EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

It's more of a two-sides of the same coin problem, but yes, they're considered distinct enough personalities to be separate. His comment does pique Jason's interest. He's picked up a few memories now and only a few of them had been on the same level of strange as his own. "Oh yeah? Like what?" consider him curious now, because to say something like that after fighting underwater with a giant, a goddess, and several magical snakes -- it had to be something.

Gaea had messed up a lot of the natural order, so it takes Jason a moment to figure out how to phrase her goal, "She wanted her own children, the Giants, to be in power and in order to do that needed to make sure that all traces of the gods were wiped from the Earth." After all, that was why they'd gone overseas to Greece and Rome, to stop her from destroying the roots of the gods -- the original Mount Olympus.

Oh, that kind of do-over. He supposed if someone had that kind of power then why not try for that. Still, the very notion that she could just wipe everyone out just so her kids were on top was nothing short of horrible. He wished more were like Nyx, but most gods didn’t get to spent time in a human host, let alone gain human emotions.

“I wouldn’t know where to begin,” He shrugged, giving a thoughtful hum. “I suppose... I’ll have to explain the Dark Hour and Personas, if I had to guess. Ten years ago, there was an experiment that went awry when a company tried to harness the power of Shadows. Beings of negative emotions, to put it simply. They wanted to gain the powers of time and space by harnessing the Shadows but one scientist disagreed with this plan because there was a prophecy that would eventually bring the Fall, ending all human life as we knew it. They just needed to gather shadows en masse to bring Death and, eventually, Nyx. He sabotaged it and managed to delay the inevitable for a time, but in doing so the Dark Hour was created. It’s a missing twenty-fifth hour in the day and most are unaware of its existence because they become sleeping coffins during that hour.”

He paused, he knew this all sounded crazy and he was vastly oversimplifying it. “This leads me to Personas. Those who become aware of the Dark Hour have the potential to summon Personas, beings that manifest from your soul. Everyone actually has one, even you. It’s one of many masks that you wear to get through life, a facet of your personality. And it can protect you from Shadows. That’s what my friends and I did, we fought Shadows during the Dark Hour.”

Even when they did, the lessons never seemed to stick. Gods existed too long for such things to stick. Although Jason was still hopeful that Apollo would heed him, especially considering he'd died for him.

Jason wasn't sure what to expect, but it was nowhere near where Minato started to go with his explanation. Just when he starts to think he'd heard some of the weirder stories (and lived some of them too) he's given something like this. Prophecies he could understand, but a missing hour of time? Coffins? If his own life wasn't so bizarre by most standards he'd have a harder time accepting this. Still, by the time Minato is done with even this brief explanation Jason has an expression on his face that is somewhere between befuddled and stunned.

You're going to have to give him a second to process all that dude. "And that was just the start?" he finally manages to stammer. "How'd your friends get roped into something like that?" He wonders if it's tied to the prophecy, but if everyone had the potential -- not just demigods like most prophecies Jason was familiar with -- then what made Minato and his friends get involved in something that crazy?

Everyone has a persona, but not everyone has the potential. That was the difference. Minato was patient, however, because he knew what he said likely was hard to grasp. Even he wasn't sure he explained it all concisely, and he left out quite a bit.

"Our senpais - ah, upperclassmen - had been a part of this from the beginning. One of them is the granddaughter of the CEO of the company who was heading the experiment. So she'd been involved since the beginning and it was she and her father who tried to undo what the grandfather has started. I never asked how the others before me joined, to be honest, but I joined because I transferred to the school in town right at midnight, when the Dark Hour began. They noticed I hadn't been transmogrified into a coffin, so I think they were waiting to see if I had the potential and... ah, well, I did. That's kind of how the rest of us got roped in... it's a pretty long and varied story, I'm sorry."

He gave an apologetic smile. "We had a whole year of an adventure, but we managed to get rid of the Dark Hour." A whole year of fighting, revelations, death, and more. But he had gained a lot and more out of it. Even if it meant he was here because of it.

Jason follows this part a little easier, perhaps because it is in response to a question he asked. He can tell there is still a lot left unsaid, even before Minato admits that there is a long and varied story behind it. Jason nods, "I get it. This place has a way of bringing together a wide variety of people. I keep getting proven wrong in terms of thinking that my experiences are the strangest. I think most people here have long stories."

Granted, weird for mortals was a demigods' normal. Jason had hardly realized his life was weird until he was older and came to realize that most of the demigod children that came to Camp Jupiter got at least several years in the mortal world before joining the camp.

And that was just his start too.

"I'm sure there are some people here who have normal lives... relative to our own, anyway," Minato chuckled with a shrug. "Although, you might find it interesting to know. The personas we used, we didn't name them or anything, but they named themselves after several of the Greek gods and figures. I had two at the start - Thanatos and Orpheus."

Maybe. But Jason seems to attract the strange here just as much as he did back home. Perhaps he had a type.

The next piece of information seems a little too close to coincidence, "Really?" What were the odds, "That's...an interesting pairing. The god of death and...wasn't Orpheus famous for his music?" There are a lot of myths to keep up with after all, so it's not surprising that he wouldn't necessarily be familiar with every single one -- especially when they were very Greek and not Roman. "What did they look like?" He's curious to compare. Not that he knows Orpheus's appearance, but he'd heard Hazel, Percy, and Frank describe Thanatos.

Minato nodded. "That would be them. I doubt they look like the actual Greek gods that you're used to seeing from your world. I don't think I could describe them well but..."

He dug into his pocket, it was stone that had recently been returned to him. He held it out for Jason. "You can see for yourself if you want," He paused. "Ah but... A word of caution. Please try not to be alarmed but what you'll see, but I'll do my best to explain."

He wasn't really sure how else to warn for putting a gun to his head when it wasn't actually going to kill him.

Probably not, but the gods of have an interesting way of extending their presence out into the world and now it seems into other worlds as well? He shouldn't be so surprised after his conversations with both Riku and Sora about their version of Hercules, but it's still hard to process.

One way to find out he supposes. Jason eyes the opal. It seems strange to be sharing memories like this, but like many heroes Jason does not back down easily. It was a memory. Whatever was inside was in the past and Jason had certainly faced down death plenty of times before actually dying. He nods, accepting the advice, and touching this new opal.

Still, words don't do a lot to prepare you for putting a gun to your own head. Although, in hindsight, perhaps it's not so different from the time Jason had thrown himself off of the platform to save Piper -- not knowing he could fly and thinking they were both just going to splat on the canyon floor. It was a similar rush and a similar result: saving someone else and risking your own life in the process.

The Personas were not at all like what he had pictured -- more monstrous than godlike. He couldn't speak for Orpheus, but that was NOT the Thanatos he was familiar with at all.

Jason blinks as the Dark Hour fades and is replaced with whatever hour it is in Beacon. "No wonder you weren't so freaked out by fighting a giant," he manages, having to reassess his views on Minato. There was...a lot to unpack there.
