EVENT LOG: GRAVES

EVENT LOG:
GRAVES

characters: everyone.
location: Bonfire Square.
date/time: July 12-19.
content: mysterious shrines appear and bring visions of death.
warnings: likely violence and potentially gore.

time to pay your respects.

It happens when no one is looking, when most of the town is asleep and the rest are inside. A makeshift cemetery has come to Beacon, taking up residence in the middle of Bonfire Square. Each monument, shrine, and altar is dedicated to someone who now resides here, a memorial of their previous life.

Some may be drawn by curiosity, others by fear, and some may simply have to pass through this strange graveyard to get to the Bonfire itself. Whenever a person gets near, the altars beckon with a mysterious urge— an urge to approach, and an urge to leave something behind. They will feel compelled to make offerings at the various shrines, but doing so has a curious effect; it causes one to experience the death of the person whose grave they've honored.

Whether you resist the compulsion or give in willingly (or something in between), you'll also have to wrestle with the fact that a grave exists for you. Will you let your death be known, or try your best to keep it secret? Destroying it sure won't work, as it will return— with a duplicate somewhere else in town.

However you choose to deal with this, one thing is hard to ignore— this a tangible reminder of your death, and the fact that it's probably permanent.

[ he'd found hers by accident. lived through that by accident, too. it's why he comes looking for her near the grave.

apologies are weird. he couldn't control what he saw. nor can anyone. and she'd been injured when he met her. ]

Hey.

[Jo looks up quickly. She was pretty sure she wasn't in anyone's way, so any voice is unexpected.]

Yeah? [She doesn't make any move to get out of his way if that's what the problem is. She's hesitant to go too far from her marker and her face is set in a firm scowl.

He looks worried. That's rarely a good thing. She's spoken to him before, remembers him, but that doesn't mean this is good news. ]

What do you want?

[ he wanted to apologize. he doesn't quite know how. he'd seen her name on it and gotten curious. then been sucked in by the magic of this. seeing her memories and leaving the offering.

at least she doesn't know what's from him. ]

I found this earlier. [ come on grayson. ] By accident.

[That's probably better for him.]

And you left something.

[I'ts not a question. Jo wouldn't apologize to anyone for simply looking at a grave marker.

She remembers her time at the graves she visited. So, he experienced her death. She'd prefer he hadn't, but it's too late for that, isn't it?]

What do you expect me to say?

[ he doesn't want her to apologize. he can't, either. given a choice, he would have looked. he's nosy that way. he likes having what advantage he can.

but some advantages come with too high a price. dick clears his throat. ]

Just... thought you should know.

[Jo isn't thinking that strategically. After the first two that were mostly accidents, she only looked at a few more because she was interested in the name or the person.

Some things, she thinks, deserve to be left alone. She feels a little bad for the deaths she experienced only because she was curious. She might not apologize for it personally, but there's a small thread of guilt.

She can appreciate his honesty.]

Thanks. Sorry you had to feel it. [She remembers. It hurt a lot. No one else should've had to experience it.]

[ he snorts. ]

I don't think it's you that should be sorry. [ she died a hero. she knew it was coming.

he can't imagine. ]

You're right. [She shrugs, waving a hand in the general direction of the Lighthouse.]

Someone in this place did all of this. They should be sorry.
