a show of lights

When characters wake on the "morning" of the 23rd, they'll find all of Beacon is lit up beautifully. Spirits have carefully placed candles all around the town, lighting up the familiar buildings and streets with a warm, comforting glow. If others wish to help, they're more than welcome, but it won't take too long: they've clearly spent all night getting things ready. If asked, Rastus will explain the spirits do this every few years, and yes, those candles are lit from the bonfire, but he'll get them back before the end of the event.

Once the spirits finish their task, it's time to hand out dreidels! While the four-sided toy has the usual Hebrew letters on it, characters will soon realize that they've little correlation to the typical rules. Instead: each side offers a certain kind of prize (listed below). Characters can play against the spirits or among themselves, but either way, they'll find a personal dreidel in their possession for the duration of the event.

Of course, the spirits aren't the only ones in a holiday mood. Thanks to the tireless (and secretive) efforts of Eleven, quite a number of people wake up to find a present nearby. The wrappings vary from elegant to, well, an effort, and the gifts range form big to small, but there's no doubt each was given with at least a little thoughtfulness in mind.

I don't know if they expect them around the Christmas holiday but...

( he shrugs and mutters something under his breath before flicking a finger. a few of the dreidels nearby start spinning and tumbling slowly and then gradually quicker. )

I also know I don't care.

[ he smiles. ah, yes—the future post-christmas is looking less bleak without davina.

sitting back in his chair, it's almost like being near magic relaxes him. his eyes stay on the spinning dreidels. ] What's the biggest prank you've ever pulled with your magic?

[ there's no possibility "i haven't done that at all" is even an answer when it comes to ambrose. ]

The biggest?

( he hums, letting the dreidels spin on effortlessly. when he notices one person trying to grab for their dreidel, he pulls it further into the air and smirks. )

I once locked everyone inside of a local supermarket and made them all think there was a feral fox loose inside of it.

( was that mean? that was kind of mean but it had been hilarious at the time. )

[ he watches ambrose manipulate the dreidel from afar, wondering if and when the dredeil will stop listening to his magic. perhaps never—this realm doesn't seem overly bothered by it.

kol snorts. ] For how long did that last?

[ it's not mean if you get approval from your friend, so…

approved. ]

An hour or two? No one got...that hurt.

( bumps and bruises didn't count! )

And it wasn't like the store didn't have insurance so all's well that ends well. I got a great laugh out of it.

[ someone got hurt? people got hurt? oo, this really speaks to his vampiric side. while kol doesn't quite enjoy hurting people… well, he doesn't not enjoy it.

appearing riveted, ] Just how worried were people about this feral fox? Dangerously worried? Went to the knife section worried?

[ please tell him someone got knifed. please, please, please. ]

More like stepped all over each other to get out of the way worried. No one wanted rabies.

( not that that fox had rabies. or was real. but they didn't know that. )

You ever seen a bunch of people fighting just to get a few feet ahead? It's really quite the sight.

[ kol considers his question for a moment. ]

Many times.

[ he's old, just in case everyone forgot. he did cause quite a lot of those fight club brawls, too… he misses the mischievous life sometimes.

shrugging his shoulders, he plays what he's about to say off as though it hadn't resulted in him being daggered. ] Sometimes it was my family. My brothers have very big egos and a necessary need to stay ahead. [ looking at ambrose curiously, he shakes his head. ] Now I wish you'd met them. I'd like to see them locked in a supermarket chasing a non-existent fox.

[ the fox is a nice touch, since he is a wily one. ]

How many brothers do you have?

( that was one thing ambrose hadn't had growing up. he'd had parents and a family but no siblings, not like kol seems to be describing. )

I was on my phone until my aunts took me in and then I had a troublesome cousin. I love her but my god, she was always getting into things.

[ one too many. as quick as kol is to drag his brothers through the mud, he thinks perhaps it's not the best idea. showing his distaste for his family might entice questions… and he's trying to be different—he's trying to be kol, not "rightfully resentful brother of klaus." ]

I had four.

[ flop finn, nik, elijah, and henrik, rip. his expression doesn't betray the fact the youngest is dead. for kol, henrik will always be counted. ]

And a sister.

[ unbeknownst to kol, he has another—an older one who actually adores him and doesn't drive him mental.

with a little more pep, he smiles, ] All of them are always getting into things, much like your troublesome cousin.

Wow. That is a lot of siblings.

( ambrose doesn't even know what he'd do if there were that many spellmans running around. if there were more troublesome spellmans like sabrina or more cool ones like himself, it would still be quite the thing. )

Did you have a favorite?

[ kol's quiet for a moment. how can he have a favourite when his living siblings consistently stab him in the back? but they'd all been there when he died that second time… ]

Henrik. [ a little too sombre for his tastes, ] He was the youngest and least annoying. He knew how to have fun.

And Rebekah, when she wasn't choosing to be a bitch. [ he shrugs, then clarifies, ] She likes my other brother a lot more than me.

( he chuckles. )

Did she choose to be that quite often?

Too often. [ he says it on a soft laugh. for all their differences, he will always love rebekah. she may have put a dagger in his chest a few times out of spite, but she had always been kinder to him than niklaus and elijah. she was a bitch for doing that, too. ]

What about your troublesome cousin? [ it's much safer to talk about someone else's family than his own very complex one. besides, it's far less depressing. ] How much trouble did she get into?

A lot.

( he loves you sabrina but good lord. )

Do you know much about resurrection? Well, neither does she but she tried to do that anyway with disastrous results.

[ ambrose has him, hook, line, and sinker, and he honestly doesn't expect resurrection to be brought up. finally, something he has intimate knowledge of.

kol laughs. ]

Dare I ask what kind of results those were?

[ as someone who has been resurrected at least twice… what kind of results could be so disastrous? he had a nice haircut, which was the opposite to a disaster. ]

The body came back. The soul did not.

( so, imagine a body that had nothing inside of it. )

It was...not good.

[ let's just be clear about one thing: kol's very, very, very glad that that was not the case with him.

eyebrows shooting up, he's definitely hooked. ] How did they come back?

[ he has a feeling he knows the answer. they returned as a shell, perhaps even as a monster. ]

Wrong.

( that's really the only way to describe it. )

Empty.

Empty?

[ his brows crease so far down his face almost drops to the ground. how can someone fuck up a resurrection that badly? except he can believe it. imagine if davina hadn't done his right and he'd come back all… not himself. ]

How the hell—What was inside of the body? A spirit? A demon? Anything?

The body was there. But, I don't know how he was living. There was nothing in there that makes a person...human. Or alive.

( he shakes his head. )

It was really quite horrifying. My cousin was devastated that it didn't work.

[ wow.

in all of his years… he's heard of a few resurrection cases go wrong, but perhaps he had to be there to really experience the true horror. ]

I have a feeling this story doesn't have a happy, soul-returned-to-body kind of ending. What happened to the thing brought back?

It wasn't a happy ending. I don't know exactly what it was that came back but we were able to send it back to where it belonged. And the body died again.

( harvey shouldn't have had to deal with all that. )

And my cousin knows not to try something like that again.
