EVENT LOG: DO YOU REALIZE? PART ONE

EVENT LOG:
DO YOU REALIZE? PART ONE
characters: everyone.
location: Bonfire Square.
date/time: August 15-17
content: the forest spirits throw a party for the town, and the lighthouse expedition heads out to reconnect the lighthouse keeper.
warnings: violence, gore, character death
enjoy yourselves while you can.
Ain't no party like a spirit distraction party cuz a spirit distraction party has an undercurrent of terror and general gritted teeth...
But! It's a still a party, so eat, drink and be merry, right? Those few, those happy few who are planned all this did their absolute best, and though their labor is mostly finished, you can still catch them adjusting things here and there. Daylight's decor is marvelous, streamers pinned in place with the themes of stars and flowers, but you can catch Daniel's more subtle work, too: look at those flower crowns! Pop one on your head, really complete that 2014 aesthetic. They're charming, honestly, if not very slightly off-putting (because there aren't many pretty flowers that grow in moonlight). If you're not into those, Daylight's also crafted up some paper hats and bowties!
There's tables set up around the bonfire and near the church, with a great deal of food placed out. It's actually decent food—lots of breads and other baked goods thanks to Ignis, and god knows the Librarian (if no one else) seems to be keenly appreciating it. There's also a bouncy house made of parachute material and repurposed gym mats, slightly janky but very much up and active. Just make sure no one peed in there before you get in (or is that limited to ball pits). There's a gacha machine in the corner, a face-painting station (or maybe it's more like a mask over there, hmm), and even a sorting game thanks to the Postmaster General. You can even participate in Clarke's scavenger hunt! There's a sense of tension in the air, but maybe you can find it in yourself to enjoy, just a little, before the expedition heads out.
Surely nothing will go wrong for them.•••
The scavenger hunt set up by the party planning committee runs through the whole weekend! Or, well, it's supposed to, but we'll get to part two of the event later. :)
In the meantime, they've hidden all kinds of items around town for characters and spirits alike to find! These items include:
- Paper crafts made by Daylight
- Baked goodies made by Ignis
- Flower crowns made by Daniel
- Glove balloons made by the Vendor (or, as we lovingly know them, the Ice Cream Crab)
- Cheese sandwiches
- Clarke's gun holster and utility belt
- Ignis' driving gloves
- Knitted accessories like scarves and headbands made by Rastus
- Rocks from the Postmaster General's personal collection
- Stamps from the library
Once your scavenger hunt list is completed, your character will receive a prize! This prize may be a delectable cake or loaf of bread baked by Ignis, getting to keep some of the less personal scavenger hunt items (you can't keep Clarke's belt but you can keep the knitted stuff from Rastus!), and even, gasp, could it be? An extra hour in the bounce house! Aren't you a lucky duck?•••
The party is quirky, to be sure, but it more than does its job. The spirits are plenty distracted in the days leading up to the expedition, happily making nice with all of the partygoers, and it even holds their collective attention after the expedition quietly excuses themselves from the festivities on Saturday! Even though their exit is marked by a song playing in all the shops and buildings around town. Hm!
The partygoers are left to wait with bated breath as the expedition heads out, but the following plan has circulated through town so that everyone knows what to expect:
Winters' group, comprised of Rosinante, Peter, Riku, and Five will collect the cables from the church and head out for the lighthouse. Jason, Vanitas, Elden, and Hope set out behind them to serve as an extra line of defense just in case any forest spirits try to attack the lighthouse crew from behind. Elden has also offered a spell buff to both Winters and Peter, allowing them to move more easily through the forest and potentially escape the grasp of any hostile spirits. Meanwhile, the rest of the town's defenders will stay close to the party, with Sora and Ambrose maintaining the party's perimeter while Wanda and Eleven stay a little further out to maximize their range.
Then comes the lookout groups. Pikachu, Jesse, Jon, and Will will station themselves along the barbed wire fence that separates the town from the lighthouse peninsula. They'll be keeping an eye out for any forest spirit activity to let the groups beyond the fence know what to expect. The rest of the lookouts will divide into pairs—Arya and Davina as one pair, and Jo and "Dawn" as the other—and venture past the fence to bring up the rear behind the groups heading to the lighthouse.
There's a lot of wheels in motion here, so if you're more of the visual set, here's a handy map for you to reference. And, hey, there's a lot of people out past the fence, huh? But there's a lot of difficult terrain to cover and that area of the forest has been proven to be particularly deadly. All this backup can only lead to good things.
Or so we hope, anyway. Stay tuned for part two of the event to see how these ventures go!

THE PARTY NPCS
The Librarian and Gacha Machine
At some point, you may see the Postmaster General trailing behind them. For the most part, the Librarian ignores them: not cruelly, but there's more important shit to do! Sooner or later they peel off to run their own mail sorting station, which is good, because the Librarian is too busy minding everyone else's business. Only once everything is set do they wander off to mind the little machine in back . . .
It's a rusty old thing, half-broken, but functional enough. Watch long enough and you’ll get to see one of the spirits head towards it-- oh, it’s the Postmaster General. It’s nice to see them again, isn’t it? They're definitely not coming by just to hover around the Librarian.
They stroke the machine once, twice, with those long, spindly fingers, and sigh in contentment as it lights up. Gripping an acorn in their left hand, they push it firmly against the coin slot-- and lo and behold, the coin slot warps, widens, and accepts the offering with a particularly unpleasant sucking sound. The entire thing plays a choice tune, spits out a card, and goes silent.
The Postmaster General huffs. Stares at the card for a while. And then, with another huff, grabs the rusty pen nearby (chained to the machine, don't steal it) and scribbles a few pictures. They feed the card back in, and the entire machine plays another tune as it spits out a prize. What is it? Ah, but that’s for them to know. Make an offering and answer your own riddle to get a prize!]

The Two-Step King;
Most of the spirits stare over at them at least once, but how can't they: the spirit keeps bellowing out commands and what sound like . . . spells? Hmm. The other spirits aren't concerned, though, so you probably shouldn't be. Just enjoy the sight of a spirit gripping a bottle of wine and gesturing with it like it's a pointer-- and when they inevitably bellow at you, perhaps you should listen.
Oh. They're gesturing emphatically. Trying to tell you to go on your knees? Hm. That seems . . . strange, but it's ultimately up to you if you do it. After all: this spirit seems important. It might be they're one of the big ones you gotta distract.]
this is going to end swimmingly I'm sure

The Vendor and DIY Spirit Masks
You can't help but notice something else, however! It looks like beside the Vendor is...a crafting table? Specifically, the materials that are provided on top of it all appear to be meant to fashion yourself your very own Spirit Mask! The masks are hardly more than plain paper plates and a bit of string, but it's a cute idea, right? Maybe it'll make it easier for you to mingle with the forest spirits without things being quite so awkward.
These simple masks are more than they appear on the surface. It seems that they've been enchanted to help promote good relations between the party-goers, so anyone who dons one of their self-made masks will discover they've been glamoured to appear as a forest spirit themselves! Although they don't feel or perceive any physical changes to their body, everyone around them, forest spirit and lantern-carrier alike, will see them as your choice of creature from the wood.]
You ever just uhhhhhhhhhhh dissociate?

sora | party & defense, pre-mission
[This is the kind of thing he should love. Sora's always enjoyed meeting other people, even if the earliest years of his life had been all about routine. He's never been shy, and his easy-going nature has always made him quick to introduce himself or worst- one of the first to end up on the dancefloor embarrassing himself.
It's hard to feel that way now.
He's been in the woods for awhile, asking after a friend. But the moment his thoughts go to her it feels like he can't breathe around them. Sora smiles when he gets caught looking at some of the others, but he's also quick to turn his watery eyes away. They're at a party after all and they're supposed to be making sure that the spirits have a good time. He waves in the direction of the faces he recognizes and allows himself to be carried along by the curious spirits making their way from table to table. It's the reason he ends up standing where he does, torn between the paper hats and the flower crowns. His head isn't big enough for both, so.]
Which one do you think?
[He's crouching down to ask some of the nearby spirits, putting a hat on with one hand and then a crown on with the other.] This one? Or this?
[But it looks like reviews are mixed, because as soon as he pleases one he manages to displease another.] Actually... maybe we should get a referee...
let them eat cake
[Sora's eyes are closed. Sora's eyes are closed and his hands are full of little cakes and treats that he can't possibly name, but they's so good that it looks like he's having a religious experience.
By this point he's managed to collect a bow-tie, a pair of knitted mittens, a flower crown, and a face full of paint- but he might as well have reached nirvana. He stands near the snack table and takes his time chewing through them, having forgone cutlery altogether.] I know we're supposed to be doing a scavenger hunt-
But do you think anybody would notice if I put a bunch of these in my pockets?
it's the final countdownnnnnn
[Subterfuge has never been his strong suit. For better or worse Sora has always been direct and honest in his dealings with others, as if speaking from the heart were a language entirely its own. It's not like he's never told a lie before, but he knows even before they all head out that his feelings are mixed.
He's worried about the people heading to the lighthouse and what they might find there, what could happen. He's worried about the way they're preparing to fight when his idea of the forest spirits has begun to change so dramatically. It's a knot in the pit of his stomach, and though he doesn't say anything, he takes the few moments before they all start to head their separate ways to look for his friends- to offer words of encouragement and ask them to stay safe.]
Let them eat cake; because their entire friendship is based on food
[Honestly, Noctis couldn't even blame Sora. He got to eat stuff like this every single day and even he was contemplating how he could get away with swiping some of it.]
If you want I could ask Ignis to make extra next time. So you don't have to eat it out of your pockets.
i love that this is just, their Thing now
One day he'll invite you to dinner Sora - you can even bring discount him
final countdowwwwnnnnnn
he places the last bullet in the clip, satisfied with them and grabs them from in front of him.
it's then he looks up at Sora, suspicious.]

he's gonna threaten her with a good time
[Her own mask hangs by a string from her fingers. She knows they're more than they appear to be, or at least she's seen others put them on, but still. It's hard not to feel like a twerp when you've got a paper plate strapped to your face.]
But the crown might last longer.
look she could use a little threatening with that lets be honest
tbh yes?

Ignis Scientia | FFXV | OTA
[Ignis can only hope that nothing goes wrong during this party. They have worked hard on it and he can't remember the last time he baked this many breads and pastries. There are bagels, pies, croissants, breadsticks, pretzels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and cookies spread over the tables. The last time he baked this much was when he arrived and when he couldn't get a grip of himself. For youngsters, there is a delicious wildberry fruit punch. For older folk, there's wildberry punch- with a kick of a rum. He's been saving the bottle he found in the General store just for this.
He's currently making sure that there are enough plates and cups on each table. Picking up a stack, he turns to the nearest person that is next to him.]
Apologies, could you lend me a hand and bring these over to the tables next to the bonfire?
2. Scavenger Hunt
[When the hunt for missing items starts, Ignis gets a small smile on his face. The spirits look so eager about the game, scurrying all around to find the items. He had hidden his gloves in a tree, one glove on each branch separately, making it a bit of a challenge. Of course, everyone's allowed to hunt, but you should probably up your game if you don't want to lose to forest spirits.
Ignis will be waiting by the bonfire, this time dressed somewhat formally. He's lacking his suit jacket but it's hot night. He'll be sipping on a drink and waiting for those that are in the hunt to come over and hand him over his gloves. A cake is a prize, after all, you want to be doing that. Right?
If you are not part of the hunt though, you can definitively join him for a drink and a chat. He needs a bit of respite.]
3. The Song
[When the song starts going off, Ignis can see that a lot of spirits are getting confused and overly curious. With the plan going on this far, it would be bad if the song just ruined everything.
Ignis is not a dancer. The only thing he can dance are ballroom dances. But for the sake of everything they've acomplished so far, he'll... he'll do it.
There's a group of forest spirits gathering around one of the spots, as if ready to make a run for the forest, when Ignis steps up to the person nearby, catching their attention instantly. And how wouldn't he? He does a little bow and offers a hand, a polite smile on his face.]
Fancy a dance?
[It hurts to say that, but it works. The spirts nearby take that as a sign to start dancing themselves and well... their dancing just ends up being spinning in circles. Good enough for Ignis.]
4. Wildcard
[ooc: Anything else you wanna do with Ignis? Poke me/add me
3.
It had been drilled into his head just like everything else he'd ever been taught. Memorized through repetition until he could do it in his sleep.
A prince must be able to dance and entertain guest.
Only it had never actually come in handy until right now. Right this moment.
Honestly he's more concerned with that fact that the spirits seem upset. For some reason, he's grown especially fond of them.
But then something catches his attention. His focus. And he knows it's Ignis even before he turns to glance at him. Knows because he's entirely used to having his presence beside him.
The bow is almost formal, and he wants to hiss out something about how they're at a janky party where the decorations are made out of surgical gloves and there's a bounce house created from gym mats and not some formal affair at the Citadel. That he's not actually king here and Ignis doesn't need to bow.
But Ignis Scientia was many things. A dancer was not one of them.
Which leaves Noctis with absolutely no choice but to save him from embarrassment and actually agree.
So he takes his hand, let's himself be led out to a more open space. At least he'll be able to lead in this.]

Daylight | Original | Party & OTA
Oh man oh man oh man-
[ it's only a few hours - perhaps even minutes!! - before the party begins and daylight is still working on making sure the decorations and the placements of said decorations are just right. and though he's used to being pretty speedy and quick for these sort of things, even he admits that, sometimes, two heads are better than one. at the very least? it'll be nice to have one more pair of hands putting up his streamers and setting up his confetti centrepieces.
which is why this will be the exact moment he looks up and just happens to make eye contact with someone. cue daylight looking sweet and innocent as possible, complete with little wiggles to the back of his jetpack winglets. ]
Hey there! Mind if you can give me a hand?
iia;; 'till you walk in. (normal form option.)
[ daylight is in his element as the party begins and soon enters into the swing of things. always one to be sociable and bubbly, he makes it a point to greet everyone who enters the party grounds and suggests a free table for them to sit. he's always quick to point out that partyware is up for grabs, in the form of paper hats and bowties or flower crowns. (if asked for his opinion, he seriously goes, 'flower crowns, every time.')
he soon begins making his rounds to make sure everyone is having a good time and is in good spirits. it's kind of hard to not bump into something or someone due to his size but, by the dust and rust, does he try to make sure he doesn't kill the mood with his height. ]
-Are you having a good time so far? [ he notices someone by themselves and is quick to make his way to them, a big smile on his face and an earnest twinkle in his optics. ] Need a hand? Need a drink?

Which is, like, a super big compliment, I swear- She wasn't the biggest social butterfly so only really cool totally awesome parties got her to dance a bit.

Lunafreya Nox Fleuret | Final Fantasy XV | ota
[ Lunafreya's not been to many parties. Sure, she'd been dragged to some of the balls and other events that the Niflheim Empire had thrown or forced her into going, but it wasn't like she'd wanted to be there. Those were usually drab, dull affairs full of military higher ups and dignitaries looking to rub elbows with the Oracle and be in good standing with her. And she'd have to play nice, because that was her role, after all.
But this is far different. It's smaller, the atmosphere is far warmer despite the darkness and circumstances. There's no pomp and circumstance here, it's just people and decorations and... well. Luna loves this.
She can be found looking at all of the decorations, a small, content smile on her face as she lifts up one of those flower crowns and inspects it. It's at this point, she turns to whomever is standing closest to her. ]
Do you think that other flowers could grow here? Or rather, what sorts of flowers could those be? Surely there are blooms that only grow under the light of the moon.
[ Sorry... she's a bit of a flower connoisseur. ]
[ B; What goes up... ]
[ Lunafreya is, outwardly, a very dignified looking woman. She is strong, charismatic, she handles herself very well under pressure. So right now, she is probably the picture of ridiculousness, what with a flower crown on her head and a bagel, courtesy of Ignis, in her hand.
She's paused directly outside of the bouncy house, head tipped to the side in consideration. This thing is one giant safety hazard, an accident waiting to happen. This is not something that anyone, let alone a lady of her stature and position, should ever be caught
literallydead in.It's probably a good thing she doesn't care, because she's slipping out of her heels and crawling into the bouncy house, flower crown and bagel in tow.
This is what happens when you don't have a normal childhood, clearly. Come bounce with her! ]
[ C; Scavenging the Scavenger Hunt! ]
[ Like the bouncy house, this is a first for Luna. She's got her little list of items in hand, and she is meticulously looking for things. Not that it's very hard, of course; everything seems to be pretty close together. But she wants to make sure that she's got everything checked over.
Which is what brings her to you. Yes, you, with the cheese sandwich! ]
Pardon me... that is a cheese sandwich, yes?
[ That's it. That's all you get, because she's getting ready to check it off of her list... ]
[ D; Wildcard! ]
[ Anything else you want to do that I don't have listed here? Go for it! ]
A
There is a plant native to my land, its name is laohuo teng. [somehow that doesn't really translate, huh] It only blooms at night. The flowers are quite beautiful, I managed to keep one in my garden because my wife loved its flowers so.
[he huffs a sort of vague laugh under his breath] Where one would find such a thing in this place, who knows. Unless dead flowers can pass into this world the way dead people do.

Cao Pi | all party all the time | OTA
Whenever he's out there, playing his role, being the charmer, he has a glass of wine in hand. Only wine, thanks, he's not ready for the stronger liquor yet. If you can top him off, please do - a party host always looks more capable when his glass isn't empty.
Ask him what he's drinking. Offer him a snack. Try to put a party hat on him I dare you. Do literally whatever with him, he's amenable to drinking and dancing but maybe not arts and crafts so much. It's worth a try but it might end badly. Or hilariously.
Alternately, there may be a moment when he looks around to be sure no forest spirits are in hearing range before turning and sighing to the nearest person who looks like they'd be interested in talking sass with him.]
...I get that they don't need to sleep or do other things but really. How long can they keep this up?
no subject
Considering how long humans can party without sleep? A lot longer. ( Matt can't say he blames the Spirits, the world they live in is dark and bleak and even with the tense undercurrent, it's hard not to want a positive change of pace. ) Do you think it would offend them if we tried to sleep?

Coraline Li | Original Character | OTA
[ Coraline traverses the party with an air of palpable tension surrounding her. Not just metaphorically, but also literally as a particularly keen eye may notice the fine mist of shadow roiling around her. In short, she’s fucking nervous. Nervous about being around so many strangers, nervous about the spirits, and of course, nervous about what’s to come.
So, she helps, spending the majority of the time cleaning up after the more rambunctious party goers and running small errands as necessary. But maybe someone can help her relax a bit. Maybe you! ]

( it feels like it's been years since ambrose last enjoyed a party without anything hanging over his head. and while there is plenty hanging over his head right now, there's little he can do about being dead. he can't resurrect himself so might as well enjoy what he can.
at any point during the evening, you can find him with a drink in his hand, always full. that doesn't mean he's not drinking (he is) but he makes sure to always have a glass with him so he can drink whenever he thinks of something that's bound to make him melancholy.
he's gregarious and jovial, flitting here and there to talk to people and slinging arms around shoulders when he realizes he knows the person. )
▶ SCAVENGERS 'R US
( the promise of a prize is enough to get ambrose to participate in the scavenger hunt. and he's almost immediately stumbles upon a few cheese sandwiches once he starts looking.
that's lucky, right? just a few more items from the list to go. so, catch him wandering around, using magic to move things aside to try and find other things.
all while holding cheese sandwiches. )
▶ WILDCARD
( hit me up at
scavengers!
[ he motions at all of the cheese sandwiches that ambrose has taken for himself. honestly, he just wants to see what he'll say.
though they were good enough that he would consider eating another one. ]

javert | ota
( If the purpose of this party is to distract the forest spirits, Javert isn't even trying at all. Instead of mingling with the partygoers, he lingers at the edge of the celebration, not speaking to anyone and not taking part in any of the games or festivities. He just surveys the crowd for several minutes, his face cold and stern, before turning on his heel and going back into town. When he returns, it's only for a few moments at a time, before slinking back into the shadows and disappearing again.
He looks so out of place, standing rigid and military-like, his arms crossed over his chest to make himself look as unapproachable as possible. At some point, someone manages to sneak a flower crown on his head. To make him look more festive!, they say. Javert only scowls and snatches the thing off his head, looking around for a moment before thrusting it at the nearest person. )
I do not want it.

[ daylight is quick to grab the flower crown before it falls to the ground, the crown almost slipping through his fingers with how sudden the action is and how his avaform isn't quite equipped for moments like these yet.
he does manage to grab it and, on a whim, put it on his hel- on his head, despite the fact he already has a flower crown and hat on. ] Not your style, mister? Colour? Preferred flowers?

Will Ingram | prior to expedition, OTA
Maybe you should tell him how un-fun he's being, or suggest he stop fidgeting so much. At this rate, the spirits are going to figure out something's up. Unless, of course, they're just used to him by now.]

[he's just going to say that as he's partaking in a delicious cookie, looking absolutely, completely untroubled. at least in front of the guests.
but he's also hanging out on the edge of things.]

Jo Harvelle | OTA
She attends the party happily, a smile on her face as she weaves in and out of the crowd. At some point, she picks up one of the paper crowns to wear. She doesn't decide to join the scavenger hunt, though if people ask she points them to something she's seen around.]
Having fun? I guess the party never needs to stop if the morning never comes.
[She slips away stealthily enough on the last day, heading to join the expedition. There's work to be done.]

[He falls into step behind her. Or rather...he tries...but its about four steps of his for every one of hers. Regardless he's happy to see her.]
