time to pay your respects.

It happens when no one is looking, when most of the town is asleep and the rest are inside. A makeshift cemetery has come to Beacon, taking up residence in the middle of Bonfire Square. Each monument, shrine, and altar is dedicated to someone who now resides here, a memorial of their previous life.

Some may be drawn by curiosity, others by fear, and some may simply have to pass through this strange graveyard to get to the Bonfire itself. Whenever a person gets near, the altars beckon with a mysterious urge— an urge to approach, and an urge to leave something behind. They will feel compelled to make offerings at the various shrines, but doing so has a curious effect; it causes one to experience the death of the person whose grave they've honored.

Whether you resist the compulsion or give in willingly (or something in between), you'll also have to wrestle with the fact that a grave exists for you. Will you let your death be known, or try your best to keep it secret? Destroying it sure won't work, as it will return— with a duplicate somewhere else in town.

However you choose to deal with this, one thing is hard to ignore— this a tangible reminder of your death, and the fact that it's probably permanent.

Yes. Her name is Alice.

( it's not often there's a touch of... well, sunshine in kara's stance or voice but she can't help it when it comes to alice. even after everything that happened to them, alice was (and would always be) most important. )

She passed away shortly before I did. I thought... I thought I might find her here too but I am hoping she went somewhere better instead.

I'm...well, I don't know if I'm sorry she's not here since this place is a bit difficult to swallow but I hope she's somewhere better as well.

Did she give you a reason she chose your name?

( she nods, quiet for a moment but his question is a good one. alice had never actually spoke to her about it and, in truth, she only knew it because todd mentioned it once. )

N-no, um, she didn't. She was a terribly smart girl though and it is a name with a lot of pleasant meanings so she perhaps liked it because of that alone.

Well, it's nice. I like it. I won't say it suits you but that's only because I don't know you and I don't want to tell a lie.

( he's a liar but not about everything. )

She sounds like a good kid. Free from all the trappings that make children somewhat..loud. Some children are very loud.

Well, I certainly appreciate your honesty.

❪ and for a moment she smiles, a first in these many days since arriving here. ❫ Oh, I know. I was created to help care for children but Alice... she was special. Quiet, attentive but she loved so much. I miss her terribly.

( to his credit, he doesn't sound...too surprised. there's definitely a pause while he parses that before pressing on. )

I didn't know that was a thing people did. But, I am sorry you miss her. I miss my family too. I want to think they'll be all right but I still miss them. A lot.

It's what my model was created to do. There are other models, of course, with other reasons for existing.

CyberLife has changed a lot of things with the idea of making it easier for humans. And, I know it doesn't mean a lot to hear from a stranger but I hope your family is all right as well. I can't imagine how hard it would be just not knowing.

My family will be fine, I'm sure. They've come back from worse losses than me.

( they'd mourn, grieve, be sad but they'd get past it. they'd move on, be stronger, and forget about him eventually. )

We don't...have people who are created where I'm from. Not like what I think you're talking about.
