EVENT LOG: GATHER UP

EVENT LOG:
GATHER UP
characters: everyone.
location: beacon at large.
date/time: september 16-25.
content: a town-wide selfie scavenger hunt!
warnings: unflattering camera angles.
🔎📸😘
It starts with a network post, and then a song begins to play in the Invincible, loud enough to be heard throughout Bonfire Square. Welcome to the scavenger hunt, everyone! You've been tasked with finding 25 "items" in and around Beacon, so hop to it!
Please remember to ICly report your findings on Robin's network post if you want them to count toward a prize! As a further reminder, you're free to interpret the list items however you/your character would like, and you're free to assume your character can find all of these things somewhere in town without running into trouble! Just don't stray too far from town to go gallivanting off into the wilderness, as that might be dangerous. This includes finding forest spirits! You're welcome to NPC your own forest spirit encounters, just like in our last event.
That said, if you would like to search a particular area for a fun surprise, let us know below!

kol mikaelson | closed + ota
[ kol takes his reputation of being the Best Uncle Ever quite seriously. so it's within reason that he tricks hope into meeting him on the first floor of the invincible, wanting to discuss with her something that is quite startling—he thinks there's a crack in his lantern! (it's much easier to fake a crisis than to talk about the real one he's been suppressing.) but when she meets him at the bar, he has a notebook and pencils with colourful crayons (the red is missing) on hand. ]
Ah, love—you've made it! [ his smile is big and wide, something that's genuinely warm. ] I desperately need your help. [ he frowns, although it's a bit fake. looking down at the open notebook on the countertop, he turns to her. ] Can you draw?
FOR ALLIE | SOMEONE BEAUTIFUL
[ again, kol takes his requirement of ensuring to stay in the spirits' good books quite seriously. with davina gone (something he does not obsess about for the good of himself), he can't quite fulfil this particular scavenger prompt. but then he remembers allie and her golden hair, and figures, perhaps, she'll humour him.
after he texts her with the invitation to poke their noses in places they shouldn't (and to learn more about this alternate dimension theory she seems to know a lot on), he waits for her at the bonfire, this time wearing a green button up that hopefully isn't wearing him. ]
FOR ELENA | A WEB
[ this one's bound to take up quite a bit of time—time kol has plenty to spare. do spiders even exist in beacon? he hasn't heard the sounds of their tiny footsteps or the pinch of their pincers, so hopefully this one will be a struggle that'll take up a good portion of his time (and attention).
kol has nothing but himself and his lantern as he ventures into the invincible to pinch some of its food before he leaves in his web search. eying the bar, he takes a detour before he goes to the kitchen, taking his time in surveying the limited alcohol that's available. why not take a bottle and search drunk?
but it's so hard to decide on what drink to take. does he take a big bottle or a small one? does he take two or is that too greedy? he'll need to bring a bag to take some more if he truly wants to get drunk…
at the sound of footsteps, kol doesn't turn around to see who's entered. ] Bar's closed.
[ it's not. ]
OPEN | A GAME
[ who is kol to pass up the opportunity to have some fun? he has a set of dominoes he lines up on a table in the library. he has a few books by his side, but they're not for reading. today, he's going to try and build the best domino line one has ever seen and take a picture… and perhaps actually have some muggle fun.
unfortunately for kol, despite being one with precision, his impatience and need to make this the most curved domino design (it looks like he's trying to create some sort of intricate image out of its shapes) means he knocks it over. exasperatedly, (he doesn't yell), ] For fuck's sake!
[ this is the fifth time this has happened. please pity him. ]
OPEN | WILDCARD
[ if you want to rope kol into doing something with you, he's at your mercy! he's pretty much open to everything. you can hit me up @
bogans if you want to hash things out! ]
no subject
It's not a welcome one. ]
You've gotta be kidding me.
[ Does she sound tired? Exasperated? Absolutely. ]
no subject
the self-deprecation is only making him madder. he refocuses, remembering how anger had done nothing but incite the ancestors when he was in their realm.
kol doesn't react, despite very much wanting to—instead, he remains with his back mostly to her, his gaze on the alcohol before him. he waits a few intentional moments, unresponsive to her until he deems it aggravating enough.
when her turns around, he tilts his head with a purposefully confused frown. when he speaks, it's with his shit-eating smile, ] Ah—Elise, wasn't it? From Mystic Falls? I'm surprised to see you're here.
[ he's not, and he sure as hell doesn't sound it. she'll notice he has a nice haircut now. ]
no subject
Save the pleasantries, Kol. I'm too tired for your games.
[ And she is, something in her weighing her down so much that even that sharp irritation at the very sight of him isn't enough to truly ignite her ire. Instead, she walks over to the bar, keeping half her attention on the man she'd helped kill while she selects her own bottle of low-grade alcohol. Some part of her might want to rage and fight him, take out all her issues on the man who had helped try to destroy her life, but a much larger part just really wants a drink. ]
no subject
he watches her with an amused close-lipped smile, staying where he is. there's really no point in moving—she does it all for him. while he has never thought much of what would happen if he ever came face to face with elena gilbert again, he did fantasise in quite a lot of detail what he'd do to his best bud jeremy.
no point in detailing that out now. being on the other side had been tiresome and boring—something that was amplified after matt donovan had come across.
resting his hand on the top of the bar, he taps his fingers restlessly as his gaze follows her. best to keep both eyes on her. fool him once... ]
But pleasantries make this conversation much more easier to bear. [ still said with a smile and almost a skip to his stationary step. ] Would you rather I be as unpleasant as that drink you've chosen?
no subject
[ The words slip out with ease even as they fall flat even to her ears. There's no energy behind them the way there used to be, no drive or purpose behind the venom she could manage with his family. The kitten's claws have dulled with pain and she doesn't care if he knows it. She doesn't care about much at all anymore. ]
But since that doesn't seem to be an option...
[ She doesn't finish the statement, grabbing a bottle of vodka and plopping into a seat at the bar. A glass is considered for all of one second before she simply twists the cap off and takes a long drink straight from the bottle. It is not good vodka by any means, but the alcohol content is strong and that's exactly what she needs as she gives him a sidelong stare of almost contempt. ]
no subject
[ kol doesn't want to be here. he hadn't wanted to be dead the first time nor the second… and now that it's the third? he's wondering if it'll stick. (he hopes not.) where his line of thought goes, he doesn't show it. instead, he looks at her with a slight curve to his lips. ]
You don't wear death very well. [ it's an insult and it's not an insult—kol simply states it. he doesn't have to work hard with his insults these days, as pointing out were people fall short usually does the trick.
uncaring, kol moves so he's two seats away from her, resting his arm on the countertop. he doesn't sit. ] You're more pouty than usual. How did karma finally catch up with you?

Her conversation with Kol had been one of the few that hadn't left her feeling like they were all doomed. Not just because he had a natural confidence that she couldn't help but lean into, but because he didn't look at the world the same way as everyone else. It was... refreshing, after so much time spent screaming into the void and he was perhaps the only person (outside of Grizz) who could have lured her into this little game of the Keeper's. ]
Almost didn't recognize you. [ She'd been too polite to mention the
very verypoorly fitting clothes he'd had on when they'd met, but now that she knew it wasn't a fashion choice? She didn't mind poking a little fun. ]It's, ah - [ A grin playing on her lips as she pulls the sleeves down over the palms of her hands. The loose-knit sweater that hung from her slight frame, doing little to shield her from the cold. ] Quite the improvement.
no subject
[ kol mock pretends to look surprised as he peers down at himself. of course, the shirt's more fitting—and it's doomed to be destroyed later, somehow. he'd finally gotten hold of something that seemed to be made for his size. it's amazing what looking can accomplish. ]
I'm glad you came. [ he smiles when he looks up at her. at least she isn't holed up in her room, brooding about life and death. although allie doesn't strike him as the type to do that… this is all overwhelming to someone who has never died, especially someone who has never experienced that death isn't quite the end it's perceived to be. ]
Are you any good at photography? We'll need it for our nose-poking.
no subject
She is glad she came, for whatever reason he'd asked her here. ]
I'm a teenager. [ Does that not answer the question of her selfie expertise? ] I know my way around a camera phone. [ Or a tablet in this case. ]
The scavenger hunt. [ It only now fully registers why he'd asked her here and she finds herself both intrigued and surprised. Her head canting to one side as she takes him in, considering Kol in a slightly new light. ] I thought -
[ She can't answer that, however, because she doesn't know. She'd simply assumed he wanted her for something more serious, but she's still not sorry she came. ]
- I, think I can help with that.

[ his eyebrows rise and his voice pitches up, but it's not unkindly. kol's done some acting over the years—both good and bad—and this falls into the former category. he knows exactly what he wants to do and that she's capable of it, no cv or interview required. ]
The Lighthouse Keeper wants us to take a selfie with someone beautiful. [ pursing his lips, he shrugs his shoulders. ] I figure we're both reasonably attractive. Why not blind her with our beauty? Your blonde hair… my sharp jaw…
no subject
Lucky for you we're a team and not in competition.
[ He has successfully managed to draw some enthusiasm from her, however, a light dancing in her blue eyes that hasn't been seen in a long time. ]
Reasonably? [ The soft peal of laughter rising above the crackling of the bonfire. ] Are you sure that we should?
[ He's not the only one who has acted a time or two. ]
I mean, I wouldn't want to overshadow that sharp jaw of yours. [ Little by little the layers stripping away as he successfully helps to alleviate the weight she's been carrying around since New Ham. ]
no subject
although he's smiling, he tells her matter-of-factly, ] It might surprise you, but I can be quite humble.
[ ha. over the last century, he has checked the dictionary for the definition of that word so he can use it accurately. what one won't find underneath that entry is a picture of his face. ]
If that's alright by you, I figure we could give quite lot of people a run for their money. [ he holds his phone out, arm extended in front of him as if he's about to take a picture as he stands. it's all about baiting her—is her bite as good as her bark? ]

It's not all that gentle, but he can take it.]
I can't believe you freaked me out like that just to ask me to draw something. [She looks relieved, though. She takes in a deep breath before letting it out, managing to actually grin.] What's this about anyway? I mean, yeah, I can draw but I need to know what first.
no subject
In my defence, my lantern did look cracked… [ instead it's his heart. :c boo.
patting the seat beside him, he pushes the notebook toward her. she'll find he's tried to draw a spirit on the page, although it's not quite… artistic. uncle kol isn't an artist with a pencil and it's only made him grow aggravated. her presence has calmed that aggravation down. ]
Something. Anything. [ he shrugs. ] How about you and me as you remember?
[ that'd be a work of art in his humble and always correct opinion. ]
no subject
[A cracked lantern is like the worst thing that could ever happen and the last thing she needs is another family member to be close to her and then disappear on her. No thank you.
She tugs the notebook toward her, reaching for the pencil and tapping the eraser against the page as she thinks for a moment before she nods and starts to draw. The tip of the writing utensil drags gently across the page, slowly at first, then faster and faster as she starts to outline what will eventually become an actual picture.]
Are you just going to stare at me while I do this? It's not going to be done in two minutes.
no subject
[ he could. kol's watched blood dry on a wall once and found it absolutely thrilling.
taking it as his cue to look somewhere else, kol gets up off the stool and wanders a little aimlessly away from the bar. he doesn't get far—he finds a clean napkin on a table and brings it back. ]
Don't stare at me doing my origami. [ it's a joke, since he smiles and folds the square in half with precision. ]
no subject
Deal.
[The sketch starts to come together rather quickly once she properly sets her pencil to paper, tracing edges with quick precision, sneaking peeks at her uncle's face to get his profile just right.
The lines are rough when she finally pauses to examine her work so far, but the picture is there; she's young in this picture, sitting on the edge of a bed. Kol kneels in front of her, looking up to meet her eyes, as if he's asking something of her.
It's one of her first proper memories of him.]
no subject
satisfied, he leans back on his stool and looks at his creation—the swans aren't half bad, but with a little more patience, the corners could've been more precise and sharp… and even. ]
I've brought you Swan Lake.
[ he laughs. ]

fun and games
[Mary keeps forgetting she's not supposed to be swearing. Those are adult words. And they're mean. But it's so exciting to hear them, she just can't help but repeat it as she comes around the corner holding a stack of books in her arms. She appears to have quite the eclectic selection...but the dominoes are much more exciting.]
no subject
kol hears her footsteps before she speaks, turning in surprise by the language. looking at her stack of books, his gaze wanders to her. rather casually, he says, ] I knocked my bloody dominoes over before I was finished setting up.
[ again, mind you.
cocking his head up, it's with a lazy wave of his hand that he gestures toward her books. ] Doing some light reading?
no subject
[Silly, clumsy Kol. She puts her books down on the floor, out of the way.]
Reading is one of my favorites. Aren't there just so many books here? I've never seen such a nice library!
[But now her attention is focused on the dominoes, eyes wide with curiosity.]
What are you setting up? Can I help?
no subject
looking at her, he cocks his head in invitation. ] Maybe you have a better design—and more patience than me. Have you ever lined up dominoes before?
no subject
Nope! But I like to learn how to do new things. It sounds like fun! What happens when they're all lined up? It's a big picture?
no subject
[ how does one explain dominoes? kol's always expected it to be something everyone just naturally knows—like water being wet.
he grabs a handful of them and begins setting them up in a smaller scope of a design. he creates a very small squiggly line. ] Usually just a pattern—I think you'd need to be incredibly skilled and have enough dominoes to create an actual picture. But you put the tiles close enough—not too close—so that you can knock them over to start an avalanche.
[ it's with a gesture that he silently invites mary to do just that—knock them over to cause a little mess. ]
