INTRO LOG: OCTOBER

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
DON'T STOP ME NOW

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: october 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. scavenger hunt prizes are awarded. the ferry capsizes in a blaze of glory.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for playing catch up! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

When the ferry docks, it seems as though you've been spared from any weirdness this month! It's good to have a break now and then, isn't it? And if you participated in the scavenger hunt, you're probably eagerly awaiting your promised prize—

But, ohp, what's that sound? Is that the ferry's engine firing up again? The ship roars to life again as some brave mutineers overthrow its autopilot system. Crowley and the Winter Soldier man the ferry's control room while Aziraphale flits between the cargo hold and the deck, attempting to assuage any accidental kidnapees with reassuring words and cake.

Unfortunately, the joyride is shortlived. Between the ferry's complex control panel and the haphazard attempts to override it, all the group manages to do is send the boat charging full speed ahead—which would be great if it wasn't facing the beach. The ferry jolts forward and careens smack into the dock, tearing down the entire structure and punching a sizeable hole in the ferry's hull.

Well, that could've gone better. But there's no time to dwell on the mistakes of the very recent past! The ferry is sinking, and quickly! Looks like you'll have to scramble if you want to save what's left in the cargo hold before the whole thing goes under... And that's gonna be awfully tricky without a dock.

Oh, and maybe save the new arrivals? Make sure they don't drown? But, then again, if they go down with the ship, they'll just show up again in the church... The same can't be said for the restock for the general store!

As smoke billows from the damaged ferry and the last the harbor disappears into the lake, the Lighthouse Keeper appears on the network with a pretty straightforward question. Also, the ferry's song changes, so. That happens.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.

And regarding the ferry disaster... Well, you have some options. Here's what you need to know:
  • This is a player plot organized by MJ, Xy, and Gail! A big thank-you to them for providing us with this intro log event!

  • Whether or not your character and any packages addressed to them are affected by this plot is up to you! If you would like to assume your character avoids dealing with this chaos and somehow grabs their delivery without issue, go right ahead!

  • Similarly, if you're looking for an opportunity to make your character's life harder, injury and death are always on the table! Or maybe it's your package that takes the abuse, lost forever to the lake's depths or washing up all waterlogged a week or two down the road. In short: How you engage with this plot is entirely up to you.

  • What happens to the ferry and the dock? Within a couple of hours, the ferry will sink completely, and anything on board when it goes down is lost forever. Which bodes super well for the ferry, huh? Sure hope the next batch of newcomers has some strong swimmers. Oh, and the dock is gone, too. If you want it back, you'll have to rebuild it.

  • As for Crowley, Aziraphale, Bucky, and anyone else on the ferry or dock during the collision... Hope you boys like concussions, bruised ribs, and a broken bone or two, because you've got 'em! The exact injuries are up to you, but they're the equivalent of a semi-serious car accident.

  • One last thing: The fate of the shop restocks, including all of the food for the month, depends on you! Let us know if your character will be participating in the rescue attempt. In exchange for letting us beat up your character, you can save a portion of the month's supplies! We'll let you all know on October 3 what the rations for the rest of the month will look like.

Don't make fun of the broke and people with bad taste.

[ he says, somewhat lightly. enough to mask his bad mood, he feels like. this could be just a normal level of caustic, not "What the hell am I doing?" caustic. An important enough distinction for him, as he didn't want to review the events of the day. Notably, saving a man he wanted as little to do with as possible. like he was still his sidekick.

it left a bad taste in his mouth, and he wished he'd been half as clever to bring something to snack on, in proper commiseration fashion. he glances at Peter-- notices the awkward way he's holding himself, and raises his eyebrows just slightly. but he doesn't ask the question.

he's wondering if he just expresses it enough, then will he just answer the question anyway? "What happened?" ]

There are plenty of options that don't include peas.

[ peter answers, before shoving his fork back into the pot and eyeing said offending peas as if he's exceptionally put-upon by all of it.

—don't get him wrong, he notices that eyebrow quirk, knows the question that's being asked by not being asked, and honestly? peter doesn't really want to talk about it. if it was johnny, he'd — well, it would be a disaster of a conversation, he'd be mocked and it'd be deserved; and he'd explain it with a remark about parker luck even if, actually, it was just GenericTM bad luck that was part and parcel of—

—well, it was the reason why spider-fails.com existed.

he's silent, then, just for a moment, before shovelling a mouthful of noodles (quote unquote) and chicken-flavoured soya protein into his mouth. ]

So, one of my friends from home — he's an idiot, by the way — is a popular (bizarrely) super-hero, and before we became friends, [ uttered with the mild distaste of someone that is really, genuinely fond of the person they're talking shit about ], he hired me to take some photos. [ pause; more food. (oh, wait, that sounded a bit weird.) ] Of him. Because he was jealous of Spider-Man. [ another pause, although this time peter's expression flickers a little, as if he's just realising how ridiculous this sounds. ] Okay, so the paper I worked for hated Spider-Man: local menace, cause of all that's wrong with the world and New York, but mostly New York, bringer of tragedy and, like, the cause of the corruption of youth and the downfall of society. Y'know, the usual.

Anyway, he wanted to be on the front page of the paper, I needed the money. [ loose shrug of a shoulder. ] He thought I had it all — and my "good luck" [ air quotes with his one entirely functional hand, fork still in hand, punctuated by a huff of breath that actually manages to be a laugh ] Parker Luck, he called it. [ beat. ] I thought he had it all: girls, family, no money issues, and I tended to have bad luck whenever I did something that I thought was the right thing, which I, uh, called the Parker Luck— [ punctuated by a sharp glance towards jason because DON'T EVEN. ]

—This isn't either version of that, but let's pretend that it is.
mind_blown: (What's up danger?)

[personal profile] mind_blown 2019-10-06 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh. [ confirmed, his hand is hurt? he knew he was holding himself awkwardly, but with that one motion, Peter confirmed his unasked question. And with a story. A story about his terrible luck-- and in a way, Jason could relate to that. Peter's friend sounded a little bit, just a little bit, like Dick.

But, he didn't want to bring up Dick. Not after his leaving-- the first time he'd seen the actual Dick, before KGBeast did what KGBeast did best. It kind of sucked to hate and like someone that much. but still. he tilts his head slightly as Peter recounts the story, piecing together the final bit, what he was working his way towards.

and what he didn't want to just outright say.

fair enough. he could respect that. injury is something of a faux pas among superheroes, when it's something small ball like this. they were supposed to be better than that. he can only imagine that big blue would probably fly to a new cave of solitude and sulk a bit. so the fact that peter's complaining about freeze dried peas is at least a notable improvement. ]

Roundabout way to get to what you're wanting to say, but I'm still following. So far, anyway.

That was kind of it, [ peter admits. ] There used to be a nurse — still is, I guess — called Night Nurse. [ pause, and a slight laugh. ] I know, sounds like it should be someone's villain name, right? But no, they're just a nurse that, uh, helps out super-heroes after they've been hurt in a fight, or if they're— [ a brief twist of his lips, as if he can't quite decide on what he wants to say next or how to say it, before settling on: ]particular about their identity. [ beat. ] I kinda wish she was here — but at least I can play it off as: oh, yeah, well there's a reason my high school bully called me Puny Parker.

[ punctuated by a breath of pause, and he shoots jason a sideways glance, lips quirking into a slightly crooked, self-aware smile. ] —I know, by the way: not everyone cares that much, it's not all about me. It's just a pretty tough habit to break. [ beat. ] A habit forms after a month, right? [ not really a question, just a comment. ] What d'you call a habit of thirteen years?
mind_blown: (All these broken backs... tragic.)

[ as he listens, he pulls out a small first aid kit. it's not going to have that Peter needs, maybe an ace wrap, maybe they could work something into a splint while he heals. who knows. Jason wasn't sure how it looked when Spiderman got hurt, or if he could heal quicker. It's hard to tell. Probably, because that's how these things worked. But in the meantime, he could open the thing up for Peter to take a look, while he worked on cleaning the cut in his left hand. ]

Lifestyle, at that point. [ a short answer for a short question. ]

There are people here who can heal, though. If you don't want to wait for that. [ an action Jason readily admits Peter might be wary of for lots of reasons.

An action he wasn't taking for his own reasons. And instead taking Bruce's small bit of kindness. ]
webshoots: (( mask ) feeding the pigeons)

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-10-06 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking obsession, but lifestyle is probably the kinder answer.

[ peter half-answers, watching jason with at-first curiosity, then a loose, vague familiarity. there's not a whole lot in the kit that'll help peter, so he doesn't ask for anything; if he'd been at home, he'd probably have made his way to the aforementioned night nurse, or to doc strange, or — more likely — just home, to mj, who was definitely the provider of bandages and care and everything that peter generally wouldn't do for himself, whilst he'd sit there and mend his suit with some needle and thread.

he's wondered, once or twice, what rastus would make of him asking for the red and blue — the suit, he probably wouldn't be able to get, but the materials? sure, why not. there's a nostalgia factor to it that the black suit just doesn't have, and it makes him think of periods of time in his life he'd really rather not repeat. (kraven—.) ]
—And yeah, I know. From what I've managed to work out, there are limitations. One of the new arrivals gave it a go, but. [ peter shrugs dismissively: it was neither here nor there, and he's honestly had worse injuries. if anything, his ego and pride were bruised more than anything else. ] No bueno.
mind_blown: (I like hard chances I might lose.)

[personal profile] mind_blown 2019-10-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's unfortunate.

[ said calmly as he bandages his hand, now that it's clean enough. he looks a little amused, if... well. actually, there's a bit o a bite in his grin. not just from pain. he gives his hand a test squeeze, testing the bandaging. satisfied, he lets his hand drop. and then glances at Peter again. ]

I thought my day was bad, but that's gotta sting in more ways than one, huh.

[ it's not a question. He doesn't intone it like a question. but he can respect having a lot of things on your mind. ]
webshoots: (( face ) i loved this arc)

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-10-06 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone's managed to have a good day. [ peter remarks, gaze shifting back to jason's face, just for a moment. the implication is obviously that it's bad beyond the ferry sinking and an unknown number of supplies being lost to the questionable depths of — wherever they actually are. ] But yeah, sure — although probably more for the guy doing the healing than for me, if we're honest. What's a broken bone when you've got a mild healing factor that vaguely accelerates the healing process, but doesn't lessen the pain at all?

[ spoken like a guy who has definitely done this before, multiple times, and doesn't always manage to be entirely gracious about it, either. being sidelined is — well, it makes peter feel if not useless, at the very least useless-adjacent. ]

—So what did you do? I'd say we could be twins, I hear that's in, but I don't think your bandages are the kind that people tend to sign.
mind_blown: (What's up danger?)

[personal profile] mind_blown 2019-10-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ill advised rescue mission. My gut said I should have walked away, and hey, it might have been right.

[ he shrugs lightly, and his tone is mostly joking, but otherwise, he looks at the fire. ]

Forgot how much rope burn sucks.

Also, we could never be twins.
webshoots: (Default)

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-10-06 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ despite the tone, ill-advised rescue mission earns a look, one that says that intrinsically, peter disagrees, although he gets it. there've been people peter's saved that, whilst he doesn't regret saving them, there's always been part of him that's wondered what would have happened if he hadn't. there's definitely a conversation there, but he gets the feeling that if they're going to have it, it's one that jason ought to start himself. ]

—Yeah, you're right, I'm definitely the better looking of the two of us. [ is what he says instead, lips quirking in amusement. ]
mind_blown: (I like hard chances I might lose.)

[personal profile] mind_blown 2019-10-06 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
In your dreams.

[ it earns half a laugh, though he doesn't look at Peter directly. just weighs his options for a second. does he want to have that conversation? head off the questions before they start? he hates the damn network, but he can't deny that it'd be useful if it weren't so fucking public.

it's an irritant. ]

But hey, more people from Gotham are here now. So I don't sound like the lone crazy guy talking about a city no one's ever heard of.

[ only Peter's never heard of. he hasn't spoken about Gotham to anyone else. ]

Up to and including someone I really wanted to avoid, but he's already figured out we know each other. Just can't-- and won't- figure out how.
webshoots: (Default)

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-10-06 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't—. [ pause; amendment: ] You know there are people from entirely different worlds here. One otherwise unheard of city really isn't the craziest thing. [ lone crazy guy isn't the point, and peter knows it. it's the rest of it, and peter's not entirely sure what it says about jason, about gotham that he's so cagey about it and them.

on the one hand, though peter's thought about what he'd do if anyone else turned up from new york, his new york, he's not really sure how he'd deal with it. if it was mj? cry, probably. (definitely.) jonah? walk into the ocean and not come back out. ]

Is he the same guy that you know? [ peter settles on asking. they'd had this conversation as a theoretical the first time they'd met — the same person, but not the same. it could be as simple as different points in time, or it could be a little more complex than that. either way, peter can't deny that it's not unsettling, and he's practically an expert at dealing with a variation on the theme by now. ]
mind_blown: (Don't know who I am dancing with.)

[personal profile] mind_blown 2019-10-06 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what you decided to focus on?

[ though yeah, most people from Gotham tended to be some sort of cagey about it, he knew that much. it was hard not to be. Still, he gives Peter a look at that, something mildly unimpressed. but still. it's the next question that redeems him somewhat.

also he'd be the first to admit he was some level of crazy anyway. It was par for the course when you took a dip in a Lazarus Pool. ]

Anyway, I don't know. Chances are high that they aren't the guys I know exactly. Just like Dick wasn't the same as what I knew. But it doesn't even matter, because they're from, what, 20 years in the past?
webshoots: (( mask ) feeding the pigeons)

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-10-07 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
When it's what you open with, [ peter responds, the utterance half a groan and half just tired, before eyeing the remains of his quote-unquote cup noodle. he places it down on the ground beside his feet, leaning forward and resting his chin in his hand — clearly it matters enough. his gaze shifts to jason for a second, then back to the bonfire: most of them here were between twenty and thirty, so whoever it was knew jason slightly later in life, which hints at the relationship (or lack thereof) between the two; says a lot about why jason might want to avoid them.

he thinks about what he'd do if it were norman (avoidance would pretty much be out of the question); otto? well, he was a better person. trying, certainly. he had regrets, but he'd helped people, he was learning, and wasn't that kind of the point? it didn't change anything otto had done, but it meant that maybe he'd do something good in the present, in the future. avoidance, again, probably wouldn't be the route peter'd choose.

he stretches his legs out in front of him, moving a little more slowly and delicately than usual, being careful enough that he doesn't jerk his wrist, before huffing an audible sigh. between people that peter misses and wouldn't want to see here, not ever, and the people peter basically never wants to see, ever, just generally, can they please just stay locked up, for once

peter's not convinced avoidance would be the answer; not convinced pretending he's someone else from somewhere else ever works. ]

—So you're saying that whatever issue the two of you have, hasn't happened for him yet. Might not happen. [ there's a pause. he wants to say: you'd prefer it, wouldn't you? if you were the lone crazy guy, but he doesn't. whatever this is, evidently it's not easy for jason, and there's a moment where peter remembers that despite everything, jason is just a kid, really. not a kid-kid, but he's still pretty young. (and he'd been twelve—.)

god, he'd been such an ass at jason's age, struggling to balance his life — peter parker, friendships, relationships, schoolwork, work, spider-man, bills... ]

I'd ask if you're okay, but you've already said your day's sucked and whatever it is, whoever he is to you matters enough that you want to avoid him, twenty years displaced, so—.

I can't say what I'd do in your shoes. I've never been in your shoes, not like this. [ tony, what if it was tony, and he'd just realised (again) that he'd made the biggest mistake of his life—. ] But maybe you've got a chance to change it for him. Make it different for a version of you. Would that matter?

[ he knows that peter is trying to help, but he really doesn’t have the background of everything that could possibly be there. Half of which Jason knows is squarely his fault, because of his stubborn resistance to let go the grudge that started all of this.

Just like Bruce couldn’t just let the Joker go, even though the guy was a clear maniac, and his existence alone having caused so much pain and misery in Gotham. Just like Bruce disowning him to protect Cobblepot, the guy that framed his actual father, who was just some dumb, nameless henchman in a sea of super villains.

To say it’s complicated is just slightly understating it.

But he can appreciate the thought, even if “fixing it” is a hope he doesn’t have. Not anymore. ]

There’s no guarantee we’ll ever meet. Also, while I’m not ignorant about multiple universes, it just seems like a bad idea to add time travel on top of it.

Tell him the future, try to get him to understand another side of an argument I hope doesn’t happen? Think that maybe this version of him isn’t the immovable object at what cost?

[ it seems like a bad idea to add time travel on top of it.

the snort that earns isn't entirely involuntary — very few of peter's encounters with the multiverse were strictly voluntary, and the choice to add time travel was— well, it was a choice in the strictest of definitions, but given the who responsibility deal, given the prospective alternative—.

but yeah, bad idea, peter won't argue with that. ]
Sure, you've got me there.

But no, I didn't mean tell him the future, your past, whatever. [ he half-amends, before conceding: ] That's opening a can of worms no-one wants to go near, believe me. [ a beat and the corners of his lips quirk into a crooked, fleeting smile that's less amusement and more acceptance. ] Ask me how I know, [ he adds, with a loose wave of hand. (it's punctuated by the thought of geez, using the one hand is going to get very tiring, very quickly.)

immovable object, though. that — explains a few things. ]
You're holding on to something that exists for only one of you here and I know you don't need me to tell you that, so: what are you hoping for? Now he knows you know him, that a version of him knows you. Because this is going to suck a whole lot more you than it is for him. The cost is your peace of mind.

I’m hoping to get out of here. This is just extra BS I really didn’t need. [he says it with the lightest of shrugs. He didn’t need to really elaborate beyond that.

But he probably would.]

It’s not like I came here with the idea “I’ll fix all my outstanding problems.” Actually, it’s probably the complete opposite. [that beacon was yet another problem to be solved.

What was he hoping for? He’d spent the better part of a month avoiding Bruce. He thought the answer would be pretty obvious by this point: he wanted to not deal with one of his most frustrating problems on top of this whole situation. It was an evasive tactic, sure. But he figured that was better than counting on him or Bruce to keep their feelings in check the whole time.

Because if he could be emotional about stuff, that was nothing compared to the Bat himself.]

[ hoping to get out of here. peter pulls a face at that, something between annoyance and frustration, the barest hint of an eye roll punctuating the expression. it's not directed at jason, nor the sentiment, but the situation — it's not the first time peter's been stuck somewhere like this ("like" this, loosely speaking), but he thinks it might be the first time he's been stuck somewhere like this for so long.

(but hey, who's counting?)

it's beginning to grate, and the escape attempt from earlier in the day was just the cherry on top of a situation that already sucked. ]

The last time something like this happened, I went home to a full mailbox and accusations of being Bigfoot. [ he feels like there should be a joke there, something to offset the tone, but what is there, really, to joke about? it's been four months. ] Which is basically just a day in the life of.

—But at least it didn't involve a re-enactment of Poseidon.

Does USPS even keep delivering if you don't check your mail for 2 months? [ it's a falsely light question. just playing along with the situation that Jason knows they're both frustrated with.

that if he doesn't keep his cool with, he might just start thinking about doing something reckless. honestly, if he had a good supposition about which way to go? he would have already done it. he hadn't been sold on being dead, and literally with every person he knew who came and went, and the people he knew who should be there that weren't, he became more certain that this was something else.

and maybe it would drag them down to prove it.

but talking about Beacon is a good distraction from Bruce-- and honestly. maybe that's what he needs. just to figure out literally anything else to think about.

it's not like there's a shortage. ]

My roommate kindly kept it all to one side for me. [ pause. ] And kindly organised them in ascending order of bills, from due to overdue to final notice, before kindly pointing out that my phone had been cut off and she'd had to pay for my share of the rent and electricity, before even more kindly letting me know what I owe her, with interest.

[ he shoots jason a glance. try not having a permanent address, he'd said. try not having a permanent address when your aunt is may parker, jason. try not having a permanent address when your former boss turned kinda step-brother turned former boss turned oh god they're not friends, they're just like‐ jonah's jonah, so, whatever it is when jjj is in your life.

(hadn't he experienced enough trauma?) ]

I don't know how it works when you don't have someone as kind on your side. [ if he keeps saying kind enough, will it stop sounding like a word? ] I think she even managed to find a parking ticket from the week-long period of time where I entertained the thought of learning to drive, five years ago.

[ peter looks away from jason for a second, away from the bonfire and up at the sky. as angry as he is — because he is, and it's not about his wrist, it's not even about the escape attempt, not really — he's not sure he can really put a finger on why it annoys him all so much. is it just a case of he's been here too long? the dark's getting to him? god knows he knows he doesn't get enough sleep. he'd made an off-hand comment to one of the administrators at midtown high once — maude, lovely woman — that you rarely needed as much sleep as you thought you did, but ha.

ha.

doc ingram isn't wrong that they needed to have a semblance of routine here. waking up and going to bed isn't really enough, not for him. the ferry sinking had made him realise, uncomfortably although not for the first time, what being spider-man did for him. he's restless here — there's rarely a need for spider-man, just plain old peter parker, and there's not any of peter parker's life here, which just means—.

he hates it. he hates that some idiots decided to jump on a boat and sail it out of here, into where? they hadn't done any tests, didn't know what they were sailing into, apparently didn't even know how to sail a boat.

(which, like, he doesn't either. he doesn't even know how to drive, so—.)

is it because they'd come up with an idea and acted on it? is it because they'd risked all of their lives? (well, yeah, that was definitely some of it.)

peter makes a noise and runs a hand through his hair — he doesn't know what he'll do if he goes bald, that's a terrifying, horrible thought. ben had had a pretty full head of hair, but who knew about his dad? or his mom. or his mom's mom. or—. still, there'd been that time when he'd ended up in a version of his future, and it'd looked like there could've been hair under the mask. where any of the other hims he met bald? there's a question. ]

—D'you know what winds me up the most? [ he asks, gesturing at his bad wrist and glancing back at jason, before admitting, wryly, slightly bitterly: ] If it'd worked.
