EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

festival botches, please!

Sora's just picking up memories at random - he's got a bit of a pocketful already, waiting to be taken to their rightful owners. This one's just a random stone as well - he doesn't know who it belongs to, or what it's of. Welp, only one way to find out!

He scoops it up and holds it in his hands. Huh... Is this the Night Market?

o7 you got it!

The opal he's picked up is black with dominant green streaks, but also every other colour of the rainbow too - and it sure as hell can't be the Night Market, because it's a chilly, overcast but still sunny morning that looks rather more like a fully dedicated Ren Faire. There's a bright liveliness to the air, excitement and chatter and squealing children - and there's a whole day's worth of memories packed into it, of drinking with friends and playing the games, watching his friends win and lose the small contests and try the candied apples.

One particular stretch of the memory that sticks out to Sora, because he's heard at least part of it in summary, is Fjord attempting to toss a bean-bag, ten feet, over his shoulder.

The first shot, smacks a young mother in the face.

The second, somehow catches on his breastplate and Fjord just sprays a whole heap of sand into his own face, getting a lot of laughs and some small applause.

"I can't believe I'm about to say this," Fjord's voice says, looking at Jester and Yasha. "But let's... let's give this a try."

And the two women, the blue tiefling far more eagerly than the Aasimar, grab Fjord, lift him and shotput him, face first, into the stretch of carpet.

Okay, far be it for Sora to besmirch the dead (and the recently revived, for that matter), but once he realizes that he recognizes that armor and the little flashes of green skin he saw and especially the accent... It could be anyone else, but that plus the story Fjord told him at the Night Market makes this puzzle simple enough for even Sora to solve. Hm!

Sora is out looking for just about half of Beacon at this point, but when he sees Fjord heading back up to the Invincible... well, he'll gulp down a bit of sadness at, uh, the whole situation last week, but he's fine! He had towels waiting for Fjord! And chocolate! Honestly, now's not the time to dwell.

He'll walk firmly up to Fjord and pat him on the shoulder. "Hey. How are you?"

Fjord jumps a bit at the unexpected touch. He hasn't seen much of the youth since... well, that; so he gives Sora a bit of a warmer smile than he otherwise might have, to reassure him that Fjord is perfectly okay.

Snapping his neck wasn't an upsetting memory to have at all, nope.

"I'm doin' pretty okay, now that Molly's given me my damn armour back." He turns a bit more to face Sora properly, resting a hand idly on the bag tied to his waist. "How 'bout you?"

Yeeeah, Sora's just gonna keep things light and positive. Any overthinking and he's liable to crack. (Fjord's all there, right? Memory intact? Nothing important changed? Doesn't have nearly twenty years of memories from an alternate dimension? Hey, things happen.)

"Not bad. That armor came in pretty handy." Seriously, it worked as intended and Sora was able to pull Molly to safety. That plus Alisaie coming back safely were the only two bright points of that little adventure.

Anyway, Sora will already be slapping around in his pockets, pulling little paper packets out of them labeled with different names and pretty random topics. "Got something of yours. And, uh, my guy? You got some explaining to do." Sora's got a bit of a smirk on his face. "Remember what were talking about when we first met? When you beat me at the shooting gallery?"

He looks fairly okay, and he smiles lightly at Sora's own cheer. Both of them are so good at this.

"I knew it would." And knew it would be better off with someone else; he's rather glad Molly didn't have to die because of him again.

But Sora's rummaging gets a mild frown, curious more than anything else, and his smile doesn't disappear. "I seem to recall that pretty okay. What about it?"
arsarcanum: (pic#13719720)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-02-25 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! As long as you don't think about the thing that happened, it's like it didn't happen!

Anyway, Sora will finally get the correct packet out, stuffing the rest back in. (They're getting kind of wrinkly, not gonna lie. Hope they don't end up ripping!) Anyway, the one in his hand is labeled ?? FYORD PROBABLY - festival!, and he'll hand that over without much ceremony.Yes, that smirk's evolved into a smile. "Your friends are real supportive. Strong. Aim could use a little work." He likes Jester and Yasha quite a bit. Jester especially seems like fun!
fjorgedinfire: By <user name=samijen site=tumblr.com> (Well hell)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-07 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...hoo boy. He looks at the little packet, and can't help commenting first, "It's a 'J', actually, not a 'Y'." as he takes it and gently tears it open to get to the gemstone inside.

It's a long memory, an entire day's worth, but he doesn't need to hold it for long to recognise it, and very quickly he's dropping it into the bag tied to his waist with no ceremony and a very slightly deer-in-headlights look on his face. "Yeah, that uh. Sure was a thing that happened." He clears his throat uncomfortably - he doesn't do well being caught out in a lie, and now he's embarrassed as heck. "To be fair, their throws were forward-facing."
arsarcanum: (pic#13739778)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-07 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, gotcha." Sora adds that to his mental filing cabinet of Fjord Fjacts. He will have a bit of a toothy grin on his face as soon as Fjord exits the memory, then he'll rub his nose with a finger. He doesn't need to crow about this at all, satisfaction was gotten, but that sure was a lot of context he'd just very casually forgotten. Sora will not tease him about it, but he will have this in spirit forever.

"Yeah, they were. Although Molly did get in a real good throw, dunno how he did it." He shrugs. "You guys seemed like you were having a lot of fun. How long were you traveling together?"
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Sure thing)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-11 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Molly's fuckin' dexterous," he says dryly. "By that point we'd been together for, uh." He blows out a puff of air as he thinks. "Shit, maybe two months? Two an' a half or something."
arsarcanum: (pic#13719720)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-11 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Two, two and a half months." Sora nods. That's about when the first fights start happening, in Sora's experience. At least when it comes to strangers in close quarters traveling around for a long time. "No boat then, huh? When did that happen?"
fjorgedinfire: By <user name=meglm site=tumblr.com> (Thank you for that terrifying mental ima)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-12 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
He looks pained. "About four and a half months ago, or something like that. It's easy to lose track of time."
arsarcanum: (pic#13708167)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-12 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sora whistles. "Did you have to teach 'em all how to sail? I thought they'd all be a crew, but they're more like adventurers, right?"
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Sure thing)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-15 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, there was still some crew on the ship, still, so it wasn't like it was just the seven of us trying to sort that shit out." And thank fuck for that. "Mostly I had to teach Beau how t'be my new first mate, but everyone else worked alongside the crew, more or less."
arsarcanum: (pic#13784118)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-16 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's such a big group of friends!! Sora had about that many at the very most, but he mostly traveled around in twos or threes. Fours on a very nice day. Hang on, he's going to enjoy the thought of being around seven! Whole! People! All the time!

"It's such a big group. Must've been hard to keep everything in line." Sora raises his fingers, starts counting them off... "You, Beau, Jester, Yasha... Molly, and...?" Who were those last two guys, again?
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Happy face)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-16 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Caleb and Nott. Which works out pretty well, since they've been a pair since 'fore me, Beau and Jester met 'em." He's not sure for how long, but they sure had been. "Then the five 'f us met Mollymauk and Yasha together when their circus came through town."
arsarcanum: (pic#13738309)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-17 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Man, that's a party. Or a really big basketball team." Sora clearly is reveling in the idea of so many traveling partners. "What made you guys wanna stick together?" Safer travel? Similar goals? Did they just like each other a whole bunch? Sora can relate with all three.
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Sure thing)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-03-17 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Initially me an' Caleb were both against it," he admits. "But when the lot of us fought against this weird zombie outbreak, then killed the nergaliid causing it and a goddamn manticore? Those kinds of thing makes you stick together."

Okay, Sora's going to find the nearest flat surface, sit his butt down, and point to the most comfortable flat surface in Fjord's vicinity. Sit. "I gotta hear about this," Sora says very seriously.
