Technically, what he's doing is selfish. He's lost a staggering number of his friends, it's broken his heart in more places than one. Even now, it's effects can be felt. He can't even summon Braveheart anymore.
Riku has doubts that he even has what it takes to keep the friends he still has safe. That's a large part of why he brought some of them here, to a heavily camouflaged building that's easy to miss without knowing where it is and without torches to mark the way.
