EVENT LOG: FEAST OF LIGHTS

EVENT LOG:
FEAST OF LIGHTS

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: december 23 - 30
content: Holiday cheer is here!
warnings: n/a. please cw tags appropriately.

a show of lights

When characters wake on the "morning" of the 23rd, they'll find all of Beacon is lit up beautifully. Spirits have carefully placed candles all around the town, lighting up the familiar buildings and streets with a warm, comforting glow. If others wish to help, they're more than welcome, but it won't take too long: they've clearly spent all night getting things ready. If asked, Rastus will explain the spirits do this every few years, and yes, those candles are lit from the bonfire, but he'll get them back before the end of the event.

Once the spirits finish their task, it's time to hand out dreidels! While the four-sided toy has the usual Hebrew letters on it, characters will soon realize that they've little correlation to the typical rules. Instead: each side offers a certain kind of prize (listed below). Characters can play against the spirits or among themselves, but either way, they'll find a personal dreidel in their possession for the duration of the event.

secret santa

Of course, the spirits aren't the only ones in a holiday mood. Thanks to the tireless (and secretive) efforts of Eleven, quite a number of people wake up to find a present nearby. The wrappings vary from elegant to, well, an effort, and the gifts range form big to small, but there's no doubt each was given with at least a little thoughtfulness in mind.

It's true, just spinning a top and seeing the result doesn't feel much like a game but the spirits clearly have their own rules for how things work in general. So he gives his a twirl, while guarding the edge of the bar with an arm to keep both little tops from flying off onto the floor.

And it's strange how, when his settles onto one side, there seems to be a necklace with a golden pendant next to his arm on the wooden surface of the bar. He's sure it wasn't there before, but he doesn't exactly recall seeing it appear, either. It didn't pop abruptly into existence at the edge of his vision, it just is.

He gives it a curious look, then waits to see if the same sort of thing happens to Stone.

Stone's falls on a different side, with a different symbol on it. It looks like nothing happens, though Stone does give a little shiver and rubs at his arm like it's chilly. "Looks like you won that time, I guess? That wasn't there a second ago, was it?"

"No, it wasn't. So, I suppose I did. It's kind of pretty." Not his style, though - most jewelry isn't, really. But it might make for a nice gift.

"Best of three?" he asks, ready to spin again.
scarsolderthanyou: (amused)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2019-12-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll take it, if you don't want it," Stone says with a wry smile. "I used to have a nice collection of jewelry. Most of it was a lot prettier than that, though."

He picks up the dreidel again. "Best of three, then." A second spin, and this time his lands on the "half" symbol-- not that he has any idea what the symbols actually mean.
callada: (beware the silent observer)

"Go ahead," he says as he pushes the necklace across the bar toward Stone. The game's just for fun anyway, so he doesn't exactly mind if he gives his victory prize to the supposed loser - if Stone had even lost. He's not exactly convinced that that's what had happened.

When his own lands on one of the foreign symbols, he looks at it, then at Stone's, before noticing that a small pile of coins have now accumulated on the bar. Assuming them to be chocolate, he goes to pick one up, but finds it weighs a fair bit more than the sweet had, and it's much cooler to the touch. "I think this is actual money," he realizes aloud as he holds the coin closer to his lantern to inspect it.

An even better gift, this one - but as soon as he has that thought, he realizes with a sharp pang of melancholy that he can't give these to the person who he had immediately thought of. Law would have loved to add these to his collection, wouldn't he?
scarsolderthanyou: (thinking)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2019-12-31 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not like we have anything to do with money, here," Stone muses. "Nobody cares about gold around here, right?" He lost again, it seems, and though he doesn't notice it, he's started to glow faintly.
callada: (ahora empiezo a retratar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-01 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"No, but it might have its uses as a metal." Or decor, for those so inclined. He'll keep it. If he's stuck here for a lifetime, if Law has the good fortune to live to be an old man and come to join him some day in the far future, then he'll give them to him, and by that time it will probably be funny that he's kept them so long, but such is his sentimentality.

"Last spin, then," he says, but before he actually goes through with it, he does a double-take at Stone. "Is that - normal?" he asks, pointing right at him. He'd taken the glow for ambient light from their lanterns and the nearby torch, but it's ever so slightly brighter than that, even in areas that should be fully in shadow.
scarsolderthanyou: (surprised)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Is what-- oh. Huh." Stone looks down at himself, at the glow-- it's tinted kind of blue, like his eyes-- surrounding his hand. "No, that's not normal. A mentor could make something glow-- those are our magic-users, back home-- but for one, I'm not a mentor, and for two, they don't usually make people glow. I'm going to guess it's from the game."
callada: (paranoia? no they're actually after me)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-02 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"That's... interesting." Mildly concerning. Things appearing, fine, whatever. He can deal with trinkets and chocolate. Physical changes? Between dying and the night market's strange candy, he's had enough of that.

"Should we stop?" Glowing slightly blue is probably harmless but what if other effects aren't? He's not committed to this best of three thing.
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-02 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I've lost twice, now," Stone says, "so that's already two out of three, anyway." He turns his hand over, as if that might change the glow, but it doesn't. "The candy effects during the market thing went away after a while. I wonder how long this will last."
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Has he lost? Who really knows. Maybe glowing is a high honor among spirits - it's light, after all, even if the smallest amount. But Rosinante doesn't mind calling that good enough, just in case there really are worse things that could happen.

"Did you mess with those candies much? I think I only saw people affected by them for an hour, maybe two at most. But - well, I guess, we shouldn't assume spirits would do the same as those vendors. At least everyone can see you, now."

And boy does that sure come with potential cons in case said spirits decide to attack them again, but the lanterns make them all plenty easy to see anyway.
scarsolderthanyou: (curious)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-03 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"I kept eating new candies and getting new weird things happening to me," Stone answers, looking a little amused. "I don't know how long the last one lingered, it wasn't one I could see myself without a mirror. I wonder if this sticks around if I'm in my winged form." That's going to be a lot of glow, if so, but it's tempting to try just for the novelty factor.
callada: (at least I laugh at myself)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-04 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
The very idea brings a smirk quickly to his face. "Guess you should try it and find out."

Please become a glowing dragon. Really, that's all he's hoping for now, suddenly, though he manages a good job of containing his excitement at the possibility.
scarsolderthanyou: (amused)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-04 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, how can he refuse that face? Stone looks amused at Rosinante's grin, but he does push his chair back from their table, collecting his toy and the necklace Rosinante so kindly gifted him with. "Guess I should, huh? I'll have to go outside, I won't fit in here." You coming, Rosi?
callada: (me abandonó sin avisar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-05 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. He pockets the dreidel, then picks up his lantern and follows along. Somehow he hadn't expected Stone to actually do this right now, at his request - but he's certainly glad.

"I'll stand back," he says as he ducks through the front door and stays near it. Wouldn't want to get bowled over suddenly by a tail or something.

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-06 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if he waits, it might wear off. And Rosinante might not be there. He steps outside the Invincible, down the steps, and several paces away from the building. Then he sets his lantern, puts the pendant over his head so he doesn't lose it, and promptly disappears in a cloud of dark mist. The mist expands, dissipates, and leaves in its place the large, winged version of Stone. He drops to a crouch, so he's not looming quite so big over Rosinante and the inn in general, curling his tail around his feet and one hand resting on the ground.

And he's still glowing, all the way from his clawed toes to the raised spines on his head. He holds up his other hand to examine, and rumbles in an amused kind of way.
callada: (intento saciarte de mi)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Stone's enormous size often means that in all the darkness, parts of him sort of blend in with the night. The lanterns and bonfire only illuminate so much, and always from below. Now, he can see the outline of those enormous wings and every massive spine, and Rosinante stares in awe.

So cool.

He'd walk closer, but it's easier to see the whole effect from back here, so he waves his free hand with excitement instead. "You look awesome!" he shouts.
scarsolderthanyou: (raksura-smug)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-07 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Stone bends down a little closer to Rosinante. His eye is as big as Rosinante's head, almost. He grins wryly, though, the expression clear even on a craggy, scaled face like that. His face is still mostly humanoid, with a nose and chin rather than a muzzle.

Then he offers Rosinante his hand, claws politely sheathed. Want a bird's eye view of the inn, buddy? He'll at least boost him up to his shoulder, even if he doesn't want to fly.
callada: (se siente bien estar aquí)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-08 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, Rosinante has seen more surreal things in his life, just not normally so big.

"You think it's safe?" he asks cautiously, absolutely expecting that this is an offer for flight of some sort, but he does attach his lantern to his belt and then climbs on up. It's a little unnerving, but he trusts Stone has tried enough flying to know generally what's safe and what's not - especially after learning the hard way at least once.

The view from up here alone is still fantastic, though, and once he feels stable enough, he holds onto a large spine and stands up on Stone's shoulders, admiring all the little lights down below. "This is incredible," he says. "It must be a pain to have to stay our size so often when you could have this view."

But obviously it also comes with benefits, like being able to talk to them and interact more easily. It's a shame Stone doesn't have more of his own people here, though.

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-01-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course it's safe. Stone does this with people all the time, back home. It's pointless to be the biggest, strongest, and most steady if you can't use it to carry wingless Arbora or groundlings, or tired and injured warriors. There's even a ridge of raised scales along his collarbone, which would make really great handholds when flying, or in the case of someone as big as Stone, almost a sheltered seat.

He taps them with one claw, makes sure Rosinante is holding on to one, then rises up to two feet, wings half-spread for balance. One could see pretty far, from there, if there was anything to see but lanterns in the distance, and the glow of the lighthouse.
callada: (honestly the shock of it all)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-09 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Rosinante makes sure to have a good hold on those as they're pointed out. Up here, too, the breeze comes stronger across the lake, without buildings to interrupt it so much. It's thrilling to be above everything -

But as is typical in his life, one can almost count off the seconds before disaster strikes. It's not even the standing Stone does that triggers it, for obviously he's careful and familiar with this. No, Rosinante just doesn't have solid footing. One heel slides across a scale, and then he's suddenly falling, though his fingers scrabble for purchase and finally he manages to cling to the edges of a scale on Stone's shoulder before he can fall entirely. Still, his feet are dangling, and he's unable to even shout - the lantern jarring hard against Stone's scales, and his misplaced ribs doing the same, has him briefly breathless, but hanging on.

Stone does have hands, you know. And cupped wings, curled around himself and under where his passenger might fall as soon as he feels Rosinante start to slip. He reaches up to put one palm under Rosinante's shoulder, making a noise that sounds somewhere between amused and resigned. Be however clumsy you want, Rosi, Stone will catch you. He's dealt with worse. At least Rosinante isn't afraid, on top of it all.

The lantern might leave a bruise once he's back to groundling form, though. Ow.

Thankfully he doesn't have to maintain that deathgrip for long, then, as he's helped back up.

"Thanks," he murmurs, but doesn't say anything more about it, and doesn't much mind if somehow Stone doesn't even hear him. It happens, it's fine.

"Sometime after the weather clears and we get the night sky back, I'd love to see the stars like this."

Stone makes a rumble that sounds like agreement, and gives Rosinante a very gentle pat on the top of his shoulder (the least likely place to destabilize him) with one finger. It's not the same as basking in the sun, but stars are at least pretty. And he's happy to oblige anyone with a better view of them.
