INTRO LOG: JULY

INTRO LOG: JULY
IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: july 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. winters, will, and rastus introduce themselves and explain the situation.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Winters and Will are waiting for you on the beach. Winters flags you down from where he's standing atop a large rock, surveying the gathering crowd. Will stands next to him, though he's monkeying with his tablet and looks rather bored. He barely looks up as Winters speaks:

"First thing's first: I'm sorry you're here. There's no easy way to break this news, so let's just get it over with, hm? You're dead. Or, ah, you've died. Call this the afterlife if you want, or don't if that ain't your thing, but point is, you're here 'cause you died. Those are the facts.

This world's dead, too. You've noticed by now it's pretty dark, yeah? That's 'cause there's no life here, not anymore. And that lantern you've got? That's your life, so to speak. The flame goes out, you die, and vice versa. Keep it close. Should be easy enough to remember on account of how the sun don't rise. You'll need something to see by.

This place is called Beacon, and that's Lake Red Jacket. Town's 'bout a mile down the road, and we've got a bonfire there, but that's the only other light you'll see in this place. Save for the moon and all, though the sky won't do you much good out in the woods. I'll let Rastus explain the bonfire to y'all.

Ah, right. I'm Ben Winters—Winters'll do—and this here's Will Ingr— What? For christ's sake, Dr. Will Ingram. Likes to think he's the brains of the operation, as you can see. If you've got questions about these tablets, he's your guy. Rastus tends to the fire, and you'll find him in town. He's married to his job in a way. And you may never've seen a person like him back wherever you came from, but don't make a big fuss over it. He's a nice fellow. Mind your manners.

The three of us are leftovers from past resets. We came here on that ferry just like you, but it's just us left now. 'Sides the Lighthouse Keeper, but it'll be a bit before you get to meet her. She's got control over the town, see, and if she ain't satisfied with a group's performance, they get the axe. Town gets reset. If she pulls a reset on you folks, a couple of you might end up like me and Will here, giving this speech to the next crop."

The red beam of the lighthouse pulses over the group, over the trees. Winters glances up to watch it swing out over the bay.

"But don't hold it against her. Ain't her fault we're in this mess, and we've all got a job to do, including you.

For now, concentrate on accepting your lot, yeah? We're here to answer your questions, but we ain't gonna tell you all there is to know just yet. Some things are best learned on your own, and some of it we just don't want to saddle you with yet. There's a limit to how long we can stay here safely, that's true, but thing is, we do got time. Time enough to play this smart. Do better than the folks before us did. Settle in, make peace, explore a bit if you're up for it. Use these first couple weeks to come to grips. You ain't gonna be any good to the town if you don't sort yourself out before worrying about what comes next.

So listen up: You're dead. You died. Whatever your old life was, it's done now. None of us can go back, so all we've got is forward. Welcome to Beacon. Could be worse, yeah?"

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, all three NPCs will be available for chatting with, whether your character wants to make casual conversation or ask questions about all this. The headers on each NPC toplevel are there for easy reference as to what each of them are responsible for, but you're welcome to go to any NPC for whatever reason. You're welcome to assume your character has overheard any NPC conversation to learn more about the game. After the NPC threads have died down, we'll compile the info learned ICly and add it to the game history page. If your character would contribute something specific to the game history records, let us know!

day two

[personal profile] dualikey 2019-07-03 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's not sure anyone's started to think of this place as home, but at the same time, Sora had lived most of his life on a small island. When there isn't a whole lot of real estate to go around people find routines of their own to settle into. Besides, they've only just gotten here; there's plenty of unknown but there's also-

He's seen it a few times, even if he hasn't interrupted.
Every now and again, someone cries.

Sora spends most of his first day settling in inside the boathouse, taking his cues from the over-packed rooms of the Invincible and finding a spot of his own. But by the second day, without the moon looming overhead it's inevitable that he makes his way back towards town square. There's something comforting about being near the bonfire itself and the shadows it throws over the buildings nearby. A few people drift near the Inn's door and Sora pokes his head in first, catching sight of the tables and chairs and whole bar that he'd managed to ignore the first time around. There aren't any faces inside that he recognizes, but then. It's hard to ignore the creepy mask staring back at him. There's a lantern propped up underneath it and the way it's angled makes it stare outward with glowing eyes. Sora doesn't make the choice to come closer to it so much as he just sort of finds himself halfway there.]

Well... you don't look like you're gonna play hockey with it either.

[ She's not sure if it's his words, or his boldness in coming closer that causes the corner of her mouth to hook upwards. The slightest hint of a grin that on features as shadowed as hers, looks something closer to a smirk. She appears to consider that before nodding and lifting her shoulder in a shrug. The glass of clear, brown liquid remaining untouched in front of her. ]

Come Winter when that lake freezes over... [ As if she actually would. Hell, as if this place even had seasons.]

Flying pucks aren't the only thing a face needs to be protected from.

[ And her face is at present, the only inch of her aside from her hands that remain uncovered. What's the bet she's got some gloves tucked away in the pockets of her black cargo pants? ]

[If he was still the same boy from the islands, before Ansem had taken away his home and his friends and started him on this whole big journey- he might have felt a little more uncertain in the moment. But that's what journeys do, isn't it? They've made his ideas about the world and the people in it so much broader. Sora's met plenty gruff quiet types along the way and in his experience, even the ones that didn't always make the best choices- their hearts were in the right place. It was the guys that started monologuing about having plans and knowing everything that he needed to watch out for.

It's the reason that Sora keeps coming forward anyway- not enough to crowd her space, but enough to end up at the bar beside her. He's not about to drink anything behind it, it all looks pretty gross (and brown!!) but he props his arms up on it all the same.]

I don't think that mask's really gonna stop you from turning into a fish.

A what now?

[ It's by far the most unexpected thing he could have said to her, so much so that her shoulders are shaking with unshed laughter and a smile, like nothing anyone here has seen so far, brightens up her face as her eyes shine with something caught between confusion and amusement. ]

I'll bite... How is it you figure I'm going to turn into a fish?

[It isn't really arrogance that has Sora starting to puff up around the edges. It's mostly just a short lifetime of close friends that have never failed to poke fun at him. He's used to being laughed at after all, and for saying things that end up being funny even when he's not trying to be, but he wouldn't mind being taken seriously now that he's here! Unfortunately the scrunched up look on his face, however briefly it lasts, does pretty much nothing to help his case.] You know! Like Winters! With his whole-

[Sora lifts one forearm into the space between them only to wave the fingers of his opposite hand all around it. It's a demonstration of, something. Something wooshy, if the sound effect he makes has anything to do with it.] Scales and stuff.

He said if we die here we come back less us.

[ She looks completely dumbfounded, staring at Sora like maybe he's a few sandwiches short of a picnic, but he would see the flash of understanding in her eyes as it all slips into place. The scales, she'd noticed but had dismissed pretty quickly, on account of the less than normal people she'd seen around the town. What he was suggesting opened up a whole world of possibilities, however, and now along with that shine of comprehension, is something close to respect as she looks at him. ]

You find that out yourself? The thing about Winters?

[There's a moment just after he says it that Sora realizes something gets stuck, but then, her very visible pause is a strong clue. She doesn't freeze up or look shocked, she doesn't give him a reason to think he's managed to do something really wrong. But there's something about the way her brows land and about the shape of her mouth that slowly washes the indignation out of him.

Sora nods, both forearms on the bar, and both forearms taking his weight.]
Mn.

I asked him when we all got here. He didn't go into a whole lot of detail but it didn't feel like he was trying to lie about anything. He said some of the forest spirits could be dangerous too.

[ She nods slowly at his explanation, the ghost of a smile touching her lips at the enthusiastic innocence that he exudes with every word. It was such a simple approach, to ask instead of speculating and it was only the sort of thing you'd see from somebody as young as he was. There were probably a couple of dozen grown ass adults all trying to figure things out, and here he comes with more answers than the rest of them put together. Why? Because he asked. ]

Smart. [ Her face showing the truth in those words. ] To ask questions. Smarter still to try and gauge whether he was lying or not.

[ Leaning forward and resting her elbows on the table. ]

So what else did he say about the forest spirits?

[personal profile] dualikey 2019-07-10 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[Is it a difference in perspective or simply in age? Sora isn't embarrassed to admit it, but his friends all do more thinking than him. Donald and Goofy always had to be cajoled into going along with his latest reckless idea, while Riku, Kairi, and even the King tended to take a little more time trying to put a plan together. Sora's thoughtfulness had always been reserved for people, not for furthering an agenda- and he thinks that's probably why she's turning this expression on him at all. He's done something unexpected, even if he doesn't understand entirely what it was.

Sora had asked because he wanted to know- and he answers now because he's happy to share what he's learned. He's always had a cooperative nature; while he doesn't know if any of them will really end up getting out of this place, he's used to being a small part of a much larger whole. They're all going to have to rely on each other. He doesn't see any reason to start being evasive now.]

Not a whole lot. I didn't even think to ask 'till later if there were water spirits too, but he hasn't messaged me back and I thought he'd probably be busy. And then after I heard that thing about resets I wondered if maybe they were people like us once. I've never seen a forest spirit before.

[The corner of his mouth tugs into a thoughtful little frown.]

Did he tell you anything?
