INTRO LOG: OCTOBER

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
DON'T STOP ME NOW
characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: october 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. scavenger hunt prizes are awarded. the ferry capsizes in a blaze of glory.
warnings: n/a.
welcome to beacon.
It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.
You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.
You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.
Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.
In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.•••
Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for playing catch up! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.
When the ferry docks, it seems as though you've been spared from any weirdness this month! It's good to have a break now and then, isn't it? And if you participated in the scavenger hunt, you're probably eagerly awaiting your promised prize—
But, ohp, what's that sound? Is that the ferry's engine firing up again? The ship roars to life again as some brave mutineers overthrow its autopilot system. Crowley and the Winter Soldier man the ferry's control room while Aziraphale flits between the cargo hold and the deck, attempting to assuage any accidental kidnapees with reassuring words and cake.
Unfortunately, the joyride is shortlived. Between the ferry's complex control panel and the haphazard attempts to override it, all the group manages to do is send the boat charging full speed ahead—which would be great if it wasn't facing the beach. The ferry jolts forward and careens smack into the dock, tearing down the entire structure and punching a sizeable hole in the ferry's hull.
Well, that could've gone better. But there's no time to dwell on the mistakes of the very recent past! The ferry is sinking, and quickly! Looks like you'll have to scramble if you want to save what's left in the cargo hold before the whole thing goes under... And that's gonna be awfully tricky without a dock.
Oh, and maybe save the new arrivals? Make sure they don't drown? But, then again, if they go down with the ship, they'll just show up again in the church... The same can't be said for the restock for the general store!
As smoke billows from the damaged ferry and the last the harbor disappears into the lake, the Lighthouse Keeper appears on the network with a pretty straightforward question. Also, the ferry's song changes, so. That happens.
ooc.
Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.
And regarding the ferry disaster... Well, you have some options. Here's what you need to know:
- This is a player plot organized by MJ, Xy, and Gail! A big thank-you to them for providing us with this intro log event!
- Whether or not your character and any packages addressed to them are affected by this plot is up to you! If you would like to assume your character avoids dealing with this chaos and somehow grabs their delivery without issue, go right ahead!
- Similarly, if you're looking for an opportunity to make your character's life harder, injury and death are always on the table! Or maybe it's your package that takes the abuse, lost forever to the lake's depths or washing up all waterlogged a week or two down the road. In short: How you engage with this plot is entirely up to you.
- What happens to the ferry and the dock? Within a couple of hours, the ferry will sink completely, and anything on board when it goes down is lost forever. Which bodes super well for the ferry, huh? Sure hope the next batch of newcomers has some strong swimmers. Oh, and the dock is gone, too. If you want it back, you'll have to rebuild it.
- As for Crowley, Aziraphale, Bucky, and anyone else on the ferry or dock during the collision... Hope you boys like concussions, bruised ribs, and a broken bone or two, because you've got 'em! The exact injuries are up to you, but they're the equivalent of a semi-serious car accident.
- One last thing: The fate of the shop restocks, including all of the food for the month, depends on you! Let us know if your character will be participating in the rescue attempt. In exchange for letting us beat up your character, you can save a portion of the month's supplies! We'll let you all know on October 3 what the rations for the rest of the month will look like.

Beach
And it's not the first boat accident that she's dealt with.
It's only later, when she's been thoroughly soaked and bruised, left feeling raw from the strain of her magic, that she allows herself to slow down.
This is a mistake, because she starts noticing how alone she is, the only orc among so many humans.
She was promised her death would bring her back to her ancestors. She was promised she could stand next to her mother and all the warriors she lost before her own passing. But that was a lie, or perhaps just a misunderstanding, failing to take outside factors.
Regardless, she stands alone.
In the face of that, it's easier to work.
Kettara stops, turning slowly at the question. The man who asks is human, shoulder hunched at an odd angle. Either he's in shock and hasn't noticed her skin or tusks, or he genuinely doesn't care if help comes from an orc so long as it does come. ]
What is wrong?
[ Her voice is rough and tired, but she steps closer. She's no healer, not like Krelna, but she's been trained to set bones and deal with other injuries. ]
OH NO STANDING ALONE SOBS ALREADY POOR BAE
My shoulder. It's dislocated. It needs to be put back into place.
( he says this with such bizarre calmness, like he's predicting it will be dark tomorrow (it will be). Matt is astonishingly good at tolerating pain, he gets it from his dad. thanks, Jack! he could put a shoulder back into place just by sound, though it's not quite that easy when it's his shoulder. he sort of needs a hand with that one. )
she's had a bad day
She grunts, stepping forward. ]
I can put it back. It will hurt, but not for long.
no subject
it will hurt. he's already aware of that, though the mention does earn a grimace. ) I understand. ( in fact, he knows from experience. Claire had warned him that once the shoulder fell out of place it'd be more prone to doing the same thing in the future.
well, she was right. Claire was right about a lot of things. ) Just do it. I don't need a countdown, I'm ready.
no subject
Breathe. It will pass.
[ She too speaks from experience. ]
no subject
he knows how much this will hurt and he knows that there's no helping it. so he's as ready as he's ever going to be, and it means he doesn't make a notable sound from the pain. his expression changes, limitedly, there's a grunt maybe. but overall, he's weirdly chill about it........ )
Thank you. ( his voice is a little thicker than before, the strongest tell that he is in a certain amount of pain that Matt feels inclined to show. actually, he's still not inclined, he just can't help it. he winces as he moves the stiff joint, just to make sure it's placed correctly. he appreciates her help, and her attempt to reassure him about the pain, even if he doesn't exactly need it. that she'd try means something. ) I know. That was the worst of it.
no subject
Are you hurt anywhere else?
no subject
which means he's getting up, intending to get to work on helping scavenge. )
I don't think so. ( some scrapes, here or there, nothing serious. he turns toward his company and faces her properly, though it's not quite fair to say he's looking at her. ) Were you on the ferry when it crashed? Are you all right?

Beach / Recovery
Eleven moves to help when the man calls for assistance.
He hears from behind him, just on the shore where the water laps at her feet, Eleven state:]
I can help.
[And then she grunts, as if with physical strain. The box lurches precariously, almost hitting him - but then it hovers unsteadily, lifted from his hold just enough that Eleven can begin moving it to shore, and he could still help the process by keeping a steady hand on the crate.
If the way her breath comes sharp and strained is any indication, she's running on fumes for what's she's doing.]
no subject
momentarily he's too stunned to respond, though as bizarre as telekinesis appears to a man that can't see, he can't argue that he needs help. he keeps his grip to balance it, though he doesn't fail to miss the strain in her voice and her breath. )
Just far enough that I can drag it. ( how's he going to do that? sheer determination, that's how. his expression is slightly furrowed as he tries to focus on her in the din of the voices and disruption in the water. despite the fact he's trying to lift things with one formerly dislocated shoulder, Matt worries about literally anyone else pushing themselves too far. ) How long have you been in the middle of all this?
no subject
Not so long.
[She doesn't know, precisely, finds it hard to judge with the sky being pitch black, and with everything going on.. well, keeping track of time wasn't exactly something that occured to her easily.]
On the ferry when it... drowned.
[She hesitates, obviously unsure if it's the right term, stilted in the way she speaks - stilted in a way that has nothing to do with her obvious exhaustion that has started to settle in slowly but surely.]
two tags in and i love her, save me
on the ferry when it drowned. a curious way of phrasing that, though Matt can easily connect it to a simple lack of vocabulary. it reminds him a bit of the hispanic boys that would occasionally go through St. Agnes, straddling the line between English and Spanish and not having exact mastery of the newer language. she doesn't have an accent that leads him to the conclusion she's unexperienced with English, though, which he finds curious.
he doesn't have time to worry about it at the moment, but he's certainly Noticed.
anyway, with the idea she's been working since the ferry crashed, that would mean a few hours now, if she's worked nonstop. which is too long for a little girl. even one with apparent superpowers, as far as Matt can tell. he doesn't exactly call her out immediately. he's more subtle than that. )
Here. I think this is enough. ( he doesn't want to push her any farther than she's already pushing herself. when she puts it down, he'll drag it the rest of the way. ) Can you help me with something else? Please.
aaahhh, I'm so glad <3
She's exhausted, but... she can still do more, keep pushing. Grit her teeth and tap further, deeper, into that well of power within her.
So Eleven takes a deep breath.]
Yes. What can I do?
no subject
I asked for something, that should have been on the ferry in these supplies somewhere. I've been trying to find it, but it's too small, and if it's here I haven't been able to feel it out. ( the request could almost seem condescending, to find something when he's perfectly capable and standing right here. only if she hasn't caught onto the fact he's blind, though, and Matt goes the extra step to make sure that fact is clear. )
I just need your eyes. I think it must be here, but I can't find it without the help of someone who can see. ( implying that he can't. without his sunglasses on, it's easy to note that his eyes stare past whatever is in front of them. especially when he's intentionally pointed it out. )
It was so hard not to infomod this for El xD
it doesn't occur to her to think of it as disability. Eleven's own growth is stunted, and she's never learned to associate a lack of something with weakness, has never been taught to drip pity or condescension or otherness onto anyone.
Only thing she wonders if he's scared all the time, because she's scared of the dark, and the mind of a child projects itself so easily. If so, then she concludes him to be very brave indeed. ]
I can be your eyes. What do we look for?
[ Something earnest in her voice, something steady. This isn't different to her than using telekinesis to help carry boxes. She has a power he doesn't, and she'll gladly use it to help. ]
i think that means i'm playing the manipulative asshole right then
she agrees to help him, and he's not exactly surprised. what he can tell of her already is how desperately she wants to help, even at the expense of herself. helping a blind man find something too small for him to locate on his own is still helping, just hopefully less exerting than lifting things with... magic? her mind? he's not sure. )
It's called a rosary. It looks like a necklace, or maybe a bracelet. It has a bunch of beads, I'm not sure what color, but there will be a cross on on it. I think you'll know it when you see it. ( there's a chance they won't even find the rosary he's asked for, that it sunk to the bottom of the lake like so much of the supplies. even if they can't find it, it'll be worth it to slow her down a little.
that said, he does hope they can find it; just a small piece of what he'd asked for but perhaps the most practical. he probably could find it on his own, he just hasn't been looking. having her eyes will make it easier, if it is floating around at the bottom of a crate. he's still mostly stuck to one hand, though one hand is enough to lug the top off the first crate. as they dig through the supplies, he can't help but ask. ) When you helped me before, I didn't hear you lift it with your hands.
( maybe it's a bit revealing, to ask questions so specific when he can't see... but it's true, he hadn't heard her lift it. she hadn't even been close enough. he's still curious if she'll answer how she managed to move the crate without her hands, curious enough to risk seeming too knowledgeable for a blind guy. )

recovery.
spotting matthew on the shore, she makes her way over as quickly as her own waterlogged, exhausted form will allow and settles beside him, looking him over without touching him in spite of her instinctive urges, doubting that he'll appreciate it. she knows he'll hear her heartbeat in spite of the chaos, and probably her labored breathing, but her concern is his shoulder, which looks bruised and swollen. ]
What happened?
[ yes, she can tell he's upset and would probably rather be alone, but she knows him well enough to know he's pushed himself just as far as her in spite of an injury. probably much further. ]
no subject
that said, he's not going to call her out on doing good right now. he's not really wanting to talk, period, though she asks him what wrong and he comes up with an answer. )
All of them. A whole damn library. Ruined. ( he's in a bad enough mood, he's almost tempted to throw the useless soaked book next to him back into the water, though somehow that still feels sacrilegious so he won't. he just throws it away from him, into the sand. it lands face up, blank soggy pages. it might look like a blank journal now, but it used to be something he could actually read. now it's pretty much useless. ) Why did I bother? As if there's a chance for anything but misery here.
( did she mean his shoulder? whoops, he's just going off about his soggy bible. )
no subject
she means his shoulder, but what he brings up is a library, and she knows he can sense it when her eyebrows raise as he tosses the ruined book away and into the sand. really??? practically radiates off of the expression, but she doesn't say anything. she knows the importance his religion held in his life and how it feels to lose something meaningful.
elektra doesn't say anything for a few moments, letting him fume, but she does crawl over to retrieve the book from where it's been tossed. the movement aggravates her ribs and she hisses, pausing to press a hand against it before she crawls to sit beside him again. ]
Actually, I was referring to your shoulder. [ she holds the book, not making the move to offer it back to him yet, but doubting that he really wants it gone. ]
no subject
when Elektra passes him, the scent of blood, even under skin, distracts him from his misery. if that wasn't enough, the hiss does. ) Elektra, just leave it. ( his spark of anger had been dumb and childish, yes, and now he feels worse because she hurt herself trying to pick up the ruined bible he'd rejected. Elektra ignores him. well, at least that's familiar. )
Your ribs aren't broken, are they? ( his fingers twitch with the desire to touch her and sort out if she's hurt and the refusal to let himself. ) Dislocated in the crash, since I was below deck and bounced off the wall when it happened. It's fine now. ( bc ofc to Matt, a dislocated shoulder is "fine now" once it's set and the joint is back in place. )
no subject
Not broken, I don't think. [ at least she hopes not, but he'd know better than her, wouldn't he? ] At least nothing feels that way, or out of place. [ like with him is implied in her tone, although she knows she's not exactly one to talk. ]
no subject
It's not dislocated now, ( he corrects, absolutely reading her unspoken and pointed note about his shoulder. still, he seems to relent a little with the affirmation she didn't think it was broken. he trusts her judgment and it doesn't seem that way from what he can sense. she's close enough now that surely he'd be able to tell. ) Good. Enough people got hurt in this idiocy.
( who the hell thought it was a good idea to drive the ferry straight into shore? Matt realizes it was a super shitty escape attempt but damn. even he could have gotten the direction right, and he's blind! )
no subject
'Idiocy', that's a kind word for it. [ she's got a few more colorful terms, especially when she tries to adjust her position and gets hit with a fresh wave of pain. she hisses again and her body contracts inward on itself, her hand pressing tighter against the ache. ]
no subject
he hears the sharp breath, the way her grip tightens on her side. as much as Matt had been fairly determined to wallow in his unhappiness, that his limited attempt to find some light in the dark had been dropped to the bottom of a lake, it seems pointless now. (maybe, he's more worried about her than he is about books that are already gone.) )
I might have stronger ones, if I find whoever did it. ( so many people hurt, and so many of their limited supplies lost. and for what? ) You don't have to sit out here in the dark. I'm fine, it's ... it's just a book.
( there's a hint in his voice, that he's not fine, that to him it was more than just the sum of its pages. it hurts to have something he was so hopeful for destroyed. even more than the fact it was a bible, to once again be stranded with nothing in this bleak place that he can read on his own is eternally frustrating. he's upset, but he knows pointlessly so. and it isn't Elektra's problem, either way. she doesn't need to linger in the wet and cold just because he is. )
