INTRO LOG: JULY

INTRO LOG: JULY
IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: july 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. winters, will, and rastus introduce themselves and explain the situation.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Winters and Will are waiting for you on the beach. Winters flags you down from where he's standing atop a large rock, surveying the gathering crowd. Will stands next to him, though he's monkeying with his tablet and looks rather bored. He barely looks up as Winters speaks:

"First thing's first: I'm sorry you're here. There's no easy way to break this news, so let's just get it over with, hm? You're dead. Or, ah, you've died. Call this the afterlife if you want, or don't if that ain't your thing, but point is, you're here 'cause you died. Those are the facts.

This world's dead, too. You've noticed by now it's pretty dark, yeah? That's 'cause there's no life here, not anymore. And that lantern you've got? That's your life, so to speak. The flame goes out, you die, and vice versa. Keep it close. Should be easy enough to remember on account of how the sun don't rise. You'll need something to see by.

This place is called Beacon, and that's Lake Red Jacket. Town's 'bout a mile down the road, and we've got a bonfire there, but that's the only other light you'll see in this place. Save for the moon and all, though the sky won't do you much good out in the woods. I'll let Rastus explain the bonfire to y'all.

Ah, right. I'm Ben Winters—Winters'll do—and this here's Will Ingr— What? For christ's sake, Dr. Will Ingram. Likes to think he's the brains of the operation, as you can see. If you've got questions about these tablets, he's your guy. Rastus tends to the fire, and you'll find him in town. He's married to his job in a way. And you may never've seen a person like him back wherever you came from, but don't make a big fuss over it. He's a nice fellow. Mind your manners.

The three of us are leftovers from past resets. We came here on that ferry just like you, but it's just us left now. 'Sides the Lighthouse Keeper, but it'll be a bit before you get to meet her. She's got control over the town, see, and if she ain't satisfied with a group's performance, they get the axe. Town gets reset. If she pulls a reset on you folks, a couple of you might end up like me and Will here, giving this speech to the next crop."

The red beam of the lighthouse pulses over the group, over the trees. Winters glances up to watch it swing out over the bay.

"But don't hold it against her. Ain't her fault we're in this mess, and we've all got a job to do, including you.

For now, concentrate on accepting your lot, yeah? We're here to answer your questions, but we ain't gonna tell you all there is to know just yet. Some things are best learned on your own, and some of it we just don't want to saddle you with yet. There's a limit to how long we can stay here safely, that's true, but thing is, we do got time. Time enough to play this smart. Do better than the folks before us did. Settle in, make peace, explore a bit if you're up for it. Use these first couple weeks to come to grips. You ain't gonna be any good to the town if you don't sort yourself out before worrying about what comes next.

So listen up: You're dead. You died. Whatever your old life was, it's done now. None of us can go back, so all we've got is forward. Welcome to Beacon. Could be worse, yeah?"

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, all three NPCs will be available for chatting with, whether your character wants to make casual conversation or ask questions about all this. The headers on each NPC toplevel are there for easy reference as to what each of them are responsible for, but you're welcome to go to any NPC for whatever reason. You're welcome to assume your character has overheard any NPC conversation to learn more about the game. After the NPC threads have died down, we'll compile the info learned ICly and add it to the game history page. If your character would contribute something specific to the game history records, let us know!

Oh wow! [ oh wow! ] Oh wow- I like the way you think!

[ daylight's winglets wiggle in joy when he sees the offered hat his way. his expression is undeniably happy as he bends down a bit, taking the hat and nodding towards the new (and neat, in day's opinion) guy in thanks as he plops it down on his other point of the crest. it floofs, dramatically so, and daylight is ecstatic with it.

he now strikes another pose, sillier this time, and repeats the question from earlier. and someone else gives a response. it happens to be a sharp shhhhhh!.

the source of the noise makes themselves known soon enough; the person pops their head around the corner of the shelves and boxes and the like. they're obviously human - meaning daylight is still the only galateion so far. boo. - and they're looking pretty annoyed as they hold a bundle of clothes to their chest.

oh dear- did they work here? did they just like the peace and quiet that the two accidentally broke? it's hard to say but daylight is quick to look sheepish, raising a hand in apology and quick to take the blame. ]

Sorry! My bad! I promise to quiet down. [ the person disappears around the corner and daylight turns his attention to the new neat guy again. ] Thanks for the hat! I think it makes me look pretty dashing.

[ day makes it a point to speak in a less booming voice because he's around mostly human ears. gotta adjust his volumes for that. last thing he wants to do is possibly deafen a potential new buddy...! ]

[It isn't his first time meeting- uh. Someone different. But it is his first time meeting someone so big. Part of this might be Sora's stubborn refusal to admit to just how short he is, but the rest of it's definitely definitely! because this guy is big like a house! Or at least like a really tall tree! Oh wait- His head jerks back in the direction of the door, only to come right back around. Did that mean he had to duck to come inside? Ahhgh no! He can't ask that right away!

But the questions don't really get the chance to come to a head because as soon as they do, someone the next aisle over shhes them loudly. Sora, like any rambunctious teenager that started out as a rambunctious child, recognizes the scolding immediately and stands at obedient attention. It isn't quite the reprimand he's gotten used to, especially from Donald. But that's probably a good thing. It leaves the pair of them standing sheepishly all the same. Where one raises his hand in apology, Sora's reaches to rub at the back of his neck.

It's hard to know just how bad he feels about it, given the comically loud stage whisper that follows.]
Don't worry about it! But I definitely think you need one for each- [what was it again? oh yeah] Uh, optic.

[ that's the word! and it also seems to be the right thing to say with how daylight's winglets flutter, almost preening with how they stretch out and wiggle in joy. it's clear he's tickled pink by these turn of events, despite the scolding they got just a few seconds ago. he's relieved to have a moment of respite like this. friendly banter. goofy happenings. it helps ease his processors off of the reality they're all facing and it's

nice. really nice. ]

Thanks! You got a real eye for fashion, you know that? [ and deciding this is a good time as any: daylight extends out one of his servos, if the new neat guy is up for a handshake between them. he hopes he is. he seems like a cool dude and daylight would like to get to know him better...!

but, like all good introductions, day knows it doesn't hurt to get the ball rolling. ]
What's your name? I'm Daylight. You can call me 'Day' if you want.

[There's no denying in the end that the whole thing is a little strange. Sure they're already in a new world that they don't understand, it's dark all the time, there's weird stuff in the shops like the canned hotdogs he's still not over. But maybe that's what makes the people easier to roll with. It's like he's never met strangers in strange places before. Maybe it's all the armor.

The little flaps beside his head move back and forth and Sora looks at them because he can't help it- and then wonders if maybe he wasn't supposed to look? Oh well, no taking it back now! He laughs instead.]

Yeah, we could use a little more of that around here. [Daylight. It's alright, he knows it's a bad joke before it even finishes landing. The hand between them is larger than his own, and it sure is different from any other he's seen before- except maybe Baymax under all that armor- but if Sora feels hesitant about it at all it's impossible to know for sure. Instead, he takes it readily, shoulders sloping downward in time with an easy grin.] I'm Sora, nice to meet you Day.

I guess there isn't a whole lot of other fashion that'd fit around here, huh? I bet the shoes are way too small.
sunborne: (090. - 🔥 - PRESENTATION.)

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-07-11 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah; I think none of the shoes here will fit me anytime soon. [ he snaps his fingers, feigning disappointment. ] A real shame too! Some of the shoes here are nice.

[ daylight puffs out a cheek in mock annoyance but the twinkle in his optics is undeniable mirth and good cheer. it seems he's used to not a lot of things being made for his size. or, at the very least, he's doing his best to make good of a bad situation. no need to add towards the negativity and all that, you know?

but he does look at a nearby windbreaker that's propped up on one of the shelves, he's obviously looking wistful at the product and he seems sincere about it too. ]
Would be nice if some of them fit. I left mine back home and that sucks big time- They would have been useful here for the weather.

[ ah...! he now looks back at sora, looking sheepish as he rubs the back of his helm. ] Sorry! I bet you're not here to listen to me whine, huh? Are you looking for anything in particular, Sora? Maybe I can help.

[There are a dozen parables about idle hands, but the grain of truth underneath them is that Sora just isn't sure what to do with them now that they're empty. Before now he'd always been in a kind of perpetual motion- trying to find his friends, trying to stop Ansem, looking for Riku, chasing down all those nobodies. Traveling to other worlds had meant landing himself in the middle of other people's stories too- meeting new people and learning about their problems, all of them trying to achieve some kind of goal together.

It's strange to be so suddenly and completely without it.

Is it death just like that? He'd gotten close before and that hadn't left him with much free time either, so maybe it was inevitable after all?

Sora's arms raise until he's able to fold both behind his head, crown resting in the space between his linked fingers.]
Nah it's okay, I was just looking around to look- but there's not a whole lot to check out around here. It's kinda weird right?

I mean, it's a whole town but there's just a couple buildings.
sunborne: (038. - 🔥 - COOPERATE.)

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-07-15 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
It is weird. I thought there were be more houses or, at least, one more building to poke around. [ but nope. what they've seen is what they've got so far.

though the town of dust tumbles is all but a faded snapshot in his processors, daylight distinctly recalls it being a bustling place with lots of establishments, lots of options for people to enter and interact.

and that was still considered a tiny town by the standards of their world. he wonders if the town had a chance to expand. or if this is the results of them expanding over... how long they've been here. ]
I guess the people who were here before us never got around to doing any extensive building projects.

[ which is, well, fair on their side of things. trying to survive and make the most of a bad situation is all anyone can do when they're new. when they're still around, of course, given what they've been told of resets and leftover survivors and so on.

... oh.

daylight looks up at the hats on his crest now, suddenly having a thought visibly unnerves him as he plucks the hats off him and stares down at them, expression screamed up in thought. ]

Hrrrmgh. [ daylight looks at sora now and he looks pretty worried. ] Hey- Did you have an idea where these clothes even came from?
