That One With the Meeting [OPEN]

characters: Cao Pi and OPEN!!!
location: the town hall
date/time: appx moonrise Sept. 2, for a couple of hours
content: Cao Pi proposed a meeting for everyone to talk about what ideas they have for organizing, protecting the town, and safely exploring their confines. This is that meeting. Newcomers are welcome as well! Assume characters have heard about it through the grapevine, but especially on Sept. 1 as Cao Pi makes the rounds and tells people this is happening. He will have a moment to orate but after that the floor is open, threadjacking is encouraged, and whatever comes of this is a complete free-for-all!
warnings: probably some discussion of character death. lmk if I need to edit this.

Despite the fact that Will Ingram's messages providing further information were yet to come, Cao Pi had made a public promise and he would hold himself to it, carrying out his meeting as described. At moonrise on the 2nd, he is already present in the town hall, hoping to see not just those who told him they would be there, but also some of the unfortunate newcomers freshly thrown into this situation. He had done his best to prowl around the Invincible and the bonfire, mentioning that the meeting would happen, but he still had to rely on word of mouth to do its work.

When he decides there are enough people present to begin, the Lord of Wei steps up before the assembly, clearing his throat importantly. "For better or worse," he begins, "we are a community. A town, if we are not a country. The hints and cryptic comments from the Lighthouse Keeper have suggested that we have a job to do, but we're still waiting on information as to what it is and why - why us, why the dead stolen from their worlds or their respective afterlives. But the recent mission to connect the Keeper to the network our tablets can access has shown a number of weaknesses that may hamper our ability to do any job, let alone the one which will keep us all from being permanently obliterated." Is that harsh? Too bad. He doesn't care. "We know a few things for certain. One, that we must carry out the purpose which the Keeper understands and encourages. Two, if we fail in any way, she will kill us all by ordering the spirits to destroy us. Three, the spirits deep in the forest are not just her weapon against us, but they have their own will and may attack or destroy anyone who simply wanders out too far. Our explorations have uncovered a number of things but not everything, by far. If you are new or simply haven't kept up on the recent developments, the record is here." He holds out a hand to the logbooks kept there in the town hall.

"I've asked you here to discuss the issues facing us in Beacon, and to offer up any ideas for how to solve those issues. There are quite a few of them, some that even I, perhaps, haven't considered yet. Please be orderly and take your turns, but I should like to hear from everyone. Whether you have questions, or have an idea you wish to share, please. Speak up. We will all be better for the sharing of ideas and discussion of pros and cons, rather than just waiting and hoping that someone will take charge and give us orders."

With that, he steps aside, inviting anyone and everyone to come up and speak. Or simply rise from their seat and speak. The floor is open, Beacon, use it to say things that you might not want anyone connected to the network to overhear. Sass the Keeper, gush about the Postmaster, whatever you want. Hopefully by the end of it all, someone might have some plans that can be brought about. For his part, Cao Pi is not putting himself up as any sort of authority or the one actually in charge, he literally is only there as organizer and moderator and nothing else. At least, so his cool half-smirk and perfect manners would suggest...

Not until the meeting is over.

( Despite not having any children of his, Javert does the dad voice pretty well. No dessert until you eat your vegetables. Once he's done speaking, he goes over to where Mary is seated and takes the spot next to her. )

May I have a look at that? ( He asks, pointing to her sketchpad. ) I'm pleased you're taking this so seriously, Mary.

Of course!

[She hands him her sign-up sheet and the progress that's been made so far. She can't help but be proud that other people are contributing, and didn't make her feel as if she was just being silly. Mary's handwriting, unfortunately, isn't the best, but it's the thought that counts, right?]

I want to help make the town a better and safer place for everyone.

[ don't hold back, jason! let's have some fun!!

at the mention of the lanterns, kol doesn't look amused. why can't he just smash his? it's just unnecessary baggage! and yes — he knows that it's his life source, yada yada yada. still! why couldn't it be a necklace or watch?

despite his lack of love for the lanterns, he does feel pleased that his idea of training outside of the gym has been met with approval. ]

Kol. [ he gives javert a tiny little nod, still somewhat respectable to someone in a higher position than him despite spending his life acting like he doesn't know what that word means. ] I think we should be trying to train and manoeuvre around this place in as many different ways as possible. Blind, in a rush, in large groups...

[ mention capture the flag. ]

[ At Mary's approach, Scarlett has to work to keep the smile from pulling wide at her lips, the infinitesimal twitch of her lips at least enough to suggest that she's not sorry for the company. At least not when it's in the form of Mary.
Despite her attempt to follow what's being discussed, her gaze does drift down to the little girl beside her. A real smile touching her lips now as she can see the way Mary is mirroring her own stance. Dress her in black and strap a couple of bowie knives to her back, and she really would be a miniature version of Scarlett. ]

I'm thinking... that it's interesting to see who wants to help versus who wants to be in charge. [ Honest? Yep. Probably a bit much for a child Mary's age to understand? No doubt, but Scarlett made a point of not lying, regardless of age.

She crouches down to be more on Mary's level, her elbows resting on her knees as from this far back, she can still see everyone clearly. ]

Have you ever met the one who called the meeting?

[Snorting back a laugh, Quentin nods and takes a quick look around the room. There's a lot of lanterns here, enough for it to be possible to take pictures at least.]

Someone should have taken names at the door. Pictures. I mean, we can't exactly trust that people are who they say they are? But. It's a start?

[Someone should have catalogued them as they got off the ferry, before everyone got their barrings and scattered all over. Sure, it's a small town and there's probably not that many places to hide, but still-- no one seems to know anything. There's no pooled knowledge, no research team. Just a few people trying to get in to a pissing contest about who should rule, when it's so very obvious it should be Eliot.]

Are you new here, too?

[ She'd been content to keep her acknowledgment of his presence to herself until now. Watching his approach from her periphery. The flask he pulled from his pocket that she's almost certain he hadn't gotten here. It told her at least enough about him not to be patting the handle of the knife at her side, instead, keeping her gaze on the front of the room as she watches the proceedings with her arms folded across her chest.

Until he speaks, that is.

Her head turns with slow, deliberation. Her eyebrow popped as those words spin over in her head and after a long moment that she spends scrutinizing his appearance, a dry huff of what might have been a chuckle spills past her lips. ]

Haven't had much occasion to find out. [ Not really what he was leading to, she knows, but she figures it's an answer that will distract him from what she's doing here for now. ]

If I may, sir, I think we should look into it anyway. You saw what happened with the rats, how destructive they are. We cannot always rely on the ferry shipments for our supplies.

( He says this with as much respect as possible. Cao Pi is a king, after all, and Javert has always been more than hesitant to go against authority. )

You said earlier you have military experience. Does that mean you fought in battles?

If that is your wish.

( This is probably the best idea, what with them still recovering from their wounds and all but. Javert doesn't care. He can be gentle, and he wants something to do. It's fine. )

I shudder to think who you may use such attacks against, Madame Lutece.

( Let's be honest, they'd probably deserve it. Javert's not worried about it, he's just giving her shit. )

There are not. You will have to procure one for yourself from Monsieur Rastus.

( Or Javert will. He's already planning on asking for as many weapons as he can. We'll see how that goes. He makes small, considering noise at the other man's preference, arms still folded across his chest. )

You may not have much of a choice, when you're put in a fight. What will you do if your opponent disarms you?

[ Clarke seeks him out later, as the conversation is dwindling a bit all around them: ]

I'm not musically inclined, I'm afraid, but I'm really interested in this ability to communicate with the spirits. If I had a question for one of them, what would I need to know how to do, to ask it? Would I be able to ask them a single word, like "where"?

[ clarke's eyes widen a bit at his answer. ] Thirty years worth of experience is more than most of us have, I'd imagine.

[ then the corners of her lips curve up again, at his praise. ] I didn't do as well as I probably could have. It's harder to shoot under pressure. But I've had some practice with it, where I came from. [ it's a long story, and will probably sound far-fetched to someone like him, but since they appear to have all the time in the world: ] I was part of a re-colonization effort, on a post-apocalyptic Earth. We all had to become proficient with weaponry, to deal with the survivors we found.

[ see? she's not the only one who thinks it's a good idea. ] I'd offer to take better photos than the tablet and with a flash but my phone has finally died a peaceful death a few days ago.

[ davina obviously didn't think of charging the damn thing before dying a horrible death. who knew she'd be dragged here anyway instead of the usual creepy town with dead people, right? she at least recognises a few individuals, including the guy who started this all, which means she knows who she can hold accountable for if nothing comes out of this. but he does have a point taking names and pictures.

there's honestly just so much talking and nothing getting written down. she briefly turns away from the crowd to smile at him.
] Just a month older than the newcomers. [ in beacon speak, after all the chaos a few weeks ago, that's probably old already. ] Did you recently arrive with the ferry?

A lot of us are working with things that aren't our specialties, it's all right. For all the sailing I've done, it's not like I've ever built a boat before, but I'm learning. You'll do all right.

[This poor guy needs a confidence boost, doesn't he? It's become pretty obvious. Who knows what he went through in life, or if it's just how he is naturally, but maybe he'll find his footing in time. Hopefully so, anyway.]

"That..." he starts. "That's awful. Do we not know any more about these creatures? I seek to understand them better," he says. "I don't believe they were reset, no? So they must have a wealth of knowledge beyond our stay, and so far we only have the knowledge of Robin, who is less than forthcoming, and Dr. Ingram, who has confessed to only have been here shortly before a reset."

He supposes they could also ask the buildings themselves, if anyone had that sort of power. He had noticed that people had all sorts of strange and sundry powers that he would never have thought up before.

Ah yes, I was going to speak to him next. He's very friendly, but he does like to eat. If you have any suggestions, perhaps we could bring him some snacks and ask him a few questions!

[ Later, Aziraphale will find out the Librarian's name, and how to say "cookie." ]

Oh, I'm afraid I haven't got a clue yet. I don't know if they have those types of words in their language, but I imagine so. I haven't learned a language yet without a way to ask a question, or without words to denote space and time.

But nouns and other easily demonstrative things, I think, are the easiest things to learn.

It doesn't help that they're not the chattiest bunch.

Anyway, I suppose we'll have to find out.

Oh, hey, glad you worked yourself to the conclusion I was pointing to... newbie. [ well actually he had another title in mind but starting a fight in the middle of a meeting-- even he could see how that would be gauche. ] Hopefully, you've got the skills to back up that talk, 'cause it'd be a shame if you ended up in the ever growing number of people killed.

[ he glances at Cao Pi, at least calm enough after their first conversation. Jason thinks most of the people stuck there are some level of useless, but... he at least seemed to catch on pretty quickly. And to have a healthy amount of skepticism. But, he asked a reasonable question. ]

You don't need a leader for that. You just need a system. We just watched our asses get pretty thoroughly kicked-- it'd be bad to have that happen again, and lose whoever decided to take that on.

It'd be better to have a system.

And we have half of one with the notes in the library.

Yeah? Just stepped off, uhm, yesterday?

[Yesterday, or the day before? Time worked strangely when there's no sun to keep the nights from bleeding in to the days and he's mostly just eating every few hours and sleeping when he's so tired he can't keep his eyes open anymore, because they feel gritty and aching.

But his head flies up at that, a phone?]
Before it died? Did it work? Could you, like, call people? Not-here people? [But also--] Wait, so-- uhm you've been here a month and there's no organization? No leadership and no-one-- does anyone know what we're even doing here?
