EVENT LOG: BOTTOM OF THE RIVER

EVENT LOG:
BOTTOM OF THE RIVER

characters: everyone.
location: everywhere.
date/time: april 15-30.
content: preparation begins, and rain falls.
warnings: n/a. please cw tags appropriately.

an early warning: april 15-17

When someone goes to check the readings at the weather station in mid-April, they notice something - an immense low-pressure system incoming in just a few short days. Looks like rain on the horizon, although it isn’t immediately clear how long it will last or how much will fall - but it seems like spring has come to Beacon, and April showers bring May flowers, right?

Better get to work.

into the water: april 18-30

Thick clouds obscure the light from the stars. The air grows thick with humidity, and soon, showers begin to fall. It’s gentle at first - a pleasant sound as the drops hit the earth and tap out patterns on the roofs.

This only lasts an hour or two before the heavens seem to open up, letting loose sheets of pounding rain that make it hard to see more than twenty feet ahead of you. The sound is immense and deafening, and you find yourself shouting over the noise as you scramble to make the last of your modifications, find your friends, and take shelter.

Within days, the water falling constantly off of the edges of the rooftops has begun to dig trenches in the soil, and the river swells and overtakes its own banks. Town becomes a moving stream of water that threatens to knock you over and take you with it, and entire sections of Beacon are cut off from each other as you find yourself unable to cross the former banks of the rivers even through flight. Torches get swept away, bridges collapse, and buildings begin to crumble.

Were you prepared?

[ she smiles in turn, curving her hand over his cheekbone as she keeps grazing her thumb back and forth over the same spot. she's not really thinking he's in danger of heading back out in a torrential rainstorm with a head injury, but she also knows better than to put it past him. ]

Something can't have a dual purpose? [ she would like him to be able to get some rest, but it's also pretty clear that the little spirit is rather attached to him. if they lie down together it might be calmer. ] He's already crying less.

( if he had a spectacularly good reason, then yes. maybe. when he was talking that guy through setting his own broken arm by himself? it had been compelling to consider trying. he hadn't, though, and truth be told there's far more spectacular reasons to stay put. he's settled close under a blanket beside two of them. )

I had a friend who told me it wasn't smart to fall asleep after I hit my head. ( Claire had also told him that he should stop getting concussions, because he'd start causing damage that couldn't be fixed. so much for that, Claire, sorry. Matt sighs. ) Even if I wanted to, I'm not sure I can.

( the steady drum of the rain is so loud, he can't imagine sleeping through it. )

[ she's glad he hadn't, if only because going out during a torrential storm with a concussion would be a terrible idea even if not for the fact that from the sound of things, no one on one side of town can get to the other right now. but also because she's preferred to have him close lately, both because she likes having him close in general and because they can't seem to stay out of danger lately. she'd fared better this time, but her kidnapping and the subsequent illness are still fairly fresh in her mind. ]

How often did you make a habit of listening to her? [ not that she'd known claire, aside from being aware she existed and helped him out of danger a few times and what he'd told her about her on his own. she may have been right about concussions, but staying awake doesn't seem to be doing him any better. her mouth purses in concern and the thumb stroking his temple moves to tuck some of his hair behind his ear. ] Maybe we can find something for you to use as earmuffs.

[ not even to sleep, just to block out some of the noise. ]
