INTRO LOG: NOVEMBER

INTRO LOG: NOVEMBER
OLD FAT BOAT

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, and around town.
date/time: november 1-3.
content: the ferry's back! yay! and it's piled high with goodies! yay!
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

To everyone's surprise, the ferry does indeed arrive on schedule. Right on time, it comes chugging along toward the beach, though its usually noisy engines are silent. And it seems to be sitting quite low in the water... Hmm.

Unfortunately for those unlucky enough to find themselves onboard, there isn't yet a replacement dock for the one that was destroyed last month. The ferry stops right where it would normally anchor, but then... that's it.

Logistically, there's good news and bad news: The good news is that the ferry is only about 25-30 feet from shore, which is well within the safety of the harbor and is a manageable distance for swimming with an open flame. The bad news? It's... 25-30 feet from shore, which is going to make unloading supplies, er, tricky.

The usual monthly stock has also come in, but, oh, what's this? There's an awful lot in the cargo hold. An awful, awful lot. As a matter of fact, the boat is absolutely filled with food and goods. The storage areas are packed tight, but the bounty spills out onto the decks, and even into the cabins. It's entirely possible that some of the newbies woke up surrounded by potatoes, or with a carton of eggs balanced on them. Maybe even in a pile of Beacon's signature standard clothing. In short, the ferry has become a proverbial horn of plenty.

Where all this stuff came from is one mystery, but another is how to get it all to shore. Better unload it before the weight sinks the ferry again! Just kidding. (Or are we?)

At a glance, the only thing out of place on the ferry is that the door to the bridge is welded shut. Seems a small price to pay for this resurrection though, doesn't it? Besides that one door and all these goodies piled high on the ship, it's almost as if the ferry crash never even happened. Maybe things will be okay after all?

Or maybe the new arrivals will have something to say about that. 🤔

And speaking of newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.

As hinted above, it's also up to veteran residents (and newbies alike) to figure out the missing dock situation. Some efforts have already been started to rebuild the structure, but until that's done, the logistics are in your hands! Swim for it, fly for it, teleport to the beach, or maybe use one of the rafts or boats built earlier to shuttle people to and fro. Whatever you do, just make sure you get all the cargo (and people!) off the ferry before it departs.

As an additional note: We will NOT be tracking how you do all of that! There's no need to report salvage efforts to us, as by now, we trust y'all players to make things happen. So long as we see these challenges getting addressed ICly, we'll assume the town came together and figured it out somehow. Nice work, everyone!

DELIVERIES

The following packages can be found in the cargo hold:
  • The monthly store restock
  • A smorgasbord of other items; though limited in scope to the items typically found in the restock/stores, there's an abundance of everything.
  • And that's it. With the fate of the ferry uncertain, Rastus was unable to order deliveries last month. :(
  • ...Except for a single box of blueberry Poptarts for Peter Parker.

[ this is awfully interesting, isn't it? the ferry's up and running (a miracle) but it's stopped where it would be stopped if there was a pier. he stands on the edge, waiting for the ferryman to realise that he needs to try and bring the ferry closer… to not do that at all.

that's great. he really wanted to have something to eat that wasn't soggy with river water. guess it's not an early christmas for him.

although he's 25-30 feet away from the newbies, he can hear them loud and clear. ]
This is a walk in the park to summer camp. [ he says that loudly and with a smile—and like he was standing right beside her. kol also has never been to summer camp, but shh.

then he purposefully shouts, with his hands around his mouth to project his voice, ]
Is there anything useful on the boat?
antiwhat: (🎵 what a fine pickle.)

[ Ellever blinks, but overall doesn't seem too surprised that someone on the edge of the pier can hear her voice. Mostly she just looks surprised that there are so many people here, in general. Just what the hell is this place? ]

Uh.

[ She turns slightly, toward the cargo, and then back, still leaning heavily on the railing but not nearly as much as she was earlier. Ellever simply looks tired, and not like she should be stretched out on a hospital bed. ]

What qualifies as useful? Looks like there's a bunch of stuff.

[ pursing his lips for just a moment in thought. he yells, ] Is there booze?

[ anyone in their right mind would prioritise that first! besides, kol figures to go with what's expected and then dive into the more curious, what-the-fuck kind of enquiries. like weapons, blood bags… perhaps a taylor swift cd. (he doesn't like taylor swift, but if it appeared, he'd know they were truly in hell.) ]
antiwhat: (🎵 wait what?)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2019-11-06 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She grins just a little at the question. Okay. Now there's a priority. Hell, she's not even a heavy drinker herself and she could go for a drink right about now. ]

Um-- [ Ellever turns as best she can, still leaning heavily on the railing for balance, and surveys what people are moving around. ] I don't see any right now. Is that normal?

[ Is booze normal around here? There might well have been booze and it's been moved off the boat already, but Ellever can't spot any when she squints at the crates. ]

[ kol throws his head back. it's not a very positive sight.

how's he meant to get through another month of bullshit if he can't sit at the invincible's bar and swivel alcohol in a glass? a lack of alcohol just means he can't fulfil the image he's going for.

now properly righted, he crosses his arms and shakes his head. ]
What about clothes? Are there any good pants on there? Expensive looking things? Maybe a high thread count sheet set?

[ he asked for none of this but he's not above stealing someone else's stuff. ]
antiwhat: (🎵 um no.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2019-11-09 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be honest, most of this looks pretty basic.

[ There's... a single box of poptarts, but Ellever doesn't mention it. He's asking about high count thread sheets, he's not going to want those, surely. Ellever takes a deep breath and stands up straight at the rail.

She's looking more and more alert by the second; the cold night air helps. ]

Does this really happen once a month? Seems inefficient. Quaint, though.

[ this is the most disappointing news he's heard, but it had been expected. given the ferry had apparently sunk last month… he's surprised that there's even a boat begin with, let alone any supplies.

eyebrows rising and with a bit of a smile (he does find this amusing), ]
The limited restocks or the ferry stopping where there's no dock? You have idiots who live here to thank for both of those things.

[ he is not one of those idiots, btw. ]

This is not normal.
antiwhat: (🎵 wait what?)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2019-11-09 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I heard about the whole, um... ferry sinking thing.

[ Ellever is extremely glad to have missed it. She can't even imagine barely being able to walk and, what, being expected to swim? No, thank you. She squints down at Kol. ]

Who's running the show around here, anyway?

[ No one seems to be leading the charge, as it were. A lot of people are taking initiative but that's not the same thing. ]

[personal profile] unpredict 2019-11-09 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
[ that's a tricky question. he shows as much with an exaggerated shrug. ]

Spirits. [ that's what he believes—and that's what he thinks is right. they're in a spirit realm; if the main mastermind in charge won't show his or herself, he has to depend on the spirits being the ones pulling the strings. worlds are never self-sufficient. perhaps there's a big spirit at the helm of this ship.

with a curious tilt of his head, ]
Have you ever been dead before?

[ if it isn't obvious with how easygoing he is about it, he has been. ]
antiwhat: (🎵 no.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2019-11-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
[ 'Spirits' is a slightly kinder-sounding answer than if she'd asked Dewan the same question, back home. That's an answer she can work with. If he'd said "the Nine"... well, that would have been a completely different, although not unexpected, story. ]

Dead?

[ Most people probably don't pause when someone asks that. Ellever furrows both of her brows, thinking, and then shakes her head. She's run into some very odd artifacts with the Binding, as well as strange creatures, but none of those experiences was dying. Infinitely weirder, in some cases, and harder to quantify. ]

No. First timer. [ She summons up a wry smile, making a note of his somewhat flippant attitude in the question. ] Not sure what I think yet. Why, have you?

[ it's easy to judge people based on their reception to being dead. either they freak out and start diving deep into that river of denial (and begin to sink) or they take it in stride and possibly freak out later. kol much prefers the latter—the former can get quite taxing.

just as flippantly as she's observed, he answers, ]
Third, maybe fourth, time.

[ dying is a Big Thing for kol, but if he acts unafraid, then he is unafraid. best to have everyone believing that so he can believe it, too. ]

If you can believe it, this isn't the worst realm to be in. At least you have monthly surprises. [ he gestures with his hand toward the ferry. perhaps it's the boat itself, the lack of items on said boat, or the newbies. ] Every day is different.
antiwhat: (🎵 um no.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2019-11-10 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ Both of her eyebrows climb up, briefly. ]

Wow. Do you get some kind of punch card?

[ Ellever isn't sure if she believes him. Maybe she does. She's just died -- or remembered dying -- and shown up on a cold ferry in the dead of night. And apparently it's always the dead of night. This is high in the Weirdness Factor.

Or maybe he's just yanking her chain. Hard to tell, without knowing him. ]
