When someone goes to check the readings at the weather station in mid-April, they notice something - an immense low-pressure system incoming in just a few short days. Looks like rain on the horizon, although it isn’t immediately clear how long it will last or how much will fall - but it seems like spring has come to Beacon, and April showers bring May flowers, right?

Better get to work.

into the water: april 18-30

Thick clouds obscure the light from the stars. The air grows thick with humidity, and soon, showers begin to fall. It’s gentle at first - a pleasant sound as the drops hit the earth and tap out patterns on the roofs.

This only lasts an hour or two before the heavens seem to open up, letting loose sheets of pounding rain that make it hard to see more than twenty feet ahead of you. The sound is immense and deafening, and you find yourself shouting over the noise as you scramble to make the last of your modifications, find your friends, and take shelter.

Within days, the water falling constantly off of the edges of the rooftops has begun to dig trenches in the soil, and the river swells and overtakes its own banks. Town becomes a moving stream of water that threatens to knock you over and take you with it, and entire sections of Beacon are cut off from each other as you find yourself unable to cross the former banks of the rivers even through flight. Torches get swept away, bridges collapse, and buildings begin to crumble.

Between the elbow grab and his own dizziness, he gets pulled back easily and falls back onto the seat with a heavy thump.

"What's there to look at," he snaps back, still rubbing his face with one hand. "I just... it's just some fucking bruises."

But that pause was a bit long again, like he trailed off partway before collecting his train of thought again.

"Have you ever heard of a concussion, Fjord? Huh? Cuz I think you got one." Stern though their voice is, Soldat's flesh fingers are gentle as they feel over the top of his head, looking for lumps or signs of any cracks in the bone under the skin, just a ghost of contact through Fjord's hair. "Head injuries are big things, pal, because your brain is in there and that's what controls everything about the rest of you." Look, they don't know a ton about biology, but they picked up enough while getting operated on by HYDRA to have retained it in knowledge-without-memory format.

By some miracle, it seems like nothing important got actually broken. There's hints of blood around his nose, but given how the bruising also extends across its bridge that's not necessarily as alarming as it could be. Fjord still winces when the brushing comes close to the bruises, and he is being actively unhelpful by trying to push Soldat's hand away.

"I'm an adventurer, bein' knocked around just happens sometimes," he grunts. Irritability: check.

His nose might've been broken, but Soldat doesn't care about his nose. It can heal crooked for all they care. Only once they're sure his skull is intact, and the bumps aren't too bad, do they withdraw their hand, after using the metal one to swat Fjord's out of the way, themselves.

"And I'm an assassin, being knocked around just happens to me sometimes, too. Don't mean you don't get injured to the point where you need help. Here." They pick up the mug of stew. "Eat. I know it don't seem appetizing, but you need to eat to heal."

He only takes the mug and uncaps it because he knows what Soldat's like when he's like this. (And probably it says a lot that he does know, and yet has gotten injured enough to see it again. Maybe he just has really fucking rotten luck.)

"You're a pain in the ass," gets muttered under his breath as he does what he's told and takes a large mouthful from the mug. It tastes fine - good, even, seeing as its his first warm meal in a while - but he's still nauseous.

"I sure am. But I'm a pain in the ass that's got your best interests in mind, and clearly a better brain than you do, even if mine's broken," Soldat says with a sniff, watching pointedly for Fjord to drink more. The food ought to help the nausea rather than make it worse, with luck.

Oh, Soldat heard that. Welp.

"'s'just a headache. I'll be fine after I get a goddamn proper nap." He's sure as hell not going to fight that Soldat's brain is more of a mess than his. But at least he does keep drinking.

Supersoldier with enhanced hearing. They sure did hear that. "It's a concussion. It's not a headache. And you can nap after you finish that." All of it, Fjord. Soldat will watch. "The church seems to be holding up okay, though." (Better than Fjord. Damn. Tree to the head. That's impressive. I'm kinda surprised he's still alive. Yes.)

It's amazing what an orcish constitution can help you live through.

"Y'all can thank Masaomi fer that," he says between mouthfuls. "I wouldn't have come this way if it weren't fer him realisin' this place needed protecting."

It's... hard to tell if that's a tired compliment or an annoyed complaint.

"I didn't really think about it much, either. Mostly the Invincible and the bonfire. And the food. But it is important," Soldat agrees with a solemn nod. "All the lights in here are lives. According to Solis."

The church itself, not really necessary... not since they learned it was jut Solis bringing them back to life in a lab. But the candles definitely need to be protected.
