INTRO LOG: SEPTEMBER

INTRO LOG: SEPTEMBER
BRIGHT STARS BURNING

characters: everyone.
location: all over beacon!
date/time: the first part of september.
content: new folks, old folks, new things, dead things.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

The first thing you're aware of as you come to is the glow of a lantern, just within reach. Hazily, you start to recall the events leading up to your arrival. You died, somehow, but how does that equate to you being wherever you are?

A few answers can be found if you pick up and look through the tablet that's settled right beside the lantern. Some of the information is a little out of date at this point, but the most important details are still there: yes, you're really dead, keep your lantern close, and watch out for the spirits. You might notice mention of a ferry, but that's odd, considering you're half-submerged in water with no boat of any kind nearby.

And why does the water smell like you just walked into a Starbucks on the first day of pumpkin spice season? Boy, that's not coming out of your hair any time soon either.

Leaving where you are and using the provided map on the tablet will help you find your way to town, and along the way you might find some out of place items, like crates of food or toiletries or clothing. Feel free to grab what you find as you make your way there, your new neighbors are sure to appreciate it.

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. It's still a little messed up (maybe someone might want to record a new message?), it has plenty of important information to share. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records that were thankfully saved from the bad storm a few months ago. If that's not enough, there's many long-time residents of Beacon that will be happy to share how things go around here. If not in person, network works too.

muffins!

In addition to the potent scent of pumpkin spice, during the first few days of September you will occasionally be able to detect the aroma of baked goods in the air. It seems the case of pumpkin spice flavoring was brought in for a reason, and that reason becomes clear when baskets of muffins start appearing at the doorsteps of buildings (even those that have been damaged and/or abandoned) and in front of occupied room doors. Some of these baskets contain flavors that are more unique than others and the baskets look a little haphazardly put together, but there was clear thought put into the gesture. You may notice a spirit lurking out of the corner of your eye, trying to hide behind a tree or in a doorway or behind furniture - don't worry, they just want to make sure you got your basket!

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to The Next Night! We're so glad to have you with us, both new and old. For a run-down on what's upcoming in September, please see the September gameplan, or check the calendar for a quick overview!

As a reminder, things like newcomer arrivals, item deliveries, and lantern repair all depend on the help of the characters in the game! If your character would be interested in assisting with the equipment at Dr. Solis' Lab in any way, please let us know!

DELIVERIES

The item request crew at the lab has always tried their best, they really have. The things people request often come in pretty close to what they had asked for, and lately they've struggled to get the things landed neatly in one place but at least they've always arrived somewhere. Maybe it's the shifting of the seasons, maybe it's pure bad luck, but it seems that they've struggled in a new way this time. Everything has landed in the harbor and is quickly sinking. Worse (or better?) is that among the supplies seems to have been an enormous pallet of boxed pumpkin spice mix which exploded on impact. Everything, including the water of the lake, tastes and smells strongly of pumpkin spice. Festive!

The following can be found, one way or another:

  • The monthly store restock, which provides enough food, general sundry items, and basic supplies to comfortably last the group a month. You can check what kind of items to expect in a monthly restock here.

  • For Inspector Javert: an abundance of high-quality pistol ammunition, including a bonus box of armor-piercing rounds; plenty of tools and supplies for a very nice kitchen including some polished granite countertop slabs, exotic dark hardwood panels and beams, a professional baking oven that stands floor to ceiling, and more, plus three large wheeled carts to help carry everything.

  • For Cao Pi: a high-quality silk bathrobe, a very casual robe, and a travel guide to the Chinese city of Fenghuang, circa 1995.

If you submitted an item request last month and we've missed it here, let us know!

IT'S THE BOY!! IT'S SOLDAT!! its THEM !!!

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-09-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Or you could just give 'em to me, I'll eat anything." He flashes a toothy grin at Soldat through his half-chewed muffin... that is immediately stolen by that sneaky metal hand. Hey!

"Hey!" Sora makes a swipe for it, and to his credit, he manages to get a finger on Soldat's hand. Sora grumbles, not entirely sure if Soldat was going that slow just to see if Sora could keep up. "No fair. You got so many and I just got the one."

so excite :D

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-09-30 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Now they smile, and offer the half-eaten muffin blithely back once Sora stops grabbing for it, and only then. "Just keeping you on your toes," they say. "And I'm not making you eat shit with too much salt or that gets burned or something, c'mon kid."

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-09-30 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is a ridiculous game of keep away, and Sora knows it, but he can't help but 100% try and get that darn thing back before settling down with a grumpy huff... and then taking the muffin back sheepishly when proffered. It's food. Sora is not going to turn down food.

He almost goes to jam the whole damn thing in his mouth before thinking better of it. More mouthspace means more complain-space. "I'm so on my toes I feel like a ballerina," he grumbles, turning the muffin around in his hands instead. "That'll burn off anything, salty or no. Anyway, you're good at baking, I bet it won't be bad."
worthallthis: (eyeroll)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-09-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm good at cooking. Baking is. Harder," they admit. "Dough is very weird, you know?" They have yet to get the hang of actually kneading. Mixers all the way, here, and then begging Misty or Pudding to help if kneading is necessary. It's weird having a purely physical thing that they can't master, actually.

"Squishy," Sora agrees. "And there are times when it's not supposed to be squishy. You gotta be careful with it. You don't have to be careful with, I dunno, soup."

Sora gets on the nearest surface, probably a table! He is careful not to put his shoes on it (this time - he'll probably forget next time.) "What kind of weird are you talking about, though? Something different from my weird?"

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-09-30 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know. Probably not. Your world and mine. Not that different, really." They nudge him over a little with a single metal finger poke to the thigh, so they can get to a cabinet under his dangling legs, in the kitchen of the Invincible working on lunch while they munch. "The mixing and the kneading. I tried making bread once. Never again, not without help. Dough between the plates is worse than dirt."

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-09-30 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sora sticks his legs out to the side obediently, very obviously poking his nose into whatever Soldat's doing. "Oh, so it's more of a mess than it is hard to make." He thinks for a moment! "I could do the kneading part for you? You know me." He flexes. He's marginally less noodly than before, but he's never gonna not be small. It's very cheesy no matter how much muscle he fails to put on, though.

They're getting pans out, for now. Looks like probably either lasagna or some kind of casserole, from the shape they're separating out. "That's an idea. With you at the house." They flash him a warm smile, that's such a nice thing, now having all their favorite people in one place. "That will be easier. Even if I worry it might break those skinny little arms."

The last is clearly teasing.

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-09-30 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sora is still mystified by whatever Soldat's making, but at this point, the mystery's half the fun, especially when he knows he's gonna like whatever it is. He pulls his knees up so that they can get a better angle on whatever they're getting out of there, then drops his legs down rather unceremoniously again, watching them happily as he leans back on his palms.

He makes kind of an ugly face at them at the last bit. Teasing or not, this is indeed the song and dance, and he kind of relishes the attention. "Nothing's broke 'em yet." He knocks on a wooden cabinet. "And anyway, it's not like I'd be doing anything different. I'll just be around a lot more to help you with dough."

He opens his mouth, and then closes it, reconsidering what he was going to say. "Maybe I'll just spend the extra time figuring out how to prank you better," is what he chooses to say instead, punctuating it with a grin.
worthallthis: (lookback-sarge)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-09-30 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
"I look forward to seeing what you come up with," Soldat says mock-solemnly, setting the pans aside and rummaging around in the pantry-room just to one side for ingredients. The noodles they come back with are clearly casserole noodles rather than lasagna noodles, at least. "Want to fill a pot with water for me, kid?"

When that's on the boil, and Soldat is working on chopping things, they ask, "You're doing all right at the house, yeah? Not too crowded or anything?"
arsarcanum: (pic#13739778)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-10-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
With a very cheerfully affirmative grunt, Sora slips off his perch and rummages in the cabinets himself, eventually revealing the proper pot for the noodles in question. (He is a very good noodle matcher!)

He's turning on the stove for the pot and automatically looking around for plates and forks for placing when Soldat asks the question. "Yeah. It's a lot better, actually. People were coming and going a lot, and I was just staying there because... I guess I just didn't want to go." He shakes his head. "I should have moved in a lot sooner. I don't like being alone. You're kinda like that too, right?"
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-10-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Being alone is awful," Soldat agrees with a kind of gentle fervor. "I should have pushed more, too. I'm glad you came." After Javert had moved in and there was just one bedroom left, it really seemed like it needed to happen, if just to complete the little family of people Soldat needed to keep close. But it had taken some prodding before Sora finally agreed.

They should have prodded harder. Sora shouldn't have been so alone out there, for so long, at the Landmark.
arsarcanum: (pic#13784118)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-10-01 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they should have prodded a little harder, but Sora would have refused equally as gently. He's had some processing to do.

The majority of said processing has taken place, though, so he just scratches the back of his head. "It would have made this summer a lot easier, just knowing where you'd be and not knowing what was going on a lot of the time. It makes a lot of sense, especially after the whole Helix Station thing. I feel like I haven't been able to help as much because I wasn't close enough." He pauses, looking for napkins. "Gonna have to change my patrol route now, though."
worthallthis: (smilehappy)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-10-03 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Soldat passes by him on the way to the fridge, and pauses to reach over and take his wrist in the flesh hand, giving it a warm grasp and a fond little shake. "Only if you want to. Downtown ain't that far. Unless it's snowing or something."
