INTRO LOG: OCTOBER

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
DON'T STOP ME NOW

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: october 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. scavenger hunt prizes are awarded. the ferry capsizes in a blaze of glory.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for playing catch up! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

When the ferry docks, it seems as though you've been spared from any weirdness this month! It's good to have a break now and then, isn't it? And if you participated in the scavenger hunt, you're probably eagerly awaiting your promised prize—

But, ohp, what's that sound? Is that the ferry's engine firing up again? The ship roars to life again as some brave mutineers overthrow its autopilot system. Crowley and the Winter Soldier man the ferry's control room while Aziraphale flits between the cargo hold and the deck, attempting to assuage any accidental kidnapees with reassuring words and cake.

Unfortunately, the joyride is shortlived. Between the ferry's complex control panel and the haphazard attempts to override it, all the group manages to do is send the boat charging full speed ahead—which would be great if it wasn't facing the beach. The ferry jolts forward and careens smack into the dock, tearing down the entire structure and punching a sizeable hole in the ferry's hull.

Well, that could've gone better. But there's no time to dwell on the mistakes of the very recent past! The ferry is sinking, and quickly! Looks like you'll have to scramble if you want to save what's left in the cargo hold before the whole thing goes under... And that's gonna be awfully tricky without a dock.

Oh, and maybe save the new arrivals? Make sure they don't drown? But, then again, if they go down with the ship, they'll just show up again in the church... The same can't be said for the restock for the general store!

As smoke billows from the damaged ferry and the last the harbor disappears into the lake, the Lighthouse Keeper appears on the network with a pretty straightforward question. Also, the ferry's song changes, so. That happens.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.

And regarding the ferry disaster... Well, you have some options. Here's what you need to know:
  • This is a player plot organized by MJ, Xy, and Gail! A big thank-you to them for providing us with this intro log event!

  • Whether or not your character and any packages addressed to them are affected by this plot is up to you! If you would like to assume your character avoids dealing with this chaos and somehow grabs their delivery without issue, go right ahead!

  • Similarly, if you're looking for an opportunity to make your character's life harder, injury and death are always on the table! Or maybe it's your package that takes the abuse, lost forever to the lake's depths or washing up all waterlogged a week or two down the road. In short: How you engage with this plot is entirely up to you.

  • What happens to the ferry and the dock? Within a couple of hours, the ferry will sink completely, and anything on board when it goes down is lost forever. Which bodes super well for the ferry, huh? Sure hope the next batch of newcomers has some strong swimmers. Oh, and the dock is gone, too. If you want it back, you'll have to rebuild it.

  • As for Crowley, Aziraphale, Bucky, and anyone else on the ferry or dock during the collision... Hope you boys like concussions, bruised ribs, and a broken bone or two, because you've got 'em! The exact injuries are up to you, but they're the equivalent of a semi-serious car accident.

  • One last thing: The fate of the shop restocks, including all of the food for the month, depends on you! Let us know if your character will be participating in the rescue attempt. In exchange for letting us beat up your character, you can save a portion of the month's supplies! We'll let you all know on October 3 what the rations for the rest of the month will look like.

[Bruce hasn't seen his own package, but then, he hasn't looked very hard either. The rescue effort has been twofold and he's watching people linger on shore- those that haven't started making their way into town are like him. Looking out over the water. Trying to catch their breath. He feels very shaky from the exertion- his limbs feel heavy, his clothes are waterlogged. His hair is plastered to his scalp and he'd abandoned his shoes a long time ago.

He needs to make his way back too, there are plenty of supplies to take account of, it'll be the start of many trips. But as he stops before his first crate, his tablet responds. Bruce pauses, reaches for it, and then pauses again. His first thought is what is this? Before he realizes it isn't a what at all. It's a who.

Interesting.]

Oh.

That's very fortunate. And unexpected, if I'm honest.

I hope you weren't hurt in the process.

[ daylight looks down at himself for a split second, as if realising that oh yeah. is he fine? no missing parts when debris was floating about the water, right?

when he's sure everything of him is still there, day sends out a reply after some thoughtful consideration on what to say next. (mostly because he's unsure of how to word a request/question he has-) ]
I'm fine! It's just. Well.

Do you know how to turn whatever is in your mail off? Or at least quiet it down? It's really noisy and my audials are dying over here.

[ because ever since daylight came across the package and hoisted it out of the water, something inside the package has been going off and, man, it is going off hard.

it's how he even found it in the first place, honestly. after he was getting ready to go back to shore, day began hearing this racket nearby and. here he is. ]

[Oh.

The trouble is that this also presents a dilemma. Bruce has always been taught to be polite and it isn't a difficult habit to fall into, even here, even in this supposed afterlife. But it wars with the degree to which he values his privacy. This is the reason he's stolen and borrowed supplies from the store, instead of buying them outright, instead of risking that what he's using is noticed. It's a concern for the paranoid perhaps, but then it's also not unusual for Gotham- where information itself is currency. The scale tips back and forth.

Bruce looks at his tablet for only a moment longer, before tapping out his reply.]

Go ahead and open it. There should be a power switch on the control panel and that should stop the noise.

I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting it to arrive with batteries included.
sunborne: (093. - 🔥 - ARGUMENT.)

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-10-09 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[ daylight's immediate response is to write back a grateful thank you and tear open the package. he's eager to be rid of the really, really noisy whatever-the-heck-this-is that's causing his poor audials to ring out.

but he stops himself before he does that- he's not sure why but he does. after thinking about this for a few seconds - which is actually hard, with how the darn sound is determined to rattle his processors out - daylight comes to a conclusion and, first, sends a message instead: ]

I don't want to be rude and open your stuff though. It's your package! If anyone opens it then it should be you. Plus- There might be a chance I could break whatever this is and I definitely don't think you'll want that. You must have wanted this a lot to have Rastus for this.

Would you be cool with the idea of us meeting up somewhere?
[ preferably soon as possible...? ]
pearlstrings: ((via shithouse)) (ten)

daylight..... why are you so soft

[personal profile] pearlstrings 2019-10-09 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's the last thing he was expecting- not because Bruce assumes that all people are inherently self-serving, but because it's natural, he thinks. This is a pretty irritating inconvenience. If their positions were reversed Bruce knows himself well enough to recognize that it's unlikely that he would have asked permission first. He wouldn't have wanted the attention it would generate, and that's a far cry from a constant noise attached to his body.

Meeting in person is an inevitability and with it, unwrapping the package to power it off will have mostly the same conclusion. But he doesn't want to drag this out any longer. It's his responsibility.]

Of course. Where are you?

I'm on the trail headed towards the dock as we speak.
sunborne: (059. - 🔥 - TROUBLE.)

underneath all the hard protometal is a soft boy

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-10-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
[ !!!!

he needs a second to reread the message and, no, he is reading what he's reading. which is good because of what luck! daylight was planning to head up the trail to get back to beacon proper. he had been hoping to find something to deal with the water and grime now clogging up his seams and panels. but then the package and him crossed paths and he was reconsidering his options.

looks like he'll be going with that plan after all. he quickly sends back a message: ]

How about I meet you halfway then? I can start now and you're definitely not going to be able to miss me or the item.

Oh! And I'm Daylight by the way. :D It's nice to meet you.
[ he wishes this had been better circumstances but nothing like a commotion to throw people together. day is happy he can help someone out, at the very least. especially in getting their items back to them, since he currently knows the feeling of wondering whether your stuff or not survived. ]
pearlstrings: ((via shithouse)) (ten)

its not very far underneath if we're being honest

[personal profile] pearlstrings 2019-10-16 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce.

I'm sure I'll hear you coming.

[If nothing else there's a comfort to be found in that. Bruce has made two trips back and forth from the shores already, with several more to go for all of the crates that have managed to be salvaged. But the picture that had come along offered reassurance of a different kind- Daylight doesn't seem like someone he could accidentally miss. Even if he wasn't wearing a kind of homing device.

Besides, maybe in passing there will be less of a crowd- fewer curious eyes.

And true to form Bruce does hear him before he sees him. An unfortunate, unending beeping sound gradually making its way up the slope.]
sunborne: (168. - 🔥 - AGREEMENT.)

it's said that if you poke daylight hard enough, you'll get a squeaky toy sound in response

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-10-21 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ daylight can definitely be heard coming- there's something dreadful in the way that irritating beeeeeep is, at first, quiet and subdued but gets worse and worse as the two get closer to the other.

by the time daylight and within proper view, the beep almost sounds like the pained scream of some dying automaton trying to make its feelings known. how is daylight still so obviously cheerful even with that blasted racket right next to his poor audial? how? (well- he does look pained but he does his best to not look annoyed or anything.) ]

Hey there! I'm Daylight. You can call me 'Day' if you want.

[ wait- did he say that? he might have said that already but his poor processors are being scrambled by the noise. ]

Um- Hi, again. You must be- [ daylight winces when the thingamajig reaches a particularly obnoxious beep! just as he holds it up next to his helm for a better view.

but he tries his best to soldier on, speaking over the loud racket as he kneels down to hand the package over: ]
You must be Bruce! It's nice to meet you. This is yours, right?
pearlstrings: ((via shithouse)) (four)

[personal profile] pearlstrings 2019-10-24 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[The picture he'd been sent before suggested a certain... size, but there really is no comparison once they're face to face. He's incredibly tall. And metallic. It's fascinating to behold but Bruce had been taught from a young age to, if nothing else, be polite. Perhaps Alfred would be proud, he doesn't stare.

It does make an unfortunately comical picture. Daylight towers over him and Bruce's package, still wrapped, continues to scream. It undoes every attempt he could make at discretion.]

I am. Thank you. For bringing this all the way here.

[He doesn't know where the batteries will be located, but he suspects that it's safe to assume it will be on the main console. Bruce takes the package and for the distance between them the whine shifts down half an octave. It is one of the last things he wants to do, but the situation necessitates it. Bruce begins to peel back the wrapping until the screen of the metal detector appears, a small light flashing back at him. Despite his unfamiliarity with it, Bruce takes only a few moments to find the plate underneath and work it loose, pulling a single battery out and thus plunging them both in to well deserved silence.

His ears are still ringing.]

That must have been very irritating.
sunborne: (124. - 🔥 - CHATTY.)

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-10-25 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the lack of staring certainly helps put day at ease. it's been- nice, the not staring and the not reactions other have been having to his presence whenever a new group shows up. it helps him not feel as gangly or hyperaware of how much space he takes. (though he is a bit more aware of his size now, realising that he's meeting up with someone- maybe his age? younger? it's been forever since he's been around humans proper. ages are hard for him to pin down.)

but back on topic: at bruce's words, daylight smiles in thanks and is quick in letting out an audible sigh of relief when the noise finally dies and the two are granted some semblance of peace and quiet. he makes a show of rubbing the side of his helm, laughing a bit as he shakes his helm to show that it's alright. ]

It was- [ hmmm- how to word this without sounding weird? ] It was, like, an interesting experience. Definitely going to avoid getting myself whatever that is if that's part of its parcel.

But hey! It let me find it before it ended up sinking to the bottom of the lake. So I can't be mad at it for that. You have your stuff now and that's what's important, you know? [ ever the one to look at the bright side of things.

and, every the friendly one daylight feels like he needs to apologise for something: ]
Um- Sorry if you had some more items, though. I was heading back to the shore when I heard that and, well, I had other things with me that I couldn't let go to try and investigate further.
pearlstrings: ((via shithouse)) (fortyone)

[personal profile] pearlstrings 2019-10-30 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
[That's certainly an optimistic way to look at it- which isn't to say that Bruce takes issue with optimism for what it is, but there are few citizens of Gotham that can afford to possess it at all. It's refreshing, perhaps especially for it's rarity. Bruce wonders if it's part of his nature- if he's a robot, if it's programmed. Or if it's owed to age and experience. It's entirely possible that he isn't a robot at all, but that seems like a terribly rude thing to slip into a conversation, especially when they've only just met. Alfred always spoke very highly about the importance of first impressions.]

The apology isn't necessary. [He could say it lightly, it could sound like a casual dismissal or a brush off. But it doesn't. Like everything else Bruce does, he chooses his words carefully and pitches his voice with equal consideration.] You've done more that enough.

Besides, there were far more important things to try and salvage.

It was a very kind gesture- I'm just not sure how to thank you.
