Neither, I believe. It was simply...showing what was. But, that is my assumption only, since we still can't communicate with them directly. I don't know what would benefit them if they were able to convince us of anything - as, like you say, they experiment on us in turn.
It doesn't make much sense, but I think it important right now to know what was done, to whom and by whom, so we can assess later.
