EVENT CONCLUSION: BEYOND THE SEA

EVENT LOG:
BEYOND THE SEA

characters: everyone!!
location: in the helix station under the lake, and back to the surface! (hopefully)
date/time: july 19th ish
content: After successfully exploring the Helix Station, characters have all they need to deal with the world eater stuck in the portal down below. How are they going to do it? Click and find out!
warnings: injury, body horror, monster horror, blood, maiming, you know, the usual

game plan.
Based on the votes, the consensus is quite clear: it's time to see if a creature that can destroy worlds can be killed. Characters are well armed from the finds in the test lab. Having recovered Weaver from the R&D wing, they have her assistance in attempting to use the MK VIII to assist with this task. The Key Extraction group found strong potions that might help to pacify the creature long enough to fight it. They have all they can hope to in this impossible fight — the idea is simple. Open the doors, distract the monster with brute force and attempt to pacify it with the narcotics they've recovered, while Weaver does what she can to get the drone restarted and hopefully in place for a killing blow.

If things go badly, though, the team has all agreed on a Plan B. If the tides start to turn, then the group will finish what Alastair started and shunt that bad boy back into space. It's not possible for them to change the trajectory, the World Eater will end up back where it started. However, it won't be in their lake anymore, so that's still some sort of a win. As Weaver is controlling the drone remotely, she will be the one in the control room, and will run the reversal routine if the attack begins to fail. Cao Pi is in charge of the radio to call if things start going south. Hopefully someone taught him how to use it!

boss battle.
Javert, Fitz, and Law (armed with a key Weaver provided him), with a coordinated use of the lockdown keys, manage to open the Portal Bay. Even with power restored, it is practically pitch dark in the room. It's as if the World Eater trapped in the portal manages to suck in and contain any light that dares get too close. They can hardly see the monster before they brave entering the room, though as they walk deeper into the darkness the group can see its shadowy form lodged in the portal. It's trapped around the torso, with only a small part of it visible to the group. Impossibly huge, and perhaps somewhat reminiscent of something that might have resembled a green eyed spirit, once, though it has started growing new extremities and limbs, as well as a few more sets of eyes. It rouses as they enter, and just looking at the World Eater manages to send an unspeakable wave of unease, anxiety, and hopelessness through the group.

Gregor, Stone and Jill throw the fragile bottles of sedative. They crack and settle on the skin and wide empty eyes of the monster. While it's clear it did not incapacitate the World Eater, the mental effects lessen and its movements seem to slow.

With that, it's a free for all, all members of the party armed to the teeth and determined to fight for all they have. The weapons recovered by Cao Pi, Link, and Reiju prove especially useful, though as they cut and slash, the World Eater seems to recover new limbs, new tendrils, seem to generate at random. Like a hydra, every piece they cut down seems to restore itself. Braving closer to its torso leaves the creature leaking toxic black blood over the floor. Touching it proves it is bitterly caustic, easily burning through rubber and clothing and flesh alike. It's a bitter, ugly battle, and not without damage to the fighters themselves.

The fight seems doomed to fail, even with the World Eater slowed and mostly immobilized. It's more than just slashes, heavy hits that can send bodies flying across the room. A flash of attention can leave an attacker immobilized, dark swirling terror clawing through them strong enough that they might try to hurt themselves or their company instead of the monster itself. Worse yet, any time the World Eater seems to lull, it seems to draw the living energy from any lantern nearby, rousing itself and dampening the fighter that might have been feverishly fighting a second before.

However, with the distraction provided, Weaver successfully reactivates the MK VIII. It sounds much like a giant sized bumble bee, until it rockets through the air toward the monster. The beast manages to swat the drone away, once, and for a moment all hope seems to be lost. Until the device lurches in the air and zooms right back to its task, landing on the monstrosity and scuttling deftly over the surface of the World Eater in attempt to find a weak spot. The battle swells, attempting to keep the World Eater from clawing the drone from its body before the drone has a chance to work properly.

It feels as if it takes hours for the drone to locate a weak point, though the reality is it doesn't take much longer than a handful of minutes. The sickening churn of flesh, bone and blood resonates in the room as the drone buries successfully inside the monster. Those lingering for the fight aren't spared, as even as the device whirls inside of it, the World Eater keeps up the fight, reaching for and lashing out at whoever remains close enough. There's no running for cover, as the fight rages until the very last.

There's no warning for when it happens. The World Eater cries out, a terrifying bellow that echoes throughout the station. With the cry comes a flash of bold light, brighter than any of them have seen since arriving in Beacon. The light builds, pushes outward, and the explosion deafens suddenly and completely. The room is bathed in light and anyone in the Portal Room is thrown to the sidelines, bouncing like ragdolls off the sturdy metal walls. The implosion paired with the light existing inside the creature floods through the room, likely to leave characters blinded and deafened for a few seconds after.

However, as they come to their senses, they find the World Eater felled, lying in multiple bloody burnt pieces. Troubling, some of them do seem to keep twitching and moving. Still, it seems to be over. The fight was not without consequences, and certainly not won easily, but it was won all the same.

return to the surface.

With the beast felled, and the party much worse for the wear, the group collects back in the submarines which have thankfully had a chance to charge this time around. The ride isn't exactly fun, but there's no alarm messages or rides in pitch darkness, at least. Even if there's still a good chance that characters might suffer decompression sickness, dizziness, queasiness, and headaches as they head back topside.

It's a battered and bruised group that makes it back to the docks. Plenty will need medical attention, and there might even be some with broken lanterns that will need to be taken to the lab and repaired immediately. Those that died in the fight will awaken in 3 days, however, there might be some consequences when they revive.

Those that are in better shape have a lot to share. What they've seen, what happened, and what should happen next. They've had a rough go of it, characters on the surface have their own oddities to share, too. There's a new guy in town, after all... And boy does he have some ideas and opinions.

ooc notes.

For refreshers on the first part of this event, please see the first event post! The results of this event are based on the voting found here. If your character was involved in the portal room fight, we have provided a comment for injury rolls here. If your character died in the fight, please head over to the Death Page to report it. Thanks for taking part in the first major event of our Next Night! It was quite a ride but we hope you had as much fun as we did!

Feel free to use this post for action tags set during the fight, as well as meeting up and sharing information with the others topside. As of this event, new NPC Weaver will be ashore with her submarine to offer her aide to the residents of Beacon after their help with the Helix Station. Keep an eye out for more from her soon! She will be staying at the docks in a submarine. If anyone has a cot a bunny can borrow, hit a girl up...

Not just here, [ he sighs, because as glad as he is that cora-san is as stubborn as he is — law wouldn't be alive otherwise — it's... kind of a problem, too.

cora-san is dead because of his stubbornness, too.

he isn't exactly keen on sharing life stories, or much about himself in general, but talking serves as a good distraction as he starts to sew elektra's arm back together, and some here have seen cora's memories, anyway... they already know about it.

so he says, quiet, with just an edge of fondness creeping through,
] He saved my life. Without him, I would have died thirteen years ago.

im sorry he's such a gremlin

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-08-03 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Your head looks terrible, [ he says after a pause, and there's something that could be classified as real concern in his eyes... before it turns into interest.

hm, this should be more fun than elektra's arm.
]

It's not just the bleeding, either. Patching this up is going to hurt, [ he says, matter-of-fact, without any apologies. ] Someone is going to have to watch you the way back up, too. I don't even need to scan you to know that will leave a concussion.

[ the question is... is that all it'll leave? her brain's taken quite a beating, with her head having been hit this hard.

... if nothing else, from his manner, it's probably obvious he knows what he's talking about.
]

... other side-effects may appear, too. Do you know where we are?

Soldat-ya informed me.

[ it's a rather laconic explanation... besides, he'd seen him dead, back there. that alone would have made him aware of the guy's identity, even if soldat hadn't talked about him before that.

he takes a seat next to matt, and with a flick of his fingers, there's a cup of coffee right in front of him — keeping room up at nearly all times, now, is rather convenient.
]

Law Trafalgar. I'm a doctor.

[ normally, he wouldn't bother to add that... but considering what he's here for, it's rather relevant. ]

"As long as it's dead... who cares," he mutters, because honestly — he has no complex to have to be in every fight. They've reached their goal, and Cora-san is alive, that's all he cares about.

"Not yet. Now that it's over... there's bound to be others who're hurt. If it's not bad, someone else can check them. Soldat-ya knows enough first aid. But if it's bad enough, they could die before they're treated." And he's uncomfortably aware of the fact that he's the only one with actual decent medical expertise there. If he goes and passes out for a couple of days, now...

"Help me with that, first. Then the submarine." It could be a request, but it's really not — he's doing this regardless. He's not about to keel over and die just yet, even if he probably can't walk on his own, like this.

He does... neither, really, choosing a third option and ignoring the plate's existence for now.

"No, because Cora-san polite," Law responds flatly — it's true, too. Cora-san actually cares about people, and what they think. Law... not so much.

With his eyebrow raised, "It could mean mister... but it could also mean hey you."

Do with that information what you will... or probably more with the fact that he actually calls Rosinante Cora-san, the only actually polite way of address he has in his vocabulary.

"You'll overexert yourself," he replies quickly, brow creasing with concern. Yes, he wants to help Law with this, but he doesn't want Law to kill himself trying to help others (and yes, oh, the irony).

But he knows the determination in his voice, knows just how goddamned stubborn the both of them can be and he doesn't really want to butt heads here in the hallway where Law looks like he could be minutes from passing out again. So he looks over his shoulder, then offers, "I'll go in. You stay here. If anyone is that bad off, I'll bring them to you."

It's a compromise he doesn't want to make, but he can see he probably doesn't have much choice.

( look my dude, totally cool not to bring up Matt was dead not too long ago. he's doing his best to deal with it, though talking about it is not on his list of priorities. way easier to deal with if he does his best to pretend it didn't happen.

Matt has been exposed to a good deal of magic and unusual circumstances, at this point. things appearing from nowhere and with no warning. he definitely didn't smell coffee, and couldn't sense the presence of it in any other way, until it suddenly appears. his brow knits in confusion, but he doesn't comment.
)

Glad to have a doctor around. I'm guessing that there's a reason you're telling me this.

( it doesn't matter that he was literally dead at the time, his stomach still manages to tie in knots that injuries she sustained that he had no ability to protect her from. there's nothing more terrifying than the absolute mortality of the people you love. even worse when there's nothing you can do to stop it.

it tempers him, slightly, to remember that Elektra just had to live through it.
) I'll be fine, ( he promises, even as she tries to feather fingers through his hair and look him in blank eyes. he's still a little lightheaded but honestly, not that concerned about it. he did just die, or... was recorporealized. however the lanterns worked.

it clearly doesn't make her feel any better, as her grip on his hand tightens and she searches for something he can't guess at on his face.
) Elektra, I'm fine. I think I was just disoriented, I already feel better.

( and while he 100% would say that, even if he wasn't feeling particularly better... Matt finds it's actually quite true. the lightheadedness is quickly fading, about as fast as the flicker faded from his lantern. the tree spirit winds vined palms around the lantern as Matt bends to scoop it up from the floor. ) See, I'm fine.

( hopefully the two of them are convinced. the mournful looking mandrake holds onto his lantern, masked face downturned. clearly not as reassured as he'd have liked. )

( it seems that neither of them have escaped the battle with the World Eater unscathed.

not a surprise. a beast of that measure, there were bound to be casualties. literally, in Matthew's case. they both wear their licks grimly, not pushing the other too hard to admit the obvious. Matt can tell there's some uncomfortable air between their patrols now, though he doubts it's something simply talking through can really resolve. or maybe that's an excuse to avoid trying. Matt has never been great at actively trying to resolve his traumas, he's always chosen to just let them fester instead.

he's trying to go back to things as usual, as if that monstrosity under the lake had never happened. there's plenty in the deaths and dark down there he'd rather not delve into, and Matt is sure he's not the only one. however, the World Eater seems to have chased him back to the surface, determined to not let him forget the dark it'd pulled him into.

it's probably good Javert catches his arm. as his lantern wanes like a candle in the wind, Matt has a hard time keeping his feet.
) No, I'm... ( fine? was that the word you were going to use, Matthew Michael Murdock? because nobody's buying it. he hisses out a heavy breath as his head continues to spin. ) I'll be all right. Just give me a minute. It'll pass.

Well, of course Rosinante gets the polite address. Law actually likes (loves, maybe) Rosinante. Soldat continues to hold the plate patiently. They've had a lot of training in waiting patiently. If Law disappears without taking it... well, they'll still have their salad crumbles, or a snack of their own. But Law might still take it.

"I'll keep that in mind, that I rate a 'hey, you'," they say. And, okay, maybe they can in fact manage a little snark. A subtle snark. It's meant amiably, though.

"Glad you mentioned it, or I might not have thought of it," they say with a little smile. And, because they haven't said it in a while and this seems like a good time, they add, "I love you, Misty."

[Which... sort of makes sense. Soldat doesn't agree with it, and it kind of makes them sad to think Javert still thinks that there's no reason to be at home if he's not sleeping, but from the inspector's perspective it does make sense.]

If. That's what you'd rather do. Okay. I know you don't like people around the way I do. Can I find you to bring you lunch? If you don't come by the inn?

How very charitable of you. The words hover on the back of her tongue, but she swallows them easily; open defiance has never been her way. She can hear the warning, and it doesn't surprise her. Not with the way both he and Law had come after her earlier.

And... well, as much as it rankles to have her fresh start tainted, she can't say it isn't fair. Germa has been responsible for terrible things. She has been responsible.

"That is my entire intent," she says instead, accepting the condition he places. "I would hope that I can be judged by my actions instead of by my family."

"The cake was plenty!" Remembering is a gift in itself. The combination of hug and that is nearly too much; in lieu of hugging him closer she emits a pleased, stifled hum. "I love you too. So much. You're my rock, y'know that? I'd have lost it by now without you around."

No point guessing just yet as to whether she's honest or a very good actor. Her actions will, indeed, show who she truly is here. His expression relaxes a little as he nods.

"You won't be the first to have asked that. We've had all sorts here, saints and criminals and everything in between," he says. "We all have room for some sympathy."
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (and it's time i knew you; so)

[ she's been feeling the same way since he'd died, and the knots in her own stomach have barely subsided, even after he's woken up. in fact, unease has just accompanied the knotting, making her feel slightly ill all over again. the whole time she'd waited for him to wake, she'd been terrified that she'd gotten something wrong, that he'd end up missing another one of his senses or his memories, and she'd never forgive herself if that happened. she honestly isn't sure what she'd do if it did.

she's not convinced at all. and from the look of things neither is treeby, who looks back at her, clearly still distressed. her mouth purses as she turns her attention back to him and watches as he moves to retrieve his lantern, and he does appear to be steadier, but there's an uneasiness in the pit of her stomach that doesn't subside. matthew's always downplayed his afflictions to a dangerous degree, who's to say he's not doing that now? ]

All right. [ she doesn't bother hiding her doubt from him, but it's not as if there's much she can do for him while they're still in the church. ] Let's go home.

"Good. Then it was worth it." He pats lightly on Ashford's shoulder, in return, then goes back to just leaning. "It was not this bad last time, though. I was over it almost immediately. If this is going to last forever, now, that might be a little less worth it." He's grousing, half out of genuine annoyance and half as a distraction from how weak and ill he still feels.

Stone can't speak in this form, but his face still looks mostly like a face, just scaled and craggy, with lots of spines instead of hair. So when he grins her way, aside from the particularly sharp teeth, it's clearly a smile.

And then he lashes his tail across the surface of the lake, to try and splash her again. This time while she's looking at him, so she can see exactly what he's doing.
worthallthis: (smilenice)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-08-06 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Aww. That's sweet. Also starting to hit the "too much" limit, since they are still fairly close after a difficult mission, and she isn't in actual need of it. They free one hand from the hug to brush down the back of her head and through her hair, then releases the other and steps back. "Well, not something you'll have to worry about. C'mon, I need you to tell me if the cake is okay. I've never made it before."
shadowsran: (41)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-08-06 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's understandable, and she weathers it with grace. "I'm not picky with cake, so the bar isn't too high to start with. You've got good odds. You cut, I'll get plates?"

It's hardly work, and the one who prepared the dessert ought to get first cut. The cabinet's a stretch away, plates quickly set out and herself seated shortly after. "And it looks good."
ultraviolents: (but my dark side's true)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-08-06 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ she just nods in agreement with that, she's certainly found it to be true. elektra's not necessarily looking to share her story with him either, but the distraction is keeping her from focusing on matthew, who needs her attention less than the other survivors do at the moment. there's nothing she can do for him until they resurface. ]

That makes for a pretty strong bond. [ and it's very fitting with who she knows rosinate to be. ] How? Was there a fight?

[ There's some kind of smart response welling up that she doesn't manage to push out, frankly, between the pain and what he says. He isn't wrong; Jill knows just enough about field medicine that she's aware that what he says is true.

Slowly, she lets out a sigh. ]

No, not really. It's...Helix, right?

[ People have said the name and those parts she remembers. She also knows she's only been here a few weeks, wherever 'here' is. It feels shorter, though, because the memories are hazy. Gone. ]

And we're underwater. I know that much. We came to see what was down here and what could help. [ Help with...what, though. Supplies? She figures that's accurate. But so many people are hurt, which means it was more than that. ] I don't know much beyond that right now. Every time I try, my head just--

[ She makes a circular gesture. Spinning, she means. ]

Okay well that explains why he doesn't want him moved if his guts are about to fall out should the stitches burst. Kuai still doesn't think the submarine is a good place to mend, but for now he'll leave that up to Rosinante - afterall the man is going to have to be woken up to eat and drink eventually and maybe they can move him then.

"I had assumed things were not going smoothly the more days passed without hearing from the group. And we expected injuries, even casualties but... I take it the bomb was successful?" He presumes so since they're here but they might have needed to run away and regroup. Not likely given those who had gone on this mission were the type he knew would fight until the end in a losing battle. Much like himself.

What's important in the moment though is tending to the survivors, "Right. What do you need to tend to him? I'll bring it to you if you'd like to keep watch."

"No need to rush," he says first. "I don't think he'll be up for a while. As for what happened, though, yeah - the bomb worked. We had enough people keeping it distracted, cutting into it, hitting it with all we had, that Weaver found an opening and I guess she got the bomb into it. It hit Law right before that, so I didn't see exactly how it went down. But it didn't seem as big as the one in that photo we've seen, and it was stuck in the portal. Still, I saw it drain the life right out of people's lanterns."

Small, weak, trapped, missing half its body given how it was somehow intersecting with the portal opening, and yet it was still disastrous to fight, between the deaths and injuries. And if he escaped with wounds of a more psychological nature, surely others suffered as well.

"It can attack the lanterns as well as people?" Admittedly he hadn't considered that. A creature that could suck their life essence right out of the lantern is quite honestly terrifying. Already he's trying to think up ways they can prevent that: lead shielding on their lanterns, magic, anything to seal up how vulnerable they are with that flame easily accessed.

"That's horrifying on many levels. I'm glad the bomb worked, and you were able to escape without even more casualties but those who suffered seem to have suffered greatly." He frowns, looking out into the night sky and trying to figure out how to ask this without being completely disheartening and blunt.

There isn't a way, and he needs to know. He respects Rosinante's opinion in such things.

"Tell me this, now that you've seen one, fought it, what do you think our chances are with the others still in this world?"
