EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

To each their own. If this is where Xayah is happiest, then of course she should live here. Soldat can understand that.

They smile at her, to show there's no problem or anything. "Yes, and yes. Nothing bad, though. I think." Unless she gets really upset about them seeing her memory, anyway. They hold out the metal hand, where there's a fabric-wrapped opal settled on the palm. "This is yours. Thought you might want it back."

Some habits just never die- Soldier has his urge for regular patrols, she has the urge to be in the open to be able to breathe. She wishes she could do more for the forest though.

She sure hopes it's not bad. Hers? "Mmm? Are you sure? I don't remember having a collection before," she half-jokes but still reaches out to take the stone- it looks pretty, she's not going to lie. But as soon as her hand wraps around it, she freezes as the memory washes over her, vivid and in all of its colors. She remains quiet for a bit, not because the memory didn't finish, but because it took the breath away from her.

"How... what is this? Where did you find it? Did you..." she looks up from the stone in her hand and up at him, "...see?"

"When the spirits hit the aurora. They. Break apart, turn into these, fall and hit the ground." Soldat looks apologetic. "I'm looking for mine. To find ones I'm missing. Means I find other people's, too. I'm sorry." Which means yes, they did definitely see her memory, and they do feel bad for the invasion of privacy, but they're not gonna stop looking either.

Spirits hitting Aurora... is this some kind of joke? She's seen flashes in the skies but she didn't think that spirits would be doing that. Although, the forest is indeed quieter than usual. Her fingers twirl the stone, feeling rough ridges as her eyes admire the glowing parts of it.

"It's fine," she shakes her head. "I wish you could've seen me fight entire battalion of ninjas but this isn't bad either." It's... not a bad memory at all. In fact, it's only one of maybe a handful that is good in her life. "That's. How I met him. Rakan, my mate. Or, uh, fiance, husband(?) in human terms. It's uh... good... good memory..." she trails off, making it obvious that she's never talked about this before to anyone. Well, Crowley made her relive one of her memories before, but they didn't talk about it.

Yeah, it's a little disturbing, where these things seem to be coming from. Just not disturbing enough for Soldat to stop. In this, they are being supremely selfish.

The awkward explanation gets a small, sweet kind of smile. "He's your favorite person," Soldat summarizes. "I understand." They've got memories of Steve, now. He might not have been their mate in that way (they, uh, don't think anyway; honestly, there could be a bunch of sex-memories and Soldat would never know, but it doesn't seem like they had that kind of friendship?), but he was special. "Now you have it, and you won't ever forget."

She sighs and smiles back, shrugging, "He was. I still don't know how I fell for him in the end. He was all sorts of reckless and bright, a complete contrast to me. I guess I found him charming in the end." Rakan was nothing if not persistent and positive. She loved having him by her side and hated the fact that she took that peace away from him.

"Unless ripped out of me, it is something I will never forget. Meeting him had changed me..."
worthallthis: (sheepish)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-19 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Soldat decides not to say that it's entirely possible that it could be ripped from her. After their own experience with the lanterns splintering them into pieces, knowing that death and lantern damage could take memories, knowing that their own brain might not always be reliable.... "I'd keep that, anyway. If it were me. I'm keeping all of mine." They give a slightly sheepish smile. "But then. They're all new, to me. Don't want to lose them again."
featherknives: (You remember the Aphae waterfall?)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-02-20 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Her lantern didn't shatter and her memories are still intact, luckily. Still, it's nice to have something like this with her, something she can experience again, although the feeling of seeing Rakan for the first time nothing can ever match. "I'm not going to throw it away, no. It looks nice." She looks up from the rock to Soldier. "You found some of yours?"
worthallthis: (smilesad)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-20 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"A few, yeah." Their smile shades a bit sad. "Good ones and bad ones." And even the good ones are kind of difficult. It's been an exhausting, emotional few days so far. "But they both fill in the holes, so. Not complaining."
featherknives: (29)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-02-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
She nods, "I'm glad." Memories are important, whether bad or good; they contain important pieces of who they are and events that shaped them. "If I run into some of yours, I will bring them to you, I promise." She doesn't know how else she could help him out.
worthallthis: (lookback-sarge)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you." That's kind of her, it really is, especially given some of the things they know will be in those memories. "Not all of them are easy to recognize as mine. Some of them I don't have the metal arm." And, you know, a completely different name and attitude. But that's not something they can say aloud.
featherknives: (23)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-02-22 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
"No need to thank me, you brought my memory to me, it is the least I can do for you." She nods, then smiles a little, her head tilted, "That's fine. I doubt I will mistake your presence with anyone else's, even if it is a memory." He just has that kind of aura that draws in the attention of others, that draws in her attention at times. He's... quite a remarkable, enigmatic human being. There's no way she'll confuse him with anyone else.
worthallthis: (amused-sarge)

oh geez so sorry I misplaced this one!

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-02 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering how very different their memories from before the war are... they're not entirely sure she's right. They're not even properly a person (Anymore. Happy? Better, anyway.) let alone that kind of friendly and happy. "Well," they allow with a little smile, "at least you can probably tell it won't be anyone else in particular. The kid-- Sora. Couldn't tell one was mine, but it was childhood. Harder to recognize at six years old, probably."
featherknives: (25)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-03-02 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in the end, if she doesn't manage to recognize him, that thought alone will make this conversation stand out so she'll draw a conclusion.
"That is true, we all were very different when we were young." From their looks to their beliefs. She misses those days (but she dares not say it, this place is not for sentimentality).
worthallthis: (grin-sarge)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-03 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah?" Soldat tries to imagine a bitty, feathery, baby Xayah. The mental image is pretty cute. Especially since the mental image seems to basically be a ball of purple down with her little nose and very big eyes. Interesting decision, brain. Probably not accurate, but still cute. "What were you like?"

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-03-04 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Raucous, my father would say," she chuckles. "I had a horrible singing voice and yet sung every song he taught me atop of my lungs. I'd scuffle with other kids because of it." Not always a winner, but always ending up pulling a few feathers out. Xayah smiles, "Father would always give me a lecture after those. For better or for worse, that fighting spirit part of me never changed."
worthallthis: (grin-sarge)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-04 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"You'd scuffle because of singing? That's terrible, everyone should be able to sing. Even if they're bad at it." They're smiling, though. "I think. I think maybe I sang a lot, too. I'm good at it, though." That said almost like they're teasing.
featherknives: (29)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-03-05 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She laughs, "Not singing, per se. I'd sing- horribly- they would yell at me, I'd yell back and then we would scuffle." There's always yelling involved because she's not the one to not answer back to provocations... even when she's the one that started it. "Hmm... maybe you should try then." Her gaze looks distant for a moment, "Rakan sang a lot, at any given time." At first, she thought it was annoying and distracting, but he had such a good voice that songs eventually got under her skin.
worthallthis: (smilenice)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-05 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do sometimes. When I'm cooking, mostly." They smile a bit, fond and amused. "Probably drives people up the wall, if they're in the kitchen with me. Aziraphale tried to join in once, though. Scared the shit outa me at first." Aziraphale's voice isn't terrible, it just wasn't expected. Funny that the angel actually knows Bing Crosby.
featherknives: (17)

[personal profile] featherknives 2020-03-07 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
She grins and shakes her head, "Rakan had this habit of humming under his breath as we walked and it would so easily drag me into singing with him. Or at least humming alongside him." And that says a lot because Xayah is, nowadays, not really into singing anymore. There could be an occasion where she could sing and she wouldn't be that bad, but she tries to avoid it.
