EVENT LOG: TURN THE LIGHTS OFF

EVENT LOG:
TURN THE LIGHTS OFF

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: january 20-29.
content: the lanterns begin to malfunction.
warnings: body horror and psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.

you'll become one

January 20th arrives the same as all the days before it. There's no great pulse of warning that throbs through the air, no ominous wind that causes the bonfire to shudder. The spirits are neither agitated nor do they hide. You could almost miss the change, if the lanterns weren't always by your side. There's no explanation that comes with the way that it's changed, but it's impossible not to worry when it's happened so suddenly.

Maybe it takes a few days, or maybe it only takes a few hours, but suddenly it isn't just the lanterns that have changed. You, yourself, have become somehow different. It's possible that you won't even have the right state of mind to wonder how long it will last. At the very least, it appears you aren't alone. All across Beacon, lanterns are changing, and changing the people with them.

Out in the distance, the lighthouse's beam has turned green.

"Either that or it's just a sign, a symptom, and something else is causing it. I couldn't say which, but if these house our... life, or whatever people call it, it would make sense." There's not enough information to really know for sure, though, ugh. Stone hates not knowing things, and it happens far too much around here. "But looks like yours has some color change and cracks, too." He peers at her, leaning back a little to try and get an even better look. "You look okay. How do you feel?"

"Souls," she muses, in place of 'life'. She doesn't sound particularly pleased about it either. This ought to be something of an expertise by now. Dead shouldn't be here. This place is unnatural. A glance cast to her lantern, she shrugs and answers honestly. "Exhausted, jittery, but that's pretty normal. Or-- jittery. Tired's new. Don't know what this place would get from that, though."

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-27 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Raksura don't really have a concept of souls, so "life" is the best he really manages. "I don't know what this place would get from my turning into a Fell ruler, either, but here we are. Maybe it's all random and it's just to put us on edge."

A moody kick aimed at a clod of snow is exactly as dissatisfying as she expects it to be; powdery explosion on contact. "Sucks, is what it does." The anticipation is killing her, really. She'd almost rather just have an assault over and done with so she can sleep.

"Probably nothing on it in the library, huh?"
scarsolderthanyou: (skeptical)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-28 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't know, I almost never go in there." He sounds somewhere between annoyed and amused. "I don't read well unless the print is very big or very clear, or sometimes both. This will be an adventure."

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-01-28 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"You got bad eyes?" He's got her proper attention, at least - that's a surprise. Underwater or in air, she'd expect the exact opposite to be something of a point of pride. "Or just real disinclined to the task?"

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-29 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Stone half-turns to show her the blind eye, tapping his cheek to draw attention to the cloudiness. "Mostly blind since birth, on that side. Plus Raksura are aerial predators, we dive on things from very high up. Seeing things up close is harder. And, you know. I'm old."
shadowsran: (5)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-01-29 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Old doesn't mean the drive to try's got to go anywhere," she mutters, but otherwise accepts this readily enough. Worrisome, that eye. "How bad is close-up, on average? For like, safety reasons."

She'll read to you if she's got to, but there's a danger to blindness even here.
scarsolderthanyou: (skeptical)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-30 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The drive to try is there, just not related to books. There are plenty of people who can do the reading thing. He'd rather do the flying thing. "I can see you just fine. Things closer than you are right now get more blurry, and I have blind spots. I've been compensating for the blind spots for generations, though, so they aren't so much a problem. I just can't read things without the print being very large, very clear, or both. The network is a pain in the tail when everyone is using text."
shadowsran: (67)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-01-30 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn if 'pain in the tail' isn't a little cute.

"Well, double the people means you'll fine readable ones in half the time. Or I'll read out loud, I mean, doesn't matter too much. Always something worth learning."

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm." Reading has never been a particular passtime for him, he leaves that mostly to the mentors and weirdos who prefer that to napping, but if it'll be useful, he supposes they might as well. "We'll have a look around, then. See if there's anything I can read." He pauses to open the library door for her, finally there.

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-03 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Courteous! A bow of her head indicates thanks as she steps in. Immediately deciding this isn't worth troubling the Librarian over yet, she'll start at the nearest shelf.

"Anything about town that might interest you? A starting point. Lakes, animals, ahh...geography?" Unlikely anything will be relevant, whether Stone could read it or not. But then, so long as it fills time...

"Doubt there's too much from locals here, but maybe context'll be something."
scarsolderthanyou: (thinking)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Geography has probably been picked over, with people looking for maps of this place," Stone muses, peering at the titles opposite Misty's attention. If he stands far enough back, he can even read them. "Let's go with animals. Maybe it'll tell us whether there used to be actual things to hunt around here."
shadowsran: (Default)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-04 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Almanacs," she blurts, seemingly remembering their existence for the first time in some long while. "Local enough to be useful, broad enough we might actually be able to find one." Otherwise it's an afternoon or reading up via encyclopedias or children-geared lit.

Which would be nice, but not productive. "Anything's better than nothing, anyway. If not that I'll settle for anything with fur and teeth."
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't suppose it will matter much, since none of those animals are here anymore, but I didn't have anything better to do today than to daydream being able to eat fresh meat," Stone says dryly, and reaches up higher than Misty can reach to get one of the books down. "Should we bother the librarian, or just poke around ourselves?"
shadowsran: (6)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-05 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just ourselves." Time consumption! Part of the plan! Focus, Stone, even though she hasn't said any of this and there's no cause to believe anyone around is psychic. "Daydreaming'd be just as good, honestly. Does the freshness matter? Just not a fan of cured stuff?"
scarsolderthanyou: (curious)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-06 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Normally Raksura eat our meat raw," Stone says with a shake of his head, putting the book back and moving down the shelf to try another. "And most of what shows up here is in tins, already cooked, or salted, or yeah, cured. Not all of it, sure, but I can't just eat up everyone else's food. It lasts longer for you people when you cook it, and I can deal with cooking better than most of my species."
shadowsran: (12)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-07 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Fascinating, actually.

"Think frozen'd be good for anything? Not fresh fresh, but at least not flavored. Maybe Rastus can get blood, if that's a thing? Dunno, blood banks have to be for somethin'."
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-07 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Stone shrugs. "It's still not the same as fresh, but better than salted. I like salt, but not on my meat." He considers thoughtfully. "I wonder if that fake blood of that annoying woman's is edible. She said it was for the vampires, but I'm not a vampire, just a carnivore."
shadowsran: (76)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-07 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Which annoying woman?" Ba-dum-tisssss, plenty of people are annoying, roll on snare, good joke. "It must be if it's for vampires -- same principle, pretty much, you're just meatier."

It weirds her out significantly less, as a matter of fact. Carnivores make sense.
scarsolderthanyou: (thinking)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-02-10 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Vampires are definitely weird. "Well, maybe if I get really cranky one day I'll ask her. Of course, she'd just make me crankier. It's the mean one with the. Labo-rat-ory?" Look it's an unfamiliar word and Rosalind only ever wrote it via text, never said it aloud. He's guessing, here.
shadowsran: (76)

[personal profile] shadowsran 2020-02-10 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
"What's she got blood for?" That it's Rosalind clicks; what she'd have to do with any quantity of blood to be noticeable and pegged as a potential source does not. High surprise, here.

"To feed vampires. She put a message up about it a while back. Wanted to find out everyone's blood type at the same time, for donations to injured people or something." He waves a clawed hand, tail flicking back and forth. "It probably won't come as any surprise that my blood is completely different from the humans'. But at least I can still eat your food."
