EVENT LOG: TURN THE LIGHTS OFF

EVENT LOG:
TURN THE LIGHTS OFF

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: january 20-29.
content: the lanterns begin to malfunction.
warnings: body horror and psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.

you'll become one

January 20th arrives the same as all the days before it. There's no great pulse of warning that throbs through the air, no ominous wind that causes the bonfire to shudder. The spirits are neither agitated nor do they hide. You could almost miss the change, if the lanterns weren't always by your side. There's no explanation that comes with the way that it's changed, but it's impossible not to worry when it's happened so suddenly.

Maybe it takes a few days, or maybe it only takes a few hours, but suddenly it isn't just the lanterns that have changed. You, yourself, have become somehow different. It's possible that you won't even have the right state of mind to wonder how long it will last. At the very least, it appears you aren't alone. All across Beacon, lanterns are changing, and changing the people with them.

Out in the distance, the lighthouse's beam has turned green.

Link starts off again in the direction of the cabin. For a few minutes he simply continues trotting in silence, then he stops abruptly again.

Inside his lantern the scarlet flame starts to flicker frantically and he whimpers.
worthallthis: (yikes)

Oh hell. They're almost there, the Soldier can see the torch just barely in the distance, wavering between too close and too far, but clearly far enough away that they can't hear it or smell the hot wood. Is there trouble so close to home? "Link?" they ask warily, before realizing that the red flickering is not in fact their perception giving them fits, but rather Link's lantern.

They promptly let go of his fur. "Hey. It's okay. You're okay. We'll wait a second."
sublimebeast: (I have a great need to blaspheme.)

Link drops the lantern and bolts away from it as the flames begin to flash. A golden plume of light engulfs the lantern and the wolf becomes, all too suddenly, human.

Link pinwheels his limbs a moment before landing face first in the snow, unharmed except for in his pride.

"Ugh."
worthallthis: (startled)

The Soldier backs a step away from the lantern which tries to turn into a step towards Link as he falls, and nearly falls over themselves. They hold carefully still after that, trying to focus on the now-human... ish... shape. Link is not technically human, not with those ears.

"Link. Hey. Hey, are you okay."
sublimebeast: (I need a container for my heart)

Link sits up, snow falling from his floppy cap.

"Yeah, I'm all right."

He scrambles back to his feet.

"Sorry about all this...I can't control these damn transformations."

"Not your fault. That's what the lanterns are doing. All the metal grew and turned jagged earlier. For me." They gesture vaguely at their arm and shoulder, indicating the metal arm under their coat, only the metal hand currently visible. It hadn't been a fun time, given the metal underneath their skin had done the same thing. "That's what this vertigo. Thing. Is. I think."
sublimebeast: (Depression is anger without enthusiasm)

Link walks back to his lantern and retrieves it from the snow.

"Being a wolf is better than the other stuff mine's been doing."

As he says this, he eyes the golden flame with visible distrust. If it turns green again he will have to leave. He doesn't trust himself with the green flame.

"I can still lead you back to the cabin, if you don't mind leaning on me. I'm stronger than I look."
worthallthis: (wary)

The thought of using a wolf for support is one thing. The thought of using a skinny, blonde young man makes a number of things rebel inside Soldat: the people-are-dangerous thing, the manage-on-your-own-or-get-punished thing, the Steve-can't-hold-you-up thing.... They shake their head a little, point. "The cabin's right there. Think I'll be okay."

They do dredge up a smile. "Thanks. You were a lot of help."
sublimebeast: (I'm a Fun Guy from Yuggoth.)

Link returns the quirk of a smile.

"Okay...if you're sure."

He's worried but the Soldier seems hesitant now and he doesn't want to push the matter.

"Uhm...Do me a favor. Don't tell anyone about the wolf thing."
worthallthis: (confused)

They blink at him a little. "Why not. It's a useful and. Really interesting skill." They won't, of course, since he asked. But. Why? If the Soldier could turn into a wolf, they'd be doing it all the time. It'd be awesome.

sublimebeast: (Rationalism never made any sense to me.)

"Well, you know..."

Link shrugs.

"I don't want anyone freaking out."

Granted, in this world, there seem to be plenty of things scarier than him in the woods... He's just not ready to have the wolf conversation yet. He'd spent so much effort on keeping it a secret in Hyrule.
worthallthis: (look up)

"If it's what you want, I won't say anything." The Soldier kind of understands. But they do point back in the direction of the Invincible and points out, "We do have a dragon and a robot and a vampire, though. Think it'll probably be fine."
