EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET
characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.
i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.
For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.
By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!
Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:
The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!
See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!
All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!•••
For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?
On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.
If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.
And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)
Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

Jason still finds watching someone else relive a memory to be a little weird and probably would have agreed with Riku's comparison. At least it was usually quick, so as soon as Riku touches the stone to his bare skin he steps to the side so he's not just...staring. This is weird enough as it is.
When Riku joins the present again, Jason gestures with his hands in a way that suggestions your really going to have to give him more than that. "Yeah. I got his name. What was all that stuff with the keyholes and those horned guys? That all felt...really intense." Jason blinks, "Wait a second...did you say king?"

"I've seen books in the library about other worlds. It sounds like most of them are one great big one. Where I'm from? The kingdom is a bunch of much smaller worlds all sharing the same sky."
Riku side-steps a distressingly tall spirit that looks like its all spindly legs and resists the urge to look up to find out where it ends.
"Almost everybody lives without knowing about the existence of these other worlds, but his Majesty watches over them," finally locating an empty space that's somewhat quieter, he turns to face Jason, "As for the other stuff, like those horned guys, the keyholes? That's a long story...
"There was a man who wanted to wipe clean the slate of existence and start over with a world of his own making. To do that, he needed to summon and control the heart of all worlds, Kingdom Hearts. That man's name... was Xehanort."
Cupping his chin with his hand, he summarizes, "The armored guys with the horns... they're associated with Xehanort, and the number of them tells me they were fragments of him," he knows how strange this will sound, "To achieve his goal, he needed thirteen vessels of Darkness. So he split up pieces of himself to ensure he had the thirteen he needed."

He slows to a stop when they've reached their new destination, cocking his head to the side with a slight smile, "Yeah. I'm starting to get that impression...of course I think a lot of people here have long stories." At least the ones he'd been hanging out with. It was things people said or choices they made that showed that to Jason more than anything. It was why he never hesitated to reveal his status as a demigod because so far while there was the initial surprise, most people seemed to have encountered much stranger things in their lives. This place had a habit of smashing very different belief systems together after all, so why shouldn't it also be weird.
Strangely enough, it's not the Xehanort information that throws him really. The gods could split different aspects of themselves and the Romans even had a two-faced god...of course those were gods and he got the sense that Xehanort may want to BE like one, but probably wasn't one himself. The number thirteen was interesting, but only because numbers were important to mythology and thus demigods: 3, 12, 7, being a few important ones.
"So the king...he was trying to stop him. I'm guessing you and the others were helping with that...though the part of the memory I saw didn't look like it was going very well..." 13 against 8 wasn't terrible odds, but the fight he had just seen...those 13 fragments were stil very powerful. He hopes this isn't how Riku ended up here, Jason doesn't know how comfortable he would be talking about that, especially when for him it's still a subject he'd rather avoid even now.

He glances up at the aurora thoughtfully. They won, but in the process they lost Kairi. So Sora set out to bring her back in spite of the danger. The power he used to bring her back came at a terrible cost. Sora disappeared.
"That was what? Almost two years ago? Time flies," Riku sighs, "Anyway, it's... really cool to see for myself how Mickey managed to beat back those guys," he says, a little cheered by the thought, "I appreciate you bringing it back to me."

"You're welcome," Jason says. He wasn't sure what else he was expected to do with the memory stones that weren't his. Though he imagines there are probably those who would be asking for a trade or something. But, well, it's not his memory so it feels wrong to do something like that.
Much like his encounter with Superman -- Kal -- he's hesitant to bring up anything about popular media. He'd been so awkward around Kal, but this felt a little different. Mickey was a memory in his head now, not actually standing in front of him. It might be harder to hide his feelings then. Instead he decides to ask another question, skirting the issue, "How'd you meet him anyway? You said there were all these different worlds...you don't look like you're from his corner of it."
There was something about the memory. Even with the intense struggle, there had been a reassurance. He never would have thought of Mickey Mouse as a reliable or reassuring presence, but that was the feeling he'd gotten, like you could trust everything to him. The way Riku spoke of him too, there was admiration there or at least respect that Jason recognized.

Humans have their weaknesses.
"That's an even longer story. The short version is Mickey set out to search for a certain Keyblade," Riku explains, resting a fist against his hip, "Meanwhile, me and my friends were trying to build a raft to leave our world and see what else was out there. I," he hesitates, "Am not really proud of how what I did to leave, but while we were separated, I eventually ran into Mickey."
He's just gonna... yep... gloss over huge amounts of important plot points... what can he say, he hates telling long stories.
no subject
"So your paths just...crossed? That seemed like a stronger bond than that."
He supposes part of those long stories involved what happened next.
no subject
He folds his arms, "Doing it would save everyone, but trapped Mickey and I inside. During that journey, we became friends," Riku cuts his gaze away, "If he hadn't been there, I would've faded into the Darkness."
The way he speaks of it, it seems the Darkness is something a little different from the pervasive lack of light here.
