INTRO LOG: AUGUST

INTRO LOG: AUGUST
DARK, DARK, DARK

characters: everyone.
location: all over beacon!
date/time: the first part of august.
content: a few new faces, the teleporter is up to old tricks, and overall just loving not being trapped in an underwater science station right about now.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

The first thing you're aware of as you come to is the glow of a lantern, just within reach. Hazily, you start to recall the events leading up to your arrival. You died, somehow, but how does that equate to you being wherever you are?

The second thing you're aware of is that you're being handed a slice of cherry pie by a six-limbed masked creature with a hairnet. Looking around, you find yourself inside a school cafeteria. The school looks to be in decent condition, despite being dark and clearly abandoned - except by whatever this creature is. Stick around long enough and they will also serve some chicken nuggets and a box of milk. Wander a bit, and you may find a memorial wall for dozens of unfamiliar names and faces. Where is this?

A few answers can be found if you pick up and look through the tablet that's settled right beside the lantern. Some of the information is a little out of date at this point, but the most important details are still there: yes, you're really dead, keep your lantern close, and watch out for the spirits. You might notice mention of a ferry, but that's odd, especially if you're nowhere near the lake...

Leaving where you are and using the provided map on the tablet will help you find your way to town, and along the way you might find some out of place items, like crates of food or toiletries or clothing. Feel free to grab what you find as you make your way there, your new neighbors are sure to appreciate it.

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for getting acquainted with their new situation! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. It's still a little messed up (maybe someone might want to record a new message?), it has plenty of important information to share. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records that were thankfully saved from the bad storm a few months ago. If that's not enough, there's many long-time residents of Beacon that will be happy to share how things go around here. If not in person, network works too.

hide and seek.

The teleporter repair team has been hard at work, and their hard work has paid off. Items have arrived in Beacon aplenty! Only, the aiming protocol is still a little off and it's still all over. Whoops. While anyone with a specific request will find a spirit guide to help them find their wares, everything and anything else is fair game for a little fun.

The spirits are in a playful mood, and have taken the liberty of locating all these lost sundries and supplies. And of course, after that, they chose to hide them around town. Spirits vary from great at hiding things (lining a hollowed out trunk with swim trunks) to downright terrible (is it really "hiding" that sheet of plywood when you put it behind a streetlight that is smaller than it is?), though they seem to enjoy the experience either way.

Need something in particular and don't know where to start? Don't worry, spirits will be happy to give hints. If you can understand their esoteric forms of communication, that is. Others give away the game in the fact they hide with the items themselves, and find the prank so hilarious that little snuffles and giggles are an easy clue to the stowed stash. If characters play along long enough, the spirits will give up the game and will show the poor things with no seeking skills what they've hidden. Still, why not have a little fun with it? The spirits sure are!

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to The Next Night! We're so glad to have you with us, both new and old. For a run-down on what's upcoming in August, please see the August gameplan, or check the calendar for a quick overview!

As a reminder, things like newcomer arrivals, item deliveries, and lantern repair all depend on the help of the characters in the game! If your character would be interested in assisting with the equipment at Dr. Solis' Lab in any way, please let us know!

DELIVERIES

The newly ported in items have arrived, but as in July, they're still kind of everywhere. Learning to use this portal technology is hard, and more hands helping out are always appreciated! As mentioned above, the spirits will readily help find people's personal requests, but the general resupplies? Guess you'd better be willing to play the spirits' latest little game. The following can be found, one way or another:

  • The monthly store restock, which provides enough food, general sundry items, and basic supplies to comfortably last the group a month. You can check what kind of items to expect in a monthly restock here.

  • For Elektra Natchios: several slightly oversized t-shirts and sweatpants made of comfortable materials, a bottle of black nail polish (chip resistant), a bottle of whiskey with a slight odor of sewer when the bottle is opened (though it tastes fine), and a teddy bear.

  • For Rosinante Donquixote: 4 boxes each (25 rounds per box) of shotgun and flintlock pistol ammo, except in every box two of the rounds have been replaced with nerf darts that some poor kids probably lost long ago.

  • For Fitz Kreiner: A limited set of lockpicking tools and a set of locks to practice on, and some paper umbrellas which may require some disassembly before they can be used.

  • For Matt Murdock: an assortment of 14 lovely rings (not all pictured here) as well as 6 rings to share with his friends!

If you submitted an item request last month and we've missed it here, let us know!

"Birds, probably," Soldat offers, smiling some at her expression. Cute. "I don't know why it only applies to feathers and not hair or clothes. Probably to tell them apart, since they're structurally different. There are lots of words for things in Earth languages. There's probably lots of words for things in your language that we don't have. Since your world has different things that are important, yeah?"
worthallthis: (frowny face)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-08-26 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Klaes Ashford might. Will Ingram and Ephraim will not. They don't like people.

[Soldat tries to think of anyone else who is even out there, still, and comes up blank, shaking their head.]

Some of us who don't live there might be able to help, though. Inspector Javert does a lot of building projects. I help some, too. You'd really be safer at either the inn here or the Landmark over in downtown, though, honestly.

[They sound about as earnest and concerned as their voice ever really gets.]

[aww such modesty.]

Lady is a title of respect where I come from, but if...'Miss?'...is more correct, I will use it. [mostly. he may slip out of instinct but really, it's not the worst thing he could call another person] Yes, I would thus like to review it to make sure we didn't forget anything of dire importance. I remember most of what we had to share with one another while still down there, though it seemed like a lot at the time. Some is a little less relevant now that our battle is over.

"Birds," she repeats, attempting to fix the word in her memory. "I believe you share truth, Soldat. At any rate, a word for a physical object or sister is easily learned. A word for a concept is trickier."

So the wisest approach is to either keep your distance from them or, preferably, fight with a companion or group.

[ she'll probably have to do the former for now. strength was never a thing she had in spades. that's what regis or the other galateions handled during missions. (dust and rust, she wasn't even supposed to be near enemies. she was supposed to be out of there reach but being dead-

hm. she'll focus on that later.)

lorem looks towards the direction of the lake that she had seen on the map, frowning thoughtfully. ]
... Helix Station isn't easily accessible, is it? It wasn't available on the map when I was going through my tablet.

[ maybe she's mistaken, however. there's a chance she could have easily missed its symbol while memorising the other landmarks that dotted beacon. ]

"And some concepts that seem to translate might not be translating as well as you think, too," Soldat suggests with sympathy. "Languages are crazy sometimes." Says the guy who speaks a couple dozen of them. "I like the way you speak, though. It's nice. Not just the way it translates, but how it. Sounds. Through the translation."

Look, if Soldat focuses, they can pretty much tell what language most people are using through the translation magic, or whatever it is going on here. Usually they use it to match languages as best they can, but they don't know hers. And it's pretty.

I'd prioritize keeping your distance, but yeah.

[It's not like they get a choice sometimes, so the buddy system is the way to go. With multiple buddies. And sometimes even then... But there's only so much they can do.

He follows her glance toward the lake.]

There's a submarine we can use to get down there. It's probably recharged by now from the last trip. I'd ask Weaver - we can control it sort of from the lab, but it's probably easier just to go through her. She's really helpful, by the way. Dunno if you've talked to her yet.

"I think your language has more in common with the Valan tongue than it does Sharer," Merwen says. "I know Valans have trouble with our sharing verbs. Valans divide 'learnshare' into 'teach' and 'learn,' and 'share speech' into 'talk' and 'listen.' It took me some time to understand the difference, when I learned Valan."

She offers him a small smile. "I am a wordweaver, though, and it is good to know that even translated, I hold some strength in my words."

( Javert doesn't say anything. Her words don't seem to have calmed him any, and he looks away from her with his expression shamed and full of doubt. It's been over a year since he became a new man, one that is now capable of compassion, but it is still difficult. He takes a breath, then says, )

Why do you care about them so? You hardly know them.
theimpatientone: (saddened)

[personal profile] theimpatientone 2020-08-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Her voice is softer, now.]

There is no action without an equal reaction in return. This is true in all things. To harm a soul, one that thinks as I do, is to harm myself. I admit I know very little of the spirits, but I would not be surprised to learn that they do not wish to die.

And how will we know that it will not come through the portal again? It is better that we put an end to it.

( He stabs at a few pieces of his noodles with his fork, shoving them into his mouth. He's already had this discussion with Rosinante before, and he has not changed his opinions. )

But enough of that. I do not wish to think of them. What of you? Are you faring better?

( He hasn't had much of a chance to check on him since the world eater fight. It's crossed his mind a few times, but he's never been in a right-minded state to do anything about it. )

( Javert seems awestruck by this, looking back up to her with wide eyes before glancing away. There's a humbleness to his posture now, as there often is in the face of someone so compassionate and good, and he admits a little more freely, )

Such compassion is beyond my understanding. You are right that goodness breeds kindness, but it makes very little sense to me.

It is not so outlandish.

[She shakes her head dismissively, uncomfortable with the idea that this is something remarkable.]

All things are connected, and all things have their place and purpose in the world. Nothing can be removed from that web, and I have seen what happens when someone tries. We do not exist alone.

It is not for nothing that my people call themselves Sharers.

[ her smiles turns a touch melancholic when hearing how there was a lot to overcome. she had a feeling that was the case when exploring the village, going over messages before and after the flood's wake. she wonders if that's how her friends felt and had to deal with in the aftermath of their home being-

hm. being dead is making her a bit more sentimental than she was prepared to be. shaking her head, trying to gather herself, lorem does her best to sound both confident and hopeful, ]
I'll do what I can to help then. Looks like there's a lot for me to do outside of my plans when I can get around them.

Would Sir Cao Pi be open to me privately speaking to- [ hm. she's going to take a gamble here. ] -him? Over some things? I'd hate to bother someone who has their hands full in light of recent events.
clarius: (162. ❀ SARABANDE.)

yessssss.

[ when they begin to make their way to the town, lorem goes on to explain what she's learned- most of it comes from the tablet. the connection her lantern has with her 'life' here in beacon. the spirits' general attitudes and the fact there's possibly a way to communicate with them. some of the events that had occurred in the past, mainly the mass kidnapping-slash-rescue in the hospital and, of course, the flood. locations that are shown on the map.

lorem seems to have a general idea of things happening here. she's uncertain on specific details like names and events from the very beginning - but, over-all, she's doing her best to play catch-up.

one of the biggest takeaways is that she's both intrigued and perplexed by the spirits they pass by on the way to town. not with how she sometimes looks at them with interest if a spirit or two cross their paths. (their spirit 'friend' continues to follow them from a distance but they keep said distance. little miracles?) ]

... I think that's all of it. [ she purses her lips, going through her thoughts one more time to be sure. ] Yes. That's all of it. Not a lot, I know, but better than nothing? I'm now trying to go through the archived messages to get a better feel of, well, you and the others here. How things are done and what's been done in the past.

[ she smiles, looking embarrassed. ] I apologise if that was strange to hear. Being so out of my depth leaves me quite flustered.

I haven't. [ she smiles ruefully, touching her neck in a show of embarrassment. ] I think you're the first person I've gotten a chance to have a proper conversation with. Besides the, ah, spirits- [ dust and rust, that's going to keep tripping her up. ] -I haven't gotten to meet the others proper. The school wasn't a bustling place.

[ very generous with the food, however. ]

Do you think Weaver will be open to me speaking with her soon? I'm assuming she must be some sort of engineer and I am feeling pressed to find someone like that here.

It's wistful, and a little bittersweet, to speak of someone's home. Of family. In Beacon, those connections are long gone, and despite the reason all of them were here... it's hard not to yearn for the people left behind. Matt huffs a good-natured laugh at She Who Spits Up Her Food. Well, that's a straight to the point name for a baby, isn't it? Unless the girl is grown, and then... well, she's for sure a picky eater. "Sounds like quite the family. You must be very proud."

He never managed to have children, himself. Matthew supposes that's for the best, and yet he finds the fact a little sad at the same time. At least it gives him less to mourn upon finding himself here. He doesn't envy Merwen the fact she has an entire family to mourn.

As for the meaning of his name, it's much less a story. "I was named after the disciple. It means gift of god." It was a very catholic name, though perhaps not as meaningful as it sounds. "My father was determined to name me after a disciple. He never did tell me why he decided on Matthew, I suppose I can just be grateful I'm not Mark or Bartholomew."
callada: (just the usual heroics)

[personal profile] callada 2020-08-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
[He's glad he's been able to talk to her, then, that's for sure. Not that he has an especially high opinion of himself, but he does know that he has a lot of experience with this place and he always makes it a goal to pass on as much as he can to the new folks and everyone else, too. It just improves their chances of getting ahead if everyone has all the necessary info.]

Yeah, of course. If you can't find her around, just message her. She's between here and the station a lot and they don't have a network connection down there, but she'll see it whenever she comes back up. And she's all in favor of helping us, so long as we help her too.

"What does a wordweaver do?" they have to ask, curious. "Something with words. Of course. But there's lot of things to do with words." Some of the things one can do with words Soldat is good at; some of them they're really, really not.

[Soldat is pretty sure that there are more World Eaters than even the group of them can handle, but they're also happy to leave the planning to other people, here, and just be support. It worked out nicely during this last fight, anyway.]

I'm good. Caught up on my sleep, had Weaver do some actual maintenance on the arm, made Misty a cake for her birthday. Gave my first few spirit language lessons.

[That's the only one that comes out a little uncertain. That still makes them nervous, but it doesn't seem to be going badly.]

You've just arrived and you're already making plans?

( it's a good natured inquiry, no sign of offense or mocking, though he can't help but be a little surprised by it. most took a few weeks, even months, to collect themselves after arriving in Beacon. to be a fresh arrival and already making plans for the town, it's a change of pace to be certain.

as far as Cao Pi's comfort in a private conversation, he nods.
) I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Feel free to let him know I sent you his way. ( it's probably true that Cao Pi might be busy, with everything going on, but all of them were. someone willing and wondering about how best to help would likely be a welcome distraction. )

( well that's an interesting answer. Matt's brow furrows, and while he debates on not pressing, he figures if the guy didn't expect inquiry he probably wouldn't have brought it up all on his own. )

Why do you think that's safest? We're arguably safer together. With the spirits around, a lone wolf might easily become a target.

( which is not to automatically assume Danse is wrong, and that he can't take care of himself... though, frankly, Matt has experienced more than enough here to know that it doesn't always seem to matter how capable people are. when Green Eyes or worse set their sights, it was impossible to shake them. )

I'm sure you make a fine teacher. You always have been in combat training.

( Granted, it's not exactly the same thing. But there's a certain amount of patience required to teach both, and Soldat seems to have plenty of it. He's got a much softer touch than Javert does, and is not quite so stern. )

How has it been?

[ elektra listens without interrupting, glad that lorem's relied on the tablet and past announcements and recollections of the big events, as she can really only speak for herself. ]

It's more than what most people usually find out for themselves when they first arrive. [ she sounds mildly impressed, which is actually more than she'll usually give people when she first regards them. and, to be fair, if people have just arrived here it's because they've just died. ] You mentioned having read about the kidnapping, those were the green-eyeds. A group of us just returned from Helix Station, which is under the lake, and there were a number of them there, too. There's going to be a meeting covering the details of that. [ there were a lot of them. ]

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but there have been people attempting to take on the tasks that were once performed by those who ended up being lost to the flood - food and item retrieval and lantern restoration. [ and people retrieval. ] The results have been mixed, which is why we're retrieving supplies from the woods.

"I am very proud. Usha and I have raised strong, wise daughters." Or, well, one strong, wise daughter and two that are in progress of being strong, wise daughters, given that they're still children.

But a name carrying a meaning like that is impressive, even if she's not really clear on what he means by "disciple." The word itself is clear enough, but please, the naked purple woman knows nothing of Christianity. "That is a weighty but powerful name to carry," Merwen says. "The Matt you are named for, what was he a disciple of? Something important, I must assume."
