EVENT LOG: GRAVES

EVENT LOG:
GRAVES

characters: everyone.
location: Bonfire Square.
date/time: July 12-19.
content: mysterious shrines appear and bring visions of death.
warnings: likely violence and potentially gore.

time to pay your respects.

It happens when no one is looking, when most of the town is asleep and the rest are inside. A makeshift cemetery has come to Beacon, taking up residence in the middle of Bonfire Square. Each monument, shrine, and altar is dedicated to someone who now resides here, a memorial of their previous life.

Some may be drawn by curiosity, others by fear, and some may simply have to pass through this strange graveyard to get to the Bonfire itself. Whenever a person gets near, the altars beckon with a mysterious urge— an urge to approach, and an urge to leave something behind. They will feel compelled to make offerings at the various shrines, but doing so has a curious effect; it causes one to experience the death of the person whose grave they've honored.

Whether you resist the compulsion or give in willingly (or something in between), you'll also have to wrestle with the fact that a grave exists for you. Will you let your death be known, or try your best to keep it secret? Destroying it sure won't work, as it will return— with a duplicate somewhere else in town.

However you choose to deal with this, one thing is hard to ignore— this a tangible reminder of your death, and the fact that it's probably permanent.

What abilities are those?

[If he had to guess, the ability to light something on fire by staring at it, given what she'd just possibly attempted. That would have been handy, back in life. He's gone through more lighters than he can count, not only for cigarettes but cooking fires and the occasional necessary use in combat. And arson. But that was only a few places that deserved it, in his opinion.]

The power to make light and the power to cast shadow.

It's a vague answer, and she takes a drag of the cigarette like it's a thing she's done all her life. Truth is, she doesn't think of herself as being vague in this manner, the only times she does it on purpose is when she speaks of visions she does not see a need to share just yet.

These things exist in your world, no?

[He'd argue that fire is more than just "light" but from what little he knows of her culture it does make a certain amount of sense to group them. So, cool. Light and the absence of it. That would be a pretty useful paramecia type.]

What, light and shadow? Or powers?

Powers.

Her language does not know it, but her voice says 'duh'.

[Look, he'd just maybe hoped she wasn't asking about those because he now has to decide how much he's willing to tell her. He quickly decides there's no harm in it, though. He's spoken plenty about how his world doesn't have magic to others, because it's true, but any who saw his own death will realize that a lack of magic does not mean a lack of abilities. If they're particularly canny they might even notice he's been awfully quiet about his own. Pun possibly intended.]

Sort of. Not magic, like most of you have. But some people in my world do have superhuman abilities. There are fruits that grow in the world with the ability to rewrite a person's lineage factor - they, uh, change how their body works, permanently.

[He rewords himself midsentence, realizing her world's level of scientific knowledge probably doesn't match that of his world's. And getting away from jargon is better for him, anyway, since he only knows the basics. He's no scientist, no doctor.]

So, there are people who can transform themselves into animals, or things like air. Actually, I know of someone who can become light itself.

To change the mark-up of the body –– while she lacks scientific terminology, she does know her own powers to do much of the same. After all, she is the one who need not eat nor drink nor sleep most of the time.

Have you ever sought such a fruit?

She has a suspicion, based on what she saw, but magic in her world is best close to one's chest. In her case, the main reasons why she chooses not do that are simple: one, she is quite powerful, two, people fear her, and three, anyone from her own world knows of them, anyway, and is unlikely to keep the secret forever.

[He has, in fact, sought a fruit - but it wasn't for his own use, and that's a story he doesn't feel inclined to share even though the outcome of that long search is on wide display at his grave. What she's really asking is if he has powers.

He's so used to hiding them he's forgotten that most in his world are proud to show them off. The average devil fruit user can't seem to go more than a minute in conversation without telling someone about what they can do. Here, it's been weeks and he hasn't mentioned it once. Had Doflamingo found out, his cover could have been blown so much earlier. He would have been killed so much sooner. Here, it doesn't matter, and he has to keep reminding himself that. The habits formed over the last three years and some months aren't the habits of a normal person but of a spy terrified daily for his life.

It's one thing to explain and another to demonstrate. He places his cigarette in his mouth to hold onto it and sets his elbow on the table, then snaps his fingers as he utters the word "Silent". The creak of footsteps on the floor above, the strange squeaking of the forest spirits at the bar, a conversation between two people heading down the stairs and out the door, all of it immediately falls silent, though none of the others seem to react or notice and carry on doing what they're doing.]

I didn't seek it out. I was a kid, and I ate it on accident. Didn't know what it was until I took a bite.

[It would be a funny story if he hadn't been starving. The ugly, weird, disgusting fruit kept him fed another day.]

She had seen a hint of it in his death vision, but truth be told, other things had captured her attention more –– but now, she is entirely enthralled, almost forgetting about her cigarette for a moment.

Oh.

Her eyes dart around the room, but yes, no one seems to take any notice of this at all. How odd. How fascinating. She doesn't say: you would make a grand assassin. But she thinks it, loathe as she is.

God, if such things existed in my world... Some of mine own powers may be taught, but it is a process, and not a kindly one.

Well, this is a skill like anything else. You have to train it, have to figure out how to use it. My fruit seems particularly hard to use.

[Or maybe he's just bad at it. So many others can do so many things with their rewritten bodies. Many also learn to wield the innate powers of the sixth sense, haki, said to be something everyone possesses. But he's never felt it either. He had the best instructors a Marine could ask for and not once could he manage to harness those powers of armament or observation, while his brother was causing crowds to fall at his feet under sheer willpower at the age of eight.]

Like this barrier, it's a double-edged sword. They can't hear anything we're saying right now, those spirit creatures, and that's the real benefit. But as you can see, we can't hear them, either.

[It's far from the only thing he can do, of course, but it's enough to show he can do something. He'll keep the rest to himself.]
