EVENT LOG: BURY A FRIEND

EVENT LOG:
BURY A FRIEND

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: october 9-17.
content: the hallucinations begin...
warnings: psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.

it's probably something that shouldn't be said out loud

October 9 feels like a normal day at first, save for the red lighthouse beam cutting through the darkness overhead. You know by now—or you've heard—that the lighthouse is only active during ferry arrivals and events... And there's definitely no ferry docked at the, er. Beach. The town is quiet, the forest spirits behave business-as-usual, Rastus doesn't know what's up. Whatever's going on, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

And you will, though the hallucinations are subtle at first: objects moving when they shouldn't, people's proportions looking just a bit off, voices in an empty room, and so on. Is it just your mind playing tricks in the darkness? Might be! Will did warn you all about the effects of living without a sun and a proper day/night cycle.

As the days go on, the hallucinations are harder to ignore, no matter how much you may wish to wave them off as flukes. What's wrong with everyone's faces? When did all the howling start? Who do you hold onto when the world drops out from under you? And those hands...

While you might know it can't be real, it certainly feels real. But at least it can't last forever!

...Right?

"Hard to say this early." Which is a no, but only because he spent a good portion of that day nearly drowning, and then recovering from said incident.

"Why's the wand concerning, though? I don't know much about magic."

Jo isn't sure if she should go ahead and explain how dangerous magic is in her world. She feels like it's a very good explanation (and rule to follow) but...

Showing her cards that easily seems dangerous.

"We don't know what they can do."

"True of anyone here. Magic has a lot of potential for both good and bad, as far as I can see. But like I said, I'm not very familiar. Are you?"

If not, well. It's good sense not to trust too easily. It's a little startling how naive some of the people here seem to be. He almost envies the sort of world they might have come from, where trust can be so readily given.

"Nothing good ever happens with magic involved." Jo crosses her arms over her chest, sighing quietly.

"It corrupts people." Which she thinks has to be true. Surely someone out there decided to try to use it for good, but every witch ends up hurting people. It's not good.

"Nothing, huh? That's a strong statement," he says, lifting an eyebrow. It sure goes counter to what he's heard from Ambrose, who is the only one he's spoken to extensively on the topic. Then again, while he likes the man well enough, he does take much of what he says with a grain of salt considering he's admitted himself to doing things that weren't exactly legal in his world, and ended up being hunted down and killed by angels.

"What kind of things have you seen magic do in your world that leads you to say that?"
knifecollecting: (I made a lot of mistakes)

"People die. They do something stupid for power and innocent people pay." Jo doesn't exactly consider the witches themselves innocent, but she's heard enough.

It's not worth it.

"Nothing comes without a price."

People aren't born with magic, then. For some reason, he hadn't even thought to ask any of the few he's met here how they got their powers. But from what he knows of Ambrose, he can see how that might fit in - as one who practices dark magic, who follows God's enemy and became an enemy himself, and whose world had laws against exposing the nonmagical to the powers that people like him possessed, it actually makes quite a lot of sense that in order to achieve such powers he might have had to strike some kind of dark bargain.

"I didn't realize it wasn't innate," he admits. "It must seem to a lot of you like I ask stupid questions at times. It's just all new to me."

Jo wouldn't go so far as to call them enemies of God, but she also isn't sure God actually cares. Lucifer was trying to end humanity and there wasn't any help.

She laughs quietly when he said it might seem like a stupid question.

"None of us know what everyone else knows. We might as well ask."
