EVENT LOG: GRAVES

EVENT LOG:
GRAVES
characters: everyone.
location: Bonfire Square.
date/time: July 12-19.
content: mysterious shrines appear and bring visions of death.
warnings: likely violence and potentially gore.
time to pay your respects.
It happens when no one is looking, when most of the town is asleep and the rest are inside. A makeshift cemetery has come to Beacon, taking up residence in the middle of Bonfire Square. Each monument, shrine, and altar is dedicated to someone who now resides here, a memorial of their previous life.
Some may be drawn by curiosity, others by fear, and some may simply have to pass through this strange graveyard to get to the Bonfire itself. Whenever a person gets near, the altars beckon with a mysterious urge— an urge to approach, and an urge to leave something behind. They will feel compelled to make offerings at the various shrines, but doing so has a curious effect; it causes one to experience the death of the person whose grave they've honored.
Whether you resist the compulsion or give in willingly (or something in between), you'll also have to wrestle with the fact that a grave exists for you. Will you let your death be known, or try your best to keep it secret? Destroying it sure won't work, as it will return— with a duplicate somewhere else in town.
However you choose to deal with this, one thing is hard to ignore— this a tangible reminder of your death, and the fact that it's probably permanent.

Kuai remains kneeling by the grave, staring at it and the cup of tea he'd left as an offering as Ignis approaches.]
Do you know what happened? Did you save him?
no subject
Ignis stands silently next to Kuai, eyes refusing to remain still and on the kneeling figure that is paying him respects.]
...No. It wasn't enough.
[He wanted to fight everyone, anything that would threaten Noctis. But fate didn't let him. Some things are beyond him, a mere advisor and retainer.]
He's here...
no subject
[To try so hard to protect something, or someone, and to have it be meaningless in the end. He can think of no greater torment.]
I am truly sorry.
It is bittersweet is it not? To see those you care about here, but knowing what it means back in the worlds we left.
no subject
Indeed, it is.
And... what of you? [What of your death, Kuai?] If you do not mind me prying. [He'll step back if he's told so.]
no subject
[And he has no way of ever knowing.]
no subject
[Something similar is happening in his world. Lands and skies covered by eternal darkness of the daemons. Would it be like here? Who knows... Here, at least the moon and stars are visible.
All they have left now is hope in those that remained behind them, alive, still fighting.]
no subject
There was a part of me that hoped the afterlife would come with some way to look in on the worlds we left.
[Wishful thinking on his part.]
no subject
Amongst the other things, [Ignis sighs.]
I am not a big believer in Gods [they majorly backstabbed them all] but- the eternal night is definitively not something I expected.
[His body and mind are not, but his soul is tired of fighting. Of looking over his shoulder. Of making sure that decisions they make are fullproof.]
no subject
[It wasn't like they were shy about meddling with things, if they were around they would have shown themselves by now.]
No, it makes me wonder if we're in any sort of afterlife at all. Maybe some holding area between life and death. I certainly don't feel dead, and I still need to eat and sleep.
[he can relate. He's 45 and far too old for this shit. He needs a vacation.]
no subject
[Although, that threat about being reset and making you dead forever doesn't make this look like a holding area. He hopes they get rid of that threat soon. It's actually making him quite restless- as if someone is watching his every move, waiting to make a mistake.]
My powers are still here too. [He can still access Noct's armiger to get his weapons.] I hope we reach the bottom of this place, and soon, before everything goes out of control.
no subject
[It would take more than death to pry out the cryomancy that's his birthright.]
Agreed, I can see how this could spiral quickly. Especially now that emotions are running high after seeing so much death, willingly or not.
no subject
[All of this is very confusing to him. If his real body is dead, why does he have another one? His magical skills are tightly entwined with Noct's royal magic- he shouldn't have it here. Only his experience with daggers and polearms.]
True... I didn't expect that the offerings would do... this.
[People around here that arrived with him are just nice and respectful. With a few exceptions but that doesn't overshadow the others.]
no subject
[He'd been in the Netherrealm for years, everyone had bodies. How else do you make someone suffer without being able to rip them to shreds or be in a constant state of fighting?]
It's unfortunate that when we seek to honor someone in death, we are being forced to witness their final moments. It seems... disrespectful.
no subject
[It's just how he perceived that afterlife would look like. His spirit would retain the shape but he wouldn't have proper, living body.]
It really does. I wish there was some other way to pay respects.
[He gave a small prayer but that's not enough. At least, not from Ignis' point of view.]
no subject
Perhaps we could make another memorial elsewhere that wouldn't have the same effect as this. But someone will have to maintain the graves so they do not fall into disrepair.
[He sighs, thinking about graveyard maintenance was not how he envisioned his day going.]
We'll deal with it, as we have all other things. It's unfortunate it even came to this.
