EVENT LOG: BURY A FRIEND

EVENT LOG:
BURY A FRIEND

characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: october 9-17.
content: the hallucinations begin...
warnings: psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.

it's probably something that shouldn't be said out loud

October 9 feels like a normal day at first, save for the red lighthouse beam cutting through the darkness overhead. You know by now—or you've heard—that the lighthouse is only active during ferry arrivals and events... And there's definitely no ferry docked at the, er. Beach. The town is quiet, the forest spirits behave business-as-usual, Rastus doesn't know what's up. Whatever's going on, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

And you will, though the hallucinations are subtle at first: objects moving when they shouldn't, people's proportions looking just a bit off, voices in an empty room, and so on. Is it just your mind playing tricks in the darkness? Might be! Will did warn you all about the effects of living without a sun and a proper day/night cycle.

As the days go on, the hallucinations are harder to ignore, no matter how much you may wish to wave them off as flukes. What's wrong with everyone's faces? When did all the howling start? Who do you hold onto when the world drops out from under you? And those hands...

While you might know it can't be real, it certainly feels real. But at least it can't last forever!

...Right?

( the weather has changed in Beacon, it's definitely not as warm as it was when Matt arrived. (it is very unsettling to him that he's been in this place long enough for the season to change.) that said, it's probably not cold enough to merit shivering — not unless you're fresh in from the lake, after a very untimely swim.

he still hears the chattering of teeth and the vibrating of a particularly intense shiver, despite it. it's not quiet, considering he can hear it over the roar of the fire. mildly concerned, he follows the sound, heat tilted like a dog listening for something far away.
) Are you all right? ( he asks, a little uncertain. his senses aren't as good as they used to be, and Matt of all people is incredibly aware. still, he thinks he'd be able to tell if his freezing company was wet. they don't seem to be, so why are they so cold? it's not much under sixty degrees. )

[It really isn't that cold, but when it's even slightly so and you're looking at snow everywhere...suggestion can be a powerful thing. And besides that, the fire is hot and makes the surrounding areas seem that much colder.]

I'm okay as long as I stay right here. M'not dressed for snow.

[Because clearly Matt can also see and feel the snow.]

( well, he can't see the snow. he can't see anything. that's not the point, he still knows it isn't snowing. and that the bonfire doesn't give off much in the way of heat anyway. he frowns, before crouching to get a little closer to the small, shivering ball. )

We should get you somewhere warm. Inside. ( Matt knows it's a hallucination, he's just not sure how to broach it yet. he's trying to feel out how intensely it's affecting him. )

[Hm. That's slightly awkward. But even if he couldn't see it, he should be able to feel it, right? Right? So thinks Prompto..]

But then we'd have to leave the fire.

[Which is bad. Fire = much warmth.]

But I could do with a blanket or three, so I don't stay here forever. [But where to go?] Uh...how about the bar?

I think you'll find it warmer inside.

( if they walk away from the trigger of the hallucination, it might lessen the grip on his mind. he might be able to realize it's not actually that cold after all. as it is, Matt can tell the kid is convinced, between the way he shivers and his teeth clatter together when he talks. )

Let's stop and get a few blankets from the store on the way. That'll help. ( Matt touches Prompto's shoulder, and it's true the kid feels cold, just not hypothermic cold. which is good, that's harder to warm up from. ) I'll walk with you. What's your name? I think you must be new, I don't recognize your voice.

Gotta be warmer inside, definitely.

[It might not help because the hallucination is technically everywhere he can see. But getting inside will definitely help, unless his brain goes entirely weird and decides it's also snowing indoors.]

Okay. The store is...somewhere over that way? [He thinks he might remember where it is.] I think...

I am...just showed up here a few weeks ago. Name's Prompto. Yours?

( especially considering they can crank a thermostat, at the very least. snowing indoors wouldn't even be the weirdest of hallucinations Matt has heard of, though he has to hope they'll be spared. it's bizarre how completely the body could follow the inaccurate images of the mind; Prompto does need to be warmed up, and for lack of better word, promptly. pronto works too. )

You're right. It's not too far. ( Matt knows where it is, despite the whole blind thing. he's been long enough that people don't question how easily he gets around as much — he's had months to get to know the place. nevermind the fact he seemed to get around just fine when he first arrived, too... it's not important, don't worry about it

he offers a hand to help Prompto up from his prone position.
) Nice to meet you, Prompto. ( unusual name, he thinks. probably not English. ) Matthew, though I usually go by Matt. It's easier.
