EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

[This is more familiar territory. Bruce has done the first impression thing a hundred times, especially as the fresh face of Wayne Enterprises. Aziraphale extends a hand and Bruce takes it politely- the smile he offers is small, and his head shakes even as he moves towards the offered seat. It is- far and away, the most familiar introduction he's had with anyone in Beacon and just like that he finds himself thinking about Gotham. How little he wanted to leave it.]

I'm the one who should apologize.

[It would be an easy remark to make, but Bruce- means it. There are so many things he misses from home, so many people, the small details that made up a tapestry of ordinary life. The smell of Alfred's cooking that could reach him all the way upstairs. The firelight in his father's study. The floorboards that creaked on the left side in the east wing. The blare of a horn from an angry driver, the grey skies, Selina's face at the window. These things have immeasurable worth because of what they are- because they're memories. And he's held onto someone else's for so long.

Bruce sits as his opposite, and reaches into his jacket pocket- withdrawing the small, carefully wrapped stone.]

I shouldn't have kept this from you for so long. It was selfish.

There's a still a schedule to keep to, Misty. It's just luckily not a very strenuous schedule right now. After this, in fact, the plan was to go hunt down more memories before bed. That's not looking like quite as pleasant as before, to be honest. Digging out the cocoa rather than the coffee, for comfort purposes, they say quietly, "Used to be able to be still. For hours. Just not thinking about anything but the mission. Watching surveillance or waiting for a target. Could probably still do it. But it'd be really, really boring now."

It's what happens when your brain starts to work a little more thoroughly: you learn what boredom is.

"I don't mean doing nothing, cher." Exactly one elbow to elbow nudge as she digs through the fridge. There's no plan going in, but, hey, grilled cheese has a good track record for sad food so far. "I mean just resting. Talk, read, game of cards, stuff like that where you're not moving so much."

[ Vanitas doesn't answer him at first, there's no you're welcome, to follow. Instead, he stares are Bruce's expression, watching it as it moves from one thing to another. He wouldn't call it hesitancy so much as maybe a kind of trepidation— Bruce doesn't know what to expect from this innocuous little stone. But then, as Vanitas might have predicted, his whole face changes— like just the idea of this girl could have such a drastic effect on him.

Riku makes that face sometimes, when he thinks of Sora.

He waits; not out of any kind of patience, but because he's watching this play happen, trying to commit the way it looks to memory. Connecting this expression with the feeling— Vanitas never had any sort of experience that he could line the pieces up. ]

You love her?

[ He should maybe be jealous about it— jealous the way he'd felt over the idea of losing Riku to Naminé and Skyler— but those two things don't correlate in his head. Emotion is too fluid to be so simple, Vanitas knows that better than anyone. ]

Vanitas is watching him closely, the way his expression seems to jump through a bunch of different hoops before cautiously settling on what looks like it could be anger. But he didn't miss the things in between— emotions Vanitas may have seen before, but had no context to hold up against.

He recognizes the fury, though; he expects Vanitas to use her as leverage. Months ago, before he'd changed, that might even be true. And the fact is that he is using information similar to this against another boy in this town.

But Quentin is different. Maybe things changed in the church, what feels like months ago now. He tilts his chin down, his eyes a little too wide, like he can read something in Quentin that only he's able to perceive. And in some ways, it's true.

"You love her?"

Well enough.

[Despite the local traditions. Which he doesn't really mind, odd as they are. The desire to seek some kind of immortality in the stars is not a new concept to him, though usually it's done after death.]

I don't suppose you have a moment? I might have found a stone with one of your memories.

[personal profile] callada 2020-02-22 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah, damn. He'd intended to pick this one up and slip away without being stopped. Add it to his collection of things to think on for later. But the town is small, he's bound to be stopped every now and then by people not intending anything -

A coincidence, though, to have found the owner of this memory so quickly. He backs away a single step, though compared to the others here that's still a fair amount of ground given the length of his stride.]

Didn't realize you were coming this way. Apologies. I - believe we might have spoken on the network before, but never in person, though I've seen you around. I'm Rosinante.

[The stone is still in his right hand, so he extends his left to shake, angling it low so that Hux doesn't have to reach too far. That's usually enough to catch people off-guard anyway, given most are right handed and the moment of awkwardness is something he can take advantage of to deftly pocket the opal.]

Okay, so there's...rocks outside that have memories inside of them?

Whose memories?

[She shakes her head-]

You don't belong to my world, so you have nothing to apologize for.

[Him not belonging to her world is also what's keeping him safe from her going after him. She's always been wary of humans, regardless of where they are and what they did. After years and years of fighting against the hunters and shadow acolytes, the habit to be wary around them just doesn't die.]

But thank you, for bringing me the stone. It was nice... seeing my father like that again.

Heh. Well, thanks. Guess you could say I have some faith in him doing just that.

[Not becoming too much like himself, though. Law hates the government, hates the Marines, would never enlist the way he had done himself at that age. But Law will undoubtedly make something of himself, if those old legends about the clan he belongs to are true. Law has inherited one hell of a legacy, and he's proud he was able to play a role to ensure that Law would live to see it through.

Hopefully. Maybe it's all just superstition. But he's optimistic.]

He's definitely unyielding, though. That's a good word for it. Stubborn brat.

[There's no smile on his face, but it's somewhat audible in his voice - that's an endearment, not something to be taken too literally. Law is a brat, but the kid's his brat.]

It seems that they have something in common. Regardless of whether they are human or no, Xayah always feels bad to see children around here, dead. He doesn't look older than fifteen, sixteen years old.

"They seemed fine to me," she says with a shrug and small smile, walking over to the patch of the dirt. She unhooks her lantern from the belt and hangs it on a hook above the dirt ground and crouches to pat at the earth. "I don't know how they are going to grow due to lack of light, though. So I hope my lantern provides a bit of reprieve. After all, it's marked as a life-light, right? Maybe it will help," she talks in a quiet voice, patting the ground gently.

Jason can't help but glance around as well, worried at first but then deciding that Riku probably just wants to get out of the crowds to talk. Kinda difficult to carry on a conversation about a battle like that while standing around a crowd of rowdy spirits cheering each other to their deaths. It's easy to fall into step with Riku.

He slows to a stop when they've reached their new destination, cocking his head to the side with a slight smile, "Yeah. I'm starting to get that impression...of course I think a lot of people here have long stories." At least the ones he'd been hanging out with. It was things people said or choices they made that showed that to Jason more than anything. It was why he never hesitated to reveal his status as a demigod because so far while there was the initial surprise, most people seemed to have encountered much stranger things in their lives. This place had a habit of smashing very different belief systems together after all, so why shouldn't it also be weird.

Strangely enough, it's not the Xehanort information that throws him really. The gods could split different aspects of themselves and the Romans even had a two-faced god...of course those were gods and he got the sense that Xehanort may want to BE like one, but probably wasn't one himself. The number thirteen was interesting, but only because numbers were important to mythology and thus demigods: 3, 12, 7, being a few important ones.

"So the king...he was trying to stop him. I'm guessing you and the others were helping with that...though the part of the memory I saw didn't look like it was going very well..." 13 against 8 wasn't terrible odds, but the fight he had just seen...those 13 fragments were stil very powerful. He hopes this isn't how Riku ended up here, Jason doesn't know how comfortable he would be talking about that, especially when for him it's still a subject he'd rather avoid even now.

[Aside from Rakan, she's never seen a single person be this happy to see her. Most cover in fear and run away, or lunge at her. It's... nice. Feels nice. She offers a smile.]

Why would I? I have the best view of aurora from right up there, [she nods to the rooftop. Everything's crystal clear from up there.] And I have; a few others brought me some opals with memories they found of me. You found something too? [She didn't expect that.

Her curiosity wins over when he offers her the bag with her stone and her eyebrow quirks- bar fight? That's too broad of a spectrum- Rakan and she were in many bar fights before.]

I see you met Rakan.

It wasn't something that he really had a choice in, and if asked he would do it again. Minato didn't want people feeling bad for him. It was simply the right thing to do.

"I thought I saw people receive items from the ferry?" Minato asked as he studied her lantern and the patches of fresh dirt and soil. He had a contemplative look on his face as he thought about her dilemma. She was right, there was no natural light here. It made one wonder how a lot of the food managed to be made around here without it to grow. Perhaps they'll be fine? Of course, there was always, "Maybe ask for some solar lamps? I know light doesn't work very well here, or at all, but it's the UV light specifically that I think the plants would need not just it not being dark."

Of course, how that would even be possible wasn't something he knew and he sighed as he shook his head. "I'm not exactly good at science to figure that out though."
notthatjason: (Paralyzer)

[personal profile] notthatjason 2020-02-22 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a divine form that Jason could talk about that might make that clearer, even though any time a mortal or demigod saw them it was just a part of them and thus more solid. In the end, Jason can just discuss the gods in theory, because while he had met plenty of them that didn't mean he had a full understanding of how they were the way they were.

"That might be how it started...I'm not sure it's quite that any more," Jason replies after some thought. Any time someone mentioned religion he always felt weird, because on the one hand the gods did have temples and he did participate in the events and ceremonies that honored them. However, most people didn't also call the gods their father or brothers or sisters. It was, at least for Jason, more about respect and honor towards them than what he would deem as flat out worship. Worship implied not questioning them, not seeing the faults and flaws that existed there.

"Competition, rivalry, and a distrust for what's not ours...I don't know. The distrust and hatred goes back a long, long time. I'd say we can't remember, but a lot of it is pretty well documented in history. I never really thought of them as enemies though or, if I ever did, that part is gone now." Possibly quite literally, since it wouldn't make sense for Juno to wipe his memory of his time in Rome only to return the memory of possibly disliking or distrusting Greek-related aspects of things. Though, he can certainly remember those early days before his memory returned and feeling a general unease about everything related to Camp Half-Blood. He'd rather not think about it too much though.

"I mean, I can hardly hate the Greek demigods when one of them is also my sister."

Yeah. Yeah, that's it exactly.

[He's entirely puzzled by why Sora seems to be excited about this, but he'll let the guy explain. Must have been somewhere, or sometime, very specific - otherwise he wouldn't have pointed out those features as being unique, he figures.]

[It's nice having this- someone to leave behind yourself to follow in your footsteps, to believe in what you did, what you said, what you loved. Her own circumstances didn't allow her much to have children but she wasn't averse to the idea. She just didn't want to bring them in the world where they will be treated like beasts and hunted down for their magic.

Rosinante was a fine man, Xayah had come to conclusion after all this time spent here with him. They aren't the closest of friends, but she respects him a lot- whoever he had in his protection, Xayah doubts they would turn out in the wrong way.]

My father used to sing me songs of trees that grow through the stone. Their path rough, but they bloom the prettiest.

[Her attempt at consolation... probably not as good as it could be, but she honestly has no idea how else to do it. She spent most of her life hunting down other humans and killing them to try and perserve the rest of Vastayan people and heritage.]

Grilled cheese is always approved of. Especially if she adds some tomato or something. "Oh." They set the kettle on to heat the water. "That just doesn't make me think 'still'. Being still means not moving." That's a pretty specific command. "Be still". That's not what Misty means, though, which is a relief. "But cards is fine. And music."

"Thanks, I suppose. I don't really need stones for that, though. Wish they weren't just scattered around all of town."

If a memory like the one Minimus found is out there, what others might people stumble across? There are an abundance he would never want anyone to know. This one is slightly more tolerable than some, but even so it exposes too much. At least he can hope they won't hold much meaning or interest to most people here. He can recover them, and they will be forgotten by those who had found them. People tend to focus more on themselves than on others.

I don't know really. Sometimes I think people don't give enough credit to never.

[Like, would he had lived if he never went searching for that information in the labyrinth and heard the prophecy that literally spelled out his death? How different would things have been, had Apollo and Juno not laid the ground work for the prophecy of seven to begin unfolding? He knew as a demigod that prophecies came with the territory, but he also knew that they tended to spell out more harm for the individuals involved than good.

He wishes he knew what to say in this sort of scenario, but probably the only thing that is going to ease this is some time. The memory was old, but these feelings and what he was dealing with were now very new. He's not sure he's glad, but he'll do his damnedest to make sure he can get Daylight to smile again in a more genuine manner.

He hesitates. Thinking of the story Thalia had told him and his own encounter with his mother as a mania. He thinks about Juno's words and the various prophecies...the manipulation to fulfill them. He sighs, feeling so much older.
]

I'm not going to lie to you. It doesn't. It gets easier to bear. It scabs over like any wound. But it's there now and you kinda have to learn to keep moving forward despite it.

[There's a pause and he adds as if quoting someone.]

We cannot control our parentage, but we can choose our legacy...

[Does he love her? It's a question that sticks between the ribs- a knife that doesn't hurt, just promises to leave a mark. The opal rests in his hand and Bruce draws it into his lap, considers the question. Selina floods so many of his earliest memories, she's been an enormous part of who he is, how he managed to keep going. She's been the reason he's alive more than once.]

Yes.

[Bruce still isn't sure if it's that simple. It it's allowed to be so simple when everything else between them is so complicated. Love might never be enough for, not for either of them. But its worth can't be understated either.

But this is the first time he's spoken about her. The first time he'd held this thought aloud. Bruce doesn't soften further and he doesn't bow his head- he isn't ashamed of it. But there's something careful about the way he holds the question and all of it's possibilities.]

I think she feels the same way.

"Yeah. Thanks," he sighs. It's truly a shame they hadn't had more time together. He'd learned a lot from Law as well. Not just medical stuff, though that too - the kid's head was full of that kind of knowledge and he was always eager to share whatever morbid new fact he'd learned. But Law taught him how to laugh and smile again. How to be himself. How to look after someone. How to love and be loved in a way he hadn't felt since he lost his parents - and maybe not truly even then, since he was too young at six to know fully what that kind of affection really meant.

That makes him pause for a moment, quiet. He's resisted getting to know and care for most everyone here partly because that's just how he is, and partly, maybe, because he's afraid of letting go of Law. Of letting someone else fill that spot in his heart. Is that right? Is it healthy? Ugh.

Time to break out the cigarettes and light one while he mulls this over. Absently, he holds the pack out to Soldat as well. "Want one?"

Jason tries to imagine what it would have been like if his memories had been taken and he hadn't been with someone like Piper or Leo. Heck, even with them he'd certainly been thinking about how he must have been going crazy. His expression softens at that and he nods, understanding a little of where Soldat was coming from if his was wiped again and again with no one to contradict him. Or, likely, telling him that those things he was seeing weren't real or were lies or something else.

"I wonder if seeing other people's memories will help."

"Percy was in a very committed relationship with Annabeth, so if he was like that it wasn't while I knew him. Leo on the other hand...well let's just say he tried to hit on my sister the moment he first met her and pretty much any girl that we encountered." It didn't matter if half the goddesses or demigods they met tried to kill them, that only seemed to encourage Leo to try harder. Which, probably said all you needed to know about Leo "The Ladies Love Me" Valdez. Though he wasn't sure Leo actually had it in him to go snooping around a hot spring like that either.

And Frank, well, Frank was far too innocent to consider anything like that and probably only had eyes for Hazel.
