Hello, dreamers. Welcome to Beacon.![]()

Below, each group has a toplevel ready and waiting for the investigation to begin. Feel free to tag in however to establish a tag order, and mod responses will begin once each character has tagged in. If you need a refresher on how the event will work, give the OOC info another read!
As for those of you in thesin binopt out area...
The Beacon of the past isn't all too different from the Beacon of the present, frankly, except for a few notable exceptions. For one, it's far better lit: daylight leaves everything feels a lot brighter and more sensible than eternal night does. Several advertisements for community theater in the Invincible are hung up (Tryouts for the Ice Man Cometh! Cometh try your luck!) and minor lost and found posters are tacked to a community bulletin board nearby. Oh, and a merry little tune is playing on loop from a record player set up outside the Invincible.
It's cheerful, if not a little off-putting. But the signs of life are clear, even if the forest still looks darkly oppressive over yonder.
Additionally, since investigation threads 1) rely on mod responses, and 2) will likely move on the slow side given the nature of the event/size of the groups, if you would like to have your characters "mingle" in their assigned location, please feel free to write your own toplevels! We ask that you post them as separate toplevels not in response to the mod toplevels (so our inboxes don't get super flooded/we don't accidentally miss stuff). Remember that groups may only interact with each other during the event, but you're welcome to assume timey-wimey shenanigans to excuse why your characters are mingling instead of searching for clues—they do have two weeks in this dream, technically, and dreams are not always linear. If your investigation thread has not yet progressed to a point in which you've got enough of a handle on the setting to write a separate mingle starter, ask the mod you're working with! We'll fill you in on some OOC details so you can mingle accordingly while still allowing for characters to discover those details ICly in the investigation thread.
If you're still jonesing for more threading action during the event, we encourage you to check out the TDM!

The staircase caught his attention and curiosity drew him towards it. He carefully ascended the stairs, wondering what he would find at the top of the tower.]

Inspecting the room will reveal various terminals meant for the operation of many complicated instruments... In particular, there are labels for a translator, portal control, and a vast array of radar screens.
The control room's main attraction, though, is the computer hub. It's equipped with many screens, and seems to have access to Beacon's network. And clearly, someone's spent a lot of time here. The little hub has been outfitted with various creature comforts: a blanket folded over the back of the desk chair, little trinkets and stickers decorating around the screens, a minifridge under the desk filled with snacks and soda... A teenage girl has been here.
The hub faces a cozy little lounge space, decorated with fairy lights and posters of unfamiliar bands and stuffed animals, all wearing little handmade outfits. A handful of feathers sits on the coffee table next to a hammock and beanbag chair.
After he wakes up, Hux will recognize this scene in the weekly bulletin.]

It seemed straightforward enough and he took a seat at the computer hub. Perhaps this would provide answers as to what going on in this dream and how to stop it. Everything had a logical explanation, he just had to figure it out.
He took a moment to look things over, inspecting the controls to see if he could figure out where to start. He didn't want to start just pushing buttons around but he had to start somewhere as he tentatively touched a key.]
no subject
In perusing the list of apps available to him, he'll note a few that sound particularly promising: KEEPER INSTRUCTIONS, NETWORK SEARCH, ARCHIVES, and TELEGRAM.]
no subject
However, he was interested in the archives and keeper instructions. He opened up keeper instructions first, curious as to what he would find there.]

There's a beep, and quite a few windows populate a nearby screen, though one in particular stands at the forefront. It's a list of Beacon's current residents, though all of the names have been grayed out except for three: BUFFY SUMMERS, ARMITAGE HUX, WANDA MAXIMOFF
The window prompts Hux to select at least one name in order to complete reset protocol.
The keeper instructions, meanwhile, is an incredibly long document... Luckily, there's a table of contents that allows for quick access to each chapter. If there's any information in particular that Hux is interested in, he'll have no problem navigating the document to find an answer to his question.]
no subject
So he selected his own name, if anything was going to happen at least he would know himself.]

The sunlight overhead cuts out abruptly, leaving the control room in darkness save for the screens, until the lighthouse's red beam starts up. The heavy light churns above Hux, the tower groaning in time to the revolutions.
On the computer screen, a chat window pops up.]
@brendol
Why did you kill me?
[And then, another screen: INITIATE FINAL COMMAND A switch next to the screen lights up, waiting to be flipped.]
no subject
He didn't respond to the chat- if it was Brendol then he was sure his father knew. He looked down at the switch. There was no way to figure out what it was going to do if he flipped it.
He reached out slowly, debating what to do but eventually flipped the switch.]

The lighthouse begins to emit a sound, a horrible droning blend of shifting tones that shakes the tower violently, threatening to knock Hux off his feet if he isn't careful. The noise is deafening, painfully so—Hux's eardrums feel as though they might burst.
On the screen, a new window pops up. This time, a timer, counting down from 90 seconds.
The chat window pings again.

NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:90 ) . . .
A cursor blinks, awaiting Hux's response.]

You know why I had to kill you. One of us was going to survive and it wasn't going to be you.
[He wasn't going to type in in the chatbox though, watching the timer and trying to shut out the noise that made his head throb.]

We've already discussed that you're not my sister.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:84 ) . . .
The radar screens pings to catch Hux's attention. A single massive shape takes up nearly the entire top-left corner, its edge blurred and difficult for the radar to make out. It's moving, though, slowly engulfing more and more of the screen as it descends.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:73 ) . . .
Another screen lights up, this one labelled PORTAL CONTROL. A program runs through what look to be a series of calculations before a final window pops up: #11.89782730 (CRAIT) LAUNCHING . . . LAUNCHING . . .
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:47 ) . . .
More screens, this time all at once: Surveillance cameras, all in and around the lighthouse, though there isn't much to see on account of the darkness. On the first floor, Hux will see Wanda weeping over the rotting corpse of an elderly man. In the control room, he will see himself, and next to him, a forest spirit thrashes Buffy's body against the very screens Hux is looking at right now.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:33 ) . . .
Outside, the faint light of a lantern darts through the door to the tower. It hops past Wanda and heads up the stairs, the dark shape of a body just visible in the blackness.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:25 ) . . .
It swoops past Hux too, the shape small in comparison to him, and heads up the stairs to the light room. If he looks around the control room he's standing in, he will see nothing out of the ordinary.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:17 ) . . .
On the upper deck of the lighthouse, an elderly man grips the railing as the figure with the lantern creeps out onto the deck behind him. The lighthouse beam hits her, and Hux may just recognize Robin, the current Lighthouse Keeper. In one hand, she carries her lantern, and in the other, a knife. The man turns from the railing, seemingly unsurprised to see Robin, and they exchange words. Sadly, there's no audio accompanying the video.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:08 ) . . .
The radar screen pings again. The blurry mass crawls diligently down, down, and then the screen shorts out.
NETWORK DISCONNECT IN ( 00:00:03 ) . . .
The tape glitches, and a body tumbles over the edge—
SHUTTING DOWN . . .
The room goes black, all of the screens shutting down at once, along with the red lighthouse beam overhead. The ear-splitting droning stops too, and Hux will realize after a long moment of readjusting to the quiet that the wind outside has stopped, too. It's silent now. Silent, and black.
The next few years happen both slowly and instantly. It's not so much that Hux can't move; it's that he doesn't have time to, and yet, he'll be frozen in that liminal space for what feels like months, years, decades. Somewhere along the way, the ground leaves him too, and then he can't see nor hear nor feel, and he is left repeating a phrase he just can't seem to ignore:
YOU MUST LIVE WITH WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.
The phrase clings to him even as the nightmare finally ends, and he wakes up.]

But there was no way to figure out what it was before the screen flashed once more and he narrowed his eyes at the pop-up window. Crait....somehow the keeper or the lighthouse network knew where he had been last. He remembered something about a shuttle leaving Crait then a bright flash of light. He shook his head- now was not the time to dwell on that. There were screens flicking on and he saw Wanda on the first floor, wondering why he hadn't seen her before. But it was the window with Buffy that caught his attention fully.
He let out a gasp but there was nothing near him even though he saw something grotesque slam Buffy against the computer console. But when he looked beside him, she wasn't there. There was so much going on, he looked up when a figure darted past him and then suddenly it went black.
It felt like he was in a void. Time had no place here and he had no idea where he was, how long he was there for. It felt as if eternity had passed before he suddenly woke up with a gasp, heart beating hard with a phrase echoing in his head. You must live with what you have done.
He must live with what he's done. He always knew that- he had made peace with that when he had given the order to fire on the Hosnian System or when he helped murder his father. He knew that these things would stay with him his entire life and perhaps one day he would be held accountable but right now, he didn't regret anything. He had acted out of necessity.
There was something nagging at him though as he got to his feet, feeling shakier than he cared to admit.]
