely a good distraction from the general dread this place made him feel.

"I can help," he finally says. "If you can give me more ideas about what needs doing anyway. I helped a little with building a boat once before...though mostly I was doing the heavy lifting or handing over tools."

Still, he had been there most days when Leo was working on the Argo too. They weren't going to try to build anything THAT complicated here, so maybe he could pull something off.
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-08 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," he says with a soft chuckle. "Before this, all I knew was how to sail one. Some basic repairs, maybe, but not anything about building one. That's how all of us were, so the boats are all pretty simple. I've been learning as I go. This one-" he says as he pats the hull, then gestures to the pot of oil with a nod of his head, "- I'm trying to see if oiling the wood will help any to preserve it, since we don't have varnish here.

"But the next step I'd like to take is seeing if we can get a larger boat built. Something big enough to hold four or so people. We could rig a square sail on it and really cover some water out there."
notthatjason: (Default)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2019-10-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Jason considers what he's saying, nodding thoughtfully. He looks over at the oil. "Guess it's too late to try and request some varnish, huh?" Although he hadn't requested an item himself, so he wasn't sure if maybe that just wasn't something the COULD request.

"Have these other boats been taken out on the water yet? Or are they still untested?"
callada: (just the usual heroics)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Too late indeed, although he'd seen Robin tell a few people she would try to work something out. He just shrugs and lets the comment go unanswered, lets the question be rhetorical. It doesn't hurt to see if they can use something more widely available than varnish anyway, for oil gets stocked in large quantities and this is a practical use of it. Without the ferry, it becomes even more useful to want to find a way across the lake.

"The little ones work for short distances but you'll get tired of rowing eventually. If we can't get something larger going on, I might try attaching two together with a mast in the center, but I'm worried something like that might not be very stable." Maybe a long rudder could be appended, though. He has ideas, just hasn't had the time to work through all of it. With Sora and Kairi gone, Riku seems to be helping less than he used to and there are days when Rosinante is here alone, with Mary occasionally trying to help by adding her colorful paint work.

"If you want to take one out for a spin, though, you're always welcome to. Just be careful your lantern doesn't end up overboard."
notthatjason: (Default)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2019-10-14 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Jason nods, though he honestly can't say how one would make a more stable vessel with a mast and everything. People had been sailing for centuries, even millennia, so surely it couldn't be that hard to figure out, right? If only they had like a model or something to fall back on. Maybe...maybe there was something in the library? Jason made a mental note to check there, it was one of the few places he hadn't really gone yet, but Aziraphale had mentioned there were several books there. Fantasy or not, there might be pictures or diagrams to find. Even an illustration would be better than just pulling from memory and hoping for the best.

"Thanks. I might hold off on doing that. I'm not much for sailing," he admits. At least, without Percy it feels strange. Percy was the one naturally adept to the water and could have kept even the most un-seaworthy vessel afloat for a time. Now, if they could figure out a way to fly the ship that'd be one thing, though he doubted they were going to be able to rig up something THAT magically powerful. Although, the mast would be at least a little comforting, "Maybe if we can get that ship with am mast made though...I could at least help with keeping the winds in our favor at least."
callada: (se siente bien estar aquí)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-14 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah? You have some sort of wind magic?"

To his credit, Rosinante doesn't sound the least bit sarcastic, even though he kind of feels it. He's had to adjust to the idea that most people here come from Earth, and Earth has magic, and that's just a common way to solve problems. At least it sounds helpful, having the wind under their control rather than relying on the natural force of it.

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's audible to some people, or at least his tall form is recognizable enough amidst the wreckage to get the Soldier's attention. Its lantern is back on the shore amid the ruins of the dock, since it is definitely not waterproof, but the tether is long enough for this, at least. It swims right for him, the nearest person to where it came ashore that's in need of rescuing, the only thing making it recognizable in the dark the light glinting off the metal arm.

Well, and it's voice, as it ducks under Rosinante's arm, between him and the wood he's clinging to. "Hold onto me."
callada: (the kind of mistake you never make twice)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone at all is a welcome sight, but he does indeed recognize the metal arm and feels a sort of relief. It seems no matter which world they're from, many of the various soldiers here have found themselves sticking together in tough times.

He misses Wade and Gene, still. But his head is too fuzzy right now to think more on that, which is for the best.

As he lets go of the plank to throw an arm over Soldat's back, he winces and grinds his teeth. Is his arm fractured? Broken? He vaguely remembers shielding himself in that vortex of debris to keep the collapse from doing worse, like breaking ribs but adrenaline must have dulled the pain of the hit. Still, he's had worse. He'll manage. "Okay," he huffs, mouth just barely above the water as he lacks the strength to hoist himself up higher. "Okay. Thanks."
worthallthis: (arm-curled)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
The Soldier has strength to spare, so it digs the metal fingers into he floating wood for a brief anchor, and reaches back to heft Rosinante up a little higher, arm all the way around its neck. "Hold your lantern over my head." Don't want to accidentally splash it. The Soldier hasn't experimented with what water does to these fires, yet, and doesn't want to find out what happens now. "I'll get you to shore."
callada: (beware the silent observer)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-03 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
"The sooner, the better," he says with an attempt at a smile. It's not the first time he's been injured, not the first time he's plunged overboard, and far from his first brush with death. It's not funny, but hell, now that he's over the shock of nearly drowning, there's no point being too dour about it.

The lantern will stay as high as he can reach. That's his real priority. He can hold his breath for a while if he has to, if somehow he slips back down again, or is struck by the churning debris of ferry and docks and supplies spilling out everywhere. Robin warned him that the lanterns would be put out by being doused in the lake, and that's one of the few things he'll absolutely believe from her without questioning it. Even if it's somehow not true for the others, it's probably true for him.
worthallthis: (punch)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-03 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sooner, it is. Thankfully, even despite the weight of the metal arm, the Soldier is a strong swimmer. Also, it's almost completely uninjured, just a few scrapes here and there. It does a passable breast-stroke, Rosinante on its back and legs dangling to one side, in order to keep the tall man's head and lantern above water. The metal arm makes a good shield against debris, too, so they don't get buffeted by too much en route, just the smaller pieces that it doesn't bother trying to deflect.
callada: (sit and wait a while)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The initial shock of having nearly drowned starts to fade, and although Rosinante can't really do anything beyond try to stay alert and keep the lantern raised, he does manage that at least - and the latter surely takes some effort, with every second of contact with the lake sapping more of his strength. Good thing he has lots of it to spare.

Eventually they reach shallower waters, and though he keeps leaning against the soldier for support, he manages to swing his legs underneath him and stagger forward until finally he's on dry land. He sits himself straight down, winces at the sharp jolt of pain in his back and injured arm, then sets his lantern beside him. He'll have to dry off and warm up at some point but first he needs to get his strength back. "Thanks," he finally says with deep earnesty. "Got hit hard by part of the ship, or the docks, or something. Couldn't get out on my own."

To say nothing of his actual serious problem with water, but maybe the injury explanation will be enough to divert questions.
worthallthis: (but i did it)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Lucky for you, Rosinante, the Soldier is currently all business, and is not about to start prying about why military men from planets that are mostly water don't know how to swim. For now, the Soldier just helps him sit, then crouches in front of him, ignoring how its hair and clothes are dripping now. The arm is actually streaming water from between the plates. "Where did you get hurt?" it asks. "I can set broken bones and bandage cuts if you have any."
callada: (se siente bien estar aquí)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-04 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah? Mind looking at my left arm? Figured it was better to risk it than getting hit in the chest when the docks fell apart. But there's probably a better place than here if it really needs help, and there might still be some supplies in the church."

It wasn't long ago that a full clinic was set up there, after all, and did anyone bother removing the medics' things? Not as far as he knows. It's helpful that Soldat and a few others know more than just the very basics he can manage.

It hurts badly to extend his arm so it can be examined, but he does it anyway. The pain can be seen in the slight wince at the corners of his eyes. It's not just the arm that's in bad shape, but surely his shoulder too. The impact had hit hard. And now that they're out of the water, it's much easier to see that there's a gash across his back just under that shoulder which is slowly soaking blood into his sweater. He doesn't seem to have noticed that particular injury yet.
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course." The Soldier will get to the bleeding, too. Arm first. It leaves the metal hand aside, since fine motor control isn't great while it's still leaking water, and gingerly feels along Rosinante's arm from wrist to shoulder, feeling for a break or a dislocation. Inasmuch as it hopes for things, it's going to hope for a dislocation. That takes much less time and effort to heal.

Its own lantern is close, but mostly shuttered and protected against stray splashes, so not very helpful for illuminating things-- all they have is Rosinante's light. "Where exactly were you hit?" it asks as it searches for the source of the pain.

"Uh, my arm, I don't-"

He's cut off with a sharp wince as the soldier presses against his lower forearm in his explorations, close to the elbow. His clothing may make it hard to notice, but it's swelling and bruised - a fracture, rather than a break. Rosinante is becoming acutely aware of the pain as the adrenaline subsides, and though his pain tolerance is pretty extreme, the prodding certainly draws a noticeable response.

"Right there. Must be. Shit," he hisses through his teeth.

It's not at the joint, so it's not a dislocation, and it doesn't feel like the bone is out of alignment. "It could be worse. I'll wrap it and make you a sling." The Soldier admittedly doesn't know how long anyone should wear a sling for with a broken bone. It knows some basic field medicine-- to keep handlers, targets, team members, and itself from dying before a real medic can get to them-- not long-term care.

And since its own clothing is mostly leather and kevlar, it tears off Rosinante's sleeve to get some fabric for wrapping, instead. Sorry, man, that probably hurts, and also shows some of the blood from the cut in his back. The Soldier is not really known for its bedside manner.

"Ow, damn, ask for a knife next time," he grunts between gasps, but quickly recovers while glowering slightly at his companion. The state of his injury is at least more visible now, purple and swelling and warm to the touch, but also covered with an array of old scars: some jagged, some stitched, some clean and straight.

But he does know well how to hold still despite the discomfort so that the soldier can make a simple sling. He'll find a proper doctor after. At least this will make it easier to walk around in the meantime.
