EVENT LOG: BURY A FRIEND

EVENT LOG:
BURY A FRIEND
characters: everyone.
location: around town.
date/time: october 9-17.
content: the hallucinations begin...
warnings: psychological horror. please cw tags appropriately.
it's probably something that shouldn't be said out loud
October 9 feels like a normal day at first, save for the red lighthouse beam cutting through the darkness overhead. You know by now—or you've heard—that the lighthouse is only active during ferry arrivals and events... And there's definitely no ferry docked at the, er. Beach. The town is quiet, the forest spirits behave business-as-usual, Rastus doesn't know what's up. Whatever's going on, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.
And you will, though the hallucinations are subtle at first: objects moving when they shouldn't, people's proportions looking just a bit off, voices in an empty room, and so on. Is it just your mind playing tricks in the darkness? Might be! Will did warn you all about the effects of living without a sun and a proper day/night cycle.
As the days go on, the hallucinations are harder to ignore, no matter how much you may wish to wave them off as flukes. What's wrong with everyone's faces? When did all the howling start? Who do you hold onto when the world drops out from under you? And those hands...
While you might know it can't be real, it certainly feels real. But at least it can't last forever!
...Right?

PUPPIES
he's getting off easy on this one, all told, though that doesn't mean he's enjoying himself. he's plenty worried about everyone around him as they slowly lose grip on their sanity. there's only so many places one blind guy can be at once, and all too many people hallucinating.
Matt hears Jo approach, and the panic of her heartbeat slows him before she can say a thing. ) A hellhound? ( he can guess what that is by name alone, though he's not confident about any animals in Beacon. it won't do much for her fear to simply declare her wrong, and if she's right Matt doesn't want to tangle with anything that goes by the name of Hellhound. he obligingly follows. ) What are we dealing with, here? How far away was it?
Re: PUPPIES
At least in Carthage they had the Colt.]
Maybe 10 yards last I saw a sign of it.
no subject
And it's right behind us? ( because honestly, he does think he'd be able to hear something barreling towards them, if it's as giant as she claims. )
no subject
[She stops to take a breath, turning as she inhales to try to catch any sign of it.]
It might not be close, but they never lose a scent.
no subject
he won't push her much more until she feels they're safe, though. )
Let's get inside. ( once she feels secure, he'll worry about trying to feel out the possibility they might not need to run for their lives. )
no subject
Uh, closest building. Let's go. [She doesn't wait for him to chime in with a suggestion, instead just taking off with his hand still clenched in hers.]
no subject
and he doesn't press about the idea there might not be anything following until she finds them some sort of shelter. as she's shutting the door, he even finds a heavy bureau that they can use to block it closed. ) Here, ( he calls, setting his lantern on the top and preparing to push when she joins him. )
no subject
Okay. Ready? [They need to move fast. Jo couldn't hear them outside, but she knows they can still track her.
The hounds won't give up.]
no subject
( when she starts to drag, he'll put all he has into shoving it where she leads it. he's stronger than he looks, between the two of them they can shift the heavy piece in front of the door. once it's settled, he allows himself a few minutes to catch his breath, waiting for indication of the devil hound that's supposedly following them.
he doesn't hear anything, so finally, finally, he's ready to press. )
How close were they? Do you hear them? ( because, uh, he sure doesn't. ) Where did you get experience with something called a hell hound, anyway?
no subject
His question makes her stop and she glances at him with a sharp exhalation of breath.]
Missouri. [Which seems about right. She scrubs her hand over her eyes and tries to listen.]
I don't know how close. I can't hear them now. [But that doesn't mean anything.]
They can be quiet.
no subject
I can't hear them either. My hearing is stronger than you'd think. ( this is literally the closest Matt has come to admitting he has superpowers to anyone wow. besides Mary, but she doesn't count! ) People have been hearing things, seeing things — have these hounds ever been in Beacon before?
no subject
The question makes her stop. She doesn't like either option, honestly. Either they're here, or-
What. She's imagining them?]
They're invisible. I might not have seen them. [She sighs, scrubbing at her face with the back of her hand.]
They might not have needed to attack.
no subject
considering he's basically questioning her perception of reality, she reacts fairly calmly. he wants to keep her that way. )
It doesn't have to be visible. Hallucinations can be auditory, too. I know mine are. ( granted, he's blind. that makes a certain amount of sense. he'd for sure know something was up if he was literally seeing things. ) How fast would they gain on us? Would they try and break in after us?
