EVENT LOG: FEAST OF LIGHTS

EVENT LOG:
FEAST OF LIGHTS

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: december 23 - 30
content: Holiday cheer is here!
warnings: n/a. please cw tags appropriately.

a show of lights

When characters wake on the "morning" of the 23rd, they'll find all of Beacon is lit up beautifully. Spirits have carefully placed candles all around the town, lighting up the familiar buildings and streets with a warm, comforting glow. If others wish to help, they're more than welcome, but it won't take too long: they've clearly spent all night getting things ready. If asked, Rastus will explain the spirits do this every few years, and yes, those candles are lit from the bonfire, but he'll get them back before the end of the event.

Once the spirits finish their task, it's time to hand out dreidels! While the four-sided toy has the usual Hebrew letters on it, characters will soon realize that they've little correlation to the typical rules. Instead: each side offers a certain kind of prize (listed below). Characters can play against the spirits or among themselves, but either way, they'll find a personal dreidel in their possession for the duration of the event.

secret santa

Of course, the spirits aren't the only ones in a holiday mood. Thanks to the tireless (and secretive) efforts of Eleven, quite a number of people wake up to find a present nearby. The wrappings vary from elegant to, well, an effort, and the gifts range form big to small, but there's no doubt each was given with at least a little thoughtfulness in mind.

"There is at least a year and a half of future. Unless we do something stupid," the Soldier says. That's more future than they're used to having, honestly, and it's still hard to conceptualize that far ahead. "And I knew what the dreidels were, and that nobody is playing the game quite right." Even if the stupid brain hasn't given them any pictures to go with them yet, despite several games played each day. Figures that the one time they actually want a memory is the one time it won't show itself.

Because the Soldier's feelings about not having very many memories are decidedly mixed. The vast majority of the ones they do have are horrible, and the good ones take a lot of help to bring back. But they're still theirs, if they're not too cowardly to claim them. So. Mixed feelings. Most of which stay shuttered behind a calm expression, regardless.

They shrug a little, finally, and say, "I'll remember your tradition. And Crowley's, with the candy inside shoes. And the gift-giving. They all seem like good ones. I wanted to ask you about patrols, too."

Jason tries not to sigh. He's used to deadlines for quests and frankly it gets a little old after awhile, especially when you were of the thought that all that would be done when you died. Jason wasn't that lucky, so instead he was stuck once again in a doomsday prophecy that he'd have to help prevent...but in this case to what end? Did they get to return to their lives? Continue on to the afterlife they were SUPPOSED to be under? Either way, Jason planned to have some words with Hades and the Underworld as soon as he saw them. How many other demigods might have come before him to this place?

Besides, as far as he could tell they'd been really toeing that stupid line as of late. Unless they could start to come together and act with the good of the group in mind he didn't have high hopes for their success rate. He knew he shouldn't think that way, but he wasn't exactly feeling optimistic after the past month.

"The stupid part is what worries me," he finally admits. He does offer a small smile at the fact that the Soldier will remember their traditions. He has to agree, those are some good ones.

Jason raises an eyebrow, "Yeah? I haven't been out lately, but I was probably going to start again soon. I was recovering." First from his injuries and then from the healing of those injuries since he'd wanted to focus on regaining the proper use of his hand. Based on how his snowmen were turning out, he was more or less back to normal. He was pleased by that, since for awhile he'd been worried that Pluto might have mislead him and he'd be down a hand for the rest of his time down here. "But what about them?"

So far, it seems less like they'll be doing anything stupid enough to get a reset, just stupid enough for people to get themselves killed individually, and more likely that nothing at all will wind up happening. The Soldier has no idea how they're even going to get anywhere with their big mission.

So focus on the small missions, in the meantime, while smarter and more creative people work on the big one. Like this. "At the town hall. You wanted to coordinate. Javert and I have a schedule. Could add you in, too."

Jason had figured there were other people running patrols. He'd seen it enough or passed by people on walks to figure that much. He nodded, offering the Soldier a small smile, he's glad to be of help. "Yes. I'd like that. If we're all already doing it anyway it makes more sense to be coordinated about it."

Camp Jupiter worked on shifts anyway, so it's not like that would be anything new.

"Better coverage for the village, and everyone has a thing to do at a set time," the Soldier agrees, relieved. While they hadn't consciously expected to be rebuffed, it still took effort to take the initiative. And being prodded by Rosinante to let them know they even could. "I go twice a day, two full revolutions around inhabited areas, one out to the main outlying buildings." They haven't added all the new locations to their patrol yet, but the armory, museum, and scrapyard at least get a visit once a day.

Even if Bruce probably figures he and his friends have the museum covered. They still go out there, just in case.

For a moment Jason felt guilty. He had proposed a rotation or sign up of some kind, making a more official call to patrolling, but he hadn't actually committed to following up on that. He could easily blame all the activity as of late, but that seemed a poor excuse. He had to remind himself, however, that this was hardly Camp Jupiter or Camp Half-Blood, he wasn't quite expected to be the guy in charge here. In some ways that suited him, but in other ways he felt like he was letting someone down...even if that someone was himself.

None of this showed in his expression except as a way of looking momentarily thoughtful and distant, an expression he wore quite a lot. After a moment he nodded.

"I typically begin and end my day with a patrol, usually on my way back from Javert's training exercises. I've mostly stuck to the main areas, but now that we're starting to expand it might be a good idea to start branching out...maybe even have people do simultaneous sweeps or at least cover more ground at the same time." It still made him nervous, going out on his own. Not that he didn't think he could handle himself, but it just wasn't how things had ever been done back home. You didn't do solo because that was how you got picked off. A lone wolf was something only in fiction, in reality it was much better to be with the pack or, in the case of demigods, comrades in arms.

"I sometimes like to get a peak from the air, but with the recent attacks I've been more careful about that," Jason admitted.

"I know myself," the Soldier admits after a moment, looking just slightly ashamed to admit it. "I can't split a patrol route. I have to do all of it myself, or I won't feel safe." Shitty thing to have to confess, given they're assuming that Jason doesn't have hypervigilance problems, but honesty is much better than the opposite. Fellow soldiers have to know each others' strengths and weaknesses. "Could stagger it with yours and the Inspector's, though, so each of us are at different places at different times. If you have others you're coordinating with, could fit them in, too."

And if Jason wanted to team up together for one, honestly, they wouldn't say no. It is technically safer, especially given the potential for hallucinations and not knowing what's real. They just haven't even considered asking about it. It's that initiative problem they've got.

There's no judgement, Jason just nods with some level of understanding. He could share because he was used to working as a unit, to relying on his fellow legionaries to do their job. This Soldier was different, but Jason wasn't going to hold that against him.

"Staggering the patrols isn't a bad idea actually. As we've discovered more territory it's gotten harder to keep track of all of the things going on, so it'd make sense to spread us out if we had enough people involved." Jason would need to reach out, he'd sort of been sitting on that for awhile and now might be the time to coordinate this properly. He couldn't use the poor weather as an excuse, something could still happen.

"I haven't asked yet...but I'll let you know if we get more volunteers. If we got enough people, we could do a combination of staggering and maybe sharing the patrol."
