EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

[ The Soldier didn't really strike Lucius as someone who had a family. There's a certain distance in his manner that Lucius had noticed while they were together. He hadn't thought much of it, but now... ]

Oh...

[ What does he say, though? He knows nothing of family. ]

A previous life of yours, maybe?

"Hm." He takes a moment to think, rubbing his chin. "If it is family, then that would make sense. That was my father, in the circle of fawning retainers."

Which doesn't explain hardly anything, but he's seen Rosinante's raw moments, and he most certainly owes something in return as they discussed. He steps slightly closer, though, tipping his gaze up to the aurora. He's been spending as much time outdoors in the light as he can, until it gets too cold. "We all thought he was dead, that Orochi had killed him. His own cousins - in that throng there, mind you - affirmed it, I believed it as much as anyone else. But at Yamazaki, he appeared suddenly on the battlefield, reinforcing our army as it was being attacked. It seemed he escaped death by a hair and had been recovering in secret for months, only to arrive on the scene as spectacularly as he possibly could."

His voice drips with sarcasm, and not a little bitterness, even as he admits that his dead father showed up alive.

I hope I find one of yours. I hope it's totally mortifying and I can hold it against you for forever.

[ But he's clearly joking, if the smile on his face is any indication.

For the moment, Eliot sets the stone in his pocket, and he gently guides Quentin towards the kitchen. There's not exactly the alcohol supply Eliot is used to when it comes to hosting people, but there's the smell of freshly baked something. Croissants, by the look of it, since Eliot is grabbing a tray of them.
]

It is nice, right? Midge knows how to keep a nice home. Here, eat some of these.

Oh?

[yeah he's not buying it. But that's a mystery to plumb delicately, to work around until he can get the answer. A challenge, and a game he's good at.]

Well. I will accept the compliments, that I know what I'm doing, but I caution you not to mistake competence for kindness.

[which probably stands in stark contrast to visions of him being a swooning dork in love writing poetry for his wife but...eh]

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-24 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good. I hope it's not about the lap dance.

[ He says it mostly to himself. Up until now, the memories of himself that Eliot's encountered have been pretty tame, which he considers alarmingly lucky, since he has a whole life time of embarrassing and traumatic ones.

Eliot figures he's just about due for someone to find one of those more awful ones.
]

So. Can I have it back?

[ Vanitas has no qualms with picking up opals, and his interest is keenly piqued when he spots anyone else trying very hard to play keep away with them. It doesn't really matter that they're Carmilla's memories or not— Vanitas converges on one of the opals almost in tandem with her. He slips in and snatches the stone out from underneath her fingers.

He's wearing gloves, so he doesn't see whats hidden inside it. Not yet. ]

What are you hiding?

[ He jeers, assuming this is either one of hers or someone she cares about. He raises his free hand to his mouth, pulling his glove off with his teeth. ]

"So, not too bad," Soldat says once Fjord is clearly back with them, finished with the moment of reliving his own past. Yeah, they recognized the exhaustion, the ache, the way that feels emotionally. They're not going to comment on it unless Fjord does, because it seems kind of rude. "I've seen a lot worse."

Rrrrrrreturnin' and if you're running on a one-per-mem rule lemme know and I'll adjust

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-24 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
[He seems in fine spirits, typically does when she spots him in passing, and that makes this task all the more unpleasant. The opals can be of benefit of some, she supposes, Soldat is proof of that tenfold, but on average she considers raining fragments of someone's life for anyone to find is cruel. Even lacking greater context for what she's just seen, it was clearly personal. (To say nothing of the weaving between aurora onlookers and cheery spirits looking for him. Suboptimal.) Finally spotting him, there's nothing more complicated to do than duck the limbs of exceptionally tall spirits and completely hop over some exceptionally small ones in the beeline toward him.]

Hey! Camera down, please. Something of yours, uh--

[It's chilling in a sandwich bag, which she holds out daintily. Grey, blue cracks, beautiful were it not for the contents. To return is to admit having seen, and were the tables turned she would want the other person to be forthright. She settles on a free hand rubbing the back of her neck.]

Nothing's worth doing that. Just my two cents, won't breathe a word besides, but I - I'm sorry anything'd put somebody in that spot.

"Yeah, I can only imagine," he says dryly, as he wraps the stone back up, and deposits it in his bag. "That one could've been worse, it cut out right before Caduceus told us about his dead person tea."

Better to talk about literally anything else than that; Lorenzo and the fucking Iron Shepherds can go rot.

[Masaomi's gaze hones in on the opal, flits up to Jason, then drops back down. He shakes his head, snickers quietly.]

If this is super gross, I'm throwing it at your head.

[He picks up the rock, and his mind is predictably blown.

It's nothing like being kicked or thrown around. He may not feel at all in control, hanging in the air like that, but he does feel impossibly secure. To feel like the very wind is on his side...

Back in the Invincible, he leaps to his feet, grinning madly at Jason.]

Holy shit!

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-24 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Soldat twitches, blinks, stares a little in Fjord's general direction. "Dead person what?" Too late, buddy. You mentioned it. Not you gotta explain.
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Sure thing)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-02-24 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Fjord just grins, a bit smugly. "See, that was my exact reaction. But it's not as bad as it sounds. Cad lived in a graveyard for most of his life, from what I know of it. Tended to flowers that grew on the graves and turned them into tea." He shrugs, and adds lightly, "It's actually really nice tea."

Okay.

[ He's not going to argue with that since he knows he's out of field. Then again, the judgement of kindness for humanity is probably different from the judgement of kindness from the viewpoint of divinity. On the third hand, he's not going to admit his supernatural origins just yet. ]

Still refusing, Rosi. Still refusing. ... it's a lot harder at this point, though. The breaking point is coming.

"Seems to work so far about the way the Sergeant does," Soldat offers. "Voice in my head, interacts with me, with each other. Only comes out rarely, if spoken to directly or something. Startles it. Came out with Sora because he talked about something Russian-- a country on Earth, where it was made. Where it. Where I was programmed." It's possible it'll be different with the Asset, because of the lantern crack, but so far data suggests not.

They consider the idea of fixes with another hit of the cigarette. "Misty thinks it'll go away on its own as my brain gets better. Gets more used to not being fried and ordered around all the time. I'd rather fix it if we can. Just in case." They have to write Solis, too... after the next ferry comes in with their data from the portal. The idea of terrifying, to be honest.

He doesn't need to keep it, not now that he's seen what's inside. He smirks, turning the opal so that it catches the light of the aurora up above. The eerie green glow makes everything shimmer, makes Vanitas' golden eyes look even stranger.

"Of course," He capitulates so easily, much easier than this ever should have been— but Naminé hasn't interacted with him enough to maybe fully understand that.

He tosses the jewel to her, underhand, making it easy for her to catch.
worthallthis: (told you so)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-24 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
The startle drains out of them and they give Fjord a patented Not Impressed With Your Humor But It Is Still A Little Funny look. Soldat is very good at that particular look. "That's not dead people tea, pal, that's just graveyard flowers tea. You were trying to make me jump."
fjorgedinfire: <user name=jamiedodgerart site=tumblr.com> (Happy face)

[personal profile] fjorgedinfire 2020-02-24 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
"It worked," he points out, not fully hiding his childish glee. "And that's how it got introduced to me, too, so it's only fair I get to do that to someone."

Wait...!

[ He's... curious about the golem. The golem is a lot different from the other golem he had befriended. And since he's doing some work of returning the stones, maybe Lucius can pitch in and collect more information along the way. ]

I can help you... if you want?

worthallthis: (eyeroll)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-24 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Soldat extends the flesh hand to punch Fjord's shoulder, but it's a light, amiable punch. They like this guy. It's like having... someone. One of the Sergeant's old unit, maybe, even if they don't remember any of their names or faces anymore. "Asshole." But it's a nice-sounding insult. "Found any other good memories yet in this?"

[ With us. The idea is so naive that if Vanitas were swayed by that kind of thing, it might even be charming. But he's witnessed what that sort of blindness can lead to, he lead Ventus around like a dog on a chain with it before he'd wisened up— and even then, it was too late. They fought, how Vanitas had wanted, the only difference was that both times he lost.

With us, to Vanitas means this place, and the people here. With us never meant the Guardians of Light; it never meant Ventus and Sora and all their stupid little friends.

But... Riku keeps talking and Vanitas feels that familiar crawl, so much like humiliation and embarrassment. He's reminded of his conversation with Bruce in the woods. His eyes cut away, a brief glance to the side, betraying his discomfort before he can reign it in and return his gaze to Riku's face— then down to his hand and the black, glittering opal, innocuous in his palm.

Silence keeps him, and it looks for a moment like Vanitas isn't going to take the rock. If it belongs to Ventus, then he's not sure he wants to see it. Something about Aqua... or Terra.

Then again, when has Vanitas ever been able to turn his back on Ventus? The shine of his Light was always too great for Vanitas to turn away from.

He pulls one glove off before he reaches out to take the jewel. ]
mellowyellow: (really gets the point across)

Find it, he does. When Masaomi recognizes Stone's imposing figure and paradoxically gentle demeanor, he squeezes the opal just a little tighter in his palm. That scene is so familiar, it hurts. Geez... Clearly, this guy never changes.

With most of the opals he's snatched up at random, he's simply tossed them back and moved on. They have nothing to do with him or what he's searching for. This one is different though. As much as he'd like to, Masaomi really can't say that Stone doesn't have anything to do with him anymore. The fact that Stone hasn't laughed in his face is a miracle in and of itself. The least he can do is deliver a magic space rock to the guy so it doesn't end up with someone else.

And, well, Stone might even want it. Right? It seems like a pretty warm memory.

It's while Masaomi is taking a shortcut back to the Invincible that he catches sight of Stone coming from the other direction. A hop and a wave signal his presence before he starts running.

"Yo, gargoyle gramps! I got you a present!"

He takes the punch without flinching, only grinning a bit wider. "I'll let you know if I find any. I didn't even realise that was what was happening here." He folds his arms lightly. "Anything I should keep in mind to know one of them might be yours?"

[ Sora sighs in relief, then returns to his search, the additional light definitely helping his endeavors. ] Okay. I can deal with that.

You musta got one of my weird long ones, huh? The kind where it feels like you've been there for days? [ He may still be worried, but he really is looking forward to getting more of those ones. He needs them! Hearing that Jason found another one is very heartening. ]
arsarcanum: (pic#13738309)

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-02-24 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds familiar. Sora chuckles, watches to see if Jason's gonna go ahead and enjoy that one or not, then smiles fondly when he just holds it. "Yeah, I know how that feels. Take good care of that memory." Also, pause. "Does, uh, that mean that he's related to Hades somehow?" Because hat explains so much and creates maybe three more questions.

Aaand here's the other one. Sora frowns at this one, at its label. Jason - Thalia? Mom?. This one's important too. "Another one for you." And he'll hand that one over too, if he's willing to take it.

[[ ooc: roger! at some point jason does need to express some excitement about donald and goofy, but i'm good with playing it however you like :) ]]
