That One With the Meeting [OPEN]

characters: Cao Pi and OPEN!!!
location: the town hall
date/time: appx moonrise Sept. 2, for a couple of hours
content: Cao Pi proposed a meeting for everyone to talk about what ideas they have for organizing, protecting the town, and safely exploring their confines. This is that meeting. Newcomers are welcome as well! Assume characters have heard about it through the grapevine, but especially on Sept. 1 as Cao Pi makes the rounds and tells people this is happening. He will have a moment to orate but after that the floor is open, threadjacking is encouraged, and whatever comes of this is a complete free-for-all!
warnings: probably some discussion of character death. lmk if I need to edit this.

Despite the fact that Will Ingram's messages providing further information were yet to come, Cao Pi had made a public promise and he would hold himself to it, carrying out his meeting as described. At moonrise on the 2nd, he is already present in the town hall, hoping to see not just those who told him they would be there, but also some of the unfortunate newcomers freshly thrown into this situation. He had done his best to prowl around the Invincible and the bonfire, mentioning that the meeting would happen, but he still had to rely on word of mouth to do its work.

When he decides there are enough people present to begin, the Lord of Wei steps up before the assembly, clearing his throat importantly. "For better or worse," he begins, "we are a community. A town, if we are not a country. The hints and cryptic comments from the Lighthouse Keeper have suggested that we have a job to do, but we're still waiting on information as to what it is and why - why us, why the dead stolen from their worlds or their respective afterlives. But the recent mission to connect the Keeper to the network our tablets can access has shown a number of weaknesses that may hamper our ability to do any job, let alone the one which will keep us all from being permanently obliterated." Is that harsh? Too bad. He doesn't care. "We know a few things for certain. One, that we must carry out the purpose which the Keeper understands and encourages. Two, if we fail in any way, she will kill us all by ordering the spirits to destroy us. Three, the spirits deep in the forest are not just her weapon against us, but they have their own will and may attack or destroy anyone who simply wanders out too far. Our explorations have uncovered a number of things but not everything, by far. If you are new or simply haven't kept up on the recent developments, the record is here." He holds out a hand to the logbooks kept there in the town hall.

"I've asked you here to discuss the issues facing us in Beacon, and to offer up any ideas for how to solve those issues. There are quite a few of them, some that even I, perhaps, haven't considered yet. Please be orderly and take your turns, but I should like to hear from everyone. Whether you have questions, or have an idea you wish to share, please. Speak up. We will all be better for the sharing of ideas and discussion of pros and cons, rather than just waiting and hoping that someone will take charge and give us orders."

With that, he steps aside, inviting anyone and everyone to come up and speak. Or simply rise from their seat and speak. The floor is open, Beacon, use it to say things that you might not want anyone connected to the network to overhear. Sass the Keeper, gush about the Postmaster, whatever you want. Hopefully by the end of it all, someone might have some plans that can be brought about. For his part, Cao Pi is not putting himself up as any sort of authority or the one actually in charge, he literally is only there as organizer and moderator and nothing else. At least, so his cool half-smirk and perfect manners would suggest...

For even as tall as she makes herself, Eliot can't quite help the height he carries naturally at six feet and two inches. He kneels to better see the chart, smiling fondly to himself at her staunch excitement.

"A welcoming committee is a lovely idea. I don't think I would have been as confused if someone helped me when I got here."

He looks over the crayons. "Wow, you certainly have quite a collection! I have so many favorites to choose from here!" After some thought he plucks up a royal blue. "I'll use this one first." And he adds a mark: one more 'want' for the welcoming committee.

It's not-- it isn't that simple. It takes an enormous amount of cleverness and power to open a doorway, they don't like to be open. It's-- it's like trying to pry a wall in two. They're not meant to be breached, never mind for how long we'd need to successfully transport everyone to all their individual worlds.

Fourteen years. Before that, I was fifteen years a prison guard.

( He's pleased to see her, too. He may not have had much of a chance to see her in action, fighting against the spirits, but the fact that she chose to stay behind to help? That earns his respect. His expression softens and he nods. )

What about you? How did you learn to shoot so well?
sauntered_downward: (hmmm?)

[personal profile] sauntered_downward 2019-09-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever seen a one-way door? You can just push it back with enough force and it goes back the other way. Or you jam it open and push your way back. That's what we do here.
sauntered_downward: (oh really now)

[personal profile] sauntered_downward 2019-09-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
[A pause.]

We don't have to transport everyone.

Hark at the words from the demon who wanted to ensure his world was visited.

[But she doesn't sound as unimpressed as she had before. Maybe even amused, quietly, because he's starting to sound like her: selfish.]

I'm more, um, familiar with houses, but...

[Carpentry is carpentry, right?]

Since there's a, um, library, I can see what I can find on different structures to be able to draw up better drafts.

[He stares pretty staunchly at his feet as he talks.]
sauntered_downward: (you don't say)

[personal profile] sauntered_downward 2019-09-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs, but he's got a little smirk on his face.

Aziraphale would kill him if he heard talk like this.]

I just want to get back to my world. I've got a lot riding on it.

That's a good place to start. Better off than most of us. I don't know the first thing about building boats, but I've been swinging a hatchet and hammering nails anyway, so you're already ahead of me.

[To which he smiles, with a shrug.]

But if you'd rather, a lot of the buildings around here could use some work. Or better defenses, if you have any ideas for that.
originallutece: would be what they'd call this emotion if i was 12 (happy; delightfully impudent)

[And Robert would kill her, but then again, he isn't here, is he?]

Oh, yes. All your stuff.

And what if someone comes to me with a sob story? What if someone else has something riding on it? What do you propose I do then, hm?
sauntered_downward: (hmmm?)

[personal profile] sauntered_downward 2019-09-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Crowley's shrug is completely non-committal.]

That all depends on you, doesn't it?

But I don't think you're the kind to listen to just any sob-story are you?
itselbitch: (never bet on me)

[ ah. it's jarring seeing javert there, a real person claiming to be who he is, and eliot has to pause to make sure he's hearing and seeing right. but even jarring, eliot knows better than to say anything. he ruled a kingdom that was described in fictional children's books, after all; there are just some moral lines that one should never cross.

the fact piques a different curiosity, actually. because eliot knows that fiction is fiction, and that's not the same as the real thing. he knows the musical back and forth, having been cast as valjean in high school. he's read the book more times than he can count. he even tries to forget how margo used that against him to cast music magic that helped everyone in the kingdom prepare him for an untimely duel.

but none of those actually share who this real person is, in front of him, especially with the very real questions he has that he doesn't know the answers to. ]

What kind of training do you have? If you're an inspector, wouldn't your talents better serve explorations?

I'll take a look.

[He scratches the back of his head, and...is he curling in on himself even more? It's like being told nice things about his apparent abilities and willingness to provide is making him feel just as embarrassed as if he was told he should keep his mouth shut. Yeesh, he's gonna need some work.]

I mean, I'm sure once I get a better idea of the structure of the houses I'll be able to, um, draw some ideas out. I also, um, I mean, someone else can probably do better, but I can think of some spirit wards...
itselbitch: (just. why.)

[personal profile] itselbitch 2019-09-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ wait. wait, that's it? uh...?? that's all he's going to say? ]

What kinds of things? Small things? Big things? Paper? Wood? Metal?

[A little smile slips over her face, there and gone.]

Then let me clarify: why should I listen to yours? What do I care if your world is destroyed?

[Follow up questions? Why? Why??? Please, fine gentleman, have mercy.]

Wood, generally...I'm a woodworker. I, erm...

[His level of fidgeting begins to increase, and he's very certainly not making eye contact.]

Mostly make things on a smaller scale. Not, like, I mean, not miniature, but...anyway I can adjust as I need to. I've been researching architecture.

Aziraphale actually claps for this speech. "Well said, Cao Pi, King of the Wei." It's been a long time since he's heard that kind of introduction, though, so he wonders where Cao Pi is from. "Yes, I think - the less deaths we have, the better. Though, if I may ask, what do you mean resurrection?"

Yes, he's new around here.

[ oh. a woodworker. eliot fights the urge to make an inappropriate joke. ]

So like. Bookshelves? Fences? That kind of thing?

Would you be able to construct tools? For maybe a garden.

[They're in the middle of a meeting, which she's conscious of. Their conversation is ostensibly private, but people always listen in.]

That isn't much of a temptation.

[But it's certainly a start. Power is always interesting, especially for her, especially now.]

Why don't we resume this conversation after this little meeting?

Hello, everyone.

[ He stands up to talk when somehow there's a bit of a quiet moment. ]

My name is Aziraphale, and I am new around here, I suppose. I just have a very quick suggestion, and if anyone who is musically inclined would like to assist, it would be appreciated.

We have been given sheet music in order to communicate with the spirits, in short form. They're very basic things, hardly give us any insight into their language, but they must have a common one. If we could, I'd like to see if maybe we can learn it. Surely, they have been here longer than us, and may have important things to say that we just don't understand.

Thank you.

[ And then he sits back down. ]

He looks very concerned about that, and prods for more information: "What was the mission for? And where were they last seen? I imagine with such a large group like that, it would be quite difficult to lose all of them."

And, very quietly, he asks: "And what do the ones who have returned have to say about it all?"
