EVENT LOG: BOTTOM OF THE RIVER

EVENT LOG:
BOTTOM OF THE RIVER

characters: everyone.
location: everywhere.
date/time: april 15-30.
content: preparation begins, and rain falls.
warnings: n/a. please cw tags appropriately.

an early warning: april 15-17

When someone goes to check the readings at the weather station in mid-April, they notice something - an immense low-pressure system incoming in just a few short days. Looks like rain on the horizon, although it isn’t immediately clear how long it will last or how much will fall - but it seems like spring has come to Beacon, and April showers bring May flowers, right?

Better get to work.

into the water: april 18-30

Thick clouds obscure the light from the stars. The air grows thick with humidity, and soon, showers begin to fall. It’s gentle at first - a pleasant sound as the drops hit the earth and tap out patterns on the roofs.

This only lasts an hour or two before the heavens seem to open up, letting loose sheets of pounding rain that make it hard to see more than twenty feet ahead of you. The sound is immense and deafening, and you find yourself shouting over the noise as you scramble to make the last of your modifications, find your friends, and take shelter.

Within days, the water falling constantly off of the edges of the rooftops has begun to dig trenches in the soil, and the river swells and overtakes its own banks. Town becomes a moving stream of water that threatens to knock you over and take you with it, and entire sections of Beacon are cut off from each other as you find yourself unable to cross the former banks of the rivers even through flight. Torches get swept away, bridges collapse, and buildings begin to crumble.

Were you prepared?

ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (i wonder which one they like the best)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-24 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's mostly a matter of paying attention to your opponents moves.

[ she goes first to demonstrate, marking the center square with an X. it's honestly kind of a dick move, but she's not about to go easy on someone just because it's their first time playing a game. ]

Your turn.
callada: (never believed in reading the leaves)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-24 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
[It's the obvious move to make if you go first since it covers all potential squares. He doesn't have to have played before to see you want to aim to increase your own opportunities while blocking others - he was, after all, raised on far more complicated games of warfare and strategy, sometimes for fun and sometimes because his adoptive father, fleet admiral of the entire Marine branch of the government, could see the benefit of fostering his interests in tactics from a young age.

So it's maybe a bit silly to be playing a game of Xs and Os but what the hell else are they going to do right now when trying to stay dry, and it's a good excuse to try and be a little social. He places an O in a corner.]

You're both from Earth, right?

[He glances toward Matt briefly just to confirm that yes, that's the other half of the "both" he's referring to. She keeps looking at him, and he's noticed.]
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (please don't follow)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-24 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ so was she, which is why something like tic tac toe feels a little silly even though she's the one who'd suggested it. she's sure that stick would mutter something about it being childish and stupid, that any idle time could be spent doing something more constructive than games. but it's a distraction from the storm and the destruction it's already caused.

speaking of which, he brings matthew up right after she's marked the left center square and her attention is pulled briefly back towards him when rosi glances his way. ]

Yes. [ she's aware she hasn't exactly been subtle, especially since he'd gotten hurt, but he's the first to call her out. she looks back up at him. ] What about you?
callada: (repetir nuestro pasado)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not Earth.

[With a limited number of spaces left to play, he can see how this will go. Unless someone is extremely distracted, or has limited capacity to plan ahead, this game should end up in a tie most of the time. In this circumstance he has no choice but to place his O next to her short little line of two Xs. This gives him his own two in a row heading down the right side, but that leaves her only with one option of her own, and so on.

Probably someone could play the psychological angle of this game and try to keep their opponent so engaged in conversation they mistakenly place a mark in the wrong box, but he's just here to hang out and kill time, not to play mind games. He gets enough of that with Cao Pi.]

I hear a lot about Earth here, though. Most people here are from there. Big cities, lots of people, lots of cars, lots of land. Right?
ultraviolents: it better run like hell ('cause what doesn't kill me)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-25 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ she'd kind of guessed that, based on his height alone. he doesn't seem that eager to elaborate on where he is from, so she makes a mark in the top left corner instead. ]

In some places. Lots of people is correct pretty much everywhere, though.

[ she's lived in a lot of different places, with varying amounts of privilege and status. cities were where she'd spent most of the latter half of her life, though, so if he's got more questions regarding those specifics she's willing to answer them. ]
callada: (stop and savor the cigarettes)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Speaking of distracted. Well, they all have plenty of other things to think about, don't they? Or maybe she just wanted to let him win and pretend it was beginner's luck.

He is reading way too much into this simple game which tells him, as he places the last O in the row, that he'd better light another cigarette and chill out. He's thinking too hard about this and he can only guess it's because he feels so helpless to get out and make sure people are safe amidst all the flood.]

Am I supposed to say something when I win?

[He chuckles a little as he snuffs out the stub of the one cigarette and gets another going. He's running low. Soon as the rain stops, he'll have to go let Rastus know he's due for a reorder.]
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (close your eyes and listen carefully)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ she definitely did not intend to let him win, and her expression when she realizes he has reflects that. but she tries not to act too put out by it. apparently he's not the only one who needed the distraction; she's not only preoccupied with matthew, but the state of things by the time this all ends and whether or not everyone will make it. ]

You draw a line through it, usually. [ she'll let him do the honors, he did win fair and square. ] Do you want to play again, or did you want to hear about some of the others?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
How about one of the others? Might as well learn a few new games.

[He'll just continue his slow absorption of Earth culture. It's interesting enough and he still recognizes, even after so many months here, that it's an unusual situation he may as well take full advantage of. Since when does anyone else get to meet people from entire different worlds? Sure, he can't take any of this back, but he'll enjoy it for himself.]
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (en13897405)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sure.

[ she flips to another blank page, considering for a moment. there's other games they can do with pens and paper than the ones she'd mentioned, but since he hadn't been familiar with any of them, she decides to go with another of those. this time she draws a stick figure version of a noose with nine dashes underneath. since he's not from earth, it might be presumptuous for her to assume he's familiar with the alphabet, but he does know english. ]

This one's called hangman. You say a letter and I either draw a part of the body or add it to the word to spell it out.
callada: (se siente bien estar aquĆ)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Morbid little game. Common letters only?

[Language where he comes from is indeed a somewhat complicated thing, owing to the merging of languages and dialects from so many different islands. As such, most government branches, as well as most oceanwide newspapers, stick to the one official common language when written words are needed, made up of a simple alphabet as well as complex characters for some words and concepts. He's taking a guess here at her intent based on everyone else's usual preferred use of what he perceives as that same common alphabet, aside from a few like Cao Pi and Kuai Liang who use the complex words exclusively.

Thankfully, something about death and revival here means they all mostly understand each other. Most of the time.]

I assume I win if I get the word right. How do I lose?
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (the street's a liar)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I draw the entirety of the man's body. [ that's where the name comes from! ] Your chances of winning increase depending on how detailed I feel like getting with the drawing.

[ and he thought it was morbid before. ]

Yes, common letters. I add however many there are to the word as it's spelled out, so if you use C once, you don't use it again.
callada: (just the usual heroics)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-25 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Right.

[There's a sort of humor to it, though. Here's hoping the linguistics work out between their worlds, or that she'll be lenient and start drawing fingers and toes. Nine letters, huh? Well, start with the basics.]

E, then.
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (and if i catch it coming back my way)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-27 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ she might, she likes him. and he's fortunate enough to have guessed one of the letters, so he may not even need her to. she marks an 'E' in the fourth space. ]

Good start.
callada: (se siente bien estar aquĆ)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-27 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Only the one, huh? Gonna need another vowel or two in there. He studies the blanks for a short moment, then rolls the cigarette in his mouth with his tongue and shrugs.]

Okay. I.
ultraviolents: my name's still on your tongue ('cause when all is said and done)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-27 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
[ an 'I' gets written into the seventh space, and she looks up with a slightly raised eyebrow. ]

Sure you've never played this before?
callada: (lurk moar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-27 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Just guessing common letters. Call it beginner's luck.

[Or a basic understanding of common-language words and their need for vowels. Meanwhile, he's already trying to think of nine-letter words in the town around them in case she has been kind enough to pick something thematic.]

Never played a lot of word games like this. How about, mm, N.
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (en13897405)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-04-27 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
You've been having a streak of that.

[ he really has, she's had no reason to draw so much as a circle for a head yet and she's not even trying to be thematic, just picked the first word that came to mind. an 'N' gets written in at the end. ]
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-04-27 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's only three letters so far.

[Plenty of room to screw up once the obvious choices are eliminated. Looking at what exists now, I_N at the end of a word, not many letters can fit between there and make sense. He still has no clue as to what the overall word is, but the one letter in between might be an O. The one before the I might be a T. RATION, STATION, VACATION - it's a common suffix and if he's lucky there's another O or T elsewhere in the word.

He should make some cyphers for her to solve. Maybe she knows something about cryptography. That could be more of a challenge. It's true he's never played Hangman but he's had to write his share of coded letters.]

T?
ultraviolents: (every single one's got a story to tell)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-05-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
[ she's somewhat experienced with ciphers, usually in other languages, but she'd picked a standard word in english because it was the first one that came to mind. he's somewhat correct about there being a 'T' in the word (three, actually). after she's made another few marks, the word now reads _TTENTI_N. (and it always did no matter what i wrote before.) ]

callada: (se siente bien estar aquĆ)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-03 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Attention?

[Can he just say a whole word like that, or does he have to guess it letter by letter? He lifts his eyes from the paper to her face.

It's not a bad game, and she probably played it safe by picking a word that wasn't too obscure, to make sure he understood it. But he can see easily how to make this game much harder by choosing words intentionally with much less commonly-used letters. It's really just a decryption game, ultimately.]
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (babe you can see that i'm danger)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-05-03 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well done.

[ in fairness he'd pretty much spelled the whole word out by now. she hadn't been consciously playing it safe, but she'd tried to be mindful of the fact that he'd mentioned he wasn't from earth and may only be so familiar with the language. evidently she hadn't needed to be that cautious. ]

Do you want to pick a word now?
callada: (me abandonó sin avisar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-04 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all right.

[He thinks on it a moment before deciding on a word he knows they must both have in common. No mysterious cyphers or anything else yet, let's give this game another shot. He takes the pen and paper and draws five blank spaces.]

Go for it.
ultraviolents: (every single one's got a story to tell)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-05-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ they can graduate to that eventually, they've got nothing but time here. elektra considers for a few moments, then decides on a letter that hadn't been used in the previous word. ]

S?
callada: (stop and savor the cigarettes)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-06 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
No. Hmm, what - how do I start this off?

[Draw the man's body, she had said, but he's no artist and has no example to go off of. He smiles over at her, just a bit apologetic for having to ask her how he's supposed to hang this poor fellow just because she got a letter wrong.]
ultraviolents: but blessed with beauty and rage (when everything seemed)

[personal profile] ultraviolents 2020-05-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ she smiles back, even in spite of getting her guess wrong. ]

Start with the head. Depends on how detailed you feel like getting, but most just draw a circle.
